I'M SO DISAPPOINTED!! (hopefully the frowny face showed up or this statement won't be as effective......) Was supposed to catch the Coach House show in SJC, but our trip to LA was cancelled due to a sick son!! I was SO looking forward to seeing you AND Fisher--truly two of the few artists who really talk to me deep down (which is pretty deep for this Scorpio gal--believe me, I relate to all you sing)--this was to be my first time to see either of you! AAARRRGGGHH!!! So, HERE'S THE QUESTION I'm supposed to write: Wondering if you will EVER consider coming to Jacksonville, FL?? Pretty please (she says in her most eloquent manner........)? Hey, I'm 35 years old--I'm not afraid to beg (but nearly in disbelief that I am writing on a fan site message board at this age--next thing you know I'll be taking out old issues of Tiger Beat and my posters of Scott Baio.......)!! Would love to see you here in town (though I realized I stupidly missed you in Orlando--so shoot me)--the Florida Theater is a great venue.....I'll expect front row seats. Or a microphone on stage with you (harmony's my specialty). See? I'm easy to please. heehee. Health, harmony, peace and many kudos to you.

Hey Duncan,
Well I don't know if this will ever reach you, but it's worth a shot. I'm a twenty year old guy whose life is falling apart and I just wanted to thank you for helping me keep it some-what together. Oh wow! I just saw the clock(it's 8:44am). I feel kinda stupid writing this. I'm not the type of person to try to contact celebrities or try and pretend that I know them and that we're the best of friends. Yet here I am.
Speaking of where I am... in the physical state I'm in my cousin's basement in the dark listening to your latest album. By the way "This Is How My Heart Heard" is on right now. I think it's my favorite song on Phantom Moon. It's a beautiful album. Okay back on track. You know what, let me start over.
In March of this year I entered a drug and alcohol abuse program at the age of nineteen. I was reluctant at first, but knew I needed help, I mean I was killing myself. After about a month of meetings and so fourth I jumped completely in, but still couldn't stay sober. Our first goal is to get thirty days sober and i couldn't even do that. In the three and a half months I was there I relapsed six times. I wanted to be sober, but it was really hard. Not only that, but it was hard to deal with myself and trying to be a better person and dealing with my past and etc. It got to be too much, and after another anxiety attack and another blow-up at a meeting I freaked.
That night instead of hanging out with everybody I went home to go to bed, but of course I couldn't. I tried to distract myself, but couldn't do that eigther. So after talking to an old friend I packed up my bags and left. -I was staying with some people from the group- I left a good-bye note on my bed and went walking down the streets of Boulder,CO with my three bags. I don't know that area at all so I walked like two miles untill I found a main street that my friend could pick me up at.
I was so scared walking and everything and it was really cold and my shoulders and back hurt from carrying the bags. It was horrible. The only thing that got me through was you. I just kept singing all your songs. At first it was just to calm me down, but singing all your words really got to me. The combination of the songs I've always related to, the songs that explained where I was emotionally at that moment, and the sheer beauty of everything about you made me realize that I wanted better for myself. I wanted a beautiful life too. So before my friend got there(we were gonna move to Texas, and needless to say I wasn't planning on staying sober)I called my sponser who rushed over to get to me first.
I didn't speak one word the whole car ride. I spent the night at his house and he tried to talk to me, but I couldn't. I felt dead inside. It was really wierd, I'd never felt like that before. I think a huge part of me just knew it wouldn't be long before I actually did leave.
Sure enough the next day in my out-patient group my counsler ask if I really wanted sobriety. Basically, was I gonna stay in the program or leave. So I chose to leave. Everybody was shocked including myself, and as I was walking away I had mixed feelings about it.
I left on 06/05/01(tuesday). I found myself with nowhere to go. I had lost so many friends because of my addiction and the way I treated them. The few ones I had left I shut out when I got in the program, and know I had lost my friends I made in the program. So I had something like four friends and only one was able to help. I slept at her place, but because of me drinking again and everything else, she kicked me out the second night. After a day of being on the street I called my auntie and she took me in.
