OK, I am on my way to a party 40 minutes away from my house, I was running a little early so I decide to get some food, I went to Carl's @#*%^%& Jr. There were 2 cars in front of me, I order my food, and I was stuck for 23 minutes, the cars are starting to pile behind me, and I have nowhere to go. Finally People start backing out of the drive through (Yes I did not get my food) So I did the same, now I am racing down the street hungry and LATE!!. I live in a wonderful town, quiet, pretty, green, and yes the best part, the average age is 58, yes it's a retirement community, most of the people driving on the street are 90 and they all drive brand new Cadillac’s and Mercedes, that are to big for them because they are all shrinking (like we all know happens after people turn 60) and can not see out the windshield, so what do they do...They go 25mph on a 50mph and Yes I got every single red light there is. Needless to say I was about 40 minutes late and when I finally arrived at my destination...There was nobody at the house. Now I like to think that I don't have mentally challenge friends and someone gave me the wrong address, so I called them and yes they decided to move the party to another house and yes they called me but as luck would have it, my cell phone did not ring, it took a message. Now I am 1 hour away from the party and I am VERY ANGRY, so I go back home and I say to my self " It's ok, things like this happen, no big deal, it's Oscar nigh I'll just get a bottle of wine and DRINK IT BY MY SELF BECAUSE MY GIRLFRIEND IS WORKING UNTIL 11:PM, but hey it's ok, things like this happen, no big deal" So am watching the Oscars and the only awards I really care about is Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Movie, the awards where scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30pm (pacific time) so there I am, It' is 8:03pm, and the only awards left are?........ Yes that's right, Actor, Director, and Movie - I know this is very difficult to believe but trust me, you will believe me when you see the headline that says I committed suicide by eating a lot of oranges (I know it's weird but it's the only weapon I could think of at the moment)- and my cable died. It is 10:23pm and my cable is still gone.

I know you guys probably think that I am making a storm in a glass of water.

Sorry just wanted to get that out of my head.

Anyway how was your Sunday March 24 2002?

awww...that's terrible! I feel bad. I've had days like that. A lot of my bad days involve work. hehe. I watched the Oscars last night. I was pretty pleased, but I think Russell Crowe should have one best actor. I confess I haven't seen Training Day, so maybe I should before I say anything more on the subject. But I would have liked to see Sting win. Yeah yeah, Randy Newman gets nominated and never wins, but he could have won next year! He's always on the ballot! He would have won eventually! Susan Lucci won!

Be glad you did not watch the Oscars they sucked my butt!! And Whoppee, I can pass gas and be funnier, was her point to slam everyone who came on stage? At one point I thought she had forgotten to take off her robe (the black and white disaster).

I still have yet to figure out how A Beautiful Mind won anything, I never saw it, it could have been a fine movie, but I can also reasonably believe it was in no way an artistic masterpiece, like Moulin Rouge. Just judging by the subject matter you know it was not Earth shattering. Let's face it the subject could have been a made for TV Sunday night movie, or maybe shove it on the Biography channel. I Moulin Rouge was brilliantly artistic and creative, the fact Baz was not even nominated for Best Director is shite. Ron Howard, oh yes I look at him and think directive visionary. So he filmed it chronologically, that was only so Russell Crow would not get confused. As for Halle winning, love her or hate her Nicole Kidman deserved that award, not just for Moulin Rouge, but her entire body of work over the past year. And don't say that it is to be based on a single movie, in that case Denzel would not have won, he won for all the times he has been slighted. Not that Denzel does not deserve an award, he does, but to claim it was based on Training Day? Why not wait a year, give him one for John Q? Randy Newman, anyone ever think he does not win because 20 years ago he came up with a formula of how to write a song for a movie and has not moved from it since then?

Last year was a shitty year for movies, Hollywood came out with a ton of mass produced crap.

And JLo's dress, that cotton candy disater, hello was she heading to a senior prom after? And Gwyenth, did she look in a mirror? Her breasts were all over the place and the top was not form fitting and gave the illusion of rolls of excess skin moving about. Jennifer Connelly, for a nice looking woman she was obviously trying to show her breasts are saggy, because that dress was way far down, yet was not showing anything.

I on the other hand still haven't seen Moulin Rouge, so I can't claim to know much about it. The music, I know, is great (we played a few songs as our showtunes this year in marching band). I shall locate a copy of it and get back to you. Then I need to see Monsterz Ball and see if it really is as good as they say...Jenn, your response was fantastic, by the way. I think I successfully ruined this topic by talking about the Oscars...but hey, Jenn gave a fierce response. And some people would say the Oscars is a day from hell....

I think that Halle Berry deserved her award for Best Actress. She was phenomenal in Monster's Ball, she was by far the best actress hands down. I was shocked when she won, but very happy. Denzel was very good in Training Day, he also deserved his Oscar. I think that the right people won their awards.

For those of you have not seen Moulin Rouge (which should be a crime, although I admit I have not seen it this week, each time I watch it I become more taken in by it's beauty). Not in years has a movie been made which could possibly compare to its orginiality. The entire production was spectacular, and it was clearly a production. Perhaps Baz Luhrman's fault was he took a step outside of the box, in which Hollywood operates, he pushed the boundries of creativity; it is just truly a shame that stuffed shirts can not recognize actual talent it took to make that movie. They may speak about awarding creativity in reality they want to same old thing in which they are comfortable repackaged for mass consumption. It was more comparable to watching a stage show than a movie. But of course until viewers begin to expect people to push boundries we will be stuck with the same formulated crap. I will admit that the storyline for Moulin Rouge was formula, boy meets girl, they fall in love, girl is promised to someone else, girl dies, nothing new there, but it was the presentation that was new and exciting. The camera work and the use of colours, both costume and set, blended with the music and over the top dance numbers to form a body of work that was visually stimulating. It was not surprising that it won both costume design and art direction.

