Ok, in my never ending quest to start a 'hot' thread, who are your guilty pleasures? I hope this hasn't already been done, or I will feel like a dodo (and make like one and become extinct).

Anyway, for me, I would say, oh...Peter Frampton, the Knack, Tommy Tutone, Kansas/Styx/etc, Bread, Frankie Goes to Hollywood (the first one), Hall and Oates, Jackson Five, how's that?

Your turn, let us all enjoy your guilt.

Absolutely no excuse for the Hall n' Oats. You should be ashamed of yourself. One of my scariest moments was watching mtv as a wee lass and the hall and oats christmas video comes on. i was very frightened. i still cant watch it to this day. scares the living poo outta me.

i think the most embarassing cd i own is the savage garden cd. i bought it before they were the fabulous pop group you dont really see anymore. i liked the "chica-cherry-cola" part. i paided 15 bucks for "chica-cherry cola".

I also bought a shania twain record once. i dont know where it is now. bought a faith hill once. dont know what that is. (that is all the country music i have bought. so relax. all the other stuff in my collection rocks. oh wait, ryan adams is alt-country. but he rocks.) i liked hanson for about a minute. im glad thats over. but they seem to be pretty good musicians in their old age, so im not that embarrased.

and just so u know that im not the kind of person that sells my uncool cds. i keep everything i buy. bc i feel ur music reflects you. even the bad stuff.

I'm not feeling guilty by saying I love Savage Garden! Love them to pieces. I really liked their second cd. I liked it more than the first.
As for my real guilty pleasures: Ricky Martin. Love Ricky. Shake that bon-bon! hehe. That's all.

wolfie, shake that groove thang...Frankie says dance! I love the first half of that cd,up to right after Two Tribes...that first part of the album is one incredible piece of work, I think (mostly due to Trevor Horn).

Hall and Oates....you know, they had the most hits of anyone in the 80's? (or something like that)

I had that Hanson cd for a bit, I think they are gonna end up surprising some peeps.

My wife actually has some Fresh Prince that I have tried to sell now and again, but she won't let me (and Sam Harris, which is even worse, from what little I know).

Ok, people, remember, I want this to be a real hot thread!

I tend to listen to music alot of my friends put me down for still listening to. Lets see... my guilty pleasures are Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller & Billy Idol (to name a few . Should I be embarrased??? I mean, I'm not, but should I be? Ha,ha

I have a billion and one...but this takes the cake! I went to a BSB concert with some friends. But it was actually pretty fun. We were as far back as you could possibly get, right against the wall, but we had fun. (How embarrassing.)

I think that I might win this one. I like boybands. Pretty much all of them. I really dig OTown right now. You know, the guys from Making the Band. I only like maybe five of their songs, but I listen to them in my car a lot. And I tape the show.

And, while I don't find this embarassing, a lot of people will laugh. Barry Manilow. I really, really like Barry Manilow. He puts on a pretty good show.

I'm sure there are others that some people would consider a guilty pleasure while I do not. I like the Go-Go's. And I already know what some of you will say to that. Okay, I'll just admit it. Vanilla Ice. Which way to the support group? Michael Jackson's Thriller.

But, it's not like I said Milli Vanilli. Or the Partridge Family.

Enjoy the laugh,
Niki

What a riot!!! Actually as I was pondering whatever wisecrack I was gonna make, it was between Milli Vanilli and the Partridges!!! Geez...

OK Niki, I had the first Barry Manilow album, believe it was a picture of Barry and a beagle dog on the front. Remember they looked a little alike. Weird. I gave up on Barry after "Mandy" though, cuz I was an aspiring 4-year-old musician (ok lol) and then I heard "I write the songs the make the whole world sing..." and uh, he like didn't even write it so I got rid of Barry and took home Paul McCartney. HE wrote the songs that made the whole world sing. All was cool again. Til Paul took up with Michael Jackson. That didn't quite rock in my world.
My REAL guilty pleasure? Kenny Loggins. Take your shots guys!! I'm armed and ready to fire!!
One more thing. I believe Ken here (no, not Loggins! Meyer Jr.!) is an extremely talented artist. No bones about that. So I'm trying to picture Ken the artist with headphones on singing falsetto to "MMM BOP"
This thread is fun!!!!

