Ok, so this is a little different than Duncan's version...I'm really nervous about posting it b/c...well, I'm just nervous as a performer in general. lol. In any event, this is me on the piano (my piano needs to be tuned, obviously) and vocals, recorded by my laptop mic, transfered to .mp3 format over to my destop. It's about 4 and a half mins long and is probably "in the style of Tori Amos." ...part of the intro is intentionally taken from "Icicle" Oh yeah, I tried very hard to nail the "high notes", but a couple at the end are just a little bit lower than should be.

Feedback is welcomed, though if you're gonna be harsh...don't be too harsh.

Edit: link coming soon...gimme till around 7 PM EST

Awww. *pouts*

Well, it won't download for me, it won't save as an mp3 file at all. I really wish I could hear it though... is there anything I can do to hear it? I'm sure you made it a respectable performance... and "Start Again" is one of my favorites.

Wow... I loved this.

You have a very sweet and soothing voice, and excellent piano playing talent as well. I am a piano player, yet I must say you have some great skill to be able to master the music as well as you did, so harmoniously.

There wasn't one note off-key- if not a more mellowed out sound to this song... very well done.
I'm sure Duncan would be in admiration of this.

I know I enjoyed hearing it...

You did pretty good....however, there were a few things that annoyed me while listening:

-You seemed to start and briefly stop as you play, especially toward the end of the song. Playing the piano is tough and sometimes not very fun (I took lessons for over half my life and I STILL can't play music proficiently without sheet music in front of me). Possibly, writing down the music (if you haven't done so already) helps. However, you have very good melodic understanding from what I heard.

-The intro into the first verse was very impressive. I'm not a big fan of "Start Again" (see my personal thoughts on Daylight about that) but it actually improved the song in my eyes. The whole arrangement made the song better to me.

-Your singing didn't seem very clear or distinct from what I heard. I couldn't hear what you were singing at first, probably because of the mic, etc. Although you did sound like Ben Folds though...

Realize that all this is my opinion and I'm possibly wrong.

Keeping in mind that Andrew does have his own opinion and respecting that, I'd like to politely point out a few of my own opinions, regarding some of his critique.

First off, the piano is an art-form. It is a powerful instrument, and the pianist posesses that same power. I find beauty in variation, as I'm sure many will agree. Slowing down, alternating paces, using different strengths and tempos are all parts of what makes a piece unique. Likewise, a pause or rest in a piece offers that same variation. It can change the mood and the feeling of the song.

I think the rests were creatively placed in the song and seemed to belong, considering the slower tempo and more peaceful vocal tone. They were effective in creating the unique feeling to the sound that sets it apart from Sheik's version musically, which is impressive. It is recognizably, "Start Again", yet very different from the actual song when compared.

As for the singing, I had no problem understanding the lyrics or anything. For one, I know the song very well, although you definitely sang the song in a way that held the words out for much longer, and tended to have a more gentle approach vocally overall, which isn't a bad thing.

Anyway, that's my take on it. I hope this helps you!

thanks to both of ya for the feedback. To Andrew, I'm pretty sure that the two stoppages you are referring to are in the chorus's...they were mini-brain farts to be honest. lol. i tried to cover them up as well as much as possible As for the singing into the mic at first... I think that my voice had to kind of work its way into the song and get confidence...The version I posted was my "last take", as I had tried on multiple occasions to get a suitable recording, so there was definitely pressure for me to "nail it." But yeah, thanks to both of you for the feedback/commentary...it helps me grow a person/musician

I actually hadn't yet seen your 2nd reply Ellie... As for the variations, I totally agree w/ the tempo thing..Tori Amos can be very effective in how she mixes up tempos, for example And yeah, I definitely tried to elongate the sounds in general, so that it would have a more soothing sound to it...I wanted it to sound more like a lullaybe to be honest, than the uptempo rock-out that Duncan made it (and quite well I might add!) I think that if i ever officially recorded it for a cd or something that I would probably have to drop it a couple of keys...its so close to being in my vocal range - its probably right there at the top

in any event, i'm glad that my stuff is getting out there

I also have the two tori amos songs for people to download if they so desire
