I was just wondering if anyone remembers the first time they heard Duncan. Where they were, what they were doing, etc.
It's such a vivid memory for me. I was on a road trip with my family last August. My sister had had his first CD since 96', but I was 12 so it didn't really interest me. Anyway, I was at a point where I had listened to pretty much ever CD she and I owned, so I pop his in.
I couldn't stop listening to it. I played it over and over again for 6 or 7 hours. We were driving through the Bad Lands in Utah I think it was, and the sky was grey but glowing cause the sun was setting, and these huge thunder heads were coming in against all the giant red cliffs. It was beautiful in an odd, peacful, sad sort of way, kind of like his music and I was hooked.

The first time i heard Duncan he was 10 feet infront of me. The moment he opened his mouth and closed his eyes i fell in love. Duncan played at this place in st pete fl where all the punk rock bands play its an old broken down theatre and they put out lawn chairs in rows i was 3 back in the middle Duncan wouldn't open his eyes when he sang it was almost like he had to invision every chord and word in his mind to be sure it was perfect. and that it was. after the show i went directly to walmart and bought the CD which never left my cd player for nearly a month. Sadly it took him 4 years to get back to florida.

I don't remember. To tell you the truth I think I picked up the first album without a listen at all. Purely on a whim. *shudders* Creepy huh?

The first time i heard him, i didnt really like him. He was kinda mellow and just not groovy as my beloved Dave Matthews. I was 15. The second time i listened, i just remember the end of outside, and just being amazed that he had to be buddhist. He had to be!! There was no other place to get ideas like this. I was just amazed at the complexity of his music. But it was all so simple. It was all 3 minutes long. I remember having a long day, a long week, a long sadness. He just moved me.

So I can't remember the exact first time I heard him, but I remember "Barely Breathing" just making my skin tingle. For a few weeks I was trying hard to find out who this band/person was because I NEEDED the CD; just had to hear more of that voice! A few days later, my best friend at the time was like, "Yeah, I found out who does that breathing song."

"WHO???" I asked, eager for a name...any name.

"Someone named Drunken Sheep? Maybe I didn't hear it right."

No, she did not hear it right! So I will always remember my friend and Drunken Sheep whenever I listen to his first album. Sometimes I still refer to him that way, just because it makes me smile.

I must say though, that that CD did not leave my CD player for roughly.... a year? (I have a tendency to do that... I had Better Than Ezra's "How Does Your Garden Grow" in my player for over a year too, lol.) Even my cat (may he rest in peace) liked that CD in particular. It's the only one that would soothe him.

Fond, fond memories!

I don't remember the first time I heard "Barely Breathing," but I do remember a certain 4-hour round-trip drive to a job interview when the song was really getting popular. I was heading to Indianapolis, Indiana, and was able to get a gazillion different radio stations, and they were all playing the song so much that when it ended on one station I could flip and find it almost immediately on another. I spent that entire trip singing that song. It's still one of my favorites.

Be good,

Big John

And just as an addendum, I agree with neelyohara: Better Than Ezra's "How Does Your Garden Grow?" is a masterpiece, and I think their new album, "Closer," is even better.

i thought barely breathing was sung by a country singer when i first heard it on air. i thought the song was okay, but not really outstanding. then i saw his pic in the paper and thought he looked a bit too nice, not cowboyish at all. then the review of his first album was published and it was criticaaly acclaimed and prompted me to buy his album. i was 14 then and fell deeply in love with his music. it was all i played during the stressfull time of the important lower form examination. he actually helped me scored straight a's.love him? to pieces.

The first time I heard Duncan's music was a few years ago. I wasn't working over the summer that year. Actually I think it may have been my last free summer. Anyways, I was a typical bored teenager and watched VH1 everyday. I first heard Duncan's music when I saw the video for Barely Breathing. So, now that song has sentimental value. Yeah yeah, cheesie, I know, but I don't mind.

Well, I am a newbie, so be nice. Anyway, I remember the first time I heard Duncan's music. It was actually his music video. It was a lazy sunday and I was just sitting around the house with nothing to do. I was flicking throuhg channels and stop on vh1. I'm sitting and watching and getting bored because they're showing old videos. I was about to change the channel when they said they were going to show a new video. It just so happened to be duncans video for barely breathing. The video was simplistic yet I marveled at the beauty of duncan's style and the emotions he expressed through his song. I went completely nuts over it and two days later I bought the album and fell in love with it. It was incredible. Unfortunately, no one else I know listens to duncan anymore, so I'm kind of by myself with it in a sense. oh well. that's my expirience.

