Wow the debut album boy did I play that a lot. Took it with me everywhere.Right now my fav off of it would be In the Absence of Sun. The lyrics just had a connection with my life at a certain time,ah just a beautiful song. Everytime I listen to Home it just makes me feel so good inside. One of the first albums I truly loved. "She Runs Away," for all the reasons I mentioned in my other post. :-) Good topic, Courtney! Man, I played the debut album _all the time_. At least once a day, for ages. It really kept me going. My Freshman year roommate wanted to kill me, I think--and that was '98-'99--at least two years after I'd gotten the album. My mom wanted to kill me, too! haha She still walks around the house humming "Barely Breathing" in spite of herself. ;-) Peace, Love, and Mischief, IP: Logged |

"little hands" emotionally resonates with me to the greatest depth. but as far as resonance AND pure sing along potential, "she runs away" leaves me on the verge of fainting. especially when i try to belt it out while driving. it's a wonder i haven't been arrested yet... IP: Logged |

I think my favorite song will always be Home. Whenever I'm bored I end up writing the chorus over and over. It's all over the place!! It's only cause it rings so true with me. IP: Logged |

I just had to add my input to this topic, because the one song that blew me away more than any other when I first listened to that album was "Days Go By," and I wanted to mention it here because I've never heard anyone else cite it as a particular favorite. The level of vulnerability in the song just amazes me. Whenever I need to be inspired in my own work, I listen to "Days Go By" and it reminds me that to achieve something meaningful, I have to be willing to open myself up and risk hurt and rejection. Thanks to everybody for sharing your favorites. It's so great finally to have these message boards back! Peace and joy, IP: Logged |

I'd have to say "In the Absence of the Sun" and "November" are my favorites. But "Home" always brightened my day the most . . . I really just love the first album so much, I can't really choose a song . . . I love them all . . . but those stick out the most in my mind IP: Logged |

My favorite song off Duncan's first album would have to be She Runs Away followed by November and The End of Outside. The album has not yet lost it's value after four years of ownership and it still gets major play time on my CD player. IP: Logged |

By far my favorite song of Duncan's is "She Runs Away". It's just a breathtaking song that can speak to people on so many levels. And since "Serena" hasnt been mentioned much, I have to say that it comes in a close second for me. It really doesnt sound like anything else on that album, and I love the 12 string guitar in it. Wellll....This is probably the hardest decision that I would have to make, but I can't. I LOVE every (!) song on that album. Thank Gawd, I don't own his debut album on a cassette, because I would have to keep renewing it every other month!!! IP: Logged |

My favorite is "Reasons for Living" because of the line that you see in my signature. Also, "Little Hands" is great. "November" too! (This album is one of the few I can listen to from start to finish and have no desire to skip a track.) IP: Logged |

"Little Hands" is the perfect blues song. It is entirely original, and contains ridiculous amounts of texture from the voice alone. Some phrases use word painting to an advnatage: "if its all the same" "big seduction" "wants to sleep" among others. The lyrics are universal, in a monodramatic style, and it really gets inside my head. There are few "best of genre" songs around, but "Little Hands" is the best, most pure blues song there is. As you might guess from my password, my favorite song from the first cd would have to be "She Runs Away". I can't put into words exactly why this song has touched me the way it does. Something about the guitar and Duncan's singing with great feeling is just such a breathtaking combination. If I were stranded on a deserted island for the rest of my life and could only bring one song to play over and over again, it would have to be "She Runs Away". I never tire of it. IP: Logged |

oh, i hate having to pick just one - i like all of them for different reasons. if i just had to pick only one, i think it would be days go by. i just love the way he drops his voice on the word go. yummy! i love home, because i know that feeling. i love to sing along with serena. little hands is a classic. oh, i like em all. My favorite is Reasons for Living, that one was a very personal song for me, I keep it in my journal of favorite poems. But on the lighter side, it has to be tied with Barely Breathing because that was the song that introduced me to Duncan so if I wouldn't have heard that I might not be on this message board. it's nice to see that I'm not the only one whos favorite is "reasons for living." it was one of those songs that I loved after the first couple seconds of hearing it. the melody is wonderful and the lyrics have a lot of meaning to me. and duh, i completely forgot my other favorite, "the end of outside." this song is amazing, i love its style and it has the best lyrics on the album in my opinion, i can't believe that no o ne else has said anything...also, "little hands" is heart-breakingly beautiful, the line "and all my thoughts so depraved and evil" still causes me to shiver... kris IP: Logged |

It is difficult to pick just one. For my favorite softer song, it's no doubt "Home". When I first heard it I loved it immediately, and especially now it rings true for me because my girlfriend and I have a long distance relationship, and every word fits perfect. His version of it on the promo album "Live at the Reservoir" is really cool too. "Days Go By" is a pretty close second though. And for my favorite faster song, it would have to be "Serena". My favorite used to be "Barely Breathing", with "Serena" right behind, but then I heard him do "Serena" live a couple times and both times were awesome, more edgy than the album version. -Aaron IP: Logged |

It's hard to pinpoint one song off of this album as my favorite. They've all been my favorite at one time or another. She Runs Away, In The Absense Of Sun, November , Home, Little Hands, Out Of Order. I think I will have to go with Home though because I fell in love to that song. Chris IP: Logged |

" Little Hands" is my fave. there is so many good thing about this album, especally because it is a freshman album. The thing everyone has to realize that there are other works from him. I've been to stores, talked to people, visited webstites that only talk about 'Duncan Sheik' and that's a shame because he is such a talent. "Little Hands" is so haunting, as is most of his music to me(That is what all good music will do to me). IP: Logged |

So true about people (no one here, obviously), forgetting that he has two other albums and lots of other stuff, in between. Geez--don't they realize that he only gets _better_? :-) Or is it just that as Duncan's sound gets artier, John Q. Public finds it more difficult to keep up? The reviews he's getting for Phantom Moon are far more passionate and positive than any critic's remarks on the debut, and yet the album is much less well-known to the public than either of the first two were. Definately "Little Hands"... I've had enough cut-downs from girls before, I know exactly where he's coming from... it hurts to listen to it 'cause I've been there before, but it's a nice reminescant of what my life used to be... She runs away. My favorite part in the song is before it even starts. I love the tiny breath he takes, and you can hear his hand move up, about to strum the strings. And then the first chord hits. That is my favorite part. IP: Logged |

She runs away is unquestionably the song that grabs me the most. I just love belting the high part of the chorus out, as I'm cruising in my Jeep... there is nothing better. Also as mentioned, In The Absence Of Sun is a close second. I'm surprised to hear that so many people enjoyed it as much as me. It's an excellent song. IP: Logged |
