Hi my name is ben, um... i have never entered into one of these posts before but i am absolutely in love with Duncans first album...But one night listening to the song " reasons for living" i started thinking to myself of what duncan was trying to say by that...its one of the most true and inspiring poems i have ever read, (and i never liked poetry), in my life and i just cant find the words to describe how much it reminds me of the real world we live in and the constant rhythm humans and all creatures go through... anyways if anyone feels the same way..talk to me

You're absolutely right Ben...I think it's pretty much the reason we are all here at this board and are such big fans of Duncan...he writes words that are real and that anyone can see themselves in. There are many Duncan songs that come so close to home and are so realistic to me. I noticed that from day one and I have been hooked since. Welcome to the board

Well, I think this song is about finding reasons to be alive, because it's a very sad song: "you say you are happy / you think this is fun / well it's only a firefly to the light of the sun" But most of the song is really enigmatic, I guess only Duncan himself knows what it means. And it has some gay themes in it, very hidden: "we're raiding the closets with skeleton keys" I think he could be saying the coming-out-of-the-closet is always the same, that's why "skeleton keys".
But those are only speculations

I always thought the "Skeleton Keys" line was a clever pun. The expression "to have skeletons in your closet" means to have secrets in your past that you would prefer not to have uncovered.

So letting the skeletons out of one's closet would mean coming to terms with their past. If you had a closet full of skeletons, wouldn't you think of opening it with a skeleton key?

Not all closets speak of homosexuality; sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Some interesting thoughts. I don't really like this song, but I think there are many meanings one can derive from it, as with any song. Interpretation is different for most people. I'll thinnk about this and get back to ya.
Welcome to the board, both of you.

These songs are so true to the bone that I sometimes get the chills just listening to the words. You have to really be able to see life clearly to be able to write like this.

That is The Beauty of Duncan.
much love,BW
