Hi CaptHowdy, welcome to the boards. (btw, that is an interesting screenname you have at AOL)
ah, I like those lines as well. Some others I like (not including the ones on Phantom Moon because those aren't his lyrics ):
"IN the wildest mythology/were the gods and goddesses ever so in love" (Days Go By)
"I'm here by myself, but I know I'm not alone" (Home)
"As long as there's no witness/ how can there be a crime" (Varying Degrees of Con-Artistry)
"I am the snake that bites his own tail" (Nothing Special)
"No matter what we get/We never find our happiness/ Ain't that a crime?/ Maybe that's why I've been told/ Since I was six years old, to compromise" (oh that's got to be my favorite...from That Says It All)

There are so many meaningful lines... one that comes right to mind, those, is, "None of it does compare to her eyes" from Out of Order. It says so much about the difficulties of a relationship that is ending. Just for its cleverness, I've always liked, "It must have been that yesterday was the day that I was born" from Barely Breathing.

Yeah Tammy, I agree with both of those as well. Those were just the ones I thought of off the top of my head. I could list more!

There are a lot of quotes that mean a lot to me, but I'll give you three that mean the most to me. The first describes me truthfully and the second descirbes how I feel about some current events. The third is probably like the best advice I could ever give someone.

"Somewhere in this heart of mine/ demons are working overtime/ would be I were ruled by sweet sweet fate/ never facing the choice I made." House full of Riches.

"I forgot the taste fears of fears and how they haunt the lips you're kissing/ and how loves just a waste of tears on someone who is missing/ and how I should shed such tears that kiss goodbye, this is how I want her" How my heart heard

"Tell me all your wildest dreams/ I don't really care if you don't know what they mean/ we're raiding the closet with skeleton keys/ you know it's easier than you think/ Even my wonder, even my fear, only aomount to a couple of tears" Reasons for living

Til I can think of more, I'll chat later. Much love my friends, and have a wonderful weekend.

From Wishful Thinking:

"little breakdowns in coastal towns
they come suddenly
rushing all over you
they come easily"

It was 2 or 3 in the morning when I first heard the song, and I just connected with the song, so to speak.

Ok these aren't Duncan's persay, but anyway:
"Singer, will the singing say it?
Singer, would such singing change it?
A whole life spent tuning strings,
And will it now mean anything
But empty chords that only bring
An endless, voiceless sorrowing?"

And my favorite that are all Duncan:
"And would you stuggle,
To realize this earthly paradise,
Is it so far above us to put away the poisnous ideas,
you know they're just ideas" from Forsadowing

I had to jump on the "favourite line" thing, I just couldn't help myself.

"Lookin' at me with one of those sideways glances" --Out of Order

"It's so much better when you run your fingers through my hair, humming like the air" --In Between ((popular choice, and with good reason!!))

"And now I shed such tears but never cry" --This is How My Heart Heard

Michael! Hey hey, welcome to the board!!!

Ah, so many, can't decide!!
Here's just a few...

"You play guitar for perfect strangers/Write some words they try to sell/ Then you sing these things in public/ Sometimes not very well/ You get paid to go to parties/Drinking colors, talking trash/ You get laid because you're arty/ Then wonder why it never lasts"
-Nothing Special

"Sometimes the more you wonder why, the worse it seems to get"
-She Runs Away

"Feel the blades of grass, how it brings you back. It will always be, only as green as you can see"
-Wishful Thinking

Home :
I look through the darkness into the sky the moon up above me brilliantly shines
I've never been happier watching it glow
I'm here by myself but I know I'm not alone.

The End Of Outside:
I want to feel closer now to the stars in the sky

Reasons For Living:
There is a rhythm it's near and it's far it flows through the heart of us

That Says It All:
Well listen here my friend I can't continue to pretend that it's alright

House Full Of Riches:
Would that I were ruled by sweet sweet fate never facing the choice I made

Weird!! I just chose this thread to see what was up with it, and as I opened it I was kinda thinking -
1. Is Candice "Cadence" going to email me her address? Please just email me regarding what you want, etc - and I'd be happy to send what I have; it just might take a little longer at this point, but no problem.
2. I wonder what's been up with Julie lately, I haven't seen her around for awhile, and I kinda miss her....

And much to my amazement, you have both posted here! Very bizarre, because my husband and son are out for the evening and I have been getting some stuff done on the computer, and thought I'd log on here for a minute...and I really was thinking about the two of you as I opened this!

I'll answer the thread question while I'm here...
One of my faves:
"I saw myself and broke it down, till nothing more was left. She saw the symptoms right away, spoke to me in poetry - 'sometimes the more you wonder why, the worse it seems to get'"

I like to chew on that one. My intrepretation (for what it's worth :0} - When you've analyzed yourself to death trying to figure out why you "are" a certain way, you can drive yourself insane trying to figure it out - because you can't. Someone once said to me (it's so simple, it hardly makes sense) "You cannot solve your own thinking - with your own thinking." Oh. I see.
One more time: Hi Julie!
Shari

What a great topic. here's mine:

"when i'm with you, it feels like i'm home"
"i know it's not sensible to be this passionate"
"you should get over yourself like everyone else and enjoy"
"and you're looking at me with those sideways glances"
"i guess it's way beyond me to sleep with yesterday"
and probably my absolute fav:
"and all those alcoholic afternoons are getting in the way"
i know i wasted years in those afternoons.

anywho, thanks for the topic. its gives a glimpse into the people on this board.

