Who knew the brits could rhyme. Check out a band called the streets. http://www.the-streets.co.uk/ My favorite is "dont mug yourself". The single is "lets push things forward" Unlike the american form of hiphop which is full of thug gangster benzez and krystyle. Which is all fake and gross and trite. This group sounds unique. And super british. (They arent trying to sound like JayZ) His accent is so heavy. But the sound is very unique. And his writing is great and very socially conscious. And the lead guy mike is very funny. A cross between garage (not the kind you think), hiphop, and techno. Someone british please respond: What is garage music? When I, as an american look at the word "garage", i think nirvana sort of yelling rock music. I have a feeling that the british garage movement wasnt this. From the little bit i read, it seems to be some type of club music. I think the US missed this. So what in bloody hell are you all talking about? Garage, huh? A development and symbiosis of dub, hip hop and jungle, includes 2step and sorts of house music (but mainly 2step), aka "UK-Garage"... it's been quite hip in GB the last few years. Some artists had some huge hits with that sound (The Artful Dodger, Craig David(!!), Oxide&Neutrino;, SO Solid Crew). The Streets (actually it is just ONE man) has been one of the new sensations in the UK earlier this year. A guy from BBC One nearly lost his job when he played The Street's "Has it come to this" between Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Kosheen (both of them:totally hip; The Streets: Totally unknown) on his hit radio show. His boss asked him (with the mic wide open...) what kind of terrible sh*t that was and the DJ answered "I think a brilliant one"... . Officially The Street's style is described as a fusion of UK-Garage and Hip Hop. ![]() IP: Logged |

What is 2step? The Artful Dodger was mentioned a few times in some of the articles I read. So what happened at the bbc? A dj played the song. The boss busted in and said what is this shit and the dj said its brilliant music. That sounds like something that would happen here. with the playlist that no one strays from and the same 5 songs are played over and over again. I though the bbc was better than that. Oh so its one guy! There were two guys in the video on mtv2. My mistake. But he just seems to be the kind that just writes the lyrics. He does the beats too? Well I'm American, but I live in London. I've come to understand that garage music basically means techno/hip hop/house music, not like in America. Maybe you just have to say it the way English people do. Say "garage" the way you'd say "carriage" and then you've got the UK version. Anyway. No me gusta. I'm not a fan of The Streets either, from what I've heard so far. MTV2 plays the video for "Don't Mug Yourself" a little too often. But that's just me. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I've heard good things about The Streets. Claimin' he's the Em of the UK and such. Hmmm. Good asumption? I haven't heard any of his tunes myself... no MTV 2 for moi. Maria IP: Logged |

2step is the succesful pop version of drum'n'bass... soft dub music combined with raggamuffin' and a singer or sometimes only a singer. As in dub and drum'n'bass there are only two different hits - one sound of the bass drum, one sound of another drum or persussion, playing quite monotonously in the background. Not my cup of tea, I'm a true junglist and I can't stand that darn pop versions of the original ragga/black/jazz/soul jungle and d'n'b sounds. The Streets is a bit back to the roots and I wrote a little article (only a few sentences) about him earlier the year, but he's not one of my heroes, too... ![]() IP: Logged |
