My husband likes Duncan Sheik, but is not quite as avid about his music as I am. But when I told him what a great time I had meeting Duncan after a show in 1998, he was interested in meeting him this time around. We were able to catch Duncan after his soundcheck during the day before a concert in May. It was fun and down-to-earth as is the usual meeting experience with Duncan. But my husband just shared something with me I didn't hear that day. After we were done chatting, Duncan was making his way toward the bus and was stopped by the same homeless man who had been badgering us for quite a while earlier. The man stopped Duncan and asked "Are you some kind of big star or something?" Duncan replied, "No, stars are in the sky, my friend."
Is anyone else ever completely floored by Duncan's humility? Does his seemingly shy nature ever just strike you that he really just believes he's "Nothing Special"? Not only does he treat his fans so nicely and genuinely, but he makes a comment like that to a homeless man, thinking no one else is in ear shot of hearing him. Duncan doesn't live in the sky with the stars. He lives here on earth with the rest of us. We might think he's extra special, which he is. But by way of being so brilliant as an artist coupled with the humility of the guy who lives next door. Does this ever strike any of you as odd when you speak with him...that when you say "thanks, Duncan" and he says "no, thank YOU" - that he really means it?
Hope everyone sees beautiful fireworks tonight! Have fun; be careful! Happy 4th of July!!
Shari

Well, Ive always known the man was brilliant. And i am floored by the rush of wind around his wrist. The gust everytime he strikes his chord. It is never cold.

I definatly think Duncan meant every word of that. I think that he really loves what he is doing and is definatly not in it for the money. I think that if Duncan had no fans (which would never happen) and had nothing he would still be singing on the side of the road because he loves it. More than doing it for himself, he does it for us..the people who love his music, and we enjoy it so much that after the show we would wait for hours to see him. Even if he is tired and wants to go home..he will stick around for his fans that have been waiting to say how much they loved him, even though he's heard it a million times (cause it's true). Duncan is such a great guy, and what he told that homeless person tells him apart from the rest of the people out there.

Shari-

Thanks so much for sharing that story. Hearing things like that really reaffirm my belief that there is so much beauty in this world.

I can't imagine trying to be in Duncan's shoes and trying to keep a level head. I am utterly amazed every time I see him by the patience, humility, and generosity he displays towards everyone he meets.

My friends continually ask me why I spend so much time on this message board So many beautiful stories and amazing people.....

Thanks Shari!!!

Wolf- Thanks for sharing that story,
I have to say I was deeply and completely impressed with his humble attitude.I did get to meet him briefly in April after the concert in Orlando and was so amazed at what he was like in person.I didn't know quite what to expect when I went up to him,but when I introduced myself I was completely taken by the genuine and easygoing way about him.It is a rare occasion that you come into contact with someone who is truly a genuine and real person. The experience of meeting Duncan truly will stay with me and I will treasure the memory of it always.

The truth of the matter is that Duncan has a really good heart, clear voice and mind. He is able to gently touch our worlds and make it a better place. What Love and Kindness must be inside of him! He gives it to us always.

That's why we so love him back.
Thank you D., M.

There is much Love in his music.

It could have been a haiku. except it wasnt about nature, well the wind...and you know...didnt really get the syllables right. not really 5-7-5. but other than that...A fine haiku. Its a haiku in memory.

he strikes me as one of the nicest musicians in the business. i continue to be impressed that he made the effort to personalize each autograph that he gave. how many "rock stars" can you say that about? i think it's cool that he doesn't consider himself a star. he's a successful musician. that's makes him a star to me.
