I really don't intend to offend anyone and for that matter, Duncan but I don't know if anyone noticed that there's never been a girlfriend publically announced or in pictures. He also seems to be a very delicated man. I don't know if this happend in other places but when he performed in L.A there seemed to be a lot of people from the gay community, I know that doesn't mean anything, but it makes me wonder. I'm pretty sure that the gay community would be happy that he was, and I could understand why since he's a cute guy eventhough I'm not gay. Again I stress that I do not mean to offend anybody and I'm sorry if I have. But I'm just very curious. IP: Logged |

Hey Joe, As far as we all know, he is not gay. He has a girlfriend at the present time. Even though he keeps his personal life behind closed doors, fan's know he's had girlfriends throughout his life. If you follow some of the posts in the message board you will find links to fan web-sites that contain interviewes and articles that would give you an idea of what kind of person he is. whether duncan is gay or straight is not something anyone is likely to ever really know except duncan. as i am sure we would all agree, it doesn't matter, his music is what matters. BUT of course it is human nature to be curious about others. and not just celebrities, i know i have been involved in these convos about regular joe schmoes. also, IF duncan was gay its not like our society has grown enough in its acceptance of the gay community to accept a romantic singer/songwriter as a gay man talking about his male partners. therefore, duncan would have to keep it on the down low in order to be sucessful and its the AMERICAN PUBLIC'S fault. hopefully at some point (i am sure i will be DEAD by then) homosexuality will be as normal as heterosexuality and no one will think twice of it. as for nothing being public about a girlfriend or pics or whatever, good for duncan. its hard to keep your privacy in a public profession. i have always told my husband if his band makes it big that i am to be referred to as his wife, no name, no pictures, no nothing. i want to be able to go to pottery barn or whatever and not have to worry about it. there's something to be said about anonymity! p.s. by the way, i am NOT offended by the question, just felt like getting on my soap box! You know the rule: gay or taken. But for now, since Duncan claims to have someone, I guess we can assume that he's the "taken" part of the equation... *hehe*IP: Logged |

Let's hope for those of us girls with a crush on Duncan that that is the case Grabrielle, lol. I had a romantic dream with Duncan in it the other night and he wasnt gay. I dont care what he is either way, but his songs do mention women, "she's wearing a t shirt of my favorite band", "Serena", and many others mentioning women. I think he is really just a sensitive guy and that doesnt mean he is gay. I like him either way. His girlfriend must be very lucky to have such a talented person in her life. If he was my boyfriend/husband, I would ask him to sing to me andplay for me all the time, lol. IP: Logged |

I have always felt like Duncan is just the coolest guy. I've had absolute fits over him since way back when in '97. He seems to be really warm, genuine and bright, and he's hot too! I do believe Duncan is gay, and it's really cool to see that the people here are finding it totally irrelevant as to the answer being yes or no. It is disenchanting to know that most people see only with their eyes and not with their hearts. For only the heart gives us an opportunity to experience unconditional love.IP: Logged |

You really think he is gay? Just b/c he is all those things you said? I really dont think so. I could see that he could go both ways, but his songs are about women, and other posts have mentioned past girlfriends, etc. I know people who seem like they would be gay, but they arent. Not that it matters, I stress. I just think he is very soft spoken and a sweet guy, especially since he was raised by his mother right(?) and spent a lot of time with his grandmother. He is an intellectual I would think and sometimes they arent so macho. I like Duncan the way he is. I dont like real macho guys. Any guy who has a beautiful voice who can sing me songs I would take anyday, lol. However, I am already taken and married and my hubby cant do that, lol. Oh yeah, and what about his comment on Tori Amos? He liked how sexy she was with the piano and I could tell in his voice and the way his mannerisms were when he said what he said that he was being truthful. Just a note: I'm a gay man and I find Tori Amos and her piano bench *very* sexy. That's all I'm going to say about that! IP: Logged |

I'll second that. I'm a gay man too and Tori is one of my favorite artists. I went to one of her shows last year and I have to say, she has some of the best legs I've ever seen in my life. IP: Logged |

