I am one of the few people in the world that has not make the change to DVD, and will not be making it any time soon, as I just bought a VCR less than a year ago (I owned one before, it broke), the reason I stuck with tape, first off because I have many movies on video cassette. And also the entire recorder part, most of what I watch it what I have recorded from TV (ie Coronation Street), and in order to have done that I would have to spend a fortune or have bought both anyway. I have watched a DVD before, and as a person more interested in the actual story in a movie, and really I could not see much difference in quality. As for how long it lasts, i have had videos for 10 plus years that still run fine.

yes add The Ref to your dvd collection. That is a great movie. Add some comedy to your collection as well. Happy Gilmore is a classic, it is a must have for any collection. A Long Kiss Goodnight is also a good one to have, Samuel L Jackson is great in it. Yellowbeard is funny, it is that Monty Python humor, and also a comedy classic. Here are some other of my favorites.

Something About Mary
The Time Machine (the original version)
Austin Powers
The Emporor's New Groove
Billy Madison
Tommy Boy (I love Chris Farley)
Shrek
Willow

oops time for my daughters karate class, will give ya more when I have time.

I can play DVDs on my computer, but I don't buy them. I haven't bought any movies for a while anyway. I usually rent. One DVD I've seen enough of is Charlie's Angels. My ex-roommate got it and it was the only DVD she had for a while, so she would watch it on her computer ALL. THE. TIME! It was annoying. I'll never see that movie again.
So, yeah, no DVD suggestions!

No, the quality is much better than vhs tapes. Its digital data for crying out loud!! I got a dvd player for xmas and i poped in my new American Psycho movie which i had seen about a million times. And even I could tell that they picture was much clearer. There is also better sound, but i only use the tv speakers, so i dont get that much difference.

And dont you want all that dvd extra stuff they keep throwing in there now like interviews and commenteries and whatnot? I was able to get a lot of things not offered on vhs like the complete Monty Python Flying Circus boxset. If you can find a cheap one, it is a really great buy.

Personally, I go for all the extra stuff on the DVDs, like the outtakes & deleted scenes. I also like that I can put the movie in another language (usually french) and watch it with English subtitles - remember, I'm a French teacher. This kind of feature is important to me.

I got both a new VCR & a new DVD for christmas this year, because they're not mutually exclusive. You still can't record onto a DVD (at least, I don't think so...), so you need a VCR. But, even a die-hard VCR aficionado can admit without shame that the picture quality on a DVD is much better than the VCR.

Yes, the quality is finger licking great. I personally like the directors commentary, and I enjoy looking for easter eggs, some of them are worth the price of the DVD, Hey Jenn, you mentioned you saw the Moulin Rouge DVD, did you see the Funny Outtake With Nicole And Ewan? Anyway, Fight Club is another great movie, and I can't believe I almost forgot "The Usual Suspects" this is the kind of movie you watch 3 times the firs time you go What? the second you go huu... and the third you go wow..

I agree DVD is much better in the quality department. And you dont have to worry about your DVD getting eaten. Contact with Jodie Foster is another good movie. One of my favorites.

As I said the quality is of no difference to me, I am not saying there is no difference I am saying I can not see a difference that is notable to my eye, I am not interested in spending hundreds of additional dollars to have the best sound and if I can see the picture it is good enough for me (the same reason I will not spend $100/month on digital cable). The ability to watch something in French (I hate subtitles), again not important to me. Why would I want to sit at watch outtakes? I actually do not find them all that much of interest, I watch a movie to see a movie, not a whole bunch of other stuff. And the added scenes, they are thrown in the end, they do not actually enhance the film. Poe, no I did not watch the outakes from Moulin Rouge. I have never had a VHS eaten, but I have had plently of CD's get stratched, would that not happen with a DVD?

In addition, I do not rent movies, I only watch ones are things I record from TV or sometimes a movie a already own, therefore why would I want to change my entire format, replace my entie movie collection, and how long will it last? Until the next "coolest" thing comes out? Think about it, it all started with Beta (many people ran out and bought Beta, not waiting to see if it would last), than VHS happen, than Lazer Disk, it is not going to stop at DVD. From what I understand parts of Asia and Europe have already made the transformation from CD to mini-disk for music needs, how long before the same is not what is offered movies? I know there is definently recordable DVD's for the computer envinvironment, I would imagine there are as well for television (but at a higher cost), so I think for now I will stick with the perfectly acceptable, user friendly (yes I admit the concept of how to use a DVD player boggles my mind, at no point should it ever take someone 10 minutes to figure how to get to the begining of the movie), recordable, affordable format of VHS.

Just a question:

Has anyone here seen K-PAX on DVD?

I heard somewhere that there is an alternate ending or something to that effect on the DVD and I was just wondering what it was (Yes I am still behind the times with my old trusty VRC...lol) I loved K-PAX.I thought it was a really good movie... although it does leave a lot to be pondered. So if anyone could help me with this I would REALLY appreciate it! Many thanks.

A DVD player-less donut,

AMERICAN BEAUTY!!! Yes! That movie gives me goose bumps EVERY TIME I WATCH IT! Plus, if you have it on DVD, you can quickly get to the plastic bag scene. That movie is truly moving, life affirming, and philosophical. And is it just me, or does Wes Bentley have a Duncan-esque thing goin' on. Not as much as some of the mock Sheiks out there, but a little bit, yeah? Ah... Oh, yeah & I love the Nightmare Before Christmas too...

everywhere lies within everyone,

Julie, I saw KPax on DVD and they probably do have alternate endings. They dont change the movie per se, but sometimes a director films alternate endings so when he is in the editing room, he might find out that a different ending is better. From what I remember from watching the movie, the alt ending wasnt drastically different as far as story line, but it was just filmed differently. In my opinion, the version you see in the final movie is the better version.

First off, I really just would like to say hello. It's been awhile since, I've dropped in. I've been heavy hearted lately and have been watching plenty of movies to escape the feeling.

So far from what I've seen on dvd the best have been:

Sex and the City seasons 1 and 2

Psycho (the original version, it comes with a great documentary and you even get to see the famous shower scene w/out the music which is weird)

Rear Window (another great Hitchcock film, my fav. of his actually, this also has a behind the scenes segment)

Monthy Python and the Holy Grail ( but you already know that, Springroz. I think the Lego vision is hilarious)

Riding In Cars With Boys- ( I rented this one recently and was surprised at how good it was. There was alot of soulful thought put into this movie and there are special features that discuss why the houses looked the way they do, or the significance of the cars used, etc.)

Shrek (I like the fact that you can ask the mirror questions)

Manhatten (out of all of Woody Allen's films this one is the visionary stunner. On dvd it's gorgeous and Gershwin's music sounds like it surrounds you.)

Citizen Kane (Packaged beautifully you get an extra disc of goodies all about the movie. The film also looks great.)

Hey Aileen, I love the original Time Machine also! But I didn't know it's been released on dvd, I'm going to have to check it out.
