Duncan,

Not only is "On A High" a fantastic song, but so was your performance on Leno last night! I dove onto the floor in front of the TV and didn't blink until the show was over. Never before have I been lucky enough to catch you on TV, so I was absolutely thrilled. You looked awesome, you sang awesome, it was absolutely awesome. Now if only you'd come back to Rochester, NY so I could watch you be awesome in person!! I can't wait for the new album!

Hi Duncan,
I think the new song is fantastic! Pop song is a great idea to reach a wider audience! When I teach yoga I sometimes play the entire Phantom Moon CD and I get a small line of people after class wanting to know what they just heard. You will definately reach out and touch more people!

Hey Duncan. It's "Sybil from Queens"- I think I was the first caller on Live at the Lounge. I just wanted to say thank you x1000 for talking to my little sister and I. You really made her year. Seriously- she just started learning the guitar and you are her hero. She's dying to learn "Mouth on Fire". She still cannot believe she talked to you. Don't worry- I'm not trying to play it cool- I was pretty psyched myself . For once, my entire family does not mind if I pop a cd into the car player (Phantom Moon). My mom cannot get enough of the first album. Thank you for that. I can't wait to hear Daylight. Well, I'll say hello again in a few weeks (I'm going away today). Thanks again from both of us!
Smiles,
Sybil and Sylvia

For anyone in the Philly suburbs area...

I've heard "On a High" on 102.5, which I believe is out of Reading. Tune in and maybe you'll get lucky.

Duncan,

Don't apologize for your music! It's a great song regardless of any labels that people might put on it. Good luck, and keep up the good work.

The new tunes are incredible. I preordered from Amazon.com so I listen to them everytime I'm on the computer! It sure has made being at the computer a wonderful experience. I can hardly wait till after the 27th so I can take the tunes with me wherever I go. What a great job. You should be very proud.

Duncan,

Just wanted to say that I loved On a High on the first listen. Sure, it was different from what I had heard from you before, but I admire that in an artist. Gotta step outside of what you and your fans are comfortable with occasionaly to keep growing as an artist.
Looking forward to you coming to the Orange County, California area again soon! I'll see ya at the Coach House!

Who cares whether it fits into our expectations or not? I didn't buy your first album based on expectations.. it just captivated me, and I bought it. I haven't heard 'on a high' yet.. but I will know it when I hear it, and I know I will love it.

We want what you choose to give us. Keep doing it as long as it makes you happy, Duncan.

Thank you for sharing.. and go read my other post at 'questions.'

I recently heard "On A High" and once again, since becoming a Duncan fan, it never ceases to amaze me. I find I can listen to any of the songs on any album and feel perfectly at ease. No matter who writes the lyrics (They're all awesome) it always sounds distinctly YOU. I'm kind of a new fan, and I'm definitely hooked
I only got to hear the new song once, but I've had it running hrough my head since I heard it. Keep up your wonderful work!

Duncan,
Congratulations on the new album. I'm sure there's more to it then meets the eye (or perhaps the ear?), regardless it's a wonderful thing to complete a new project.
And though I'm sure fans and foes alike will formulate various opinions, who knows if they'll fully understand the "context". Probably not, but at least they'll hear the music. And Art and mystery should go hand-in-hand. If you know what your music means to you, you're far ahead of most artists. Good luck to you as you bring in the new. Peace and happiness be with you, now and in all future endeavors. -D.

Why is "pop" such a dirty word in your world? Pop as short for "Popular." Just because people like your music doesn't mean that it is a lower quality or inferior. Are you saying the masses have no taste? I know when I saw you in concert; you made a disparaging comment before singing "Barely Breathing" about that you were going "pop." I think that fact you can write and sing a song that millions connect with is amazing. I have to say I had never heard Barely Breathing when I fell in love with your music. I had your second album months before I bought your first album. You should be proud of all of your songs because each is special and a piece of your soul. When you write both the words and music, then that song is from your vision alone. The blend of your voice, lyrics, and melody is amazing. I love "On a high" and have been listening to it for the last 45 minutes. I can't wait until your album comes out and you are touring. I guess to sum up my message is that you should never apologize for any of your music unless you haven't been true to yourself.

I just heard 'On A High' and it's great! It's going to take forever for Aug. 27 to get here so I can hear the rest of the album. I only hope that someday I can actually see & hear you perform live! You never disappoint!Music that makes the heart soar. Thanks for sharing your talent.

