Our very own Alex came up with the idea of having a list about weird band names. So, all the credit must go to him for this one. I was going to start this thread on Monday morning, but I'm getting a bit sleepy, so I thought I would start the list now.

Over the course of music history, bands came up with the weirdest names. Some of the names were so weird that it made several people take notice, asking "What the hell is that for a band name?!?!" So, sit back, have fun, and think up your personal list of bands that had weird names.

Everyone has until midnight (EST) Tuesday, July 9th to post their selections to the thread. For anyone who is new and starting out, feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Have fun!

Richard

Well, there is a band here in Brazil that is called Cogumelo Plutão, that means Mushroom Pluto. Could it be weirder? How about Pato Fu (Duck Fu), also a brazilian band? Their last album is called "Pink Noise", and there was "Dog's TV". Then there is Toad and the Wet Sprocket, Everything but the Girl, Hottie and the Blowfish, The Beatles (it's weird, we're just used to it)...

It's Hootie and the Blowfish and Toad the Wet Sproket. Barenaked Ladies is also a weird name.

I'm heading out of town in a couple of hours, but I thought I would do this first. Let me see...ooh, this is kind of tough.

Limp Bizkit
Blink 182
Weezer
Papa Roach
Alien Ant Farm

That's all I can think of right now.
I'm looking forward to reading everyone else's lists when I get back!

Wow, Tina, you suprised me! I wasn't expecting you to post until next week, but I like nice pleasant suprises.

Alex: It was your idea, so you get the credit for this. You are the man, my friend!

A special welcome to Rodolfo and Carly, as they are newcomers to the list!

well, I guess I should just list the ones that haven't been listed. I like everyone's so far. I was actually going to mention the Beatles. You know what I think is funny is that when most people are writing about a bug beetle, they spell it wrong. And it's all because of that band.....

ok. here are my additions to the list.

Hoobastank
third eye blind (is there even an organism with a third eye? maybe, since there are no three eyed things, they meant, just two eyes, as one eye is blind....)
Wu Tang Clan (is it really all for the children??....)
Incubus (I know what the definition is, do you? )

you know how difficult it is for me to choose when there have already been some good picks??

Great lists everyone, but let's have 3-5 selections per list, please. Keep up the great list making, or whatever you want to call it.

Yes, MsD. is right; it is Six Pence None the Richer. They had those hit songs "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes" (I think that's the title). Come to think about it, that was three years ago. Time goes by quickly, doesn't it?

My final remarks here are probably going to come under some criticism, but I'm fine with that. For people who have posted over five weird band names, I'm only going to include their first five selections for the final list. I personally don't think its fair for anyone whose personal list had 3-5 selections, considering the fact that we've gone with 3-5 selections for the past two lists.

Now, I understand that its difficult to scroll back through fifty years (or more) of music history and come up with a personal list of 3-5 selections. I also understand that its easy to get carried away with some things, especially when people are enjoying themselves. Trust me, I don't like having to tell everyone, "Hey, I'm cutting you off at five," but I have to out of fairness.

This doesn't mean that we're going to stick with 3-5 selections in future lists. When the next list comes up, I'll probably expand the number of selections a person can make for their personal list, so I'm going to ask people here for some suggestions. How many selections do you all think we should have for personal lists? Remember, the expansion has to walk to fine line of making things a little easier (but not too easy) for people, while also allowing a good number of people to participate.

I have a feeling things will depend on the topic itself, but I leave the forum up to everyone here who has a suggestion.

So what's an Incubus? The definition is REALLY weird : A demon with male appearance, who aims at having sexual intercourse with sleeping women. In medieval Europe, the union with this demon was said to be the reason of the birth of witches, other demons and disfigured children. Even Merlin the magician is said to be procreated by an Incubus. The common translation and meaning of Incubus is now "nightly demon".

Spooky...

hehe. oops. I forgot about the 3-5 selections. mm. I feel stupid now. hehehe. oh well. I shall edit. la la la. Yes. And Alex, you are correct about the Incubus thing. I have always wondered whether the band was going for the holy night terror side of the definition or the rape and pillaging theme.

i honestly can't think of a band name that strikes me as "weird." but then again, i always like to find out where band names come from. after finding out where a name originates, it doesn't seem very unusual to me... or maybe it's because i have spent much time trying to come up with band names.

Steph: I don't want anybody feeling stupid over forgetting something. Everybody does it. For the message board, that's why they have an edit button.

MsD: You know I couldn't ignore you.

Alex: You did me proud with that answer, absolutely fabulous and I'm not talking about the show either.

