THE EARLY YEARS
November, 1969 Duncan Sheik makes debut appearance at a Montclair, New
Jersey maternity ward
1970 The Beatles break up
1970 Roland Barthes S/Z is published
1972 Nick Drake releases PINK MOON and world fails to notice
1975 Duncan enters elementary school as cartoons dominate thoughts
THOSE NUTTY ADOLESCENT YEARS
1983 Duncan enters boarding school, where he has all his musical equipment
confiscated by school administration types for playing too loud
1985 Duncan purchases The Smiths MEAT IS MURDER and Depeche Modes
SOME GREAT REWARD; turns on to New Orders LOW-LIFE and THE HURTING by
Tears For Fears
1986 Duncan purchases Talk Talks THE COLOUR OF SPRING, along with
albums by The Blue Nile, David Sylvian, and Cocteau Twins
THE UNIVERSITY YEARS
1991-1992 While at Brown University, Duncan spends a year playing in Liz &
Lisa, a band whose membership includes Lisa Loeb, before heading out on his
own
May, 1992 Graduation from Brown University; earns degree in Semiotics
under the instruction of George P. Landow (Congrats!)
Summer, 1992 Duncans solo demo tape makes its way into music industry
circles, where it travels in circles
THE ATLANTIC YEARS
1994
Duncan signs to Atlantic Records (Cheers !)
1995
Recording sessions with producer Rupert Hine (Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Tina
Turner, Rush, Robert Palmer) get underway at studios in France and England;
discovers Champagne and vinegar fries dont mix
1996
May 3rd Duncan hits the road with Jewel on the occasion of her first major
headlining tour; the tour his first-ever national jaunt coincides with the
release of Barely Breathing, his debut single, to radio
May 16th Atlantic Records presents live Internet broadcast of performances
by Jewel and Duncan Sheik from New York Citys Irving Plaza
June 4th DUNCAN SHEIK is released. In its four-star review, Rolling
Stone writes, This album is a defiant debut beautiful and benevolent of
spirit
June Duncan makes network television debut on Late Night With Conan
OBrien
Summer Duncan supports U.S. tour with Jars of Clay
September On the road again; Sheik tours U.S., this time as special guest
of Frente
1997
January 7 Duncan discusses Semiology with Regis following his performance
on Live! Regis & Kathie Lee
February DUNCAN SHEIK hits #1 on SoundScans Alternative New Artist

March In The Absence Of Sun, a track from DUNCAN SHEIK, is included on
the Billboard 200 top 25-charting The Saint soundtrack
March 3rd (Hey kids!) Duncan makes debut on Late Show With David

March 22nd DUNCAN SHEIK hits #1 on Billboards Heatseekers chart
Spring Sheik embarks on first U.S. headlining tour
August 27 DUNCAN SHEIK certified RIAA gold
Late summer, 1997 Sheik and his band on tour with Shawn Colvin
December 13th Barely Breathing spends week #55 on Billboard Hot 100;a,
single is the fourth longest-running in the charts forty-year history
1998
January Duncans Barely Breathing earns Grammy Award nomination in
Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category
January 6th Atlantic releases Great Expectations soundtrack album, which
goes on to hit RIAA gold with a little help from Duncans new Wishful
Thinking track
May Sessions begin in Spain with Rupert Hine on HUMMING; much sangria
and tapas are consumed
September 8th Bite Your Tongue, the new albums first single, is
welcomed to radio as the #1 most-added track at Triple-A stations across the
country
October 4th Stephen Holden of The New York Times previews the new album:
In the late-90s garbage heap of one-hit wonders and hip-hoppers whose
samplings of the past sound more like liscensed theft than creative recycling,
most pop nowadays is as disposable as a Big Mac wrapper. Hardly anyone is
talking about art. But Mr. Sheiks beautifully orchestrated meditations
suggest that pop can still aspire to a lofty, searching classicism.