Then on 06/09/01(one of the greatest days of my life)I saw you perform at Elitch's(the Six Flags in Downtown Denver). That morning I went to my parent's house gathered up all my change and cashed it in so I could buy tickets for my friend and me. We got there real early only to get our wristbands. I swear we were the first ones to get our wristbands. Then I waited all day long not even caring about the rides and talking non-stop about you to my friend.
The concert was increadable. I had an ear to ear smile and teary eyes the whole time. I never knew someone could sound that much better live. Your albums are perfect so I really don't understand how you managed to out do yourself, but you did. Everyone knows how I am when it comes to you, and what listening to your music does to me. Hearing and seeing you live was almost too much. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack or something because me body just didn't feel like it could take it. It was such a perfect night. Thank you very much Duncan, I really needed that.
Then I was like "Lets stick around for as long as we can. Maybe we'll see him". Then they announced you would be coming out to sign autographs. I couldn't believe it. The whole day and the whole concert I imagined meeting you after, so I was so suprised it was going to happen.
When I saw you walk out I started fidgeting and saying,"Oh my God, Oh my God". Then I was next in line and I told my friend,"No, I don't think I can do this". I was so extreamly nervous. I didn't move so you had to take a step towards me. You sighned my wristband. My name is Anthony. I don't know if you remember me or not. I wanted to tell you so much that night. I wanted you to take me away from my own personal hell and let me tour with you(even though I knew that wasn't reality. During the concert it felt like you we're telling me to go back to the group or to just go after something better for myself, at least that's what I made it out to be.
Since then I've gotten kicked out of my auntie's house, gotten kicked out of my sister's house, got invited back into my parents house only to get into a arguement with my mom and got out of the car before we even had the chance to get my bags to move back in, ended up on the streets, found out the few friends I have left eigther don't want anything to do with me or aren't willing to help me out in the slightest bit.
Finally I called my cousin and have been staying with them for a week now. It's wierd though 'cause I'm not really close to them. I am now, but before I saw them like twice a year. I still don't like here though. I haven't talked to my mom or my sister or any other member of my family in a week. Nobody knows where I am, for all they know I'm dead.
Duncan I don't know what to do. I'm on the verge of tears all the time, but I won't let them out because I don't have anybody to hold me while I cry. I'm so scared. I know the answer seems easy, but it's really not. I don't know maybe it is. I just feel so empty, and it's really hard for me to go back to my family or the program. I don't know if eigther one would even take me back.
I'm back where I use to be, cheting death over and over. Only now I don't really have anybody. I just want a good life again. I want to be able to be sober(as impossible as it seems), and I want my family and friends back. Also, what I want so badly, is to be a good person. I'm tired of this. I look back at my life and I'm like, "What happened"? What happened to me. Where did I go wrong? What's wrong with ME? Why can't I ever do anything right?
Whoa, I gotta end this now. Not only am I emotionally drained, but I've taken up way too much of your time. I just want to thank you once again. You helped me and kept me alive in so many ways. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I didn't know I was gonna write this much. I know your very busy so I truely appriciate it.
You are such a great human being. I guess that's why I don't feel totaly dorky wrighting all this to someone I don't know, because I know your a beautiful person(it shows though your music and everything you do). I can only hope that one day I'll grow into being one-fourth of the man you are.

Thank you,
With all my heart,
Anthony

P.S. Could you posibly e-mail me back or post a message up? Nothing big at all just something to let me know you got it. Best of wishes to you.

i'm sorry duncan, i don't really have much of a question, i just wanted to say,
Phantom Moon KICKS ASS! i had a shitty day today (carried an injured deer off the road this am on the way to work, then returned to check on it at lunch- he had flies on him (gone). 2 deer who had been watching over scattered as i approached. then of course the usual abuse from 2 of my soon-to-be former co-workers) anyway, all i'm trying to say is your album saved my day. it's incredible. thank you. bed peace and hair peace to you. -alicia

Duncan, first let me tell you that you have seriously moved me in a way that no other artist has ever did. I probably know all of your songs backwards...

