Well, glad you asked and glad you stopped by! Well, on shuffle mode in my extravagent 5 cd changer (high in my penthouse, of course), I have David Sylvians Everything and Nothing (2 cds), Big Star's #1 record/big city and Third/Sister Lovers, with Leonard Cohen's 10 New Songs rounding out the group.

Now, let me get back to my Count Chocula.

Well, not that anyone asked, but...

Daylight
Phantom Moon
Gravity -- Our Lady Peace
Beautiful Garbage -- Garbage
Clumsy -- Our Lady Peace

Not really varied, is it? I'm kind of in a rut, I think...but, a good rut.

Funny how many people have Daylight in their players...what is this, some kinda duncan sheik forum or something? geez!

Seeing I don't have a 5-CD changer, I can't listen to songs at random. BUT, if I did, they would be (depending on the mood I'm in):

Just walking around the house:

Crowded House - Recurring Dream
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Phil Keaggy - Beyond Nature
Duncan Sheik - Phantom Moon
Al Di Meola - World Sinfonia

For reading/studying (no singing):

Phil Keaggy - Beyond Nature
Phil Keaggy - Acoustic Sketches
Phil Keaggy - Lights of Madrid
Pierre Bensusan - Nice Feeling
James Horner - Field of Dreams soundtrack
Yo-Yo Ma - Appalachian Waltz (a close 6th)

To get pumped up before playing basketball, volleyball, etc.:

Tool - Lateralus (love the way the songs "build" to a climax)
Foo Fighters - Color and the Shape
Incubus - Morning View
Talisien Orchestra - Forbidden Forest: Impressions of George Winston
Duncan - Only the song "Mouth on Fire" (for some reason that song gets me a goin'!)

Don't want to waste more space, but I have a big palate when it comes to music and what I like and yet I'm picky on the other hand too. I could listen to hard rock and then some fiddling by Mark O'Connor and get the same feeling. I can't get into Creed at all but I like Jeff Buckley. Like Nirvana but don't like Soundgarden. I can't figure her out. Like 311 but not Rage Against the Machine. Like Doobie Brothers but not...

Ooh Ken, which Jimmy Eat World album are you listening to? I do belive you should be listening to "Clarity" though it's more likely that you're listening to "Bleed American" (but I think it was just changed to a self titled album after last year's terrorism mess).

I am currently listening to the Red House Painters and I think everyone else should too.

I only have a three disk (my 5 disk is sitting on the floor, it does not sound that great).

Anyway I must confess, I have not so much been listening to a whole cd as much as one song over and over and over (I am not asking if anyone else does that because I know a certain someone does)... The song is "The Hamster Dance" hahaha, I joke (as I kill everyone)...

No seriously the song on repeat is "Under the Milkyway" The Church.

Other than that in my CD player you will find a rotation of:

Eminem "The Eminem Show"
Angie Aparo "The American"
John Mayer "Room for Squares" (seeing him tonight)
The Mamas and the Popas - a collection of hits
Tragically Hip - (whatever the f the yellow one is called, ahhh the name escapes me)

ericka, yeah, it is the self titled one (which I never knew was Bleed American, I figured it was just one I couldn't find..I did get Clarity, but just couldn't get into it as much..just didn't have as much punch to it).

and yeah, love Red House Painters too! I have them all on tape, and I think I like the first two the best still, tho Down colorful Hill is great too...the recent stuff hasn't turned me on as much.

Ahhh! "Clarity" is one of my favorite albums of all time. Their first major label album, "Static Prevails" is also damn good but more punk rock. They are much more polished now.

"Sha Sha" by Ben Kweller is in rotation 24/7. Everyone should own it. Now.

I am feeling very positive today, folks. You know why? Why, Yes, of course! As in, that is what I am listening to...5 glorious hours (more or less) of prog rock at it's most splendiferous. The exact discs, you query? Wellll, I have Close to the Edge, Yessongs (2 super duper discs), Tales of Topographic Oceans (two much maligned, but still loved my moi discs), and The Yes Album, a very old one (I guess they all are).

Boy, that Steve Howe can sure play guitar. Now, back to my grilled cheese sandwich, homeslices!

Dove - Last Broadcast
Duncan Sheik - Duncan Sheik
Pete Yorn - Music for the Morning After
Fu Fighters - (the new one)

Tina I love the Cult. I think it is the best music to dance to. Of course now I only dance around the house, but I have great memories of going out in my younger days and just letting loose when they played the Cult.

Yeah, I know what you mean about dancing in the privacy of your own home.
We saw The Cult way back in '87 (I think) in Dallas. They even did a Cd signing at one of the record stores, (can't remember which one) and of course we went. I have pictures...I'll have to dig them out sometime and scan them for you. I looked like an 80's girl in them though.

Well Ken, you do like Dr. Pepper an awful lot. I won't say you're an addict or anything, but I will say that getting you off Dr. Pepper would be like trying to get a nympho off of sex. There's a pun in there somewhere I believe!

As for what I've been listening to lately:

1) Dennis Wilson - "Pacific Ocean Blue"
This is a sadly obscure album that shows that Brian Wilson was not the only musician with immeasurable talent as a songwriter. For anyone interested, there is a nice article in the November 2002 issue of MOJO Magazine. With regards to contemporary rock periodicals, MOJO seems to have taken the lead in shedding light on Dennis Wilson the musician, as opposed to the drug addicted drunk who loved to womanize. There are also two good books out there on Dennis Wilson. One is by Jon Stebbins, titled "The Real Beach Boy," and the other is by Adam Webb, entitled "Dumb Angel: The Life and Music of Dennis Wilson."

