Have I ever mentioned I really do not like Christmas, here are some reasons why...

1. Christmas Carols (Why do we need them are there like Easter Carols?)
2. Gap Ads (man, those things are shit all year, but they somehow get worse at Christmas)
3. Crowds (Why are people so GD rude?)
4. No Cash (okay when do I ever have money?)
5. Working Retail (I was serving this old woman yesterday and when we did not have the exact top she wanted, which given her description was probably designed in 1940, she actually said to me 'yeah thanks for nothing'.
6. Spending 'quality' time with people who I see once a year yet am expected to give presents to.
7. The whole Jesus factor, give me a break for most people it has nothing to do with that bogus kid in a manger thing; and if that is you claim how about you don't get gifts this year. I will admit Christmas for me is about presents, I am a gready wench, I know.
8. The PC factor, "holiday parties" "Winter Seasonal Trees" Give me a break, do I care what you call you holidays, why dictate what I can call mine? And if you have an issue with Christmas go to work on the 25th.

I am sure I can come up with more...

Well, that's what pop-western culture has mandated us to do, I guess. It is unfortunate that CHRISTmas has become nothing more than some form of deprecation & heathendom. (Not being self-righteous here...just my 2 cents.)

I very much agree with you about the other topics you've brought up. And those Gap-ads are very annoying and disturbing. How about that Joe Boxers ad with all those "too-jolly" jumping baffoons...Oh, how they vex me!!! And...how I remember working retail during this time! I totally sympathize with you. Just grin and bear it, it'll be over soon.

If anything, it's those demented Old Navy commercials that kill me. How incredibly stupid but I suppose its what get those kiddies into the stores for this holiday shitson. Whatever. If anything, I wish those were more like the Gap commericals. I always kinda dig those. I think they're done well, from an artistic standpoint. I really like the musician ones. Remember back in the day Rufus Wainwright did a christmasy one and people thought it was Duncan? Yeaaah. I remember hearing that. Too bad it wasn't good 'ol, D.

I remember really likin' last years Christmasy Gap ads...hmm, what was the cute song that they used? My brain is fried. Too much work for finals. I have this killer radio project due in two days and I can't even do my original topic. It's incredibly frustrating but it's all gonna be over soon, I suppose.

I feel your pain though, Jen. Retail must be insane at a time like this. Jeez. I had a lady say,'yeah, thanks for nothing' to me, too. although, I don't remember the context...I swear. I'm as well be elderly. I have a terrible memory. Pity me, it's okay.

Jenn,
To get you through your Xmas blues I suggest the following therapy:

1. Sleep in really late.

2. Rent a day worth of the most un-christmas movies you can find (don't forget the popcorn).

3. When your family come to visit for the holidays, throw snow balls just as they get out of the car. If you don't have snow, ice cubes will work just fine..lol j/k

4. give all your family and friends prank Xmas gifts, like a box of confetti..

or...

5. You can always kick the New Year's Eve Party off early!!

ahhhh yes....working retail.....no one, and I mean no one should have to go through that now. I know what it's like. I worked at macy's when i was younger (18-19)....it's a pain in the arse, especially when the store was opened till midnight and I had to work that late a few times.....who lot of fun....

here's my perscription for anyone who works retail....and please follow it...

Watch Kevin Smith's CLERKS......it's nice to realize that you aren't the only one who knows how bad work can be when you have stupid, lazy, unbearable customers to deal with. It's funny, trust me. And don't trip over the black and white thing....it's still a cool movie....

and yes, I want to he-man bitch slap that guy jumping around in the boxers all the time lookin' like a complete retard....he needs to get off TV along with that guy in the Dell computer commercial (i think his name is jarod)....and yes, GAP needs to just roll over and die soon....they have been stuggling and will continue to struggle...mind you sometimes they do have reasonably priced clothes, the adds suck! Another one is those new McDonald commercial, especially with the Williams sister....they look too manly for me, and to be honest they quite scare me....

but yeah, CHRISTmas used to be based on this whole religious appreciation and it got turned into something completely different (no thanks to hallmark) and just makes everyone more in debt....personally I like the gift side of it, however usually around this time of year I do use the holiday as a catharsis as to how I view the actions in my life for that particular year (whether good, bad, favorable, or unfavorable).....and i guess just run from there with how i plan to tackle next year.....but sometimes it's good to be alone for a little bit....i mean, why spend time with people you hardly talk to during that whole year and then be expected to show appreciation for that by getting them a gift.....chalk it up to moral obligations I guess...but yeah jenn, i know how you feel....i can be mr. bah humbug myself sometimes too...ok, enough of me cause i'm getting long winded...