"Something about hotel rooms and horses."
-from Rubbed Out

This is my favorite line from a Duncan song because of the way he says it in concert, with such power and emotion. And he's right: There IS something about hotel rooms and horses.

hi! i love the line "i thought i understood what i was to you" from In The Absence Of Sun. i also love
" everyone's looking,everyone hides
everyone's telling,but everyone lies
we're changing the subject,we're turning away away from the heart of it all." and
"Welcome to another day.
it doesn't seem that different'cause nothig has changed" from Reasons For Living.
it lot to write ,but i love his lyrics. they're so beautiful.

Hey Steph, "no matter what we get we never find our happiness...." one of my favorites as well. I find that in the 3 albums I have, I cannot pick out my favorites straight away. There are soo so many good ones. oooh, a good one
"light the candle and we're shown" (mirror in the heart)

my friend wrote this really awesome poem/story, about the battle between spring and winter nad then after reading it, i was listening to duncan sheik and a line reminded me of the story. The line being, "you were the sword at my side through all ghe winds that blow..." It reminded me of my friends story because he speaks of a sword coming from the sun's energy and he uses this sword to fight off winter. And in that line, he speaks of a sword being at his side through winds, winds often bringing cold(winter).
I love how when listening to music at different times in your life, the songs can take on different meanings. It's a wonderful thing.

''...A sorrow borne, and borne for
evermore, a sorrow borne with a howl, thou'lt come no more, no more for
evermore, no more for evermore, now...''
- 'Requiescat'

This is one I've always turned to for some reason. I never could really decipher the meaning, but I thought the words had an earthy rhythm to them, so I always considered them my favorite. I wrote these same words on the liner notes of a mixed cd I burned for a girl I was deeply in love with (properly referenced to Mr. Sater of course), along with a drawing I made of a person crying. I thought she'd like it, and she did (enough to where she basically professed her love to me shortly thereafter). Sadly, after brief on-again, off-again stints with her, this love could never be, and I was left with these words. And now they've taken apon a whole new meaning for me.

Thank you, Duncan and Steven, for bringing these words to life.

- Matthew

so hard to pick just one..

"Bite your to-o-o-o-o-ngue; you're not the only o-o-o-o-o-ne who's been let down
Bite your to-o-o-o-o-ngue; maybe it's good for you to hit the ground"

smart words .. .fantastic melody... great to hear him using his tenor vox forte-style

i like the line about the horses and hotels, too, but what does it MEAN?

Peace! - Edward

I love in between too. Maybe that's because me and my close friends and my ex are really in between.

I like this quote too cause it reminds me of the fun my ex and I had when we were still together as an item and sort of like we are now all at once.

It's so much better when you run your fingers through my hair, humming like the air/ I wish that I can hold you, I'm sorry if I seem...so in between

I just wonder what Duncan really meant when he said "the girls and the boys, and everything in between"

but my favorite line of all time is "somewhere within this heart of mine, demons are working overtime, and would that I were ruled by sweet, sweet fate, never facing the choice I had made....she comes to me only in the hours before I wake"

"Did you come down to take me or give me away?"

It makes me think of being in a situation where you know what you feel but you don't know what the other person is feeling. And every time they're about to say something you're terrified of what it's going to be. Are you going to take me away, or give me away? When I heard that lyric for the first time, I knew it would always be my favorite Duncan lyric.

I guess the ones I like the most are:

"you say you are happy / do you think this is fun? /well it's only a firefly to the light of the sun / you say this is living, you feel so alive / well you know everything dies"

that's exactly what I feel when someone happy is around me when I'm depressed

"somewhere whithin this heart of mine / demons are working overtime"

I feel this way all the time.

and the beatiful and unforgetable:
"the illusion is lasting /such beautiful masking / we hold it in our arms / it's all just varying degrees of con-artistry"

Rodolfo

Some of my favorites line from Duncan's albums:

Brought my heart to feed, but my mouth was fire.
Brought the earth my seed, but it would not flower.

Brought my voice. Just a noise to poor old Silence.
A clanging toy a clanging toy.

And youre lookin at me with one of those sideways glances you say I'm giving too much
and taking to many chances.

Reasons for living, never come cheap
But even your ones can put me to sleep

and then Im with you, No longer alone
When Im with you. It feels like Im Home.

Such an annoying conversation?

Taster of the poetry,
Of Pater, Proust, and Socrates

Somewhere within this heart of mine
Demons are working overtime

I don't want to say I'm just a friend
I don't want to wait around here
'Cos you don't want to feel no pain again"