2) Dennis Wilson - "Celebrate the News: Dennis Wilson and the Beach Boys"
This is a 22-song collection that I made for a very special friend of mine, and I liked it so much that I made a copy for myself. Overall, its a compilation of songs that Dennis Wilson wrote and had performed by or with the Beach Boys. This compilation even includes a song allegedly written by Charles Manson, titled "Never Learn Not to Love."

Okay, I have to stop talking about Dennis Wilson's music, or someone is going to pin me as either his relative, PR man, or both.

3) George Harrison - "Brainwashed"
When the positive reviews started to come out regarding George Harrison's last recorded album, I wondered to myself if the positive reviews were a product of the low expectations people had of the album. After all, posthumous albums are usually released by the record companies and the estates as a way to cash in on someone's legacy. I have to admit that I was a little unsure of the album myself, and ultimately, I bought the CD out of curiosity. However, I will also admit that I think "Brainwashed" is a very good CD, and I could easily rate it as George's second best solo album (next to "All Things Must Pass). There are parts where George gets preachy (i.e.: The "God, God, God" chorus in "Brainwashed"), but for the most part, the album is free of any preachy lectures or anti-materialistic rants. There are some very upbeat numbers as well as some songs that illustrate George's gentle nature. Overall, "Brainwashed" is a very fitting farewell.

4) The Flaming Lips - "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"
It took me a couple of listens, but the more I listen to "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," the more I like it. The elements that compose each song is a bit different from what is usually associated with a Flaming Lips record, but I personally don't think this is a bad thing. The music is much more synth driven, and the manic drumming has been replaced with trip-hop beats. I love the melodies, and the lyrics are pretty thought provoking--fusing tales of struggle, death, and emotional robots. Its easily one of the best CDs of 2002, and it definitely solidifies the Flaming Lips position as one of the best bands in American rock music.

5) Taxiride - "Imaginate"
I remember hearing them sing the song "Get Set" in the Reese Witherspoon movie "Election," and saying, "My, that's pretty different. Its not everyday in the world of modern music that you hear a group, who is not a boy band, harmonize. Moreover, its not everyday where one can hear breezy sitar lines add to the uptempo nature of a song. Groundbreaking? Hardly. Considering the fact that this album is three years old, its really an oddity that I finally got the CD not too long ago. With that, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with Taxiride's effort. Their instrumentation is outstanding, and their harmonies boarder between Crosby, Stills, & Nash and the Beach Boys. However, the lyrical content of the music is autrocious. I feel like I'm swimming in a sea of schmaltz, or I'm listening to lyrics written either by Donny Osmond or Air Supply. Ack. They had two-thirds of a good album going on, but they ruined it with their lyrics. Now, they have a new CD out called "Garage Mahal," but I don't plan on buying it unless someone can tell me that their lyrics have improved considerably over the past three years.

Richard

P.S. I've been listening to Christmas music of many various artists, old and new. I know, I know, it's not even Thanksgiving yet! I love Christmas songs, though, and the time for playing them is really pretty short, when you think about it.

I freaking LOVE the new Flaming Lips. "Fight Test" is often found on repeat in my room... So is "Waiting for a Superman" off of "Soft Bulletin." I taught myself to play it a few days ago. Recording followed.

well, I've had to change up my cds lately because I left several of them at home when I went there a month ago now. I don' have a five cd changer at school, but I listen to cds all the time on my way to class and just sitting around in my room. I've gotten several new ones lately and ahve been returning to some oldies. Here's what I've heard most recently.

1. Coldplay "rush of blood to the head"
I think I still like the first the best, but there are some excellent songs on this mix. I love Whisper, Scientist and Warning Sign besides the single "In my place."

2. Jeff Buckley "mystery white boy"
This has really grown on me lately. I bought it this summer and listened to it a few times, but recently I have been in the Jeff mood and have listened to it extensively. It's the closest I'll ever come to seeing him in concert and I like it for that reason, really. I listened to it on the plane ride out to Mass. the other day. I just love his voice.

3. David Gray "New Day at Midnight"
First listen, I didn't really notice much. Second listen, picked out a few songs I liked. I don't know most of the names of the songs. I love the last song and first song. the last one is the single. I also like Kangaroo. David Gray has completed another good batch of moody, adult tech/rock. I'm impressed once again.

4. Wallflowers "Red Letter Days"
Not "Bringing Down the Horse" but better than "Breach" and the first one. I really adore this cd. And not just becuase I've been Wallflower deprived for a while. "Out of the Water", the second song, the single, three ways and Here in Pleasantville are my favorites, but I really love the thing as a whole.

5. John Mayer "No Room for Squares"
Jenn, I hope the concert was fantastic! I want to see him again badly. I want him to come out with another new cd first though! There are few cds that I can honestly say I love from beginning to end. I think John Mayer is one of the most intelligent songwriters around. And he's hot and has a great voice. His songs are interesting and I love every song on this cd.

6. Jimmy Eat World "Bleed American/Self titled"
I think it's odd they keep changing the name, but it's a darn good cd. I love "My Sundown", "Sweetness" and " A Praise chorus". It's a rockin' cd with some great lyrics. I've asked for previous releases for Christmas.

I know I'm no Richard, but that's my take.

ok, a weird, relatively quiet collection now..

Springsteen, Ghost of Tom Joad (his best in years, in my opinion)
Joni Mitchell, Court and spark
Janis Ian, Watercolors (0hhh, the sadness, can you feel it from there?)
Rickie Lee Jones, Pirates
Nilsson-All Time Greatest Hits

ahh, turkey sandwiches!!!!