Anyway, back in February, you supposedly participated in the songmasters program in NYC on Madison Avenue. I was there, since I was writing for Teen People magazine. (I'm 19 years old). We had to leave before you came the next day since a snowstorm started!!!!! I seriously was in tears when I was going home. I can't believe I missed my chance to meet you!

DS-

I saw Moulin Rouge a couple weeks ago and that day came home and listened to Phantom Moon and it was eerie (in a good way) how the songs seemed to fit with the plot line for the movie. I was wondering if that was a coincidence? If so, have you seen it and do you agree?

For the last couple weeks I've been listening to all three of your albums and I can't get past this mood, it's kind of a romantic depression of sorts; the love messages in your songs are so beautiful and personify what is in my heart that it hurts, it makes me long for the kind of love that makes all else nothing in comparison, that is a meeting of souls, that is for the rest of my life... and then I go out and see people that are typical older married couples, they don't even look like they are more than acquaintances and it makes me afraid, I don't want to be like that- or even the ones that seem to despise each other yet they stay together and can't give a good reason why.. a life without love, or right now my dreams of such love, doesn't seem worth living, not in my mind at least.
Your music makes me hopeful and keeps my dreams vivid, but then reality comes along and saddens me.. I want to believe that dreams come true, and somewhere I do hold on to that wish, but I'm not sure any more. If only I could live in my dreams and reality were just a nighttime vision that passed with the sun rising...

I've just been thinking... too bad I can't put it more eloquently, but I suppose that is your job.

duncan,

just wanted to give you props for your work with micah green. what a beautiful and great album. i have slowly become addicted to listening to it at work all day long.

so, i guess i have a few questions:
first of all, how the hell did you meet him? have you done any work with anyone else? why didnt you have him tour with you instead of fisher; it seems to me that if he performed before you duncan fans would become micah fans en masse.

Hi Duncan. I love your music. I was wondering. I recently saw you on a VH-1 special on singer/songwriters. How did you get involved with that? And, are you planning on coming to Ohio anytime soon. I'd love to see you in concert. :-D

Just to clarify an earlier message of mine that was rather esoteric - It might be better not to try to answer all these personal posts. It appears basically impossible at this point! There are so many, why should you bother attempting it when there are other alternatives?

Perhaps setting up a section with basic informational answers based upon the most popular and repeated questions would be a thought? Music, schedule, and personality questions (i.e. Likes and Dislikes) could thus be handled generally, and then you might be able to start this thread over again, or begin a new thread for really specific and hard-to-answer questions that may not get covered. This might work, right?
Just a thought.

Hey Duncan,
whats up man? It sounds like im the only guy who listens to your music. I live in Kansas City, MO. I havn't heard n e of your new songs played on the radio at all which really sucks. Not a lot of people know who u are out here. Is there anything u can do, like send the radios out here a c.d. or sumthin? If u do some of the radiostations around here are 96.5fm,93.3fm,95.7fm,and98.1fm.
I let some of my friends listen to your c.d. and they said it was good. The problem is we cant find where to buy your 2 c.d.s
We are 17 year old kids and cant shop on the net yet, and i got the only 2coppies at the great mall of the great plaines.
So if u could send out some demos to the radio stations here id be much obliged if u could.
Thankyou much,
Pat

WOW... This thread amazes me at this point. 176 replies to this topic, and still growing!!! I have a question for you Duncan:
What on Earth are you going to do in order to respond conscientiously to all of these hopeful posts from dedicated fans??? Most of the posts are pure love, fun, and sincere curiosity, but I don't envy you the task of figuring out a response. Daunting!!!