Nicole Kidman was wonderful. Halle is nails on a chalk board to me, she is beautiful, but beautiful does not equate talent, drawing a crowd to stare at one's breasts does not make that person a good actress. I have never seen her in a movie that I have enjoyed. I admit I did not see Monster's Ball, because I could not inflict Halle and Billy Bob on myself; in addition everyone I know who had seen it had either walked out or deeply considered leaving. Calling it 'predictable'and full of gratuitous sex and violence.

Nicole Kidman however, deserved that Oscar, not only for her stunning performance in Moulin Rouge, but all around proving she is a superior actress. The role of Satine itself was complex beyond anything I have seen in years, and she sang and danced. I admit I have liked Nicole Kidman from way back, I can not recall ever seeing Nicole in a movie that I have not enjoyed.

Judging on the way this years Oscars went, I tell you folks, don't count out "Crossroads" for next year.

Halle Berry did not recieve the Oscar for being beautiful, she received the Oscar for the stellar performance she gave in Monsters Ball. She was not glamorous in Monsters Ball, she was plain. Even most of the critics said that she deserved the Oscar but did not think she would get it because Monsters Ball was a small low budget film and it did not have the hype that Moulon Rouge did. Halle has talent, not just beauty. Everyone has their own opinions and that is what makes life interesting. I personally dont think that Nicole Kidman is a particularly great actress, but that is just me.

I just believe that Halle recieves attention not for her acting but her beauty, any role I have seen her in she is medicore to horrible, granted she often has chosen awful roles in awful movies (if anyone defends Swordfish I will scream), I just can not see she got a sudden boast of talent in one movie.

The only thing I heard the press even speak of concerning Monster's Ball was in regards to nudity and Halle's body, tell me that is not how they tried to sell the movie, because to be honest for the longest time I had no clue what it was even about.

I saw "Moulin Rouge", and I thought it was a mastepiece of crap. Yes it had good acting and it was a good concept, but the script was trash. Nicole can act but her performance was better in "The Others". Russel is a great actor and should have won the oscar this year for his performance in "A Beautiful Mind" Yes, Denzel was great in "Training Day", but it was no "Malcom X" performance, I agree he was due for an oscar but not this year. A little interesting fact about the osars, Woody Allens speech was improv. No one new he was there exept for backstage staff, and the telepromter who happens to be a friend of mine, my friend also said that Tom Cruise's speech was written for him, (you know all that crap about a friend of him asking what they should do about performing and entertaining, and him saying "More than ever") k' bye.

Fine I happen to have enjoyed the script, but the costumes, setting, and camerawork was fantasic, visually it was a masterpiece. Not to mention the music, and an attempt to revive the genre of musicals. I just think that the ability to think out side of the box should be rewarded, although that is a lot to ask, when society as a whole tends to stick with what is comfortable and familiar. Moulin Rouge was original, using someone's actual life story as a movie is not orginal in the least (Turn on CBS any Sunday night), it is actually rather boring, I see movies to be taken away, if I want a look into other people's lives I will watch the Biography channel.

We are all critics to our own taste, and I will say Jen, that you make a very good point, I don't enjoy movies that are based on true stories myself, but I do celebrate the talent and the work an actor displays. I will admit that I am exited about musicals coming back to film, and Moulin Rouge, gave us a taste of the industry can do.

But the question is truly how much will the musical genre be revived when there is such a small percentage that supports it. I think the over sight of Baz Luhrman to even be nominated, for director, (not saying he had to win); shows that there is perhaps not that interest in the musical. I know I personally saw it four times in the theatre, once on DVD and I bought the video two weeks ago and have watched it three times since then (I am planning an evening of Moulin with a friend this weekend as well) shows I loved it, but most people I know were unwilling to give it a chance.

I think the movie still made an impact, though it didn't get recognized as much as some people think it should have been. Jenn, you said you have seen it several times, and I know there are other people who have seen it several times as well. The idea is out there, and I think people accepted it. I don't know the numbers, but didn't it do pretty well financially? hold on. I'll check on the IMDb...I still don't know, but I got the impression that it had done pretty well.

To Die For, I thought it was so funny, in a quirky non-mainstream type way...With Illeana Douglas like skating over her body in the ice, what a hoot!

Sorry not even recieving Russell Crowe's salary for A Beautiful Mind would make me see it. And I think I can judge it based on that, because I am known for seeing pure crap on screen, I mean stuff that someone should be shot for making, which causes actual physical pain to watch, and I know that A Beautiful Mind just looks to horrible for even me to see.

What one person sees as crap, is great to another person. Obviously A Beautiful Mind did not cause physical pain to see or it would not have been nominated. Remember, everyone has thier own opinion of what they think is good. No one should be made to feel stupid or that they have no taste if they like certain things. Let's just leave it at that.

Poe,
I think the magic number is 30. As soon as you post that many times, you become a senior member. Don't worry, though. At 32, you are still a spring chicken compared to some of us. I shall not mention any names, but their initials are J.E.N.N., B.W., W.O.L.F....

Aileen, I did not say anyone was stupid for liking A Beautiful Mind, I understand it might appeal to some people, just as Glitter appealed to some people. That does not stop it from being crap in my mind, and the fact some people might like it should not prevent me from being able to express my opinion.
