Since my last post, "Release Day Confessions" brought some interesting stories, I thought of another question that will hopefully bring some colorful answers.

This time around I want to know what your some of your music purchase gambles have been. What I'm looking for is that album you bought on a whim, not knowing for sure whether it would be any good or not, yet you gave it a try anway. Tell us of both your successes and your disappointments please. (I'm not really getting at one-hit-wonders here, but I suppose you could list one if you can't think of something better.)

Oh, and try not to list too many, I know its hard but do your best.

Okay, I'll go first again.

Successes:
1. Train - Drops of Jupiter
What can I say, I fell in love with the title track long before it hit the radio and have been in love with Train since. (Also, they're the best live act I've ever seen, they sound unreal.

2. Semisonic - Feeling Stangely Fine
I bought this b/c of "Closing Time" and they quickly became my favorite band.

3. Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen
Yep, you guessed it, I bought it for "Brick." I was soon intoxicated with their unique sound. Too bad they broke up.

4. Save Ferris - Modified
I won't say too much here, but if you haven't heard of them, you should check 'em out. Their first CD, It Means Everything, is even better.

5. Duncan Sheik - Self Titled
What else do I need to say?

Disappointments:
1. Rubyhorse - Rise
I bought this CD this week. "Sparkle" is great but none of the other songs captured me. Maybe I just need another chance to warm up to it, I don't know.

Well that went way longer than I planned so I'll leave it at that.

This is hard for me because the music store I go to around here lets you preview cd's before you buy them but many times I am just too lazy to do that ( or too much in a rush is more like it). Anyway.....

Successes:
1. Rufus Wainwright- Poses
Yeah I know... I love him and that album, but at the time it came out I wasn't sure what the cd was going to be like.

2. John Mayer_ Room for squares
I had only heard the one single a few times, and wasn't impressed yet. But as it turns out I love him now.

3. Nick Drake- Pink Moon
It was a long while ago and I was younger and some had mentioned Nick Drake and Duncan in the same sentance so I went out and got it and love it.

Dissapointments:

1. Collective Soul- Blender
I thought it was going to be more like their other stuff and I thought it wasn't.

I admit I am pretty willing to take the risk for most CD's if someone else tells me they are good I will pick them up sound unheard...

Worth the Gamble:

Duncan Sheik - Self Titled

John Mayer - Room for Squares

Weeping Tile - Valentino

Dada (thank you Ken)

A risk not worth taking:

Dave Matthews Band - I dislike the CD so much I do not even know the name of it...

Success:

Jude- No One is Really Beautiful
Thanks to one of the Duncan lists I am on, I decided to get the cd. I had heard him on the City of Angels soundtrack and really liked the song. I'm so glad I picked up the cd.

Jeff Buckley- Grace
This was thanks to you all on the boards that I picked it up. Now I'm totally hooked. I even have a Jeff poster for my room. It's huge and fabulous and everyone asks who it is. hehe.

3EB- Thought Steven Jenkins had a good voice, was pleased the cd was great.

Jack Johnson- Brushfire Fairytales
Liked Flake, decided what the heck, the cd is on sale and got it. I really enjoy it too.

John Mayer- Heard the song on the radio a lot last fall at school, decided to get the cd. Love it. Have seen him in concert twice.

Pete Yorn- Musicforthemorningafter

He was opening for Train and Matchbox 20 last fall when I saw them in Denver. I was really upset I missed his performance. I heard it as I was walking to the venue because we were a little late. I bought the cd because that was the only Pete thing they had on sale. Was really impressed with the cd and can't wait until the new one comes out.

Rufus Wainwright- Another suggestion from the boards. So glad I picked up on him. I love him to death...now if only I could see him in concert. Poses was just a great cd as the first. I think I actually like it better. Now I have my sister hooked on Rufus as well. How's that for promotion.

Travis- um...can't think of the name of the cd. The one with Driftwood and Turn and the Rain song. My friend was really into them and suggested I get the cd. I found it on sale, got it and am so glad I did. This is really the same story as when I got the Coldplay cd.

I can't think of any failures at the moment.
