OK - The only dumb question is the one never asked, or so they told me so in high school. I know the song "A Body Goes Down" off Humming, and that Duncan wrote it about Jeff Buckley. But without graphic detail, what DID happen? Murdered and thrown into the Mississippi River? I'm not obsessed with the death of people, just curious if anyone knows the story... IP: Logged |

yep he was with a friend and he wandered out into the mississippi and was apparently sucked in. it took a couple of days to find his body. in fact, i am not sure if they ever did find his body. it was pretty freakish. and in my opinion, it wasnt fair. peace out my hommies. IP: Logged |

I can give you something better. I hope you have real player. You will love me for this gem. http://realguide.virage.com/c gi-bin/visearch?user=realguide&play.x;=1&proxy;=pnm%3A//ra.music.sony.com%3A7070/JeffBuckley/GraceFootage.rm&ccstart;=0 Hope it works. if not, go here. its priceless. i know its not really about his life. but you get to hear a piece of it, right from those blessed lips of the man himself. not a whole lot is known. the most recent book about him and his father tim buckley is called Dream Brother. it does a compare and contrast. apparently its good. Dream Brother is an excellent book- i highly recommend it. it is a bit odd reading it tho'. Jeff was a very private person it seems, and this book contains bits and pieces of his journal entries, and unmailed letters to friends. his death was a great loss. he had such potential, and was highly talented. oh, and his death- yes, it was in the Mississippi. although many people drown there every year, there are no warning signs posted. it is kinda just "known"- even still people drown there almost every summer i believe. the area he was swimming in looks fairly harmless, but the currents and undertows are overwhelming when barges pass thru. and yes, his body was found. and if i remember correctly, it was in fairly good condition considering how long he had been underwater. his mother i believe was a very smart woman. she had a blood sample taken and preserved, for DNA purposes. that way, if anyone steps foward later claiming a "love child", and demanding money from the estate, she will have DNA evidence to prove/disprove the claim... okay- for more info.... read the book. it is sad. the lives of both men were fairly tragic... more so for Jeff i believe. it is a good book, just very sad. cheers! Allright, in germany they said that he committed suicide, by drowning 'in the Missississippi waters' and it took some weeks to find his dead body... IP: Logged |

Suicide is often alluded to because he seemed like such a deep, dark person. Suicide was NOT a factor though. He had been living in Memphis gathering material for some time. The night he drowned his band was on a plane from New York on its way to record with him. I read Dream Brother as well. It is a very well put-together biography. It's also an entertaining read. so go and support your beloved Barnes & Noble who has included phantom moon on its instore play and buy the book! You can also find some rare radio interviews and recordings by Jeff using programs like Napster and Morpheus. (morpheus is a thousand times better than napster) Jeff was a very interesting person, but not the dark depressed figure that he's sometimes made out to be. He was a normal guy. and very funny so I hear. Later, IP: Logged |

jeff was lighthearted and fun, from what acquaintences say.... he swam regularly in the mississippi, in that particular spot, in fact.... it was nighttime and he dove in, clothed, to cool off. his friend was watching from the pier....a small boat passed between jeff and the pier....after the wake subsided, his friend couldn't see him anymore....he called his name several times, and after about 10 mins., he reported him missing.... jeff buckley was a light that burned out too quickly....I loved his music and I was charmed when I met him.... quite a loss.... Springie- i checked it out, and it rocked... the odd thing? Jeff Buckley has always reminded me of a friend of mine named Jeff. They look a lot alike, and after checking out your link, i realize that they have very similar speaking voices also. i will have to send that link to my friend Jeff. cool- thanks! cheers! Jeff Buckley...don't get me started...go to my site and see the Jeff Buckley page in the 'cool music' section so I don't overdo it here (www.kenmeyerjr.com). My wife, about 30, feels like he was her John Lennon. The book is really good, and good for Tim Buckley fans too (of which less had been written of up to now). Jeff Buckley's promise was immense....I honestly feel he would have had the same influence as someone like Hendrix or a few others whose careers have been cut off early. What a voice...and played great guitar too, which is often overlooked. If you know nothing of him, buy Grace and then you will most likely buy everything else you can find (for Tim Buckley, buy Dream Letter, a great double live summation of the first third of his career). End of long windedness IP: Logged |

K, so I bought "Grace" a few days ago at Borders on sale ( I had twenty five bucks on a gift card for graduation) and I just love it. Then I went to see "Shrek" today and they played a version of one of my favorite tracks in the movie: "Halleluja". I remembered someone mentioning it, but then I couldn't remember who was singing it. My friends were making fun of me as usual. I wanted to wait to see the music credits, but they finally dragged me out. -Steph IP: Logged |

I know I am responding to this rather late and yet I feel as though I must....what happened to Jeff Buckley? For many of us artists and like minds, he still remains the greatest of all muses weather or not his boots touch the earth still. It really pains me to read all the rubbish about Jeff commiting suicide when he was the epitome of life itself. On a sultry night in Memphis on May 29th 1997..the Feast of Corpus Christi no less, Jeff and a friend {Keith Foti} drove a big yellow Ryder truck around trying to find the rehearsal space because they wanted to make some noise before the rest of the band showed up that night...unfortunately, they got lost...and chose to drive down to the river. They climbed over the railing and down the brushy bank to the Wolf where, to make a long story short, Jeff waded in fully clothed and with his boots on...if you have seen the dirty dredge that is this bank, you would know why he kept his boots on. Keith said that Jeff simply started walking backwards into the water as they were talking and was soon laying on his back enjoying the coolnes of the water and singing his beloved Led Zepplin's "Whole Lotta Love". Bardges tuged by creating a wake and the simple yet devestating end result was that Jeff was a victim of undertow and suction created by the wake of these monsterous crafts. Keith called out to him then went for help when Jeff didn't resurface, his band was landing in Memphis most probably around the same time they were searching for him. His body washed up 6 days later at the foot of the musically famed Beal St...ironic or fitting, you be the judge. Coincidentally he was found after his band mates had already left Memphis, almost as if he had *spared* them the agony of his poor waterlogged being. Suicide? I think not...you don't invite your friend along if you are about to take your own life. Jeff's bandmates were arriving that very night and he was jazzed about starting the new material...plus, there were no PLANS to go to the Wolf, they ended up there because they couldn't find the place they were looking for. A hideous twist of fate...the music world, nor I will ever get over. I have no doubt that had he lived we would be speaking about him with the same reverent musical voice saved for the likes of Bob Dylan. The man was unequalled and still is...there will never be another voice, another presence that was Jeff Buckley. I can be having a nightmare of a day and slip one of the multitude of Jeff gigs/boots I own into the CD player and never fail to get sonic inspired goosebumps immediately before fits of laughter from his razor sharp wit and frolic.... What happened to Jeff Buckley? Nothing...except that his mortal coil slipped into the Wolf and away from us forever. His soul and his real body, the body of his work...are with me everyday. yeah, what a story...Jeff and Tim Buckley...I can't think of a bigger waste of incredible talent...both of them (and of course, Jeff has so much more ahead of him, having only released one full album at the time). As Bono said, Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise (so many water references in Jeff's music and even in this quote, it's not even funny). I did a multimedia presentation on him for a class a few years ago. Why I mention that, I don't know. If anyone in this forum has not checked out Jeff Buckley, you are either very stubborn or just completely daft...he was a once in a lifetime find. I just can't be too strong about this... And, yes, go get Dream Brother, the book...very well written about both men. [This message has been edited by kenmeyerjr (edited June 22, 2001).] IP: Logged |