I was sitting in a Hy-Vee gorcery store eating breakfast with my mother. I think we were watching Good Morning America or some other morning show, and Duncan was on singing "Barely Breathing." They were talking about how long it had been number one on the charts. I don't think I had heard it before- I started to sing along with the chorus.

actually, i was in the car and heard the song "barely breathing". of course i had to know who sang it so i waited for the dj to announce his name. at first i thought he said "dunkin' sheep". i thought that was weird, nobody had that kind of name ever. so i called the radio station and asked for that song and who sang the song. i had to let the dj repeat his name so i can buy the album right away (on impulse! which is so not me). had a hard time buying the album 'coz he's not really known here in the philippines and the salesladies have really broken english. but nway, bought duncan's album and never regretted it since.

My first time? I was 15 and "Barely Breathing" was all OVER the radio. I loved the song! But, my incredible fascination with Ducan's music came to me last year. I had a friend of mine tell me my voice sounded kind of like Duncan Sheik. So, remembering B.B. from my high school days I went out and bought the first album. I fell in love immediately!! He came through Detroit a year ago this month, but unfortunately I was out of town at the time and missed him. You can be sure I won't miss his next performance here!!

I actually can't rememeber really well. I don't think I heard it on the radio right away but when it starting to become a staple of the radio station. Anyways, I know he came here to Houston and I'm now mad that I didn't go to see him but at that moment in time, I was just starting to listen to English music. You see, all I listened to was in spanish so I wasn't that much of an interested party when it came to English pop or anything. Sad I know, I know.

A few months ago I was in math class, mind a-wandering, and Barely Breathing just got stuck in my head. It was wierd- I hadn't heard the song in years. It drove me crazy for days cuz I didn't know who the song was by! Finally, I found out it was Duncan, and found Phantom Moon at the library. Loved it...got both his other CDs and I've been a fan ever since. Duncan's an amazing artist...but no one here's really heard of him and the CDs are hard to find. Oh well, maybe it's a good thing, he's our little secret!

I was 15 and it was summertime, and I was sitting in my room, on the floor with the fan on me, and I remember I was crying because my boyfriend of the time had just hit me (the first and last time I've ever been hit by a guy) and I was so scared and thinking that at least now I knew the real him, when I suddenly heard this song on the radio. What caught my attention was when Duncan sings
"What is this attraction? I only feel the pain. There’s nothing left to reason and only you to blame Will it ever change?"
It was Barely Breathing. After that, he became my favorite singer and that song remained a favorite.

Ah yes, I remember! I was listening to a radio program called world chart show and then Duncan debuted. I instantly fell in love with the song... however, his cds never arrived here, so I am rediscovering him again, and I think Phantom moon is one of the 2 best cds ever made!!! (being Tori Amos' Boys for Pele the other)

1996ish, I was a teenager, when all my friends were into the hip hop and rap, I was looking for something different, more meaningful. I flipped away from the most popular music channel, and found him on vh1. I admit it was his good looks that got my attention. Once I got over the shock, I realized that I really like his voice, it was beautiful (still is beautiful). When I brought the cd, I found that the new artist, Duncan Sheik, was more than just another pretty face, and great voice. His meaningful lyrics capivated me, and I've been a fan ever since.

you know i find that very interesting because the exact opposite was true for me. when i first heard B.B. i thought it was ok, but when i saw duncan my cynical brain said another pretty face being marketed with a mediocre voice and decent music. i immediately decided to forget about him. it wasn't until a few years ago that a friend downloaded some mp3's and Barely breathing was one of them. i listened to it and remembered that i kind of liked the song and looked duncan up on the web to see if he was still out there. i read an article about him being buddhist which caught my attention because i think buddhism is a very intellectual rational concept. when i found out duncan wrote his own lyrics and music and played nearly all of the instruments on his albums i decided to give him an unbiased listen and was pleasantly surprised at how much i really enjoyed his music. have appreciated his music ever since

Wow, a year after you've written this I see the post.

I do remember the first time I heard Duncan..
I was in a store and they were playing something.. not barely breathing, but I do not remember what.. but it was on the radio in the store (an electronics store).. I went right over and listened for the artist, and bought it on the spot.

I listened to it over, over, and over..
I spent so many nights listening to it while I would read in my bath; it was such great background music.. and at that time it was so.. well, it is so moving to me even now. I have all of his albums but the self-titled is absolutely my favorite.

This is my third summer in Seattle and last year I went to see him at the Crocodile Cafe.

I was absolutely mesmerized.. his singing/playing, and spooky in the background absolutely captured my heart. I hope spooky continues to play with him.. it was an unbelievable show. Perhaps I should go to the other board and post more there. :)

First time?

I was in a car with my girlfriend listening to the single CD "Barely Breathing" and "Home" one of my friend gave me.

I remember when we listened to "Home", it was meant for us to hear. Perfect. One of the best kisses followed, nothing more, just a great kiss. We later engraved "HOME" into promise rings we both have. She's in China right now serving a mission for our church. I'm waiting, waiting!