Sleeping women, huh? I know people have their own turn ons and stuff, but you know, I prefer my women awake thank you. I think its a sad state of affairs for someone to sneak up on sleeping women just to score with them. And if that incubus can't wake the woman up during intercourse, then the incubus isn't doing his job right!

Okay, I know there are hundreds of people just anxiously awaiting to post their list of weird band names. They're just waiting to make a fashionable entrance. Okay, for those waiting to make a fashionable entrance, the deadline for posting choices will be at midnight (EST) Tuesday. That's when voting will start.

About 44 minutes ago, the deadline for personal lists past. Voting will begin now. Like the previous lists, you will get to choose fifteen bands from the final list of forty. If for some reason there are bands on the final list that don't have weird names, you can use your anti-vote. You have three anti-votes overall, but only one anti-vote for one choice. In short, you can pick 15 bands that you feel have weird names, and you can use three anti-votes for bands you feel have pretty normal names. E-mail me with your votes or questions, the deadline for voting is midnight (EST) on Tuesday July 16th.

I do want to say right now that everybody did an outstanding job. If anything, this particular list was way more challenging than I originally imagined, and everyone showed why we are one of the greatest groups of people on the internet. I mean that. At any rate, its late, but I'm looking forward to seeing all your votes.

Here is the final list:

Cogumelo Plutão (Mushroom Pluto)
Pato Fu (Duck Fu)
Toad and the Wet Sprocket
Everything but the Girl
The Beatles
Hootie and the Blowfish
Barenaked Ladies
Limp Bizkit
Blink 182
Weezer
Papa Roach
Alien Ant Farm
Badly Drawn Boy
Shake Well Before Use
The Bad Examples
Iron Curtain Revisited
String Cheese Incident
Pearl Jam
Echo & the Bunneymen
Portishead
Quarashi
Sneaker Pimps
The Flaming Lips
The Goo Goo Dolls
Vertical Horizon
Hoobastank
Third Eye Blind
Wu Tang Clan
Incubus
The Yeasty Girls
Jehovah's Waitresses
The Blow Monkeys
Buster Hymen & the Penetrators
The The
Insane Clown Posse
Buffalo Daughter
Nightmares On Wax
D.A.D (Disneyland After Dark)
Crash Test Dummies
Dog's Eye View
Hooverphonic
Lamb
Limp Bizkit
G. Love and Special Sauce
Wham
Enema... oh I mean Eminem... but Enema is more appropriate
O-Town

Tammy: I understand completely. At some point in time in our lives, we've all been busy. Tina can tell you how busy I was just a few months ago with school work, and I couldn't post as much or quickly respond to my e-mail. So, its all good.

Tina: Thank you for letting me know about your e-mail, I hope you get it back up soon. Computers, sometimes we can't live with them, but we can't live without them either.

I'm sorry that I took so long in posting the results, but I had a busy day at work. When I got home, all I could do is nap. Here are the results:

Overall, six people voted, and they selected eighty-two bands. They also used the anti-votes nine times. Unlike the last MB List, where the anti-vote didn't play a major role, the anti-vote prevented The The from making the final list. The The had receieved three votes, but when the anti-votes had been tabulated, the group's oveall total decreased to two. For the final lists, acts who received three to five votes made it onto the final list. There are thirteen bands on this list.

Toad and the Wet Sprocket-- 5 votes
G. Love and the Special Sauce-- 5 votes
Echo & the Bunneymen-- 4 voes
Buster Hymen & the Penetrators-- 4 votes
Papa Roach-- 3 votes
Alien Ant Farm-- 3 votes
Badly Drawn Boy-- 3 votes
Shake Well Before Use-- 3 votes
Sneaker Pimps-- 3 votes
The Flaming Limps-- 3 votes
The Goo Goo Dolls-- 3 votes
Hoobastank-- 3 votes
The Yeasty Girls-- 3 votes

Thank you to everyone who participated, whether its in submitting lists or voting.

As things stand right now, I'm going to give the MB List a break for awhile. There have been three lists, and for the most part, they have been well received. However, one thing I don't want to do is to wear out the welcome of future lists. With that in mind, I think a vacation is in store for the time being, but don't worry, there will be more lists to come. Future lists will include:

Best Soundtracks
Guilty Pleasures (Artists You Hate to Love)
Best Boogie Songs
Worst Soundtracks
Great Rock-n-Roll Movies

well. I still think that Hoobastank should have won, dang it...I guess I will have to live with it being among the top. And I think we need to have a best road song list somewhere along the line. I have a few songs in mind already.
