Yes, for visiting the boards on weekends, you get to help me decide what tattoo I should get...Actually, I was going to post this anyway, so there ya go. So, who here wants a tattoo? Who here has one? What should I get and where? All the answers should be posted here at my tattoo headquarters.
I am thinking about a Celtic design. Maybe not a cross, but perhaps a Celtic circle or knot....Here are some sights. Feel free to volunteer your opinions and/or other ideas.

Doh. I forgot to put the links in here...

I don't have a tattoo, but for some reason, I think you would have an interest Neo-Celtic Serpents as a possible tattoo idea (sheet 12). Either that or the Heart Band (sheet 6).

Just my two cents.

Hi sweetie. I honestly dont know what you should get. It is definitely not a decision that should be made quickly. This stuff is per-ma-nent. Dont fuck around with it. Needle + Blood + Permanence = Not to be fucked around with. So give yourself some time. Now as far as design...are you irish? I assume like everyone else on the east coast you are "part irish". Anyway, if you feel close to the heritiage, getting a celtic knot is fine. But i think (personally) that these are cliche. As with butterfies, roses, and anything tribal. I would also stay away from anything that invokes a religious debate. You never know when you are going to date a Jewish guy...I would stick to something very uniquely you.

For example, for me, my favorite poet is Rimbaud. Once upon a time he wrote this poem in latin (it was a school exercise) about "being chosen". He used the phrase TU VATES ERIS meaning (not literally translated. [literally it means "thou shalt be a seer" but something is lost in the traslation here]) YOU WILL BE A POET. Which i find very beautiful and the poem is fantastic and blah blahblah. If i was ever to get a tattoo, i would definitely get that phrase in a sort of quill ink cursive splattered sort of style. But it that is something that only I would love.

WARNING: beware of tattoos in other languages. Why? here is an urban myth. But im sure this always happens.

my friend jake got this cool tattoos of chinese symbols on his arm. they mean peace, tranquility, and balance. then I asked Mr. Cho to take a look at Jake's arm to tell us what he thought of my friends totally rad tats. Mr. Cho laughed and said that those did not mean peace tranquility and balance. They meant Salt, Pepper and Ketchup.

Oh what...you dont think it could happen to you?

Remember, people are going to ask you all the time what it means, no matter what you get. There has to be something behind the symbol or words. Dont let it be "oh it just looked cool, so i scarred my skin". I would think of something like when you watch a movie and you think :that character is just like me:, well, why? what makes s/he remind you of youself? Maybe you could find a symbol that reflected that...

Second thing. Placement. Where do you want it? This is also very important. It has to be someplace where you can hide it (atleast for females. I think men look fine with stuff on their arm But you never know when you are going to have to look conservative ladies, like at your wedding). And there are spots on the body that are inheriently more (ahem) feminine than others. (Not there, silly! Naughy naughty mind.) Like on the small of the back, or lower stomach. But the lower back is a pretty painful place to start with. Maybe the stomach is a good beginner one. You can cover it when you father makes you go to some family Christmas dinner with Grandma Beth and the rest of your scary family youve been SO looking forward to all year! But you can let the tattoo be seen when you are on the beach and in a bikini galloping in the surf and whatnot.

Anyway, have fun! I think its a cool way to express youself and you definitely have to have the innards to have someone repeatedly poke you with a needle so you can have a picture on your skin. Its a cool test of self.

Tell us what you get.

Cool Examples of Cool Tattoos:

Jude Law (achi wawa) has a tattoo on this inner forearm with something his wife wrote when they were first together. It seemed to be written on a small piece of paper and the tattoo is in her handwriting. Sounds like love to me.

Angelina Jolie's tattoo with the giant tilted cross and the latin phrase translated to mean "what feeds me, destroys me" or something like that. Crosses (especially ones like Justin Timberlake's that are huge and bulgy) are always kinda scary to me. That is something that only she is twisted enough to unbutton her fly and allow someone to write on her.

Henry Rollins has a barcode on the back of his neck. Along with many others.

I have a small tattoo. It's the Chinese symbol for "poem." I like writing poetry, it was small, and it looked pretty cool. So, I let some fat, hairy biker dude brand the symbol on to my ankle I don't have any regrets at all, and I thought about getting it for all of two seconds. I just went through with it. I knew that if I thought about it for too long, I would never get it. The most important thing is to get something that will always be important to you. If it's important to you, you will love it forever. It's been a year since I got mine done, and I'm still extremely happy that I did it!!! I look at it as the permenant accessory, sort of like a piece of jewelry you never have to take off. Good luck Steph!!!