Ok Ok, i got another. Swing. I loved the swing movement that lasted about 5 seconds. I thought it was hella cool. I love Cherry Poppin Daddies and Brian Setzer. Squirrel Nut Zippers were good and i think a little too authentic for the public.

And dont tell me that i was the only one that went into Gap and tried on some 50 dollar khakis and then jumped out of the dressing screaming "CRAZY! COOL! NANANANANANA" That was when you started to dance.

I just have to help out a fellow in need. This thread is a great idea Ken! I hope it grows bigger and bigger.I guess my biggest guilty pleasure is Madonna's Immaculate Collection CD. I know it isn't exactly deep and mysterious art, but man, some of those tunes are so danceable! It's just pure fun. : )

oh god, im actually coming out...
~CRINGE~ michael jackson, LL cool J, Puff Daddy, Savage Garden (although they are very good. there lyrics just don't cut it though) Lenny Kravitz, NSYNC i can't beleive i've opened myself up to this scrutiny! NSYNC is good though guys, really. Jewel, Madonna, god, okay... im open to opinions. but be nice.
and who in their right mind would wonder if they should be embarassed for liking billy joel?! thats almost as bad as being embarassed for liking duncan.
billy is awesome and happens to be on my remaining 4 that i would pay over $200 to see live.
#1 - michael jackson (i know)
#2 - R.E.M.
#3 - U2
#4 - Billy Joel
duncan was #1, but i saw him in portland in may... the trip cost me well over $200 and was well worth it.

peace.

well, I have, on tape, a bunch of the great Rhino compilations, Have a Nice Day (Super hits of the 70s), and Didn't I blow your mind (soul hits of the 70's), and a few of those on cd..well, actually, my wife bought a new rhino that is sort of a combination of those two called Have a Nice Decade, and it incorporates sound bits from that time (bits from commercials, news, politicians, etc)...not guilty at all, baby!

Hey Hummingalong! Lenny Kravitz aint no guilty pleasure! He's a major pleasure pleasure! I thought I was supposed to post stuff here I felt guilty about. Not Lenny, not no way. He rocks.
Ken - I liked Kenny Loggins first solo record as well, but where I'm really guilty is with "Leap of Faith" onward. I like all the spiritual stuff he's into. You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you that my husband and I attended a 9-hour spiritual seminar at the church we once attended, hosted by Kenny and Gary Zukov, author of "The Seat of the Soul."
Or maybe it's "The Seed of the Soul." I dunno. I didn't buy the book. I went to hear Kenny. And he rocked spiritually and musically. It was a bizarre combination. But we got a lot out of it!

Ok i was listening to Ron and Fez (new york radio show) and they were talking about one hit wonders that they thought would last and songs that sucked but somehow you always end up dancing to when u hear them. Halarious bit, but then i got to thinking. What are some example of good songs gone bad?

Anything by Kenny Loggins (including TopGun, and Caddyshack*)

Entire Footloose sdtrk

THe Safety Dance

Goody 2 shoes - adam ant

Mr. Roboto - styx

Wham! - does it really matter which song?

90's:

Jordan Knight (the former newkid)- that comeback hit he had a few years back. I just remember the pelvic thrust in the video made me laugh everytime.

Van Halen III - i thought this version showed the most promise. oh boy. how was i wrong. but the one hit they had was pretty damn good i thought. Gary Scanise or whatever the his name was is actually a talented guy. why couldnt they make it work? they had a half naked chick in the video and everything. what went wrong?