Hi Duncan - I think it's a good idea to follow Phantom Moon with this. It shows your range, and will make you some money. Pop sells. Pop is NOT a bad thing. It reminds me of the first album. You need to be on the radio to get out to more fans. This is exactly the right move for the follow up to Phantom Moon. It will be in my CD player more often!

Duncan- the new song is wonderful. I like the contrast from your last album. It's nice to hear an artist who is diverse and not afraid to explore different formats.
Keep up the great work. Can't wait to hear your new ablum. Hope your in the Boston area again soon. Your show at the House of Blues last year was a religious experience!

Duncan,

On a High rocks. A few weeks back I was at work late (in Los Angeles) and we had STAR 98.7 on the radio and they were playing their little countdown at 8:00 of the most requested songs of the day. I was half listening as I don't listen to mainstream stations and then they announce that at No.5 was a new song from Duncan Sheik. I jumped out of my chair and sat practically on top of the radio to listen. I am so excited for the new album and hope to see lots of LA DS fans waiting on line around 11:30 PM on the 26th at Tower Records on Sunset to get your new cd at midnight!

Your music makes me stop and breath and I thank you for that.

Angus

The song is nice, I don't get too much pop feel from it. I think that making a more up-beat album is a good move. Don't get me wrong, I love all of your work, but some of the song flow will make you so relaxed, you find yourself waking up the next morning. Good luck with the new CD, I know I am going to buy it as soon as it hits the stores.

"On a High" is an exellent song, I really dig the lyrics, and it has such a catchy beat, you just want to move. As for the "pop" aspect, it's no more pop then RHCP's new song "By The Way" . I am definitely going to include "Daylight" in my "CD's you'd want if you were stranded on a desert island list" a.k.a. College.

hey duncan,
please won't you try and take a holiday in sunny cape town, south africa. i know a few small, intimate venues where you can 'give your music a try' on the south african public. i'm sure you'll find once they hear you, they'll want you to 'take over the world'!

plus, we have a beautiful buddhist 'resort' (for lack of a better word) just outside the city limits in the veld. i think you'd love it. you really should try...or at least entertain the idea!

Alright Duncan, The first time I heard the new song, I was flipping through radio stations and I heard something "new" and something that sounded "Duncanish" I stopped and I literally caught that last 3 seconds of it and I knew 100% it was you. I just listened to it several times online to really "hear" it. 1st impression? Catchy tune,(that sells records..yea!) good bass line and the typically great Duncan vocals I adore! Dig it! The song may be "pretty poppy mainstream" but 1) ya gotta sell records and I know I couldnt sit still while listening.. makes ya tap your foot or bob your head. I know, dorky but hey.. why not!?

I admit that when i first heard "On A High" that I was a little.... scared i think is the word that i'm looking for, but not like in I didn't like the song kinda way not at all in fact I thought the exact opposite. My First thought was "ohh no we are gonna lose the intimate feeling of the shows cuz he's gonna blow up and make it big and he'll start playing bigger venues and it won't be the same". listen I love duncan and everything duncan sheik but i kinda felt like "my little secret" is gonna be made public and everybody is gonna know him and then it will become "trendy" (I hate that word) to like him. Look I wan't duncan to do very well and i hope he finally gets the recognition he deserves I just don't want it to affect the shows.

Thanks for letting me vent,

DC

p.s. I Love Every song on this Album. Thanks for another perfect Album.

I haven't heard your latest- but I know how your are, and I know I won't be disappointed. I have faith in you. Oh and by the way- good choice on the release date- that’s my birthday! Cool coincidence! (I know what I'll be doing that day...)

Good luck dear and I hope all is well.
Oh and get your butt on a tour bus and come to Chicago- please!
Thank you!

Hi Duncan,
The new single sounds great and I'm looking forward to devouring the rest of the album. I saw you and Jerry in Chicago at Schuba's last summer - a magical night! - and was hoping you might be playing some more small venues like that soon. There's an intimate little place here in Ann Arbor, MI called "The Ark". We'd love to see you here!
Thank you always for the joy and inspiration.

Duncan,

Your song rocks. I cant even imagine what the rest of the album sounds like.
I especially like the chorus to the song, it balances out the verses... its great!!!

I pray and hope it hits the pop scene hard- Lord knows we all need that.

