This Topic will be for anything Guitar related, such as questions, playing, etc.
For those more experienced guitar players, "In your opinion what is the most important thing for a new guitar player to learn or do first in order to learn to play the guitar?"

i'm not very good at guitar or anything, but the best i advice i can offer is to just force yourself to play until your fingers hurt, and press down on the strings as hard as you can... it builds up callus on your fingers so you can move on to other things. G, C, D are good chords to know though. They're the basic chord progression of about a million songs I can think of. IP: Logged |

When your fingers hurt, STOP playing, you can end up hurting your ligament. Also, there are 12 guitar chords every beginner should know... Ill give them to you on Monday, I have no time now. If you are playing nylon string, you may not want to use a pick cos youll mess up the finish on the guitar... but if you are playing steel string, get a pick and on Monday Ill tell you how to hold it as well. Best wishes, Rob IP: Logged |

Hey...that smile face is missing for some reason..... But, thanks guys. I have practiced for about another hour and pretty much now have down the G, C and D chords. I noticed that these are 3 of the 6 chords for "Rubbed Out." Now, I have to just keep practicing, practicing, practicing and learn the other ones. I am using an Acoustic guitar with steel strings. They feel pretty good at the moment, but the problem is both your hand and your other hand & arms get tired from holding that proper positioning for too long. I am so very excited that I have learned this so fast, when just last night I was having much trouble with getting to learn that D chord. I want to just get to the point where I can do it without looking, or even thinking. Can't wait. Thanks for all your tips guys. What is the best way to pick up your guitar when carrying it? (If not using your strap?) Very, very happy [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited October 19, 2001).] IP: Logged |

Oh screw proper positioning. lol. I only hold my guitar "properly" when I'm playing classical music. Michele, try an F, A, Am and Em next. Em is very easy, and Am is simple if you've got the C chord down, because only one finger moves. F gives you a taste of what barring strings is like. You can also play an F maj 7, which is just an F chord w/o the barre on the 1st string. Rob, I meant playing until the skin is sore. Not until you're breaking your fingers off or something. Building up the callus on your fingers is harmless... that's how I started off, because that's how my teachers told me to. IP: Logged |

If yo are not using your strap, do not hold the guitar by the neck. You wanna hold the body and where the lower neck meets with the body, otherwise youll end up bending the neck. Also, learn how to correctly position the guitar, cos then when you know more youll have to get use to holding it correctly, and that sucks!! The same thing goes with the pick, if you dont learn how to hold it correctly now, you wont have to fuss with that in the future. Also, dont let your thumb stick out when you play a chord, it takes away the pressure you apply on the chord, and makes the chord buzz. Cassical guitar positioning and pop guitar positioning are two worlds apart... put its important to learn things correctly so you wont have to re learn them, so take your punches now kid!! I wasn't really sure about calluses on my fingers, but that seems to be a given. (A localized thickening and enlargement of the horny layer of the skin?) Do guys mind women who have calluses on their fingers? Just curious. And I'm not so sure about them on me, but probably the status quo is that there are not that many women guitar Thanks Ericka, how will I locate these chords? Thanks for the tips. I almost feel like giving up my studies to study guitar full time, but can't do that yet. It's so much fun and so very cool!!!!!!! Thanks, [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited October 19, 2001).] IP: Logged |

Ericka, How will I find F, A, Am and Em next and F maj 7? I noticed the Teacher on my tape doing that, but that's probably further down the line from today. And he was doing scales with the different chords? How do you do this? Rob, thanks for your tips. Tell me more about the positioning differences between Classical and Pop Rock guitar positioning. And those 12 chords will be great. Michele IP: Logged |

Michele, there are lots of good websites with tutorials. I don't care much for learning by tape. http://tabcrawler.com/ has tutorials, I *THINK*. If you don't find what you're looking for, I can email you the chord formations and an explanation later tonight. As for the scales... I'm guessing the guy on the tape was playing a blues or pentatonic scale possibly? There are some basic scales that can be played at any position on the neck, which is really useful in soloing... Say you're playing a chord progression in the key of A, you can start the blues scale at the 5th fret, 6th string, and play any note of that scale to make a solo. Same goes for minor and major scales. Anyway... I'm going to see Riding in Cars with Boys now, but let me know if you'd like me to email you some chord tablature. Well according to David Mead's Bass guitarist, I now know enough to go and write a song. He said all you need to know are 3 chords.I laughed and kind of did not believe him, but he has been playing guitar for 23 years, so I guess I am wrong here. Your thoughts???? And go write a song now. I already have tons of lyrics. M [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited October 20, 2001).] IP: Logged |