Peace and Luck,

dear duncan,
i attended your show last night at maxwell's. you and your band were wonderful. i was the wiseacre who said my name was 'serena' when you foolishly asked the crowd, 'anyone named serena here?'
anyway, i am a voice coach and i was really impressed with how you sang. i could hear that you were a little jetlagged at the start, but you opened up and let everything happen. good training! if you ever want some tips on how to keep your voice strong when you are performing a great deal, i would be happy to meet with you. i have been singing for over 20 years and teaching for over 10, and i have some wonderful techniques that can help you keep your voice in the face of travel and overwork. i am in nyc.

thank you for sharing your music with us. you have a gift that is lovely to listen to.

sincerely,
anna

Um, Duncan--has your hair grown back yet, or did you shave it for the Navy again? Just checking. No offense, Dawlin', but you look better with a bit more up top. There will be plenty of time for the hairless look when you hit 65, okay?

Just thought I'd ask.

Also, if you come back to Houston, let us know and we'll have a toso or something just for you. If you're REALLY nice to me (and give me enough notice) I'll bake some cheddar-Dill scones that my district members absolutely love. I'm having a Toso on Saturday, and will be making them by request. Cooking is my newest contribution to Kosen Rufu--especially bringing delish treats to activities.

Message to Shutterbabe: A while back you asked about Buddhism. I don't know if anyone has answered (I'm just skimming here) but you can now buy a book called "The Buddha In Your Mirror." Duncan is not in the book, Herbie Hancock wrote the forward, but it is the Buddhism he practices. You can get it at any bookstore, or order it like I did from Amazon.com. The authors are Woody Hoschwinder, Greg Martin, and Ted Morino; the publisher is Middleway Press. That will give you a good "nuts and bolts" introduction to Buddhism. SGI doesn't hold out celebrity members as prime examples the way Scientology does, but they are mentioned because they are practitioners like everyone else.

But isn't it great that Duncan practices?

Hey--after I spoke with him at the concert in May, I told the other members who were with me that I had reached enlightenment! Well, I was kidding, but it was funny.

Anyway. . .hope that helps, and that you get a chance to read this book soon. Not a difficult read at all.

Hey Duncan, I know you probably won't read this because there are like 5 billion replies, but I figure I might as well take a long shot. I was just wondering if you could autograph this picture I have of me and you from the May 10, 2001 show you did here in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I know you probably don't have time, but I thought I might as well try. Thanks. My email is Kimmy17153@aol.com

Message to Duncan: Whatcha doing come late October? (Don't tell me masquerading as a musician.) Why do I ask? Well. . .

If you're in Houston or free to be here, we will be having our Youth & Family Culture Festival 2001 at the University of Houston Central Campus. It's tentatively scheduled for October 27th (coincidentally, the day after my birthday and 15 years of practice.) We're doing the committee thing, and I've tossed my hat into the ring to help. BUT. . .if you're free, we'd love to see you. I can put you in touch with the lady in charge of performance. If you don't want to perform, then just show up! We'd love to see you anyway.

Me? Making causes--I said I'd help with hostessing, food and organization--what I'm probably better at, especially computer stuff (just want it done correctly.) Performing? Outside of cooking demonstrations and standup comedy on the fly, I think no one would care. But YOU are another matter entirely.

Just a thought, if you can't make it, I won't be insulted. Just wanted to let you know about it, if you are interested.
I figure, all you--or your management--can do is tell me "no"!

Gracias.

Amy the Redhead

Hello Duncan - Figured you could use another question.
Really, I posted a topic in the General forum on how people might be able to help you get through this; we're all pretty understanding about the dilemma you have here, so if you're thinking "how the heck am I gonna answer all these?" -
well, relax and live your life first!

Also, I realized that I've told you to negate any question by "wolfspirit" at this point, but I do have one itsy bitsy question.

Are you still in touch with Juliet Prater?
I so enjoyed her contributions to your work, being a percussionist myself. Will she play with the band again?

