We all love it when Duncan surprises us with a cover of another musician's song. Of course though, nothing compares to his own music!

Yesterday, I was entertaining myself with visions of a tribute concert to Duncan. I was looking around my cd collection and thinking about what singer or group would do what song.

Here's my lineup:

In The Absence of Sun~~ Sarah McLachlan would give it that sultry air

Barely Breathing~~ Lisa Loeb, this would be so much fun to hear

Reasons For living~~ Rufus Wainwright, he's got the keyboard skills and an inquistive voice

Serena~~ Weezer, would do a kick-ass job with this song

Home~~ David Gray, it just sounds right

Out Of Order~~ Elliot Smith, would be able to pull this off with his sensitivity

The End Of Outside~~ Bjork, I really want to hear this happen! Her music blurs the lines of reality.

Now onto songs from Humming..........

In Between~~ REM, this is what their music is about!

Rubbed Out~~ P.J. Harvey, would rock this out with her powerful voice and guitar

Alibi~~ Counting Crows, it's their song that got away!

Varying Degrees Of Con-Artistry~~ RADIOHEAD!!! This performance would go on last! C'mon, I could practically already hear Thom Yorke sing "the market place is doing fine".

Everyone, Everywhere~~ Dave Matthews band, their universal combination of sounds would fit well.

Then there's
wishful Thinking~~ Erykah Badu! Threw you off? I love this goddess of music, i just had to put her in here somewhere. Imagine the her smooth, jazzy, etheral feel she put to it.

maybe Stephen and Duncan would like to hear,

Mr. Chess~~ Elvis Costello
A Mirror In the Heart~~ Tracy Chapman
The Wilderness~~ Tori Amos
Sad Stephen's Song~~ The Sundays or the EELS
Winds That Blow~~ Ben Folds Five

I'm so interested in what other musician's you would like to hear perform one of Duncan's songs.

Best Wishes Always,
Amy

Nice topic! No one will ever compare to Duncan's wonderful singing and songwriting talent, but some will try and my suceed in honoring his music now or down the road. So ummm...
Out of Order-Jewel
In Between-Dan Wilson
I have no ideas! Well, I'm not good at this at all! But, here's a couple of songs Duncan could do covers of...(Sorry to change your topic!)
Revolve by Nine Days (They are really pretty good! A little louder than Duncan, but they have ok lyrics and are awesome in concert! Really sweet guys!)
Peace

Whizz, I definitely like that Björk and Erika Badu thing, I CAN hear it... WHEW!!!

Hmmm... guess, the best cover version I could imagine would be if Mr. Buckley could sing 'A body goes down', if you know what I mean...

Oh, really my fave would be, if Seal does 'Reasons for living'

Thanks BrokenG and Sunday's Child for your replies!

Wow! Jewel and Seal! This tribute concert (album?) sounds so awesome right now!

Again , no one would be able to perform Duncan's songs as well as he could, but it would still be fun to hear.

Any other musicians?

I would definatley have to recommend Ani DiFranco doing Serena. Ben Harper could do House Full of Riches, Faith Hill could do Lo and Behold (I dont really like her music but she has an amazing voice), Jimmy's Chicken Shack could put an interesting spin on Nothing Special. Hmmm, I guess that's all I got, but keep um coming, I like this topic! Much love and aloha~ Molly

Radiohead interpreting 'Varying Degrees Of Con-Artistry' would be very interesting!

So would Duncan doing 'Tripping Billies' by Dave Matthews Band...
'Eat, drink, and be merry,
for tomorrow we'll die...'

That'd be cool...

Alright! I'm happy that you all find this entertaining, as well. I just happen to LOVE music and connecting with it. Has anybody seen, "Dancer In The Dark", the movie starring Bjork? It is absolutley amazing how her character would listen to the sounds around her and make songs in her head.
Anyway, I realize that a tribute album is usually done for artists who have been around for awhile and their careers are sort of peaked. But, wouldn't it be cool if tribute albums were done for artists who are still going strong? Talk about a boost of confidence! Who doesn't like to know that they have affected someone in a positive way?
Which leads me to the thought of tribute bands. There are many of them around where I live. Some examples are, Human Clay, a tribute band for Creed. Itchy Fish, is a Pearl Jam tribute band. Shania's Twin, is a man who does Shania Twain's songs.

Can you think of starting your own tribute band for Duncan or just do it solo? What name would you go under?

Let's also keep this going with names of some more artists who can perform one of Duncan's songs.

Aloha back to everyone, who has responded so far! Thanks! Everyone's ideas are fantabulous!
Molly, I think it's cool that you picked Faith Hill to do "Lo and Behold", even though you don't really like her music but recognize her beautiful voice, I agree! Also, I'll be paying more attention to Aimee Mann, since she's getting some high recommendations.
Carry On!

Best Wishes Always,
Amy

Oh this is a fun game. Lets get started.

Ok one of my favorite vocalists is the lead singer for Train. I am absolutely in love with his voice. But when asked which Duncan song would sound good, I think I had to pick something off of phantom moon. THe first album is really delicate. and the songs i really love on there match too well with duncan's voice and to change it would disrupt a lot of the high parts.