NO, NO, NO! First you learn the basics. Get the ball rolling, ya know? Develop your skills from there and get comfortable. If you really want to play it wont be an instrument, it will be an extension of you and your soul. And the most important rule; play what YOU want to hear, the music that you have always longed to hear. TRUST ME IP: Logged |

Great, when ever you can get to it is more than cool. I would like to hear everyones ideas on this and their experiences. I cannot wait to get to the point where I do not have to watch what I am doing. To be able to just play and not have to look. How cool that must be. Isn't that the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe that people actually play songs like, "Tom Dooley" and "He's Got The Whole World" to learn how to play guitar. This is like being put through torture. (just kidding) but close. I learned today that I was playing the D Chord wrong. Also, someone showed me how to play A Minor, E and D Minor. Those are pretty hard at first to try and get your fingers positioned properly. Do your fingers actually have to be exactly right below one another? It's hard!!!!!!! But, like all things, I'm sure practice should make almost perfect. Thanks Guys. IP: Logged |

Hey Guys, Another question. I got a book of chords last night. How in the world do you Barre some chords holding some stings down and not the others, lets say stings in between eachother?? That's super hard and how do you get your fingers to stretch into those weird positions? Also, how do you get 3 or more fingers to line up right behind eachother in a straight line on the strings?? Very curious??? Please help. [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited November 02, 2001).] IP: Logged |

maybe i can help... if you have a barre chord that requires barring the same fret on seperate strings, you will usually have your other fingers on higher frets on those empty strings. so you can go ahead and barre those notes, it won't make any difference. if you want to play three strings on one fret, just use 1 finger to barre all three notes. like in any A form barre chords, your first finger barres the root note down to the low E, and you have your ring finger barring the three notes in front of it. hope this makes sense. don't expect to get your fingers on target over night, just practice it over and over and you will get the hang of it. Gtarwhiz, For instance- A SEVENTH [A7] There are different ways to play this right? One way is having your index finger at the 5th fret Barring the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th strings. Having your middle finger on 4th. string 6fr and ring finger on the 2nd. string 7ft. Thats what I mean. When your Barring a few strings with one finger.... how do you do that... in order to hold down alternate strings on the same fret as stated above? A E G C# E A (Using an "all-purpose" voicing #2) [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited November 03, 2001).] IP: Logged |

Electric guitar is easier if you're talking about the size of the neck... I think it hurts your fingers a little less and you can stretch across more frets. But I also think that when you're just playing by yourself, and not jamming with friends, acoustic guitar is much more fun. I only play my strat when I take lessons (because I usually spend some time soloing during lessons) or when I'm jamming. SO, I'd keep playing acoustic guitar unless you're going to start a band or something. But that's just personal preference. IP: Logged |

Wuzzy, I think Dave Matthews is a fine guitarist. His rhythms are so percussive... I wonder how he sings at the same time. SO yeah, he did rip off The Police's "Every Breath You Take" in his song "Satellite," but I forgive him. He is cool by me. IP: Logged |

Whatever that song was I had heard on the radio, he wasn't really doing too much on his guitar, but that's cool. (Just observing) His beat is cool. Hope you had a nice holiday. ![]() IP: Logged |

Hey, I got the tab book of Duncan Sheik's first album for Christmas. I was so excited!! I already learned "She Runs Away", it's easier than I thought. I also got a new guitar for Christmas. It's a Seagull. Sorry for blabbing, but I just thought I would share my excitement with fellow beginners! IP: Logged |

Hey, that is super COOL!!!!!! Maybe I should get one. I want to play them as well. I'm learning, bought an acoustic guitar and an electric about 3 weeks ago. What is the book called and who published it??? IP: Logged |

The book is simply called "Duncan Sheik". It is for piano, vocal, and guitar. The good thing about it is that right on the first page it states that the guitar cords are edited by Duncan Sheik. Sometimes these books are off so the fact that he looked it over to make sure the cords were published right is a good thing. It says it is BMG music publishing. It gives a web page where I think you can order the book. It's www.halleonard.com. But if there's a certain song you want the cords too, I can email them or post them so that u dont have to buy the book. IP: Logged |

Thanks Lis. I saw this book advertised last night and thought it is probably the same one. It is. There are No pictures in it are there? Thanks Lis. Love that cover!!!!!! PS. Do you find it easy to use? IP: Logged |

I find it easy because the guitar chords are listed above the piano music. I play piano too so I know how to read it, but I just use the chords bc it's easier. For example: She Runs Away consists pretty much of: C G6 Asus2 E Then the refrain: Emaj9(on the 6th fret) Bm(on the 6th fret) G6sus2 Dsus2/F# Asus2 A If you aren't familiar with all of the chords, just find a book at that has all of the chords listed and you will find that they are pretty easy. I have my father's chord book from the 50's but they're still the same. Try it!!! IP: Logged |
