Has anyone ever heard Robie Robertson?

He sings alot about Native Americans and his music is really beautiful. Just curious?

Thats the point to write about any genre of music that you like or have liked/and or love(ed). Now or before.

I would have to say that I am a Music lover first before anything. Soon after I was born. OK- It's pretty close to the Trees, Sun, Wind and Rain. Yeh, they come pretty close, but Music still seems first.

"Happy Memorial Day to all".

Listen to the music,

Michele

I have heard of him, Michele, but pretty much only because he is Canadian. Actually, I think Canada does have a lot of great musical talents (can't tell that I am Canadian, eh?), but seriously, The Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jann Arden and so many more that I will not go on about, all very talented.

I love Gaelic music, although my mother complains it drives her nuts. I used to love country music, I still listen to Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks, but that is about it now.

Speaking of genre's though, what about Duncan's music? I have trouble calling it pop. I have this image of the, Britney, Christina, N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, mass produced crap, when someone says pop.

Don't forget one of the greatest bands ever -- Our Lady Peace. They're Canadian too!!!! They are one of my favourites. I saw them in concert in Austin, TX a couple of years ago when I lived in Texas. They were excellent!

Jenn - Another Canadian you should look up - Ashley MacIsaac. He is a fiddle player and takes traditional gaelic songs and ads "pop" to them - That is probably a horrible description - but if you like gaeilc music you will love this artist. He tours in Canada alot too!!

Let me know if you have heard of him.

Yeah, Our Lady Peace...didn't they do that song 'Clumsy'...?

Well, I gotta say that I'm also a big Steely Dan and Seal freak. I guess, I could tell you a lot about my favourite bands and artists from europe and japan, but I don't think anybody would know... Oh, does anybody like DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid? His music is magnificent and he's a really really nice guy, met him here in germany in Oberhausen. That's it...for now!

hey, I have all three of Robbie's solo releases (and I realize there may be more by now)...and they are all cool, atmospheric pieces of work, tho I still like the first one best (stories from Redboy is pretty good, too, if I remember the title correctly)...as for other bands...geez, don't get me started! Latest likes include Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and Mark Eitzel.

Duncan,

I was wondering if you ever heard the song "Melted", by Phil Roy and if so- what is your opinion of it?

Thanks.

"Bruce Cockburn", two of his very best are The Charity of Night and Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu. He is from Canada as well. He's great and very intelligent lyrics and sensitivity, expression in his music.

Sunday's Child- I'm into japanese music, too. But do you listen to j-pop or the traditional music? I personally love the shakuhachi and koto music, it's really relaxing and peaceful, it sounds like walking through the woods and listening to all the birds and trees swaying in the wind.

Well, when I was a child I loved Whitney Houston and The Bangles. Then, in junior high, I was into metal, Quiet Riot, Anthrax, Pantera, Guns n Roses... then in high school I was introduced to punk and I still love it, Dead Kennedys, Face to Face, MxPx, etc. Now I'm into classical music, I fell in love with Bach's music, and I love to listen to world music. I also listen a lot to music from the 80's, Journey (I LOVE Steve Perry!), Phil Collins, Erasure and Dead Or Alive, to mention just a few. And I have to mention once again, I am a Cibo Matto fan. I also collect soundtracks from movies I love, like Gladiator and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and anime like Rurouni Kenshin... I could go on... without music, no matter which kind, this world would be boring.

Oh, sorry, as far as japanese music is concerned, I'm only in that progressive electronic thing...

Artists like Ken Ishii, DJ Krush, Towa Tei or Yasuharu Konishi...

PsycheSoul, I bet you played Chrono Trigger... Just want to add my Phil Collins favourite, which is 'Take me home'.

Still nobody knows DJ Spooky?

Hey, Wishful Thinker, totally aggreeing with 'This could be heaven'... always thought this would be the first release of an new album by him... Well, first you should check out Seal's version of 'Fly like an eagle' on the Space Jam OST. Then do yourself a favour and listen to his third album 'human beings'. When you like this kind of moody, deep soul pop, believe me, when you listen to his (perfectly fitting) lyrics, the music can have a similar effect like Duncan's music has!

'You're heading for the crash, it will be here tomorrow, I even pay for gas, if you wreck us gacefully...'

That's it for now!

(edited because I forgot Phil Collins.. )

hey, blackwuzzy....Cockburn rules! I would, though, recommend either World of Wonders, Big Circumstance or Burning Light...but I have all of his stuff, and love it all. The guy is amazing, damn intelligent and passionate about his beliefs. I met him on the tour (and the Belly Up, yet again, fellow socal-ers) for, uhhhh, god, can't remember, about 4 years ago (and, in another blatant self promotion, you can see the art and signed album on my website at http://www.kenmeyerjr.com/likes/cockburn.html or http://www.kenmeyerjr.com/music/cockburn3.html (the painting I did of him).