I'll also voice the "I'm a gay man and love Tori" thing My personal opinion, as well as that of my boyfriend, dad, friend, and others, is that Duncan is something other than hetero... frankly, it doesn't really matter to me...I guess it'd be cool, in a way, if he was gay, b/c he'd be a hell of a gay icon. But whatever he is, I hope he is safe and happy. IP: Logged |

St8 or gay..just being in Duncan's immediate presence for 15 minutes tells you that is a man glowing with life. He just puts you at ease and makes you feel peaceful with is demeanor. I dont know anybody (hetro/homosexual) who eminates that goodness. IP: Logged |

I swore I wouldn't add to this topic but I can't resist any longer. Who are we to debate his sexuality? Guys, he's a human being and he should be allowed to live his life the way he wants to without hundreds of nosey people wasting hours of their lives debate his choices and preferences. That equality soapbox talk having been said, I vote that he's straight because otherwise my naughty little imagination would be without as much material. Well, for anyone who was at the last show in Annapolis, MD last Spring I could have sworn that it was Duncan's Coming Out Show. There were just so many references that night and the way he acted the whole evening. But that's very cool either way. IP: Logged |

I agree Nutrishous, but it is human nature I feel to be nosey, especially about someone you like. I also agree with you about him being straight so I can continue to enjoy my little crush on him and my occasional sweet and romantic dreams about him, lol. Hey, I'm married. Shhh. Dont tell. :P IP: Logged |

I really don't see how putting it out there - is he or isn't he??? - so off-color. I mean there are some people here who can go on for days discussing what they think DS' favorite flippin' breakfast cereal is. Why should his sexual orientation be any different? And, if anyone here things that by acknowledging that big 'ol pink elephant in the room is disrespectful, don't you think you could be making too much of this? None of us would even had registered on this site if we didn't find the man fantastic for one reason or another, so the "love him for who he is" is a moot point. The man sings haunting love songs - why should chatting about the substance behind them be so terribly wrong? I don't see anyone here admiring him any less for being either gay or straight. Gay or not, his music is amazing to me. I have not been able to stop listening to him for months now. I met him at the St. Louis show and he was so very cool, sweet and very talented. I was nervous but he has a very calming way about him and I was able to talk to him and ask him questions. If he is gay I want to marry him. He is such a doll. To me though it's more fun to wonder than it is to know everything. His songs seem to be about women. I wish some of his writing would be a little more ambiguous but who am I to say. I hope he keeps writing and singing these wonderful haunting songs. I love you Duncan! IP: Logged |

It's pretty obvious that this posted topic will be up here in the forum for awhile, seeing how it pertains to sexuality (a subject that everyone - gay or straight - seems to take an interest to), so I may as well put my two cents in. Yes, I've kinda wondered, too. For the longest time, it seems that many of my favorite artists are either gay or just plain overly sensitive (Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Robert Smith of the Cure, Duncan, Matthew Sweet, Johnny and Robby of the Goo Goo Dolls, the guys of Travis, etc). As we all have been indirectly taught, male over-sensitivity often borders on femininity. However, as a heterosexual, I still proudly embrace each of the above-mentioned artists, although several of them (Duncan included) aren't exactly a hit with my guy friends (most of whom are too much into the likes of Eminem & Nickelback to pay a nevermind to true art). Do I care whether Duncan is gay or not? Abso-friggin'-lutely not. As long as he forever continues on with his beautiful music (that is, until his fingers get too withered and old to pluck a guitar), he can be as gay (or as straight, in which my own opinion he is) as he wants to be. ----------------------- Matthew M. I love this topic. Nobody knows whether to speak their mind or shut up... It's hilarious. It's human nature to wonder about someone you adore, because on some level, everyone wants him to be something of their own, don't you think? Of course, I'm a straight chick, and in my wildest fantasies of fantasies, I'd hope he was straight. But they're just fantasies, so I guess his orientation doesn't REALLY matter. I think if he's straight, cool for him, and if he's gay, he shouldn't feel pressured into keeping his life a secret and using the word "she" in his music when he really wants to say "he".... If he were gay, I'd just nod and laugh and think... "Yep, the same as every other adorable boy I seem to collect..." Hell, since I'm so attracted to him, he probably IS gay, since I'm known for my love of gay men... But then again... I also love Trent Reznor... *lol* (WAIT! Maybe that explains why Trent isn't yet married?!) *hehe* IP: Logged |

it is my opinion that 'gay' men wouldn't be able to write and sing a song about their male lover because the general public wouldn't be able to handle it, hence, the musican would HAVE to use the female adjetive or pronoun for the simple reason of trying to sell records. see post earlier IP: Logged |