anyways, watch CLERKS and enjoy a whole lot of laughs....and remember....THIRTY-SEVEN!!!

lmao

Christmas, great...Hopefully I will be working on Christmas/Christmas Eve, so I don't have to spend time with my family. Spending time with family vs. kicking myself in the stomach with a steel-toe boot...I'd rather kick myself. Actually I have requested to work those two days just so I don't have to see my family as much as I am going to have to. This may be the only time I actually DO wanna work. But really, working at Walgreens isn't too bad. It's really easy and a bunch of fun people work there. Oh, and here's the big reason I like working there; they actually play GOOD MUSIC! My very first day there they played She Runs Away. At first I didn't realize it but I'm singin along with the song then I'm like OMG! And yea, good stuff.

I just got chewed out by my friend for saying x-mas instead of Christmas, she's a Christian and is somewhat very religious. She was like "CHRIST CHRIST CHRIST! It's CHRISTmas! Not X-mas! You're Xing out CHRIST!" I was like "Umm...no I'm not. I'm just too lazy to type out CHRIST. X is much easier..." Wow, didn't know it would cause so much controversy.

Well to end this on a good note, I DO like Christmas time. A bunch of good sales, aka Kohls had everything 50% off yesterday. I love drivin around lookin at Christmas lights too, they're so pretty. And snow. Ya gotta love snow (as long as you don't have to go anywhere). I wish it would snow all year long. Yeay for snow.

hahahaha there's this guy I went to high school with....he used to work at walgreens to.....say, remember Tupac Shakur and his West-side side when he formed a "w" with his fingers by crossing his second to last finger with his middle finger to make a W....well this guy used to flip the "W" all the time and yell "Walllllllllllllllllgreens!" hahahahahahaa fucking hilarious as hell.....i used to mess around with him and form an L for Longs with my thumb and hand......i swear this guy was beyond stupid but it was funny....

I love Xmas - no apology for the X. I'm a heathen. Sue me.

I love the snow, the shopping, the cookies & cocoa, the tree, the lights, the presents!!!! I love the extravagant overeating! I love ripping wrapping paper! I love my family all together, and my husband's family, too.

However, I can do without the crowds at the mall, and the subsequent rudeness that ensues from too many people in too small a place.

Jenn - I grew up mostly without religion (Dad's an atheist, Mom's too lazy for church, Stepmother was excommunicated, Stepfather - ?????). I attended a Quaker school, so I lean that way when it comes to religion. However, the main figures in my own religious pantheon are Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Great Pumpkin. Occasionally the Tooth Fairy wafts down, as well. So, it's basically all about the presents for me, too

You know what I learnt today? Apparently the new trend is to push someone and then say "Excuse me"...

Bronwen, I know you have not been around as long as some of us, but to clarify I am an atheist.

I am doing something really cool for Christmas gifts, but I can not explain as someone who sometimes read this board will be getting one.

I'm going to really want to post after I've worked a few days over break. As some of you know, I worked this summer at a Christmas themed amusement park for kids and their kid-like parents. They play christmas songs all day long. I was so sick of the songs about a month in, I don't know how I forgot and decided to sign up for the last five days of the season. I'm going to be so sick of Christmas, it isn't going to be funny. And I'm going to be really sick of whiney children and their cranky parents, I have a feeling. Hopefully, they will be in somewhat of a nice mood....haha, yeah, whatever.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Yes, Christmas kind of sucks... I'm atheist so it is annoying because the crap about Jesus just gets worse... And the heat! My gosh! Here in Brazil, christmas is melting-hot!!! I can hardly wait for winter again. I hate summer, that's why I automatically hate x-mas... I always get depressed on summer... then there's the beach and all those semi-naked people having mental-sex (when they're not having real sex... not that i see it...) And there's the family issue... Here in Brazil we get the presents by midnight on December 24th so it's nice because there's a lot of cousins in the same house, all awake till late night... but anyways, it sucks... the presents are the only thing good... today I had to spend the whole afternoon writing addresses on envelopes for my grandmother because she says she has a bad handwriting. Also had to write on christmas cards and to translate a letter to english to some of her polish friends... I had to write on christmas cards she bought by 1,99... it's a box with 12 cards, 12 envelopes and 1 pen!!! excruciating... that's why I don't like X-mas...

