Yo, homies and homettes, I picked up a cool lil disc recently...Ed Harcourt's Here Be Monsters. I don't know if he sounds exactly like anyone, but I heard echoes of Jeff Buckley, Coldplay/Starsailor/Travis and more. It has a definate moodiness to it, sort of a menace of sorts...really neato. And, if you like new Billie Holidays, check out Norah Jones...not too shabbyliscious. IP: Logged |

That is an excellant recommendation Ken. In my opinion, "Here Be Monsters" is full of dry humour, strong melodies, and a sense of despondency. I think you can hear Jeff Buckley in the song "Apple of My Eye," which features a strong, confident voice. At the same time, Ed's songs can have an Elliott Smith feel to them, as illustrated in "Hanging in the Wrong Crowd." "Shanghai," in its epic-like ending, can be from the same mold as an Elton John piano stomp. He also reminds me of Tom Waitts with his lyrics. Overall, I think its a great CD. Has anyone listened to his "Maplewood Studios" EP, a six song collection that came out before "Here Be Monsters"? Richard IP: Logged |

I got the cd yesterday. It does remind me a lot of Jeff Buckley vocally, but not quite the same style. I got in trouble for comparing their voices on a JB messageboard. It's good stuff though. I've also recently gotten into Josh Clayton-Felt. It's pop, which I'm not usually that into, but his voice makes it worth it. Jamie IP: Logged |

that's a good comparison, Richard, using Elliott Smith (I tried his first three albums and couldn't get into it, the songs just seemed to drift away like dandelions or something, but Figure 8 I like more). IP: Logged |