What about Rufus Wainwright? he is very openly gay and his songs are obviously about men. And I think he is pretty well liked. He is certainly the critic's baby. He isnt making a bajillion dollars. But he isnt doing too shabby either. And hands off Trent Reznor. [This message has been edited by Springroz (edited October 13, 2002).] IP: Logged |

I dont think trent is gay. It was a joke i believe. Rufus is known. I know many people on the board are fans. He was played on mtv for a while. But then that boyband thing kicked off. Both his albums are critically aclaimed. He got a lot of good press and a lot of video play for doing the I Am Sam sdtrk by covering "Across the Universe" [This message has been edited by Springroz (edited October 13, 2002).] IP: Logged |

ah, thanks for the info. the songs rufus sings, are they openly about other men? only asking because it seems to me that even the greats, like elton john, etc, can't get away with writing/singing openly about another man. and if he does, than great for him. just my small view, this is one subject i would love to be proven wrong. A bit off the subject... ...I may be alone on this (and I do believe I'll get some flak for this comment), but I think Rufus' cover version of 'Across the Universe' is so bland and annoying. His voice on that track (one of my favorite Beatles songs) literally makes my skin crawl. Stick with either the original or Fiona Apple's superb take on it (matches the original in my opinion) --------------------- Matthew M. "...Nothing's gonna change my world..." Rufus and Fiona can sing... but here they both fail on this cover of 'Across The Universe. Fiona lost her touch, as Rufus is getting better. If you want to hear the best cover of the song, buy David Bowie's 1975 clasic album 'Young Americans' John Lennon himself plays on the track and co-wrote/plays on the #1 hit "Fame'. You really can't get better than that. Suede does a great cover of the song as well, but the track is really hard to find and poorly recorded. In a way it makes the cover all that much better.... I WAS going to bring up Rufus. Yes it's true about his lyrics. It didn't even notice that at first. I was a fan for a little bit before I figured it out. Regardless of his preference I think he is hot as hell, I mean with those sideburns What I am wondering is how this whole thing got started? Like what made some of you start thinking that Duncan was gay... I am just wondering because someone in my family asked me this very question because they said that his voice, in an interview, "sounded gay". Go figure. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I might be wrong, but Duncan Sheik seems like an artist that chooses his projects very carefully. His lyrics show that same attention to detail. So it's not too far of a stretch to assume that he would be unwilling to change the pronoun "he" to "she" in order to accommodate record sales. That would make his music terribly dishonest. I think we can all agree that his music is beautifully honest. IP: Logged |

i'm glad someone brought up fiona's cover of "across the universe," because i happen to really dig that one as well. what's up with her these days? did she move back to NYC after breaking up with pt anderson or did she stay in LA?? i love her. haven't heard the rufus cover, but sounds like i needn't bother. anyways, i guess if i'm gonna try to stay on topic for this thread, yeah, what is up with thinking he's gay just because he's soft-spoken, well-mannered, and can dress himself? good grief.... ha ha--i thought his comments in that "nylon" article were hilarious, especially the one where he cites enrique iglesias for looking like "an idiot." go duncan...! Sorry to break everyone hearts (mine included) but Duncan apprently has a girlfriend. He says as much in an interview on lycos as recently as the end of August. So while I know some of us are clinging to the hope that they've broken up in the meantime, I think that puts this discussion to rest, at least temporarily. http://clubs.lycos.com/live/Events/Transcripts/duncan_sheik.asp Duncan mentions his girlfriend towards the end of the Q&A; session so scroll towards the bottom for it. They do an awful job transcribing. ------------------ IP: Logged |
