Hi, I'm new to the boards, but a long-time duncan fan. How did I ever hear of Nick Drake? Well, in "That Says It All," Duncan says, "Mr. Drake stayed up late, and made me cry," and that sparked my interest in the mysterious Nick Drake. I'd also read reviews of Duncan's music comparing him to Nick Drake. So, I went out on a limb and bought Drake's "Pink Moon"--and I love it. I now have all his albums, and was just curious to see if anyone else was inspired by Duncan to check out Nick Drake. I'm so glad that I was!!! Thanks, Duncan!!! IP: Logged |

Yes, Duncan turned me on to Nick Drake's music. I remember reading the back cover to the "At the Reservoir" CD, when the writer said that Duncan reminded him of the Blue Nile being conducted by Nick Drake (or something to that effect). Then, I remember hearing Duncan mention Nick in "That Says It All," so I went out and purchased "Bryter Layter," "Five Leaves Left," "Pink Moon," and "Time of No Reply." By the same token, Duncan also got me interested in the music of the Blue Nile. Richard IP: Logged |

Shane: That's a tough question, since Nick Drake's albums were all excellent in my opinion. If I owned one Nick Drake album, I would own "Pink Moon." "Pink Moon," in my opinion, is Nick Drake's finest achievement as a musician. It is absolutely astonishing. To me, there is an intensity that surrounds "Pink Moon" that doesn't surround "Five Leaves Left" or "Bryter Layter." Underneath the excellent guitar work and the beautiful tunes, the stark, personal nature of "Pink Moon" takes the listener into Nick's inner mind to hear of his helplessness, confusion, and depression. The fact that Nick created an album of the magnitude of "Pink Moon," given his situation at the time, is an accomplishment in itself. However, that's besides the point. "Pink Moon" sparks a tremendous emotional response from myself, more so than "Five Leaves Left" and "Bryter Layter." Of course, this opinion shouldn't be used to diminish the overall quality of "Five Leaves Left" or "Bryter Layter" because both albums have their own spectacular moments of sheer emotion. Yet, with "Pink Moon," the view is darker, and Nick's pain is much more evident. Consequently, I find myself even more captivated, unable to turn away from the bleak view presented. In short, "Pink Moon" is a masterpiece. Richard IP: Logged |

Shane: "Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake" is basically an overview of Nick's recording career, from "Five Leaves Left" to his final recording sessions in February 1974. As I see it, the CD is good for those people who are just learning about Nick's career and want to become more familiar with his music, to test the waters before diving in so to speak. The CD does contain "Pink Moon" and three other songs from the "Pink Moon" album: "Things Behind the Sun," "From the Morning," and "Which Will." Moreover, the CD also has "Black Eyed Dog" from Nick's February 1974 sessions. Some Nick Drake fans consider "Black Eyed Dog" to be one of his most depressing songs, judging by the tone of his lyrics and the sound of his voice. Its absolutely heart-wrenching. Of course, "Black Eyed Dog" can also be found on the "Time of No Reply" CD. Richard IP: Logged |

Hi, it's Michelle. I am the one who posted this question to the board originally. Richard! I totally agree with you that 'Pink Moon' is the best album, it was the first song i'd ever heard of Nick's, (being track 1 of the first cd i bought of his) and I was immediately captivated by it. Nick Drake is so amazing, it troubles me so much to think of all the wonderful music we are missing out on because of his untimely death. However, besides 'Pink Moon', I think my favorite album is '5 Leaves Left.' 'Time of No Reply' just sounds so distant to me. 'Pink Moon' has that quality as well, but it's so intimate at the same time. Sorry about the rambling, but I'm just excited to have a kindred spirit! Shane: definitely buy Pink Moon first (if you haven't already) because it is pure, unadulterated Nick Drake. It's very raw; yet so beautiful. It is just Nick's voice, acoustic guitar, and a little piano. It's my favorite. I would also recommend 5 Leaves Left or Bryter Layter as well, but I wouldn't get Time of No Reply until you've thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 albums. This one is a departure from the other albums--the most melancholy of all I think. I'm so glad you're interested in Nick Drake! :0) ------------------ IP: Logged |

I would second the person who said get Way To Blue, the sort of greatest hits album...it was my introduction, after hearing about him for years as a big influence on a lot of people. IP: Logged |