I know, all you needed was another question. This one you can answer with a simple "yes" or "no" and I'll be a happy camper.
Wishing you well Duncan!
Shari.

Dear Duncan,
Hi. I am very interested in Buddhism and I am learning all that I can about it. Unfortunatly, I do not know anyone that practices Buddhism and therefore, am having a hard time getting some of my more obscure questions answered. I was wondering if you knew of a way that I could make that happen. A person to contact, an email address I can write, etc. Even if I could ask you a couple of questions, that would be wonderful.
Also, if anyone else in here knows anything that might help me, PLEASE email me and let me know! I am really very sincere about wanting to better myself through Buddhism. Thanks.

Duncan,
I first heard your music several years ago but in the last week have found myself immersed in your lyrical stories and soothing tones. I was once myself a touring musician and the effect I wished to acheive (never did in music- but found other outlets) is precisely what you execute on every song. It is so rare to find an album where each song stands on its own, has a unique voice and entertains. I am amazed by your songwriting ability and consistency. Thank you for being so open and honest in your creations...so thank you and please play a gig in NYC soon so I can see you live as I am sure its a wonderful experience...
Warm regards.

Every day I look. Every day only 7 posts still... It'll be nice when you get some R&R; and drop by a little more often to say hey.

You're quite busy at the moment, aren't you, Duncan?

Well, again my question is if and when you plan to go on tour in Germany the next time?

And, of course, if you're in Germany, would you give an untalented young local press journalist an interview for his small newspaper?

That's it for now, thank you!

In 'That Says It All' you sing "Hear you're gonna make big and rake it in with your masterplan...". Now, do those lyrics have anything to do with Noel Gallagher from Oasis? He has always been vocal about how he always wants to be big and the best. He also says that his biggest accomplishment musically is his song "the masterplan". Just a question from a fan of both artists stated who has too much time on his hands

Yes, I'm sure it will be six pages soon. Geez!

Hey, Duncan, I bet that you didn't think that so many people had a question for you when you wrote that message!

If you want help with the questions, I'm sure people on this board, including me, will be happy to help!

Carly

Hi Duncan,

I bought your Phantom Moon cd in Europe and I was wondering why the cover is different from the US version.
Thanks,

Sebastian

Dear Duncan,
Hi, I just found out about your website. I was reading the credits in Humming one day and there it was. If I had known that you had a website, I would have been here sooner. And I think that it is amazing that you take time out to write to your fans. I just wanted to let you know that you are an inspiration to me and your music is beautiful and touching. I have been a fan from the start and I absolutly love your new album. I hope there is many more to come. Thank you so much for your music and wonderful lyrics.
Always,
Heather

Dear Duncan,

Out of all the songs you have written, which is your favorite and why? Do you enjoy writing the music or lyrics more?

Thanks,
Rhonda,RN,BSN

Duncan,
I know that you read and reply to so many of us. And you must get tired of it every once in a while. So here is a statement and question all in one. Your music makes my hectic life so much more calming. It is truly a comfort to hear your voice and music just blot out everything for those moments. And I think of your music as poetry often. My question is do you write just poetry? Often Perhaps? And if so, do you ever plan on publishing them in just the written form? I hope so. You are a incredably talented soul.
Thanks
Nicole
PS- if you ever consider playing in Albuquerque, NM (I hope, I hope) I know some poeple who would be truly greatful...

Hey Duncan,

I was just wondering how you got to know Jeff Buckley and what kind of influence he had on you? You two are my favorite artists and you have different approaches to the same scheme...musical bliss. Thank you for making music enjoyable throughout the whole "Pop" revival that has piggy-backed
the whole TRL teeny-bop shallowness (sorry if anyone is into that stuff-but Jeff and Duncan have related to me more than Justin Timberlake;just my opinion and does not reflect the rest of you Mystery White People out there or Mystery INSERT YOUR SKIN COLOR HERE AND GENDER HERE. I praddle on yet again. Duncan keep up the good work.