Kenmeyerjr,

Thanks for your response to my post. You have some great pictures of Bruce there. I have seen him twice. Met him once in Philly and got his autograph. I don't know where I put the thing? Some day, I'll find it. This was before I came to love his music so much. The last time I had seen him was in New Jersey during his most recent tour, while promoting "Breakfast in New Orleans, Dinner in Timbuktu". It was a terrific, very complete show. He was Excellent.

You seem to be quite an Illustrator. Thanks for sharing this with us and your tastes in music. I love the illustration of Duncan.

Ken,

The first time I saw Duncan was in Philly at the 1998 show at TLA. I was right up front. My daughter met him personally that evening. Needless to say, the show was quite fabulous!!! He did all of "Humming".

ha, right on! Garth Brooks rules! I love Garth. Every release of his except for the one where he wasn't himself (can't remember his alter ego's name) I have. His morals...well,those are a little shaky, but I'm still a fan of his music. And I love Seal. I steal my mom's cds of his all the time. Those are different genres I like. I also like opera once in a while. And Barry White. hehe...

How can you forget it? Chris Gaines... Actually I did not even mind that CD. If we only listened to artists whose morals we approved of who would be left?

thanks, blackwuzzy, for your compliments...I never know when I step over the line promoting my artwork...don't want to go too far! (of course, the new thread I started called "My website" might be doing just that).

How old was your daughter when you took her? I took my 6 year old to meet David Gray recently on a radio station related thing (I'll have to put that pic up on my site somewhere, along with a picture of our 11 month old baby..a pic of here shoulda been up there looooong ago).

She was I believe 10---depending on the month of the concert. She will be 13.
(But I am the big music lover)......

Great site Ken. Duncan and Bruce are two of the very finest Musician's I have heard in all of my life. I have listened and studied so many.

That picture of David is excellent. I saw him last September.... in Philly right before he was more well known. I still love the B. Raitt work. (And of course your Duncan) Did you give him your only one??

Fellow Donuts,

How about Bruce Hornsby? "Harbor Lights" my favorite & the newer "Hothouse" with many well known jazz musicians sitting in.

He is a wonderful Pianist and Songwriter. Of course his style is the exact opposite of Duncan, but he is a brilliant musician. Very talented.

Has anyone here ever seen him? I've seen him three times. Once he opened for Bonnie Raitt and two times by himself. If he ever comes around go see him.

By the way, he's from South Virginia.

wuzmonster,

Well, I did give David Gray the original (but have a negative to make prints)...I always give the artist the original...he seemed a little concerned about how he would get it home, tho! (we were very lucky to go upstairs in the lounge of this recording studio to meet him, no one else got to to that, but the dj I know from the station that sponsored this little show knew I was going to do a painting...and was too late to see him perform -it's a long story).

oh, you must have missed it...I said Febuary 12th, 1957

oh by the way, wuzzy, the reason there is a kid looking thru a fence in that Gray piece is that I read an article/interview where he talked of a place he lived where he had a fence in his backyard that led to a forest he found magical..when I mentioned this to him, he just said, oh yeah we had a fence once...or something like that...I was expecting a more involved response (but I was told he had a big hangover at the time)

Ah, so many artists out there that wrock the casbah. Here are so my favorites:

David Gray - Absolutely gorgeous. You can hear the pain and emotion when he lets out that melancholy voice of his. One of the best artists out there period.

Tom Mcrae - Another extrmemly talented singer/songwriter. He's getting bigger in the UK. We just need to get him over here.

Matt Nathanson - folk rocker from the san franciso area. Great voice. mattnathanson.com

Howie Day - This kid is sure to make it big. He can't miss. A great wrocker.

And of course, you can't go wrong with such old school classics as Simon and Garfunkle, Van Morrison, and Nick Drake.

Just my two cents.

Wooooooo. I always thought that looked like an F, but now that you mentioned it- I went down and checked on my Led Zeppelin collection cd box and it appears as if it could be a s, making it Zoso. I have always known it as Zofo. (Right or wrong)

Thats something after all these years.

Are you sure??

I think we all could use a Dr. Pepper!

I love the bands Barenaked Ladies, Sister Hazel, Tonic, Semisonic, Vertical Horizon and Filter. Steven Page, the lead singer of Barenaked Ladies has one of the best voices that I have ever heard.
