"..I catch myself smile... more than you'd ever expect."

Hi guys. I've actually been thinking about this topic for a while. I'm glad I finally have the time to share.

Do any of you ever get caught in a moment throughout a crazy day that smiply makes you smile because of its' sheer beauty? I know it may sound a bit corny, but lately-- I've been taking notice to the little things in life that ones' busy schedule may not "pencil in" as important or even worthy of a second thought and it's actually brought me happiness.

With this said, I thought we could share our daily, magical instances and post them here. Who knows, maybe your specific story will not only make *you* smile, but someone else as well.

I'll begin

The other day, I was walking down the street one night after a long day of work at a large new england newspaper (I'm a co-op, a glorified name for an stinkin'intern so you can imagine what my job is like) and, I turned to my left as I was passing the Boston Symphony. Out of the door comes a mother and a laughing child on her back. She was giving him a piggyback ride and this little child was having a ball!! I know it's not something huge, but just seeing him having the time of his life with his mom made me smile. It brought me back to my childhood when I had no worries, and thus made me beam with happiness.

Life is too good to let the bad things out weigh moments of joy.

*Maria*

Hi, Maria! Reading your post made me smile! Thank you for sharing the beautiful moment. This is an awesome thread you started and I hope others write in here as well.
I work at a home day care and I understand what you mean about simple pleasures and going back to childhood.
Yesterday, I made my very first snowman in these 24 years I've been alive. I was completley in awe about, how easy the snow rolled to form the body and how beautiful and serene the sky looked.
The winter scene yesterday sort of invited me to try to be silent and feel what is in and around me.

I'm looking forward to reading other posts on this subject.

Amy, you had never made a snow man?? I love making snow creatures, men, women and kids. Let's see...happy visions....
Ok, I when ever I see animals playing in the field, or looking happy to see me, my stomach does a little flop and I feel so happy. I imagine what it must be like to have no prejudices to deal with and to be able to run around with no one looking at you funny. What a life that would be, huh?

Ye-uh! I'm so glad you're enjoying this thread. I'm happy my little story made you smile Yours did the same for me! The best thing about snowy days, aside from the day with out school, was defintely-- meeting up with all my friends to make snowmen and having snowball fights. Such a childhood staple. I'm so glad you got to experience it!

Just goes to show it's never to late to do anything.

I witnessed another smile-worthy moment today. After getting off the T to transfer to another train, I noticed a young guy juggling with no one around. But, the thing that really got me was that he didn't have a bucket or anything for donations. He was just doing it because he loved to and something this simple just amazes me!!

Again, this isn't something monumental, but it got me thinking... how many people would do something if they weren't going to get something in return? Unfortuntely, it's probably less than we would want to think. I'm going to follow this guy's lead & try to improve myself. I'm sure it couldn't hurt.

OK, back to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

We become shadows of ourselves,

Maria

oh my gosh!! this is a great topic maria!! i think about this all the time. i love to share things that bring a smile to my face. there are so many small things that happen everyday that just give me a reason to live. i will name off a couple, (some are realizations more than anything)

*being young and enjoying life right before i hit the real world (i am 17 and a jr in hs)

*this little thing they call "puppy" love.

*driving by the park and looking at the happy families have a bar-b-que. not many people have families to do so.

*going to school everyday where there are teachers that LOVE what they are doing. my teachers enjoy teaching and they wouldnt want to be anywhere else but there. i hope someday i can find a profession i enjoy as much as they do.

i could probably think if many more but i am short on time. i will update later when some more thing pop into my head. this will be a great thread!

I also LOVE this topic! Ok, here's my little story. Yesterday I was driving down the road, and there was a school bus driving in the opposite direction, so I had to stop. 3 little kids get off the bus, take off running to their house, and I look over and they're grandpa (I presume) was standing there waiting for them. They were all hugging him, and there was smiles, and it was amazing! My eyes teared up and that's when I thought of this topic!

You mentioned so many great moments!

