Yo. Taking from the current "Pepsi" vs "Coke" discussions going on, I have a question. I was raised in Washington state, and lived in Oregon from 1986-1998. I was raised to call a carbonated beverage "pop." Then I moved here. To California. "Pop" here means that you "pop" something. Or you're a "pop" star, or whatever. It is called SODA in California. I still slip and say "pop" and people laugh! It's a riot! Still, I've heared others in my life say both - "soda-pop." So I'm just wanting to know, with respect to where different people live, what do you call a carbonated beverage? Something different from "pop" or "soda"? Have you never heard of one or the either word? That's enough questions. Shut up now Wolfie. You can't leave a simple answer to anything. So you can start now. ?IP: Logged |

Shari, you'll get a good laugh from this one...maybe. I grew up in central Illinois, and EVERYONE there (when I was young, anyway) called it sodi (sodee). That's right, sodi!!! My mom still calls it that. I swear this is the truth, when my husband and I moved to Texas in the 80's, my husband ordered a sodi. Well guess what...the man laughed. He really did. We soon found out that in Texas all carbonated beverages are called coke (even orange soda was orange coke). Bizarre, but true (where we lived anyway). We are now calling it pop or soda. So we went from sodi to coke to pop and soda. Talk about confusing!!!! ![]() Great topic Shari, I'm interested to see what everyone else calls it! Tina IP: Logged |

Hey Shari! Great topic - I have heard both words. It is most common to hear the word Soda in Florida however it seems like a lot of people from up north who come here say pop.And I have to admit I am one of those people who laugh when someone says Pop Normally I only have to say "Coke" because that's pretty much all we have around here in this house anyway because my dad loves it and hates Pepsi. Usually I either call it soda or am more specific and just call it whatever it is like Dr.Pepper or Sprite etc.(¯`·._.·´¯` Julie ´¯`·._.·´¯) [This message has been edited by BrunetteJuliette (edited February 14, 2002).] IP: Logged |

well, here in Colorado it's "pop". I have family from Illinois, and I don't believe I've EVER heard it called sodi. that is just odd! I know in the South, they usually call it coke. "Do you want a coke?" "sure" "What kind? we have coca-cola, mt. dew..." I found it hilarious they called everything coke. It confused me at first. Soda is sometimes used, but here, I usually hear pop, that's what I use. -steph IP: Logged |

It is no lie that in Tx. we call all soft drinks "cokes". My favorite coke is Dr. Pepper -lolIP: Logged |

Yep, I'm from Alabama and everybody just says Coke. I want coke....what kind? as sweetsnail says. We make fun of people who say pop. It sounds funny. But, I love you Shari. I babysit this two year old and her mommy's from up north, and she's teaching her to say pop, and I'm doing all I can to teach her that it's just "coke." ![]() IP: Logged |

I say pop, or more directly order what I want, ie. a sprite please. From what I have heard in Canada if one orders a soda they are likely to get exactly that, a glass of soda water (which tastes horrible in my mind). IP: Logged |

Tina, I quote myself in saying: "and I don't believe I've EVER heard it called sodi. that is just odd!" I didn't say anything at all about weird. ![]() Couldn't Coca-Cola sue for copyright enfringment with people saying "coke" instead of using the politically correct term of either soda or pop? I mean, you say coke, and unless you are from the South, you think Coca-Cola. It's like the bandaid thing. You are supposed to say something like sterile bandage to be politically correct....I think it's hilarious, but it's absolutely true. ![]() -steph IP: Logged |

okay, I can stop crying now, Steph! Am I the only one that called it sodi as a child?? Geez...maybe it was a Peoria thing... If any of you drive through the great city of Peoria (better yet, East Peoria where I grew up), and order a sodi -- you'll see... ![]() Tina IP: Logged |

I've heard several different names for carbonated drinks. In Maryland, I hear people say soda most of the time, although there are a few people who call them soft drinks. My grandmother uses the term sodi from time to time, so Tina shouldn't feel totally alone on this one. Of course, the closer to Pennsylvania I get, the more I hear the word pop. When my parents and I moved my sister into school (near Philidelphia), we stopped off at this diner near the Pennsylvania border. The menu had a section for beverages and it mentioned "Pop: Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite" etc. etc. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Best Regards, Richard IP: Logged |

Wow! This is cool! We almost started a message board room brawl. ![]() Too bad Tina and Steph settled it before I got here. I like gettin' low down and dirty. Now the only one I have NEVER heard of is, uh, gotta check the word again, one moment please... SODI That was fun to read. Thanks to everyone who posted - I hope we all take home something important from what we've learned here. And when I find out what that is, I'll let ya know... IP: Logged |

OK, so here in Alabama we do say sodi. But, not about cokes, about baking soda. Put some sodi in it and it'll be alright.... ![]() Kellye IP: Logged |

Here in Scotland they say juice, when they are referring to pop. How messed up is that? IP: Logged |

here in the philippines it's crazier. we call all kinds of softdrinks "coke", like you can hear someone say, "pabili ng coke, 'yung pepsi" (in english: "can i buy a coke? that pepsi right there"). or if they wanna buy toothpaste, they call it "colgate", like "pabili ng colgate, 'yung aquafresh" (in english: "can i buy a colgate? the aquafresh please"). it's really weird.
