Perhaps this idea may seem a bit outrageous or silly, but I was wondering if any of the other musicians on this MB would be interested in recording a cover of their favorite Duncan song and compiling them onto a single CD. If it came through, we could give it to Duncan as a funny kind of gift. Maybe he would get a kick out of the gesture of our gratitude.

Anyone interested?

You will have to count me out. I have no musical talent, and if I were to sing, there is a chance that Duncan would go deaf listening to me! He, he, he.

But if I did have musical talent, I would do "Bite Your Tongue" or "Nothing Special" because they have an edge to them.

I'm not great on guitar - but I can pick up anything by ear on piano. Too bad I don't have a piano right now or a totally fixed broken right arm in order to play. Heck - I don't even have a piano right now. I'm DYING to compose. It's my creative life. Despite my other obligations in life, this is the one thing I hold sacred for myself. The last time I had a chance at the piano was a visit to my folks in late 1998. I was intrigued by "Varying Degrees of Con-Artistry" off Humming. So I plucked it out on the folks' piano. I play by ear. Flunked out of college (on music scholarship) because I became so bored with learning melodic sight reading and music theory, though I can play mean percussion and ad-lib any musical part (marimba, chimes, etc.) by hearing someone else play it. It's then memorized. Percussion is my main interest. I loved it when Duncan traveled around with Juliet Prater. I thought she was brilliant. I don't have a photographic memory, but is an "ear-memory" possible? I dunno. I'd like to get back into it, but now that I'm married and have a kid, it seems a little more distant. I've loved reading all of you guys' guitar tabs on this site. Couldn't do it myself. I picked up a guitar once and belted out my own stuff again. Nothing special. But able to compose chords, enough to write a song. Pretty lame though, except once. I was chosen in high school to attend a "gifted music writers camp" in Washington State as a high schooler. One out of two in each state accepted. Mind-blowing for me; I don't think I have any talent. After attending, we had to come back four months later with a song (self-composed or not) written for a full jazz band. So I did it by ear with the help of my high school band instructor (for writing the score.) And the result blew me away. They invitited a professional band in to play our stuff. Lost that tape. Too bad!! I love, live, and breathe music. If I were to cover a Duncan song, it would be "Varying Degrees"...because of its complexity. Anyone teaching guitar out there? Even piano - my fingerings are my own, and not correct. I'm probably just the same as anyone else here, although probably less able than some others. If you give me a Duncan song by piano, however, I may be able to contribute (what a joke!) I saw Rob tab out something on this site a while back. Blew me away. Oh well, it's fun to think about!

So who gets to pick what songs and who gets to make the master copy and all that other fun stuff?

Maybe we could all send Grant our top three picks for songs to cover and he can kind of decide who does what from there.. since it's his brilliant idea... It definitely could go one way or the other, but I think it'll be a blast trying to pull it off

I wish I could participate too, but unfortunately, I am musically challenged! But I would more than happy in the mechanics of making it happen! You know, making copies of the cd for those of us who would want it, mailing them, organization...etc. I think this is a really cool idea, and I would love to see it happen. Anything I can do to make it happend...I will!
cheers...

How's it going everyone?

Well first off, I'm very impressed at how promptly all of you guys(and girls) responded to my proposition. However, there seems to be a bit of apprehension amongst a few of us. For that matter I must deliver a quote which has actually become a mantra of sorts for me over the last year: "Approach a fresh and uncertain challenge with fear and arrogance." If the phrase "what the !@*# is he talking about?" just went through your head, just think of it as "let it rip - just go for it." Besides, my intentions for this were to be more so for fun and group comradery anyway.

So on with the program. So far, those who I've noted for contributions are:

"Angee", "Ron!", "Britt", "Nicole", "Acoustic Junkie", "Blackwuzzy", myself, and perhaps "Wolfspirit" - it didn't seem like a definite yes or no.

Additionally I think it's a very thoughtful and gracious gesture by "susanastrid" for volunteering her time and resources to publish copies of the final product for those who want one.

Finally, everyone should contact me at my email address (gmardigi@bu.edu) with a list of 2-3 song choices, with "1" being first choice. If the circumstance should arise that more than one person has choosen the same song for their 1st choice, then I will email them back and ask for opinions on how whoever should get that particular song(i.e., coin toss, rock-paper-scissors, hide and go seek, whatever)[just kidding around].

Once we've finished this first step of who's doing what, we can move on to setting deadlines for whenever we decide. Lenghy post, gotta go - talk to you guys(and girls) soon.

Take care,

Grant

Me too, me too. Don't forget me! What about "That Says It All". I mean he's writing it about some of his inspirations. And he's ours so what do ya say?

I take that thought back. I mean, I have a fairly ok voice, but nothing compared to his. Well, why don't we all contribute a line and make a song for him and sing it. Then we don't butcher his song, for lack of a better word, and it will be more from the heart and original.

Peace
Jennie

Grant - I really thought you were just joking! Then I got to thinking about how much I missed making music and got kinda teary-eyed (sob...lol), so sorry for the long dissertation. I do have some recording engineering experience, if anyone has a studio. I'll bow out on playing any instruments, though, unless needed. I do believe there are many folks here much more accomplished than I. But heck! I'll play percussion and it might not suck....
Shari
And if it was Ron! instead of Rob that typed that guitar tab on one of Duncan's "Albums" threads, my humble apologies. It rocked.

ARGH!!! I don't have a musical bone in my body My talent lies strictly in the writing. Perhaps I could write a song for Duncan and someone could set music to it?? Just a random thought I'd love to get involved somehow

I would love to do a song! I just graduated as a piano major and now I'm going for my MM in Composition...I'd love to do something a little less known, perhaps...one of the softer s/t tracks or Everyone, Everywhere could be fun. I'm up for anything though...if you have suggestions, let me know at umop-apisdn@mail.com.

Hehe! I'm so excited!! ECP

I e-mailed Grant a couple days ago and Foreshadowing was my first choice, but there are a lot of others I'd love to do too!! So, you can go ahead and do it, or maybe we could find some way to do it together, since we live so close!!

By the way... What's the deal for Sunday?? Are you guys going to SGI?? I can take a break from moving and try to make it up there. I've been wanting to go for the past couple weeks. Let me know!!

Anyone ever figure out how we're gonna record this extravaganza? I will play percussion, but I can record it. I have experience with 16 track, but would have to familiarize myself with the digital process unless we're going analog. So who's coughin' up the studio? Anyone have a 16 track layin' around? We could get away with an 8 track...but with 16 we could accomplish more layering, which is handy when trying to bring something to master quality. I'll bring my new I-Mac! I don't know how to use it yet, but with I-tunes we could put it all on hard disk and mess with it. That technology is just freakin' fabulous...