Wow, a hot christmas. That must be intersting. I'm really, really begining to hate the winter. Especially Boston winters where you don't have a car and have to *walk* everywhere. It's just brutal sometimes, I swear.

Aww! Christmas cards. How I want to get a christmas card.

I get sorta depressed around Christmas (or it could be post-finals blues) but it has nothing to do with the season itself or anything like that.

I consider myself somewhat spiritual (I'm a Protestant) and I've always felt that God would feel ashamed about what Christmas has become. It was never about sales, or putting up a tree and decoriating it, or focusing on the commericalism of it. Christmas has to do with something greater than any of us can imagine or could possibly think of. Christmas is more important than me or anyone else. For the most part, Christmas is more internal and personal than external and superficial. Christmas is more on the spirit of love and peace.

That was very nicely put Andrew Poe. I too believe that Christmas is about peace, spirit and love. I am very spiritual and consider myself to be a believer it's just that sometimes the whole being alone thing gets me down and I tend to focus on the wrong things. I'm usually an upbeat and happy person, so I hope that my earlier post can be ignored.

Christmas has become far too commercial, but what isn't these days? Sports, music, movies, everything is overly commercialized. I am not religious and my immediate family is also non-religious. Christmas for us was always about my family being together and having a great time, getting/making gifts for each other and eating a hell of a lot of food and having fun. We are all grown up now and this year I will be working, holed up in a lab for the second year in a row. But I know that most of the rest of my family will be home and having fun and that makes me feel better about it. Two of my sisters won't be able to make it either since they are working...I guess that's what happens when you grow up. But next year I will be home for Christmas even if I have to quit my job. Just because it is so much fun. I guess in our way we have avoided the commercialism a bit...we do buy stuff for each other and put up decorations and whatnot....but it has always been about us and our family. Not the religious aspect, or not getting as many presents as possible. We respect the religious aspect of it but don't practice it. Actually, my family is too big to buy presents for everyone. I don't know how my parents did it and still do it. They buy presents for 9 kids and every year (plus some relatives), get us great stuff and feed us until we all have to pretty much roll ourselves out of the kitchen. And we're not rich or anything, but they always got us good stuff. We kids draw names...I can barely afford to buy presents for 3 of them, let alone 9. So this year its a bit different....everyone is a bit disappointed that the whole gang will not be together but we are all (more or less) adults now. That's also part of the problem...we are all very close in age (18 to 30) and have an enormous sense of humour. Growing up in a family of 11 with one bathroom...you need a sense of humour. Basically, we have a fantastic time whenever we get together...lots of laughing, eating, more laughing, more eating. Sorry, I don't know where this is going but Christmas for me and my family is the family thing. Some people celebrate the religious aspect, some go the commercial route and its all about presents. And some people, as has been posted here, don't even celebrate, and that's cool too. I love Christmas. But if it wasn't for my family and some friends that I share it with, it would likely just be another day. So even if the holiday blues have got you, or those Gap commercials or the crowds of rude unruly people are pissing you off, throw some Duncan on the CD player and remember it will be over soon. And for some of us...all too quickly.

PS - Anyone seeing DMB in Albany on Tuesday? That's my little Christmas present to myself. Well, I would be going anyway

Wowie, G! I wish I had a big immediate family like that. I have loads of first cousins but still... must be nice.

But, you're totally right--what hasn't in this world become over commercialized? It's sad to admit but true. Everything has and why should Christmas be the exception--especially when all that commerce is involved. Blaaaah. I can't even afford to buy any gifts this year and it's so frustrating. It almost doesn't even feel like Christmas to me. Sad, huh?

Sorry all your family could't be together.

Ok I have to say this and I didn't read the whole post so if I'm repeating what someone already just ignore me.

