As you know, a few days ago was my birthday. My closest and dearest friend gave me a gift of "Way To Blue" by Nick Drake. Funny, I have never heard him sing in all these years of listening to music. I guess I didn't listen enough to Gene Shay while growing up in Philly and I listened very much; enough to hear Nick. I grew up loving English Folk, along with British Rock.....groups such as "Pentangle", with the then young Richard Thompson, and the very, very gifted, late Sandy Denny and so many others. Nick is very interesting and I haven't digested him yet, only listening to this work a couple of times. I do believe that the song "River Man" is extremely beautiful, lyrically and musically and I would venture to say that this song must be one of Duncan's favorites. Thats just my feeling right off the bat. I will listen much more and let you know what I think.
From The Morning..... but River Man really stands out. Thanks for your beauty Nick and inspiring so many!!!! M [This message has been edited by Blackwuzzy (edited July 12, 2001).] IP: Logged |

well, as a duncan fan, you do know he covered River Man, right? On Humming Along. Way to Blue is great and what an introduction...I remember reading of Nick Drake here and there for years, and finally picking it up...and then hearing Pink Moon on that car commercial, how weird. IP: Logged |

Don't you hate when you write something and then loose it before you post it? That's happened a few times. IP: Logged |

Well, as I was saying, Ken, I don't really recall ever knowing that about Duncan doing that song,(weve heard that name a million times) but I did know upon hearing Nick sing "River Man," that it must be one of Duncan's favorites. Just the very beauty of the music and words, it became very apparent to me. When I first heard him, I thought that he should be called the Mumbler. I could not understand a word. What an accent until I have really given it a listen. Another song I believe Duncan must really like is "Fruit Tree." Who am I to say? IP: Logged |

Nick Drake is wonderful! I have read that Duncan was influenced by him before but I didn't really give him a listen until that VW commercial, imagine that! Anyway, it's sad to know that Nick was painfully shy and had a hard time performing his music live. I'm so happy that Duncan has the courage to go out and play his introspective songs out to the public. Because like Nick, Duncan can write about things that mean something and people can reflect upon. I absolutely love "Way To Blue."
I would love those songs....... I am here up in Maine and it is soooooooo hot. It's suppose to be cooler here. I am on the Mid-coast, but inland its been in the 90's the last few days. That's just too hot for me. Can't wait to get back home. This is the first time I have visited the site in about 1 1/2 weeks. I hope everyone is well and staying cool. (Of course I am close at heart to all each day in thoughts and spirit) Love, IP: Logged |

Blackwuzzy... I am so sorry for you. I can't think of one good thing about being in Maine. I have to go there in a couple weeks, and all I want to do is go back to San Diego. As for Nick Drake, I love "Place to Be". The music itself sort of reminds me of "Pink Moon", but it has great lyrics. "Time Has Told Me" is another one of my favorites. IP: Logged |

Ericka, Maine is very, very beautiful..... it's just been hot. One of my favorite places....On the Coast. So many trees, beautiful clear skys, beauty abounds all over the place. It is far from home though...... close to 600 miles to be exact. Yes, it is very different from the city, infact just the opposite. Thats whats so nice. IP: Logged |

We'll have to agree to disagree... Maine is one of my least favorite places to go. But my mom is having her wedding there, so I have to go there next week. IP: Logged |

I have been wondering... I like Nick Drake because once upon a time someone made a comparison in an article about Duncan and I checked him out on a whim(I do that a lot). Did you guys get into Nick because of Duncan? IP: Logged |

Nope. I was reading a chat transcript from a chat w/ the author of my favorite book, and he said that he was really into Nick Drake so I checked it out. Didn't occur to me until later that Nick Drake was the Mr. Drake from That Says It All (I guess I was a little slow on that one...haha). IP: Logged |
