I just bought the new Moby cd, 18, and it made me wonder about what other new cds people are listening to and enjoying. Anyone care to share new purchases that are worth a listen?

Yeah, you should check out Daniel G. Harmann. Very similiar in style to Duncan Sheik. He's got MP3s on his website at http://www.hellotower.com. You can also order the CD directly from there. You won't be sorry...

alana davis - fortune cookies (a 2000/2001 album)

Jimmy Eat World's new cd Bleed American is really good. I saw one of there commercials last summer promoting their cd, when they were still pretty much unknown. I took advangage of the high speed internet at school and checked them out and I was really surprised at how good it was. I also got into a new band called Rearview Mirror, i think there new single is called In THE Beginning.

Rochelle! I love Harry Connick Jr, and Andrew....same with Paul Westerberg...thx for the tips!!

Another one worth a mention is David Gray. His White Ladder is truly superb! And for those that really liked the Verve, Richard Ashcroft has a cd called "Alone With Everybody" that is also quite good.

Also, Sister Hazel is a good band, I would classify them as alternative country, and I am so NOT what you would call a C&W; fan, but this band is good! I only have two of their cd's. (somewhere more familiar and fortress, both are excellent IMO)

Kellye, there you go with Spirit and Bryan Adams again. The movie was fine, but the songs were so terrible that I had to cover my ears. That had to be the worst movie music I have ever heard!

Check out
Josh Joplin Group
Sister Hazel
Eve 6
Barenaked Ladies

I have to agree with Crystal on the Norah Jones CD.... I got it for my birthday and it's really great.

I'm also digging the new Dishwalla album "opaline".... I don't have any of their previous albums, but I picked up their new one just for kicks without hearing any of it beforehand and it's really fantastic. I can't compare it to their previous work, but you guys should definitely check it out.

The only Dishwalla CD I have is "Pet Your Friends," which came out seven years ago. From what I understand, the band went through a period of musical transformation between their first and second CDs, moving away from the grunge sound of their debut to something more layered and complicated on their sophmore effort. I'll have to check out "Opaline" to see where the group goes!

As for new music, I purchased Belle & Sebastian's new CD "Storytelling (Soundtrack)" a couple of weeks ago. Its a collage of instrumental cues, dialogue tracks taken from the movie, and six new songs. The music is, for the most part relatively short, since the CDs eighteen tracks run approximately thirty-four minutes long. For the most part, the music is tuneful and enjoyable. "Wandering Alone," "Fuck This Shit," "I Don't Want to Play Football," and "Scooby Driver" are some of the standouts from the CD. Yet, "Storytelling" also has some of its weaker moments, such as Isobel Campbell's (who recently left the band, but more on that later) "Storytelling."

To get to the point, "Storytelling" has some strong moments, and overall its a good CD. Yet, when compared to what Belle & Sebastian has done in the past, "Storytelling" is an uneven effort. The fact that the CD only has six full-length songs tells me that Belle & Sebastian will have another new CD in the next year, but that's just a prediction/speculation on my part.

Richard

P.S.: Also check out Rubyhorse's debut CD, "Rise." In my opinion, "Rise" is a pretty strong debut album (see my June 6th thread on Rubyhorse for more information ).

The Moby String Quartet Tribute by Vitamin Records is pretty friggin' good. I keep meaning to get their Radiohead Ok Computer String Tribute and Bjork String Tribute. Have you guys heard these albums?

I also have been enjoying Semisonic's All About Chemistry (yeah, i know it's a 2001 album so it's not exactly new) and "rediscovered" their previous albums. Their music is heat-inducing and fun and silly and simply rocks.

There's this new band I'm into. They're pretty good and hopefully are on the verge of making it big. They deserve it and they're extremely sweet

Their name is MATTHEW

This isn't new music, but it's new to me...
I just heard "Coming Up Roses" by Owsley. I think it's a great song. Does anyone know anything about this artist? I can't seem to find his other songs.

Sirena
Cousteau

In Greek mythology, a siren is a woman of the sea whose sweet singing lures mariners to destruction. Throughout literature sirens have been portrayed as enticing, beautiful, dangerous, deceptive, and mesmerizing. The music on Cousteau's second album is an aural approximation of the literary siren - mysterious, romantic, and lush.
Together for just over four years, the British ensemble debuted in 1999 with a stunning album that evoked the lush art-rock stylings of Roxy Music and the conceptual musing of David Bowie. Cousteau's musical mission consists of recreating deep musical atmospheres, inspired by the famous Jacque Cousteau, the French oceanographer who they took their name from.

On Sirena, Cousteau return with a dazzling sophomore effort, a collection of songs that have no connection or relevance to any current musical style, and whose masterful ambience is an outgrowth of singer Liam McKahey's brooding, rapturous, soaring vocals and Davey Ray Moor's emotional pop songwriting.

Reflective and intimate, songs like ""Nothing So Bad," "Talking To Myself," and "Hungry Times," find touchstones in the grandiose styling of Scott Walker, the melancholic allure of Nick Cave, even the traditionalist American pop songs of Cole Porter.

hmmm. Yeah. I agree with a lot of things already listed. Rubyhorse is really good. Pete Yorn rocks. John Mayer. Sheryl Crow (just skip "Soak Up the Sun" and it's a pretty good cd). um. um. There must be more...ahhh...I can't remember.

I agree that Sister Hazel is a great band...they are in between records right now, but will have a new record out in early 2003. I personally can't wait!

Also...Jump, Little Children is an unbelievable band...they use all sorts of interesting instruments in their music (upright bass, cello, accordian, harmonica, tin whistle, and so much more!) but you can't really fully appreciate them until you see them live--their website is www.jumplittlechildren.com.

Howie Day is awesome...

Abra Moore is cool...and she's back...her new record is coming out soon (anyone remember her song "Four Leaf Clover?")

man...i could go on and on...I'm also really into two bands from nashville with very different sounds... one is sort of like elvis costello-- will hoge. And the other is more like Oasis/The Verve-- The Rugs.

there's also this new guy named Wil Seabrook who just got signed to Maverick Records who is great--very soulful...he's on tour with Dishwalla (another good one!) right now... www.wilseabrook.com.

OK, let's see...who else is new that i've been listening to?? Well, I also love this guy named Butch Walker (don't know if you guys will really like him...his music is absolutely nothing like Duncan's...he's what i'd call power-pop) He's been around for a long time--his old band is the Marvelous 3. Now he's solo...i love his record...it's pure fun.

ohh....how could i forget splender! i love splender...and they are releasing a new album in August! I can't wait!

ok, that's all for now...