So I think the Train lead would song great singing Longing Town. Its not too high and very breathy. It isnt too soft so he doesnt have to whisper. He can pipe those vocals full of air and get a full sound, which is what i think is his forte.

Sarah Brightman singing Lo and Behold. If it's not Duncan, its gotta be an opera singer. And a full orchestera. In a concert hall. Imagine all that sound boucing throughout the tall architectural dome...

Jude would rock at singing Lover from Hell. Its his kinda song. It sounds very judeish.

I like the idea of Rufus Wainwright doing some covers of Duncan. He would do the songs justice, no doubt. He's new album Poses is great. His lyrical prose is mind blowing.

Hmm...I would also enjoy some covers by Josh Rouse, Joseph Arthur, Hawksley Workman, and maybe even Jimmy Eat World...

WOW, the possibilities!

Speaking of Nine Days... they're from LI, not too far from where I live actually. I've seen them SO many times. One of the first times was in this place with less than 50 people. It's been so cool seeing them get popular of the year. I read in the news paper that their next album is going to be more rockin' (Wallflower and Counting Crows-ish) That's much more my speed... so, it should be cool. BTW, I was thinking of selling Madding Crowd CD that the *entire* band signed. I don't ever listen to it, so I figured a real fan would enjoy it more. Let me know if you're interested!

Rock on!

I'd really like to see some old-school musicians step up to the mike for this one. That would be interesting.

Bob Dylan - Nothing Special

Tom Petty - In Between

Don Henley - Bite Your Tongue

Stevie Nicks - Sad Stephen's Song

Lucinda Williams - November

Tears For Fears - Serena

I know, weird picks, but what can I say?

Great! I'm happy to see that people are still having fun with this topic!

There have been some more more great pair ups and suggestions added on to the list. Thanks a mundo!

springroz, a concert hall with a big architectural dome sounds like a great place to have this concert.

galore4, Joseph Arthur is very cool. I don't know the other people you mentioned but, I'm keeping my ears open.

Bodhisattva, WOW!! Great "old school" list. Tears For Fears! I loved them back in the eighties! I still have to sing along loudly whenever, I hear them on the radio.

Let's keep it up! Still no suggestions for doing your own personal tribute. All I can think of is singing "Days Go By", since it touches me so deeply. Just a violin and myself. It would take some intense rehearsing on my part though, because I'd have to maintain the integrity of the song.

C'mon everyone, don't be shy, lets add more to the list!

Have A Happy FireWorks Day!

Best Wishes Always,
Amy

Sting- House Full of Riches
Kyle Cook (of Matchbox Twenty)- Little Hands
J.LO (haha just kidding)
Chris Cornell- In Between
Eagle Eye Cherry- Bite Your Tongue
INXS (yes, with Michael Hutchence one could only wish...)- Out of Order
Fiona Apple- Rubbed Out (she could SO pull it off)
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Rubbed Out (hey- featuring Fiona..I'm liking this)
Lisa Loeb (a classmate! wouldn't that be sweet!)- Reasons for Living
Radiohead- November (it would sound hot, trust me)

There's plenty more where that came from... just let me think about it... (Nice topic!) Oh- I love the Tracy Chapman idea too.

Hi Angee! Joe Strummer, eh? My head may be buried in the sand or something because i'm not sure if I've heard of him. Can anybody let me in on the music of Mr.Strummer?

blue_pyche, I really like Toad the Wet Sprocket too. I still haven't gotten over their breakup or even the Gin Blossoms (who they remind me of).

Okay lets say, Weird Al wanted to do a tribute song.....I read in a post somewhere that Duncan joked around and changed "Longing Town" to "Longing to Be O-Town", that would be pretty funny. Or maybe instead of "Mr. Chess" it could be "My Hairy Chest". I can see the video right now with Weird Al rubbing his hands through this nasty rug on his chest ewwww...

I can only think of 2 artists & 2 songs:

Bite your tongue - the Cranberries
Home - Sting

I love some of the suggestions that others have made, though!

Hi, Angee!
That same night I asked about Joe Strummer, I went to Borders book store and that very album you mentioned was on the listening booth. So, surprised and curious, I gave it a listen and thought it was definetly cool.

Hi bronwen! Thanks for throwing in your suggestions too!

Best wishes,

I heard something like that from somewhere but I can't remember. also on topic, for...oh no, I forgot! damn it! It was really cool, too! Quickly people, name some artists, I just can't remember who I wanted to do an interpretation of serena! *runs off and cries in a dark corner*

Yes, Duncan and Lisa went to Brown University in Rhode Island, where I live! Back while I was in high school I could've been sitting next to Duncan in a restaurant and not even know it, because I've always liked to hang out near the university.
Anyway, he used to be in a band with her and some other girls.

Trent Reznor, that's a name that was missing on this thread so far, he would do a very interesting cover song indeed.

Hey, I just thought of another one:

Have Tina Turner and/or Macy Gray do "Nothing Special." You know, they could turn that into a great duet...