Cheers,
Sam

Oh yeah, Spring is also right about getting foreign words put on your skin!!! If you do it, make sure you know a friend that knows the language before you get it done. My friend knows Chines so I know for certain that it is the word poem that is on my ankle, and not salt or ketchup. LOL!!

get the dragon wheel tatoo on the first page. If you can't decide on any of those, I could draw a few up for you and you can decide from there. bring it to the tatoo artist and he'll do it.

A small tattoo on a woman can be quite cool if done right. I think placement and choosing the right thing for you (Mari brought up some excellent points) is what is most important. I've seen a pic of Sam's tattoo - it is VERY cool. I'd stay away from putting it in an obvious place - I have a friend who has short hair and a large dragon tattoo at the base of her neck. So whenever she turns her head, people just stare at her tattoo (I have nothing against dragons - it is just TOO large!!)

I agree - pick something important to you and be subtle about where you have it placed, and you'll be happy with it Steph. It is painful to have the sucker removed when you're 60 - so I'd stay away from Mr. Steve from Blue's Clues (Kellye - you silly wacko... ). Also, watch out for "tattoo addiction!" You don't wanna end up looking like Ozzy Ozbourne or something, geez.
Good luck!
Shari.

You should get one that means something to you- not a boyfriend or anything like that. Something will be in your memory for as long as you live, 'cos that's how long you'll have to have your tatoo. It should be like a journal or something, you know.

I don't have a tatto!! I porbably will never get one, I'll probably get tired of it, then what?

cherios!

We all should hope Kellye is feeling better today. She was slightly off her rocker on Sunday. Thanks for your suggestion, but I think I'd stay away from a picture of a scary guy on my butt. I'm also not dying my hair green for you.
I have thought about a dragon around my ankle. My sister said I should get the Colorado Rockies symbol, I thought about maybe the Avs symbol or Broncos head...So many choices. And I don't intend to become as tattooed as Henry Rollins or Ozzy Osbourne, so don't worry. I want one tattoo. I know where I want it, now I just need to decide what I want. Hey, have you seen the video for The Calling's song...um...what's it called...Wherever you may go? Anyway, the girl goes and gets "Jake" tattooed on her arm and then finds Jake in bed with another girl. Yeah, definantly don't want to go there, so names are out unless it's my own.

I will admit straight out I am anti-tattoo, it looks dirty, and it is not just on women, on anyone. I would take a bullet to the head before allowing someone to tattoo my body. I would even go as far to say I would never be able to date someone with a tattoo, it would bother me too much. I do not understand why anyone would want to permanently alter their body; I mean seriously what was ‘cool’ when I was 18, means nothing to me now, and will even mean less when I am 65. Yet when you are 65 you will still have this mark on your body to remind you of what you thought was ‘cool’ years ago. I have a friend, who got tattooed when she was 18, she has three of them, two of which, now at 26 she is completely humiliated by and uses bandages to hide them every single day, the third is a band on her ankle which she can not hide.

Think of this, why do you want a tattoo? I mean seriously, be honest with yourself, why? If your answer is just because you want one, or because it looks cool, think harder. If it is something symbolic (and if you are asking us what to get, I am thinking it is not symbolic) go ahead, I mean I know people that have got them to symbolize a divorce or special event in their life. And if it is to prove you could do it, or so people will ask you about it, and think you are cool for it, get counseling. Remember it is the rest of your life, that you will have this mark on your body. If you just feel like doing something, get pierced (you can take them out) but not your tongue, which can cause long term problems (a study was released this weekend, for those who might not believe me).

just a suggestion. try using a henna tattoo first since it's temporary. then if you like the design and you wanna go for permanence then go to the tattoo parlor.

Ok, Jenn and I discussed this last night, but I just wanted to add a little here. Ok, one of the reasons I haven't gotten a tattoo yet is I do want it to mean something to me. I don't want to rush into something as permenant as a tattoo. I also don't have money for it, but that's another issue all together. I just wondered how everyone would respond to this topic. Thanks for your replies.
