Everyone, post the title of your favorite song from the newly-released "Phantom Moon" album...

Currently, I am bordering on the obsessive with "Mouth on Fire".

I personally love all of Phantom Moon, and if I have to play favorites, it's a tie...The Wilderness is deeply prophetic and calm to me, sort of like another duncan favorite of mine, Nichiren. I love the soft piano and the ambiguity of the lyrics, along with the strings. Lyrically though, my favorite might be Lo and Behold. When I first heard it, I was completely blown away by it's beauty and mood setting lyrics, I still wonder what it's about though I have my theories. But like I said, the whole album is great, and although I am thrilled that a new album akin to his self titled cd and humming is coming out first, a phantom moon 2 will also be wonderful. Maybe next time, duncan will co-write the lyrics of the next phantom moon? I think that would be great.

Well, it's a cross between "The Winds That Blow" and "Sad Stephen's Song."
I love the seductive, rocking feel of "winds." I love the idea of a book waiting to see "will you turn its leaves,/ With all the winds that blow," blending nature with intellect.
And Sad Stephen's Song is just brilliant. I love the repeating perfect-fifth on acoustic guitar. Give it this static, timeless feel that adds to the dream imagery that occurs lyrically. Gorgeous, gorgeous song.

Peace, Love, and Mischief,
Vanessa

Vanessa, I totally agree with you about "Sad Stephen's Song".... although I could never put my finger on exactly what it was about the guitar that caught my attention. Thank you for that. Any other thoughts about the song? I adore the imagery and dreamlike quality of it. I would have to say that it is definitely my favorite. Beyond it, "The Winds That Blow". Glad everyone's enjoying the new album so much, too :) It's wonderful to hear all these positive comments. Does anyone agree that it's similar to the first in any way?

I'm right there with ya, Vanessa! Torn between Winds that Blow and Sad Stephen's Song... but I also enjoy Longing Town and Wilderness... so hard to choose!

I can't decide, because it keeps changing, but for now Mouth on Fire, Longing Town, and Mirror in the Heart.

you know, longing town was the last song we did, and the only one for which i actually wrote to duncan's music. so for me, beneath the words there'll always be the sound of duncan humming what we called "twilight song".

gotta go with that as my fave.

i hate having to pick only one. it's so hard. i like them all for different reasons... i love how in the winds that blow, everything sorrows - the stars, books, the window. i love the line in longing town - wind tell her lightly, all that we might be - that is just so pretty... if i had to pick a favorite it would be requiescat. i love the lyrics, and the music. they marry together so well. and as i have said many times, the bell is my favorite part. i love simplicity. it is so simple, yet so perfect.

Without a doubt, every song on Phantom Moon is great. If I had to choose my favorite, I'd choose — hinting from my username — "Time and Good Fortune." I really like the beat and Duncan's "Johnny Cash voice" (read the launch.com interview). The banjo in the bridge is great and so subliminal.

Every song is equally perfect. I like the stand-up bass which adds a jazz-like feel to the songs. And of course I like Bill Frissel's jazz guitar on "Far Away." It would have been even greater if Pat Metheny played Frissel's part but they're both great jazz guitarists either way. The whole album seems to have a folk/country/jazz/pop feel to it and those genres are my favorite. Phantom Moon is so wonderfully arranged and creative — very organic.

right now, mouth on fire. he uses such a full range of his voice. i love the soothing sound of the lower range, the passion in the mid range, and of course the sweetness in those high notes. listening to it makes me feel uplifted for some reason. his voice makes me smile.

I can't pick a favorite. But I can narrow it down to four! In no particular order, because they are all spectacular, Longing Town, The Winds That Blow, Mouth On Fire,Song, and Far Away. The last one to really "hit me" of these was Far Away. Something about the distance, the wanting, the pain at maybe wondering what might have been--has struck me. That and the utter sincerity and feeling which Duncan's amazing vocals provide. Yes, the guitar is pretty great, too in that song.

I like The Winds that Blow. My favorite Duncan song of all time though is Songbird (even though it's not on Phantom Moon).

“Brought the earth my seed, but it would not flower.” Heart palpitations. Such vivid imagery. And after the unfulfilled desire…disappointment…I hear him floating up to the heavens (or Eagle Peak)...resigning…as he whispers the last lines…in the dream or in the fire…mouth on fire...

“This is how my arms burn, that used to hold her tight until the dawn.” Reminds me of a character in a Robert Olin Butler novel. At a US camp during the Vietnam war, the narrator watches this Vietnamese soldier who is defecting as they view a movie and at one point a woman appears on the screen and the Vietnamese soldier reaches his arms up as if to recall the embrace of his wife. The longing, the longing so beautifully captured in that story and in this song.