Any way, the whole reason we celebrate this holiday is about Jesus and then of course the way that has come to be now with CHRISTMAS trees and all the other BS. So why are we now supposed to call it something else so we don't offend any one! Please! Every religion should be able to celebrate in their way without having to worry about offending everyone else. If you don't want your kids to celebrate christmas at school, fine write a letter to get other religions to be celebrated as well. This is America people, a big melting pot of religions and beliefs and yada yada yada. Yes, this country (America) started out with the "puritans" and christianity after they shoved the Native Americans out of the way. So a very large group of people would say that since "we" fought for our freedom to live here, it should be primarily christian. Fine. But here's the other thing, you can't expect to have an amendment or anything else that says people of other beliefs and religions can live here and practice freely at the same time try to get them to convert. And maybe that's what the whole politically correct thing is. Maybe that's what they're trying to do, make it fair for everyone. But if you're going to do it that way you may as well not have a "decorated tree" in the office or class room at all.My point is, however, a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree and Hannakuh candles are Hannakuh candles.

Wow, didn't know I could get so passionate about the subject.

Sure christimas is commercialized, but we don't have to limitate it to that. Many people said that Christmas doesn't have to be about religion or specific religion, but about something good and pure, or greater than us. I say that a date is a date, has nothing to do with feelings. Years, months, days, holidays were all invented and chosen randomly. So if you want to do something special with you family, friends and people you care about, why does it have to be during the space of time people call "Christmas"? Do it everyday if that's what you really want and believe, don't stick to old stupid conventions.

Another thing: did you know that Christmas is the time of the year when suicide rates are the highest everywhere in the world? Especially in the developed world, topped by Finland, of course... something to think about...

<<Rodolfo>>

PS. I don't mean to be annoying, but I feel the need to point out that "America" isn't a country...

I do agree and think that the same attitude people have during christmas is the same that they need to have during every part of the year. But, what kind of Crack are you on, RUDOLPHO! Ok, so yeah, America started out as colonies but we Are a Country now. A new found country with a 200 year resume on our hands. And while some people might not be proud of it, I am. Why do we have to get all technical and shit any way. I am just stating the facts and presenting my point of view. So lets not get ugly and go aroung saying that America isn't a country. Thank You!

ok, yes I do agree that christmas shouldn't be the only time to spend with the people that are close to you, and yes I am well aware of the fact that this time of the year has the highest suicide rate, however the whole america is not a country, if that's what you think then I'm just gonna say this in true Tiddy fashion....

Ok, technically, my country is called the United States of America. I get it.

However, given the current climate, this is not the time to poke any kind of fun at the ultra-patriotic Americans!

I'm going to another post now. That dude Rudolph the Red nosed Reighndeer put in a bad mood. And Christmas isn't that bad damnit! We should be happy and love each other and try to find the good in things, now that we have all vented. I think deep down we all like Christmas time even if only for a split second. I do agree with Jenn on the working in retail thing, it was hell! That's why I don't do it anymore.

Hey, you guys,

Like I said, I didn't mean to be annoying, I wrote it really discreetly, actually. I could have said more. I understand you are very ultra-patriotic and I like to make fun of it. But that was not the case. I was giving my opinion that this kind of mistake shouldn't be repeated. I mean, I am American as well as you are. America is a continent, a hell of a big continent. I just don't like the confusion. But I don't think you actually have a word in your language to say your nationality, do you? I'm not sure. But the closest you can say is North-American, which is also incorrect because North America includes Mexica, Canada and Greenland, besides USA. And you must agree with me that United States of America is no name for a country... I mean, any country of America is composed by a buch of States United in America... Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Argentina could be called United States of America.

I have nothing against Americans. I know a bunch of them and I think they are really nice. But I can't say the same about the government... oh boy... no comments...

<<Rodolfo>>
see how's it spelled?
R-O-D-O-L-F-O

PS. Mexico has a word for your nationality as well as Brazil. In Portuguese USA is EUA (Estados Unidos da Amrica). So you guys are "estadosunidenses"... It is indeed a terrible word. I didn' even know how to spell it.

I am NOT an American, I am a Canadian, yes I am from North America, but the country I am from is Canada. To say I am American is like saying Chinese and Japanese is the same thing.

Okay, I understand and agree with you. You're Canadian, I knew that already. I meant that to people like Melissa, who started the discussion about USA.

So, how was everyone's Christmas? Did it really suck? Didn't you guys think of any other ugly names to call me for my disrespect for your beloved country?

I spent mine spewing. I think I got that Disney Cruise virus that's been going around on land. All better now though. Enjoy your dinner!

I was spewing, too. So sick. So gross.

I spent Christmas day with the dog watching back to back SNL marathons. But, I did get some nice gifts so all wasn't lost.