Blessings,

Rob

Hi Duncan, It doesnt really matter to if your music has "pop" to it or whatever as long as I get to hear your voice! The thing is, your music is great 'cause its not like everything else playing on the stations today. You know, ya get sick of the same thing over and over again but yours is "refreshingly different".... Dont ask

AWESOME! And I can't wait for the rest of the album..or CD or whatever they call it these days.

I assume that you will probably start touring to promote the release...best of luck, and any chance you'll add Santa Cruz or Monterey to your list of venues? I hear Doc's is nice in Monterey, and The Catalyst is well The Catalyst. Alanis Morrisette kicked off her last tour there and Niel Young still hangs their occasionally.

I am new to this board and I know my little message is on the bottom of the barrel, but I have to say the new single reminds me a lot of Bite Your Tongue. it runs around in ur head with its quirky and poppy sound..I don't care what anyone says, if it gets stuck in ur head, its a good song. Yaaaaaaaayy. I am very excited like the rest of everyone for this albulm.

Hello fellow Duncan fans..and
hello Duncan!

Allow me to wax poetic for a moment...please..

I wanted to express how cool I think the new song "on a high" is! It's totally perfect in this way, I (like alot of people I'm sure)...sometimes I live my life in the state of mind that the ribbon of happiness that weaves its way thru my life isn't there. I choose in some ways to overlook it, with feelings of longing for this and that, or making excuses about why I can't have this or that "happiness" or "rock star lifestyle"... in the meanwhile, my life is happening all the while, and the fact that I'm breathing, thinking, walking, talking, I'm free!..and there should be no room for regrets!

It's all happening now, now..now!!...

The fact that you can write from every type of musical perspective Duncan, is why everyone here digs yer music so much!

Cheers!

Duncan,
I was reading through the commentaries about your new single and I was wondering if you believe everything you read. I mean.. there wasn't any real criticism that I could see. The average response was "It rocks Duncan, keep up the good work" or some cliche. I'm a musican and I would want others to be honest with me about what they thought and not compulsively clammer on with stars in their eyes. Honestly... without hearing the entire album... the single is not what I would expect from you, not even on a commercial level. Please don't misunderstand me. The single is good, but that's the extent of it.
I guess I was a bit spoiled after the Phantom Moon CD.
I understand that you don't make music just for me and I don't mean any disrepect... but I want to be honest. I feel that it's missing something. That thing that makes your songs yours.
I do want to listen to the entire album to see where you are heading.

In His Love,
Kevin

Helloooo Nivek

I know you posted your last message for Duncan to respond... and with all due respect, I'm gonna respond to it too.. cus, well, this is a message board..

I know everyone here LOVES Duncan, and if the extreme of that is expressing in words in a POSTIVE way... how much they love him, and his music, then bring it on! It's not a schmooz music convention party here, the messages here seem pretty unconditional.

I'm a musician as well, and having been on a major label, and written from both a "pop" persepective,as well as my solo stuff which is more "indie"..i believe that each artist paints their own identity into the music, lyrics.. and although Phantom Moon (musically) is Duncan beautifully all the way!...., his other albums including this new one to be released are the kind of songs that got all of us hooked on his sound in the first place!

I have a website.. (not a message board) but the feedback that I've gotten on my music for the past 4 years is one that has always been POSTIVE..and supportive. That's what fans are all about!

Maybe if you uploaded some of your music onto the net, you would get some honest feedback and support that all artists (musicians) like yourself.. need.

All the best to ya mate...
Jacqueline

Duncan, I heard "On a High" for the first time on MMUSA. I had never heard of you before honestly, but as soon as I saw this video I was hooked. I became an instant fan, your music is exactly what I am looking for, and I am so incredibly glad there is someone out there who can create music for someone as complicated as me. I can't wait until Aug. 27th!!

Hi Duncan and everyone reading along!
I am brand new to the Message Board, and I just wanted to say that I am really loving "On A High"!! It is really fitting to where my life is right now, so I find myself playing it over and over! I'm a big fan!
Actually, the first time I heard the song was when you were on Leno, and my mom and I were on vacation in Seattle. I heard the song in the background first, and after about 15 seconds I said "Is that Duncan Sheik?!" and came running to the TV to watch! I am super excited that you have a new albulm coming out, especially so soon!!

A quick question for anyone who knows (Duncan would probably know best himself, but you never know! ) : are you going to be playing acoustically at the Tower Records in La Jolla, CA?!?! That is the rumor right now, and I wanted to check before I got my hopes up too much!!

Thanks! You're an awesome musician, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the albulm!