Is it possible to only have one favorite??? I really cannot pick just one: I love All the Winds that Blow, This is How My Heart Heard, Mirror in the Heart, Sad Stephen's Song, Far Away, Requiescat.

Pretty much the whole album.

Thank you Duncan and Steven for such a wonderful collaboration of poetry and music.

Since buying the album a few days ago, Ive listened to it about a thousand times it seems. I think my favorites change by the hour. First it was Mr. Chess, the it was Mirror in the Heart, and now the song that follows me everywhere is Mouth on Fire. Who knows what it will be tomorrow.

The best albums tend to be like this. Its more of a rollercoaster ride than just buying an album because of a single which ends up being the only song you like on the album.

Yo guys. I finally have arrived. I know, I know. You all want to talk to me at once, but hold on and let me speak (write). Anyway, I love Longing Town and Winds That Blow. I enjoyed reading Mr. Sater's post. That was fun! The whole album is beautiful, though.

Far Away...My bf just moved to Cali, and he is also a Duncan Freak (actually I can credit him with introducing me to the beautiful music) and that song hits the nail on the head.....

Truely amazing. Every time I hear it, I picture an old couple dancing together in the Starlight Lounge, or the last dance at a prom back in the 50's.....

I am also obsessing like Courtney over Mouth On Fire....

I'm gonna have to go with Mouth on Fire for this one. I love it when Duncan rocks out. I like Mr. Chess a lot too, for that part when Duncan sings just with the piano. It's so hard to keep myself from singing along in the bus on the way to classes. I could just imagine a bus full of college kids staring at me. Eeep.

The whole album is great. I love the fact that is primarily acoustic. It gives it a very warm and simple feeling, but at the same time very sophisticated and intelligent. Anyway my favorite songs are Mouth on Fire and This Is How My Heart Heard.

Greetings,

I'm new here. I bought Phantom Moon when I was on holiday in New York the week before last and I now stand converted. It has the beautiful, pure wistfulness that I have searched so long for in music. My favourite tracks would have to be 'Sad Stephen's Song', 'This is How My Heart Heard' and 'Time and Good Fortune'. You don't know how annoyed I am that I missed the London gig...

My favorite tracks off the album are undoubtedly the transition between The Wilderness Part I and Longing Town; I think the fluid transition of the two, and how the guitar connects the two almost to the point where you don't tell it's a different song, is absolutely captivating (and for those who want an amazing experience, listen to it in pitch blackness, and a loud volume, it truly is an absorbing experience.) Close seconds are "Far Away," "This Is How My Heart Heard," and "Lo and Behold."

I agree with swingheil, Mirror In the Heart, can't get enough. I'm not too fond of Sad Stephen's Song, the lyrics are a little too cheezy methinks. Like *too* pretty or something?

"Winds that Blow" a close second.

I'd have to go with "The Winds that Blow" or "Time and Good Fortune." I hate picking a favorite, because I have to leave off songs like "Longing Town" and "Sad Steven's Song," which is just wrong . . . such an amazingly great piece of music. Although, I've come to expect this much from Duncan . . .he's simply that good. Keep it real

There are many songs to like on Phantom Moon. But a favorite is too hard. I'll go with two for now. Longing Town--if I leave the room for a minute and don't hear it from the beginning, I have to start it over. (And I would have loved to hear Duncan humming the tune before it found words) This is How My Heart Heard--"And how I shed such tears but never cry" Wow. It is a powerful piece of poetry.

Steven, thank you for all of your beautiful expressions.

Peace,
Niki

Hey everyone. It's soooooo hard to pick a favorite song from a CD that has so many perfect tracks on it. But if I were forced to choose, I would definitely go with Mouth on Fire. That song is the definition of passion. To me, it's all about giving yourself to the world, but getting nothing in return for your hard work. The lyrics that Steven Sater wrote and the way Duncan sings them take me to a higher state of mind every time I give the track a listen. But the ultimate treat is to see Duncan sing this masterpiece live. When he sings it live, he really gets into it. His voice, the movement of his body and his facial expressions all positively ooze passion and longing. Especially in the closing lyrics of the song when Duncan softly brings his voice to a nice, high not and croons, "Where Poetry?" It gives me chills every time I hear it. I could go on for days, but I'll just stop for now

Cheers,
Sam

Just a little tid bit, but "Requiescat" almost made cry when I was listening to it after my Spartan basketball team lost to Arizona. A little strange since I'm not moved too much by sports...way to go Duncan and Steven.

It's so wonderful to read ALL of these expressions of what us listeners think and feel. How we are all moved.