It was 1996 and "Barely Breathing" was on the old VH1 show Crossroads..ya'll remember that show? I saw his vdieo and cried at the beauty, bought the CD single the next day... bought the CD the day it came out, and that's what started my love for Duncan. I found out about Humming from Teen People, Phantom Moon from Late Night with Conan O' Brien, and Daylight through this website...yay for publicity!!!

Well, I don't remember the first time I ever heard Duncan, but I do remember the first time I remembered. (Does that make sense?)

Anyhow, it was probably 1998...
I knew Barely Breathing and enjoyed it as much as any other radio hit from the last few years, but it didn't have any special efect on me. Then one day, driving in my car, I heard it on the radio. For the first time, I really heard the song, you know, in a real sense. I immediately went to my local Disc-Go-Round and bought a used copy of the CD. Some poor fool made a terrible mistake in selling it.

I took my new CD home and listen to the whole thing. Duncan Sheik spoke to my soul in a way no other music has. It's not that I relate to the songs, although I do relate to many of them. It's something unlike anything else I've experienced.

I've been a fan ever since!

Thank you Duncan for speaking to my soul in a way nobody else has.

I was at home, I was feeling pretty sick, I had a bad flu, and I was flipping through the channels until I got to MTV. They had some pretty good videos on during the day. I was eating some chicken soup with crackers when the video for "Barely Breathing" came on. I thought "Gee, that guy sure dresses nice." This while I was in like 5th grade. Something in me, just beginning to tap into my creativity found his music smart and his look deep and philisophical(at least looking back on it.) It helped me forget about my illness healing me in a way I cannot believe(as his music still does to this day) After I got better I broke my piggy bank and bought his album on tape at Woolworth's. From that moment I was hooked. He's inspirational to me.

The first time I heard Duncan was when he opened for the Jars of Clay at the Town Pump in Vancouver, back in '96. I bought the CD that night at the show. Gerry wasn't playing with him yet. I had not heard Barely Breathing on the radio or anywhere yet, although I did hear it afterwards.

I've seen Duncan three more times in Vancouver since then.

I heard Barely Breathing on the radio and bought the CD. Strange for me, as I only buy 1-2 CDs a year. True. I played it to death - my husband threatened to throw it out the window if he heard it one more time...

I heard it back in '96 when my sister bought the CD because she thought "he was cute". She didn't even take it out of it's wrapper for weeks and when she did, she kicked me off the living room sound system to listen to it. I sat around sulking and complaining about how much this guy "sucked" and how she had "the worst taste in the entire world". It wasn't until "Reasons for Living" came on that I actually listened to the CD (without whining and huffing) and fell in love. So Duncan's first big hit with me was "Reasons for Living" and I just couldn't figure out why he'd released "Barely Breathing" instead. I still can't!

Way back whenever: I was on the phone "on hold" - and "She Runs Away" began playing (on the phone) when the person I was talking to came back on - I said - PUT ME BACK ON HOLD!! I just had to hear the rest of it ...and I've mesmerised ever since.

It may be kind of late to put this post on but the first time I ever heard Duncan was in '96 and I had just moved to South Carolina from Texas. My sister ordered a 12 cd for a penny thing and Duncan was one of them. She got it because she liked Barely Breathing. I had no idea who he was. She played the cd once through and I overheard it. I had to have that cd. Now my sister, sad to say can't stand Duncan, but I am completely in love. We moved back to Texas and no one here seems to know or if they do know of him they don't really like him. But I think it's because he hasn't had enough advertisement down here.
I'll be your manager for Texas Duncan!

In '96, I was going through a hard time relationship wise when that song "barely breathing" was playing on the radio. That song spoke to me and I remember thinking that "yea.. I am kidding myself pretending that this person I was with cared" and that I was being a fool waiting around for this person to change how they felt. Needless to say I am not with that person anymore.

It was in 2000. The first time I heard Duncan was in the movie Three To Tango. I liked that movie that time and enjoyed the sadness of the chorus of That Says It All. I dug, dug and dug until I found out who sang it. Then I read a lot about him, saw the video on the Internet and read a lot about Barely Breathing. Then I downloaded theses two songs and listened to them for a long time, when I had like 10 mp3s in my PC. When I had to format my HD, I lost it all but didn't mind, because I wasn't really into him. But in 2002, when a friend of mine decided to record a CD for me, I suggest these two songs. When I listened to them again I started to dig again and discovered his other songs. Now I'm trapped. But it was funny, because I didn't have an idol. And I felt weird because of that. Then I decided it would be Duncan. And I couldn't leave him anymore.

<<Rodolfo>>

PS.: Actually the first time was in Friends Soundtrack, with View From The Other Side. But I didn't know it was him when I bought in 2000 and I didn't listened to this song very much. I found out it was Duncan's only in 2002 when I was already a good fan.
