Another great hidden track! Is there an actual title for this song? I can hear the influence of Radiohead very strongly in this tune. (Is this his fav.band? was the girl in "on her mind" wearing a rradiohead tee-shirt or Talk Talk?) I especially like the first line, I too am a scorpio (yeah, cheesy reason). IP: Logged |

Amy: The name of the hidden track is "Chimera." As for Radiohead, Duncan has been a fan of some of their CDs, espcially "OK Computer." "Kid A" and "Amnesiac," though, are two CDs that Duncan has conflicted feelings about, or he had conflicted feelings about when the topic was broached to him at a concert back in November 2001. With that in mind, I can't really say for sure whether or not Radiohead is Duncan's favorite band. Even if Radiohead was Duncan's favorite band, or even Talk Talk for that matter, no one would really know if the girl in "On Her Mind" wore a Radiohead or a Talk Talk t-shirt. I think its something that can be made up by the individual listener, a lyrical device that invites listener participation. thanks Richard for your reply. How do you know all this info? Chimera. hmm..another word to look up in my dictionary. Oh, and i know that we'll probably never know what the actual band tee-shirt was but this is how I entertain myself. *Amy IP: Logged |

Well, Chimera was originally on the play list we saw here on the site, but then it disappeared. It makes sense that it might be the title of the hidden song. That's what I thought when I heard it for the first time. ![]() -steph IP: Logged |

Chimera was a fire-breathing monster in Greek mythology. It had the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent. I love this song! Allison *sorry if this is a stupid question...(but I'll ask it anyway)...what's the purpose of a hidden track?...why not just list it? Amy: You're welcome for the reply, although I admit that I need to pay more attention to this forum. How do I know all this info.? As Steph pointed out, the only reason people know of the hidden track's title was because of the track listing that Atlantic posted on their website. I only know about some of the bands Duncan likes through reading interviews he's given. When he performed in Annapolis back in November 2001, Duncan gave some more insight to some of the music he listened to when someone asked him about Radiohead's "Kid A" and "Amnesiac." I have heard that Duncan's favorite band is 'The Grateful Dead". I think he said it at a concert. I can't really remember. It's definatelly a question I have to ask when I see him. Joel IP: Logged |

Greatful Dead, huh? I never would have thought of them. The only connection I think of between the Dead and Duncan, is the Great Expectations soundtrack. If you ever do ask him, Joel, please post us! Alright another question, are there any mythology lovers in the house? What was this fire breathing Chimera? Is there a particular story about her? I don't know if there's any purpose to hidden tracks. When I think of Duncan's hidden songs (although on Daylight it's really not that hidden) I feel like he shows a more personal side of himself. On Humming, he sings a quiet lullaby that sounds written just for you. In Chimera, he opens up, about protecting himself and feeling afraid to be vulnerable. personal stuff indeed. *amy [This message has been edited by Amy (edited September 06, 2002).] IP: Logged |

oh, as for Duncan liking the grateful dead...i think he was being sarcastic...in the Birchmere concert on my site, someone asks him about favorite bands and Jeff mentions grateful dead and duncan is kinda like "yeah, right" Its one of the "stage banter" clips, though I don't remember which one. Hi Amy...This was stolen directly from World Book encyclopedia...I think Duncan was going for the "wildly fanciful" thing! Thanks for the other info! Allison The Chimera terrorized the kingdom of Lycia. Iobates, the Lycian king, ordered the hero Bellerophon to destroy the monster. Bellerophon tamed the winged horse Pegasus with the help of a golden bridle provided by the goddess Athena. Then Bellerophon flew over the Chimera and killed it with arrows. The words chimera and chimerical are often used to describe anything that is wildly fanciful or absurd

WoW! Thanks Allison, for looking up the chimera story. Perhaps, I'll get a chance to check up on this myth a little further, it sounds interesting. as for, Duncan probably being sarcastic about liking the "Dead", I can believe that. I just can't picture Duncan wearing one of their tie dye t-shirts. *amy [This message has been edited by Amy (edited September 08, 2002).] IP: Logged |

Did anyone see Mission Impossible 2? That's where I first heard of Chimera and Belleraphon. Terrible to admit, I know, but I have a weakness for Tom Cruise and John Woo. It's a BEAUTIFUL film, if not entertaining, plus, when I heard about the Chimera track, I was not completely clueless about the meaning. ------------------ "There is no chance at all. Okay...been looking into the Chimera a bit since Richard provided me with the name of it. (Thanks again, Richard!) I think Duncan's going back even further than the Greek myth. This thing's been around since Sumerian times...check it out. Used to be a winged lion but somewhere along the lines they changed the wings to a goat's head. It was the Sumerian storm "creature" a pet of the fertility Goddess. Explains "chased by storms," though I'm not sure if the Chimera's control of the weather is in the Greek myth as well. I've quickly become obsessed with this song. My roommate Jeff too. It's really kinda funny. Anyway, that's what I know thus far... Oh, and I'm a Scorpio boy myself... Benjamin IP: Logged |

is it too late to vote for "good morning!"? that song says it all for me.... the "hidden track" is so highly personal - I've tried not to overanalyze it.... I think it's a deep autobiography. I'd like to read more.... for the record and FYI, the chimera has no relation to the scorpion or the sign of scorpio in astrology.... scorpio, however, is the most focused, and yet, most adaptable, of all the signs of the zodiac. if you read homer or the history of the peloponnesian (sp?) wars, (written by somebody_cles) there is talk of battling mythical creatures.... I seem to recall some historical treatises with reference to the chimera and a battle - belapheron is big in one of those homer books - I'll have to look it up later.... as per usual - I felt strongly moved to provide my two cents.... cheers - me had to fix those dang typos. There is some fascinating info on Chimera above this post! I love the fact that Jessica remembered it from Mission Impossible 2! It's very easy to overlook the dialouge in action movies. Rochelle, astrology happens to be a weakness of mine, a guilty pleasure. Does the same go for you? Just in case there are some who are interested, according to certified astrologers (yes, people do go to schools for this field), Scorpios are entering a beneficial time in their careers which will stay that way until next September. With Duncan's new album out, that could be a good sign. Love, IP: Logged |

Astrology is definitely one of *my* guilty pleasures. I embody the archetypical Cancerian woman - rounded, nurturing, emotional, that's me! Doesn't Semiotics deal with the study of symbols & archetypes and how they shape culture? Interesting that Duncan chose to use astrology... I wonder if he believes in those archetypes. I can definitely see the Scorpio in him. Bronwen IP: Logged |

Ok I am a total idiot ladies and gentlemen. I have Daylight, but I haven't had enough time to really listen to it as much as I'd like to. My friend also has the album and spoke of this hidden track, but did not tell me what song it is on, and none of you have either, so please for my sake, where is this track? IP: Logged |

after the climax of Shine inside, there is about a min and a half of instrumental music, 20 secs of nothingness, then Chimera starts up. Chimera lasts less than 4 minutes ![]() IP: Logged |

In case anyone wonders, "Chimera" aka "Poor Scorpio Boy" aka "The hidden Daylight track" starts at 6:24 on track 11, "Shine Inside". You can usually get directly to it Windows Media Player or your auto-play CD software. It is really, *really* interesting. I think it sounds like some of Japan's earlier stuff and even reminds me of David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees CD. Cheers ------------------ IP: Logged |

There is another definition to chimera, which I believe makes more sense in relation to the lyrics. From Merriam-Webster online: "an illusion or fabrication of the mind; especially : an unrealizable dream <a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in my prayer -- John Donne>" IP: Logged |
