The only part of the song I sort of don't like is when he's singing "I'm on a high, on a high".....i just picture some dumb blonde bopping her head while driving down the coastal highway in her little black VW Cabrio that daddy bought for her on her 16th birthday....does anyone else get that impression? As for the rest of the song, I think it's pretty rad. IP: Logged |

Have to get used to it but the one part I can't stand at the moment is the intro. ???? I don't like it much. Anyways, I guess I'm kind of maybe more neutral now than I was before. Aquagirl IP: Logged |

That is really sad. I'm so dissapointed. What a ridiculous song. Sounds like a first attempt at writing a song. hmmm...seems like so many people's "great one" has fallen from grace. interesting. the song is just plain ridiculous. on a high one too many times for my taste. whoever said they pictured a dumb blonde bobbing their head to this while driving on a highway in a volkswagen hit the nail on the head. What is this? And I may add that dumb blonde will be too busy bobbing her "high" little head to realize she just rear ended someone... IP: Logged |

OK.... you have to all agree that it is a departure from Duncan's other works. But when you come into a project like this you can't have any expectations... or you might get disappointed. I tried to look at it as just a song, like as a song by itself. I really like it. Once in a while I actully will listen to upbeat music, so it's not completely out of my musical repertoire. I kind of actually like how it is a bit different than Duncan's other stuff. I love how it's ... how it is. Crystal ~~~~++++~~~~ IP: Logged |

It is CATCHY (can't seem to get it out of my head). And Duncan's singing will always be sexy to me... but this song doesn't make me feel, while his old tunes do... (I was kinda hoping for something like David Gray's beaty, touchy-feely guitar song Babylon... so i do have a preconception problem)

Personally, I like the song. I don't understand why it is expected that everything that he writes should be earth shattering and profound. Why can't Duncan have some fun???? It isnt any more ridiculous than "Soak Up the Sun". There has been so much seriousness and tension in the world that we need some fun. As for the "great one" falling from grace..... I have no idea what you could even mean by that. Duncan has not fallen from grace in any way, shape, or form in my opinion. He has shown from all his work that he is talented. So again, I love the new song. IP: Logged |

I really like song...it's very different for him, but I can't seem to get it out of my head. Everywhere I go I am constantly singing. So as far as a rating...I love it!; it's a step in a different direction, but a good one at that. IP: Logged |

I like it. Like I said under another topic, I think it's cute. Yes, I was one of the first with doubts before I heard it. But whoever said he deserves to have a little fun, I agree with you. Have faith in him! He hasn't fallen from grace. He's a smart man and he knows what he's doing. My cynicism is gone- it's just plain unhealthy. Let's wait around for the full album and then see. I actually like "On A High," although I asked myself "What the fuck is Duncan doing?" when I heard the song's beginning. However, as the song progressed, it grew on me. I won't say I'm in love with the song, but I definitely like it. My favorite bit is towards the end, when Duncan is singing, "Ohhhhhhhhhhh." Perhaps I'm wrong, but I feel that part is a slight variation of the end hookline from "Far Away," which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. Richard IP: Logged |

I love it! I must admit it's a bit different from what he has done before, but all in all I think it's great. It's a good thing I like it because I can't seem to stop singing it (for once I have a good song stuck in my head ![]() OH and to the one who said - "seems like so many people's "great one" has fallen from grace" - All I can say to that is... I think the song is amazing! =) It sounds very Depche Mode-ish. Even though it is very different from the Duncan that we know and love, we're just begining to see a whole new side of him. Let him have some fun making pop music. Anyway, it's about time he starts getting some recognition. IP: Logged |

This is a pop song. This is a song Atlantic CAN push and SHOULD push. He gave THEM what THEY WANT. It's gotta a dance beat and after you listen to it about ten times you can pick up more of the words, you start tapping your toes and it will make you feel good. I think a mix of both up beat and mellow songs will be a good idea. I like some of the songs on Phantom Moon but it is too dark to listen to all the time. I hope "Daylight" will be a feel good album, we need more of that right now. IP: Logged |

I think it's a pretty good song. But the intro sounds kind of goofy to me, it's kinda 80's. The rest is good. IP: Logged |

After listening to the song a bit more, I happily declare that it's won me over. Love it. I especially love the trippy little electronic stuff it has going on towards the end. I'm sure On A High will be a huge radio hit for Duncan. And I look forward to seeing him rock out on stage. IP: Logged |

He did it. This should get him the numbers he needs. I'm just so happy for you Duncan. ![]() Well worth the wait. IP: Logged |

I really like the new song, it reminds me of "Now Or Never." Granted, both of those songs are more "pop-y" than we are used to. But, I think that the new song is an example of an artist trying something new and finding success with it (a la Radiohead). It doesn't seem to be change for the sake of change, it seems to be change because Duncan thought it was a cool song . . . and I agree. Rock on Duncan! IP: Logged |

Ok, so it took me 3 times to get to a kinda-dig-it place. Now, after my 20th play, I'm indeed likin' it, on the verge of lovin' it, that's for sure. The chours is catchy as all hell. That, without a doubt, I love. Overall, it's a solid pop song. Solid with a capital S. Yeaaaaaah. I think the first thing that threw me off was the title, and the fact that he said it at the begining of the song. I kinda cringed at that part actually. But, his smart lyrics and killer chours did it for me, like it always does. Rock with your bad self, Duncan! IP: Logged |