Hot diggity dog! Family BBQ's are THE best things I look forward to in the summertime. Food just seems to taste better when's it's made outside by a loved one. Yum.

What you mentioned about teachers was dead on. My personal favorites back in high school were undoubtly, the ones who loved what they were doing for a living. It's so apparent too, and that defintely comes across to their students.

*Jen*

I LOVED your story!! I couldn't stop smiling. I just melt when I see anyone under 4 feet run toward the open arms of someone they just LOVE! Their lil legs runnin'; bookbag flappin' all over the place... too cute for words.

Today I was walking to get some dinner and I saw these two little girls playing a handgame in the window of the resturant.

"Miss... ma-r-y....MACK MACK MACK, all dressed in BLACK BLACK BLACK!..."

Gosh, being 7 was such a fun age.

I'm so glad you gals are enjoying this topic! It makes *me* smile

MARIA

Sneaking into an empty building in Balboa Park on St Patrick's day and listening to Leslie play the grand piano.
A homeless man walking down the sidewalk with a sign saying "smile, it's free"
Standing in my yard and realizing there's a full moon every single month, and I somehow fail to look up and appreciate it.
Watching a mother blow up and tie a produce bag like a balloon for her child to play with.
Looking around my painting class, and seeing a room full of people creating. Expressing their souls, and sharing their visions.
Waiting in line before a Rufus Wainwright concert, watching a group of people trying to entice a stray dog with potato chips.
Closing my eyes while on the phone, cherishing the sound of his voice. For a moment not hearing what he was saying, just cherishing his voice.

I suppose that's enough for now. I keep notebooks
I think you all will appreciate www.randomaccessmemory.com, visit it!

Welcome Strangefruit! (Great name btw ) Your accounts of smile worthy moments were beautiful. I've noticed that smile worthy moments come up quite a bit at Rufus Wainwright shows. Whether it's outside before the concert, or just the between song batner good 'ol Rufus has between his band and the audience. I've never had such a fun time at a show when the songs weren't being performed. He's just one hell of an entertainer. Or, better yet-- like he's described himself-- a full on DIVA!

Booyaa!

Maria

PS-- I just saw this guy rockin' insane mullet action! It was classic

Isn't it a Billie Holiday song too?

I only know that because I have a version Jeff Buckley did of the song on a CD of mine.
Does anyone know if they're the same songs... I'm kinda curious.

Thanks!

Pertaining to the topic: Isn't it sweet and smile worthy when people call you "hun"? Especially elderly people who you don't particulary know you, per say... that's just too cute.

The "Strange Fruit" I know and love was originally sang by Billy Holiday, and I too have Jeff Buckley's cover. I haven't heard of the UB40 song, I'll have to check it out.

I have the "Strange Fruit" song by Billie Holiday, wonderful little song. So sad and mournful and thought provoking. You do know what the song is about, I hope.
Anywhoo, love this topic. I have a child development professor who loves what she does for a living and she expresses it soo passionately, a completely beautiful way. She has helped me change my P.O.V and everytime I see a little kid running by, I smile. Do that, believe me you'll feel a whole lot better.
Little kids are so full of life and freedom and purity. Seeing them is the closest thing to seeing the true meaning of life.
Also, waking up to see the sun rise is completely breathtaking. You sit there and out of complete darkness, the world starts to awaken and you see all of Mother Nature's beautiful creations awaken. It's soo beautiful and wonderful.
Always smile when you see little things in life because it's hard not to.

It's great to see that this thread is still going strong!

This "moment" happened last Thursday, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was cleaning the oven in my apartment with, the windows open and the "Red Hot and Rhapsody" cd blaring through my stereo (it's a collection of Gershwin tunes by current artists such as, Mr. Sheik, himself).
I stopped for a drink of water and Natahlie Merchant's cover of "But not for me" was on.

The combination of the music and the cool breezes bringing in the noise of suburban life (ambulances, trucks, etc.) made me start to cry a little but it wasn't because I was sad, I was actually happy. The deeper the feeling the harder it gets to put into words.
