and here i thought i could kind of hang out unnoticed in the phantom moon room...

well, all right, first let me say -- again -- how really touching it is to read all these messages. much, much appreciated.

yeah, i too think "the lover from hell" is great. and maybe i can answer what it's like to write with duncan just by talking about that one.

i guess i woke up one morning -- not so long ago --- in a sort of haze. as i was chanting, i was remembering a conversation he and i had had the day before about a manuscript of mine (a novel), and that led me back through the thought of...err... former lovers, i guess... and baudelaire... and the way we feed on one another's sadness...

and i just ended up writing a lyric. it was unplanned. i worked on it through the morning, then ended up at duncan's -- again, unexpectedly -- to listen to one of the songs from his new pop record with him. and after hours of talk, and listening to different songs, and work on spring awakening, and whatever else, i was about to go and just said, "oh, this morning i wrote this thing."

and i handed him the lyric across the table, and he read it through, kind of counting it out to himself. and then he smiled and said, "this is a no-brainer", picked up his guitar and started strumming through the song. and to me it sounded like something i already remembered -- nothing at all like what i'd had in my head, but at the same time a fulfillment of something deep i'd felt about things -- if that makes any sense. strains of prokofiev...

as i listened to him pick out a tune to the words, i'd go -- "oh, we better do 'somehow' there, instead of ' of course'". and an hour later -- maybe less -- we had the song. and a few days later he played it live on ground zero, while i stood there listening.

now, as far as my mailing address, probably best to send things c/o my theatre agent:
Helen Merrill Ltd., 295 Lafayette Street, Ste. 915, New York, NY 10012-2700.

sorry about the confusion re: william morris, etc. i've had, and still have, a bunch of representatives for the different parts of my career.

but who wouldn't want to get a four-leaf clover? amazing. and yes, accoustic junkie, i'd love to see what you've done with longing town.

and i'm sorry, umbrage isn't in print yet. (yes, angee, carbondale dreams is the only one so far.) don't know if you can wrangle a copy out of my agent -- maybe. things are afoot for the film, and i would love nothing more than to come do the play in london. i did work on a cool production of the tempest there, year before last.

well, i'm sure i'm still forgetting a number of questions, but god knows this is long enough.

and thanks again,

s

How about handing Duncan some more of your lyrics?

Just wanted to say hello and hope all is well with you.

We have not heard from you in a long time Steven,

Michele

Were you referring to "Les Fleurs du Mal" ?