* caddyshack is the greatest comedy ever made. the theme still rocks. but if it was released today, id think what the bloody hell...

You guys have some pretty good guilty pleasures.

I would have to say that my guilty pleasure is Tom Jones (or Tom and his Jones, as my mother would say). My friends see the greatest hits album in with my cds and burst into rolling on the floor belly laughs. Oh well. I also tend to sneak a listen to N'Sync from time to time...never bought a cd of thiers but I won't change it if it comes on the radio and no one else is in the car.

hahaha, tom jones, that is a good one! I remember she's a lady still too well (and I remember seeing him necking with Petula Clark, I think, on is tv show as a kid and thinking it was pretty steamy). And, hey, he gained some credibility with that Prince cover and that collaboration with..who was it...art of noise?

Let's see. There was a time when I liked Britney's STRONGER. Please no stone throwing. Well I used to love Celine Dion's songs and I listened to her CD all the time. How about Power Rangers album? That's serious, isn't it? Of course it was a long time ago. But my most guilty pleasure is that I once liked movies like Armageddon, The Man in The Iron Mask, Scream 3, Spice World, Notting Hill and other such crap.

Aren't we being slightly snobbish by calling these various artists "guilty pleasures"? Granted, I do agree with a lot of these selections, and some of you should feel guilty : ), BUT, how do we know that a similar thread on another messageboard has been started and Duncan Shiek has been listed there as a "guilty pleasure"?

hi ken - your topic is so good, I feel moved to commment.

yes. I must admit to the truth.

I am an avid MONKEES fan.

I was in love with Peter Tork in my youth.... and I mean giddy with my crush....
and believe it or not, I'm really pissed at Mike Nesmith for not coming out and touring with the band.... he acts like his time w/ the Monkees was the most embarassing of his life - but everyone has to start somewhere! and I loved his beanie!

TMI?

oh - and can I just say that WHAM was a visionary group!?! George Michael was rocking at the tender age of 18.... WHAM should never be grouped with the likes of Milli and Vanilli.... SACRILEGE!

cheers - r

I am a 30 yr. old DuranDuran fan! I own appx. 30 albums, demos, bootlegs, etc. I've seen them live numerous times, including the VH1 Ultimate Office Party concert held about 5 yrs. ago. I walked for an hour through London rain to loiter outside the house they were recording in. It paid off because I met Nick Rhodes. I have a large and very tacky framed poster of Simon leBon hanging in my apartment. (It's in my office, not a main living area.)

I think that qualifies as a guilty pleasure, or maybe I just need to get a life!

lol Sorry, even though I'm replying a year after someone wrote it I thought it was hilarious that someone else liked the "cherry cola" part in the Savage Garden song. I thought it was something like "drink of cherry cola" though. That is so funny. That's the only song I like of theirs and I only like a few words. Eh, cherry cola is great so why not?

Hey I like the chica cherry coke song too, but I didn't buy the CD.

I got Alanis "guru" Cd, you know the one after she goes to India and is enlightened, well enlightened or not, I didn't really like that CD. Wow this is my first time admitting that to myself!

Another Savage Gardener here, but STRICTLY a *short* number of their songs, like "Truly Madly Deeply" and "Crash and Burn"...

...ok, throw some 80's new wavers in the mix too. I don't care what anyone says, I love "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs and "Material Girl" by Madonna! Bite my tongue, indeed.

I have to admit it. My guilty pleasure is *gulp* Britney Spears. I really like the first few songs from her most recent CD. I listen to them at top volume in my car and wiggle skankily (a la Britney) while I drive.

I know I should be ashamed, but that pop music puts me into a shameless stupor every time.

And just to add insult to injury, I'll also offer that I am an NSync fan. Mostly because they are pretty (and I have delusional plans to marry space cadet Lance who is THE perfect man for me, no kidding), but I also really really like the last track off of Celebrity. It's called "Do Your Thing" and it's really not a bad song.
