I do...no offense to wt...this must be a young person's term, since I have seen it mainly used by teen age girls (again, wt, no offense intended)...was it perpretrated on us first by some young pop star? What is the deal????

I am a teenage girl. I can't remember a time when I have used the word "hella" except to be a smartass. I'm not much of an expert on popstars so I'm at a loss for answers.

I admit I have used hellava (hell of a), but never hella, and I have not a clue to what it means; but I am too old to up on the lingo. One of my mom's students told me today that I am 'out of it' and 'not cool', I wanted to remind her I am more than twice her age. And two girls I work for you should hear this awful music they listen to, I can not even comprehend what happen to the days when music had a message, a point outside of getting laid, and even if it was about getting laid they prettied it up a little. We were doing stock the other morning and I listened to 4 hours of this music and I swear every song (except the Eminem ones) sounded the exact same and seemed to be about the same subjects. Bitches, Hoes, Money, Drugs and Sex...

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

ok...hella is just another term for saying "really" in reference as an adjective, or "a whole lot," or "totally" (there, I'm sure you older folks can remember using that one back in the day)...

I don't use it much other than just making joke comments when impersonating Eric Cartman from southpark (he uses hella a whole lot and pisses his friends off who also get tired of him using hella.....it's just hilarious how he says it....his voice speaks for itself...)

so there's the history on that..

I have to say, I've never heard this expression before and have only seen it written on this MB. Now, I know I am one of those "older folks," but I do have teenage kids, and I have never heard them say it either. Maybe if I actually heard it in a conversation, it would make more sense, but for now, it just seems kind of dumb!

ahhh, thanks, wt, for clearing that up....I always thought it was some lazy way of saying 'helluva,' which is not the most strenuous word to type or say...

I feel so enlightened!

Hella hasn't come to my neck of the woods yet. I've heard the No Doubt song. It sounds goofy now, but I'm sure it'll be part of the popular lexicon in a few years.

My friends and I never use "hella".

We say plenty of other weird things like "mad wicked" and "sketchy" but hella is lame.

Give over, I do not think it really has anything to do with age, W-T you are about my age and I have no clue about some of the words you use. As for it being the older folks using "totally" I must confess I use it often and am highly teased for the fact everything is "like" or "soooo" oh yeah and my ya'lls

AH ha!!! there we go serenasheik!!! Thank god someone from around me understands it! Maybe it's just the geographical location and how there's a terminological difference in our geographical differences....hell I don't know! Maybe, but yes Jenn....i know I say stuff most of you guys don't understand because it's funny as hell to confuse you guys with this stupid ghetto verbage i pick up at my work...hehehehehehehehehe...and you guys probably stare at my threads like "what the f$*k is this kid talking about!" Believe, I can be quite articulate if need be, but this is too much fun. Hell, if you met me in person then you'd understand I can speak some diction when I'm in the mood.....but yes, words like poopalati (hehehe), pootie, etc....that's me just messin' around with you guys and just letting you get a feel of how funny some people's verbiage can be......just take it for what it's worth and if you laugh, then you laugh....

ps...I've been using hella way before that no doubt song, so don't even go there and say that pop hoe has had an effect on me....if that was the case then I would be flashing my ass around in a small bikini and saying "i'm gonna get dirty"....and I know you all would find that very attractive....especially you jenn (hehehehe)....just kidding...anyways, pop has never had an influence (at least not the boy/girl band she@ that's out there), as for duncan that's a different story, but you catch my drift...

How about holla?! I love that one. I try to answer my phone that way all the time without laughing but I can't seem to pull it off.

I was watching this thingy on CNN with Serena Altchul about drug deals and this goofy white dude answered his phone like that. Toooo amausing! Too bad he was trying to be a bona-fide thug. Either way, I was laughing my ass off.

But try it, yo--it's fun!

Hella!

How do you pronounce HELLA? Is it just like HELL then A? Stupid, I think. But you guys don't have too many slangs, though. I find that amusing. Most of you all use proper language (at least here). I use it because everyone use it. You should see how many slangs Portuguese has. And the made up ones are the greatest ever, I agree. That's why i support it, despite myself.

yep. Hell-uh. Hella. The US is such a big place. The south has its own accent as well as its own slang, as does the west coast (which hella seems to be a west coast thing because ive never heard that until i heard the no doubt song "Hella Good"), as does NYC and so on. There are a few universal slang terms. I think the most recent one that is no longer cool to say is "crib" for house or apartment.
We also have "mad" as in "yo he's got mad skills" (he is very talented) which i still hear some times but that is kinda old too. That might be east coast too. it can mean "really" or "a lot". kinda like hella.

"wasted" is a good term for drunk (or high). My favortie is "Hammered" which i think is a nyc or east coast thing. I hadnt heard the term until i moved to NJ.

"throw down" means to party or to dance. Might be east coast thing.

I am looking on an american slang website and they say that "spuds" is slang. I think everyone knows that one. Is that still slang? (It means potatoes for my international friends)

"screw up" - mess up

"get bent" - can mean two different thing. The dictionary says "to get angry" like "Dont get bent (or get bent out of shape) over your lost wallet" but if you say "Get Bent!" it means fuck off.

"cheesy" - cheap, tacky

"airhead" - someone who is stupid. Also the name of a taffy candy.

"sup" - short for what's up. As in how are things going? (greeting)

Most of our current slang comes from rap videos i think. Ebonics (black slang) is the most intensive slang in my opinion. Music and movies in general color our language. Those usually are the ones that become universal. everything else is dependent on region. in my opinion

We dont use a lot of slang her bc no one would know what we were talking about. And we want to include everyone :-) that or when i type i have to think a little longer about what i am going to say because i am typing, have a tendency to use the correct words.

Can anyone else think of words that only an American would know the context?