...speaking of "Now or Never" How good was that song?!! What did you guys think of it? I don't know how many times I played it when I got the soundtrack. I just think his voice sounds so rich and full on that track. I listened to for the first time in *months* and almost forgot how incredibly gorgeous it is. I wonder if that could've made it as a single if they pushed it? Hmmm. Come to think of it, maybe they wouldn't have wanted to because he didn't write it. I think that point surfaced in another group years ago. Sleepily, IP: Logged |

In my mind, the fact that Duncan didn't write "Now or Never" only played a partial role in any decision not to release the song as a single. I still remember Natalie Imbruglia getting a lot of flack for not writing "Torn," which was the only "money song" on her "Left of the Middle" CD. Sadly for her during that period, the CD's minor hit, "Wishing I Was There," was also written by someone else. Duncan may have received some flack, but that's something we'll never know. Furthermore, I think it may have been a business move on Atlantic's part not to release "Now or Never" as a single. It was Ark 21 Records (one of the recording arms of the Copeland Group), not Atlantic, that released the "Boys and Girls Soundtrack" and "Now or Never." Of course, Atlantic could have released "Now or Never" as a single, but what would've happened if the song became a hit? Atlantic would have been making some money through CD sings and other means, but since people would be buying the soundtrack as well, Ark 21 probably would've made more money. It would be weird seeing Duncan, an Atlantic recording artist, making Ark 21 Records a bunch of money. Obviously, us fans would be happy that Duncan had another hit, but Atlantic record executives probably would've been kicking themselves in the rear. In the end, there may have been other reasons why "Now or Never" was never pushed as a single. It could've been because Duncan didn't write the song or a business decision which prevented "Now or Never" from reaching the radio. Or, the song may never have been considered as a single to begin with. Its hard to say. Richard IP: Logged |

I agree with oobleck. I'm not too fond of this song but then I realize, everyone is allowed a fluke here and there and life goes on. Marketing it could be a problem in my opinion but hey, you never know. Aquagirl IP: Logged |

cool, daddio...I like it. It's different, and just like Phantom Moon was a departure from what we might call the norm, so is this. I like both departures we have heard. I also enjoy new music. I don't love it, but I like it a lot. I'm curious now what everything else will sound like.-steph IP: Logged |

I like it...I like it a lot...ummm...ok...I love it! I've been trying to be completely objective about it, but being a big fan, there is a limit. I like this side of his music as well as the other. In any case, I think this is a great light pop single, especially for the summer. Can't wait for the CD to come out! IP: Logged |

Alright! New Duncan music! It's different, but unmistakably Duncan. Thumbs up! For me, there are a handful of artists where I'll buy anything they release: Emm Gryner, Sarah McLachlan, Trent Reznor, Maynard James Keenan, Morrissey, Robert Smith, Duncan, and others I can't think of right now. I hope 'Daylight' takes off and brings him much commerical success, but I'm sure we as fans are just happy Duncan's coming out with another album. It comes out in August, right? I can't wait!! Thumbs up to Duncan. It's great to hear a new song, a new song which I dig. Yeah, it is different, upbeat, poppy even but I am not disappointed as some people are. Evolution is an artist's process and takes an artist everywhere for many reasons. Duncan took a big chance in the industry with "Phantom Moon" and now he has taken a big chance with his hard-core fans by changing his sound a little (though the words are still his, right?). The song makes me feel good. Some of Duncan's stuff has helped my brood, this helps raise my mood. Anyway, I'll hop off my soapbox and into bed now. I just hope fans remember that being a fan and loving the artist doesn't mean you have to love everything they do. As an audience he won't insult us. Just give the words another listen. -Rabiah IP: Logged |

I think the new single is good. it's poppy, it's happening, and I think the lyrics are clever. duncan - I must say kudos on the song. I like it. I say, keep on doing what you want to do. be REAL! right on! all - I don't think the song is a departure from the norm, because WHAT, after all, is the NORM?? I'm just glad the man is making some music that we enjoy.... plus - if he didn't want to make this "kind" of song, I don't think he would have finished it - because everyone knows that this song - as the first single to be released - will be the one he has to play the most in concert.... surely he wouldn't have chosen/written a song that is overly commercial and disgusts him, or that he'll get sick of.... well, I dunno...that's just my two cents.... I must go back to bopping my head up and down to this catchy tune. [This message has been edited by rochelle (edited July 11, 2002).] IP: Logged |

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I really like this song and I think Duncan's doing some great stuff. When I first heard it, I thought "Wow, this is really unlike him" and then I realized what a ridiculous notion that is when discussing such a versatile artist. My favorite band of all time is They Might Be Giants, who have only put out two records that sound alike. Part of the reason I like them so much is that they are constantly re-inventing themselves. With these new songs Duncan is creating, he's giving the vulgus (look it up) what they want in a radio single, but he's still bringing his excellent craftsmanship to the song as well as his great vocals. "On a High" has enough punch to get it played on the radio, as well as a good deal of aspects which make it a genuinely good song. If all popular music was more like "On a High" maybe I'd actually be able to stomach watching MTV or listening to the radio for more than five minutes. More power to you, Mister Sheik! IP: Logged |
