Hey everyone....

Don't sweat "On a High" if it seems too "pop" for your taste. Give it a minute. More to the point, wait and listen to the whole record and then give me your two cents. It will all make more sense when you hear it in context.

Peace and love

I actually really like the song,Duncan...it may have more of a "pop" sound, but I find it uplifting and the lyrics still have integrity. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album! All the best to you.

I think an occasional mainstream pop song is great, especially to contrast the contemplative, almost ethereal quality of Phantom Moon. Your ability to create quality material regardless of assigned genre and audience is what's most admirable. I'm genuinely impressed with the diversity in your recordings, and with the wide group of people to whom you appeal. Congrats . . . and thanks for something new to enjoy!

Hi Duncan,

I have to admit that, when I initially heard "On A High," I wondered what you were doing. However, by the time you hit the first chorus, the song started to grow on me. I like "On A High" now, especially the musical variation of "Far Away" that occurs towards the end of the song.

Good job, Duncan. I'm really looking forward to hearing "Daylight."

Hi Duncan,
i've been looking at the tracklisting and trying to guess what the songs are about from their titles (i'm seeing a mix of love and philosophy)... but context adds a whole new dimension to the puzzle...hmmmm, i wish August 27th would get here faster...

peace and love to you too,
Cici

P.S. "On A High" is actually pretty clever. Just like you, Mr. Sheik

Duncan,
I love the song! The one thing that I love about your music is the diversity of it all. There are many artists out there that every song sounds alike. I am excited to hear the new cd, wish it would have come out closer to the beginning of the month. (It would have made a wonderful birthday present, lol.) But, a belated birthday present is better than none (just kidding). I am also looking forward to seeing live, any idea when that might happen?

Well, again "On A High" is a great song and looking forward to hearing the rest of the cd. Take care and hope to see you out touring soon.

Lots of love and best wishes,

Hey Duncan!
Your song is great and even though it's "pop," variation is good;otherwise music in general would get too blah with the same sounds all the time. I can't wait to hear the album and see some concerts! Best of luck and we'll all be waiting for august 27th to role around.

Hi Duncan!

Hey, I'm not sweating it! The song is great and I am eargerly waiting to hear the whole album.
Despite the "poppy", (for lack of a better word), melody, the lyrics offer some inspiration.
You always deliver your work with sincerity. Thanks for writing to us. I hope to see you on your next tour.

Much Love,
Amy

Hey Duncan,

On A High is a really good song. I especially like the beats used in these first two songs I've heard thus far(momento, on a high). Oh yeah, that electric slide immediately preceding the chorus in "On A High" is the $hit.

From a listener's perspective, I think that doing a more modern record seems appropriate in a progressive sense. Like myself, I enjoy it when artists shake it up a little.

Anyway, much love and good luck with the upcoming release. It looks like it's going to be very successful.

later,
Grant

Hello Duncan!
I'm so glad to hear a song of yours on the radio again (I think I jumped up in the air when I heard a voice on the radio say "...a new one from Duncan Sheik")! I love your music, and I like "On a High" a lot (I was humming it all day). I can't wait to hear the rest of your new album!
All the Best,
Stacy

So the chorus is very POP sounding.....big whoop. The rest of the lyrics are Duncan Sheik stamped and sealed.

The guitar you signed for me is hanging about 2 feet from my head right now along with a framed set of photos from when you and Gerrt made a clutzy college kid feel welcome in your post-concert lounging room at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on april 9th 2001 (first stop on the Phantom Moon tour) and again at the Rave in Milwaukee on Aug 31st 2001 (one of the last stops)

DS - its been a long time and I am really looking forward to the new disc !
Is Atlantic releasing it as a retail single too? Tell David I said hello ! I sent him
email but it bounced.

I have to agree with the comment that if more current music was/is as good as "On A High," I would be more willing to listen to radio and watch MTV more frequently.
The new single is Barely Breathing calibur but then again, Duncan has never done anything wrong in my opinion. This tune has
lyrics that can easily be sung, its catchy and you can dance to it - appealing more to
the mainstream. Its been my opinion that
DS's music/lyrics have been above the average
person's ability to comprehend and this one
will appeal to a wider audience. Good for you
Duncan.

I haven't heard it yet, Duncan. The radio stations out here in St. Paul are all Clear Channel, and they don't play anything new. Hopefully I will hear it before the CD comes out.

It doesn't really matter if WE like it. It matters more if YOU like it.

Take care,

Carly

Whether it is "pop" or whatever you want to call it, your new song rocks!!! I cannot wait for the new album!!! Good job, Duncan. Now, all I have to do is write the radio stations in the D.C. area and tell them to start playing your song!!! They play "Barely Breathing" enough around here, but it's time for something new. Let the countdown begin

Cheers,
Sam

Hi Duncan. After such a long absence..... it is so very great to hear you. Your new song is beautiful and I certainly cannot wait to hear the new CD as soon as possible. We are all very excited about it's release and of course to hear what you have been thinking and up to. Hope that these months of hard work and labor will provide much peace and contentment to you. Hopefully you'll be touring again soon. It's been about 6 months since we've seen you. (Way too long Duncan) You know good spiritual friends are always with you no matter what. Hope life has been good to you these months and that your heart is at much peace.
Love always, Michele

Thanks to Tdoglovin and HeRunsAway for your help.

I heard "On a High", and it sounds like another pop song "IF" you only listen to the beats. The lyrics however, are much more meaningful than any pop song I've heard.

Congrats to Duncan for bringing insightfulness and originality to the "pop" world.

It's being played on WXPN in Philly Duncan.
That seems to be the only station around here that plays intelligent, new, diverse, creative non-commercial music.

Duncan,
What a great track!!
I just found it on the atlanticrecords website...thank god.
I have not heard the track here in los angeles yet.
I love the fact that you worked with Patrick Leonard. I love the music he did with Madonna.
As usual, you are so full of talent. I like the fact that this record is a little more upbeat!
By the way, I love your track with Howard Jones "Someone You Need". It is such a great compilation and you sound so amazing!
I hope to see you on tour very soon. I have always seen you at Bimbos in San Francisco (brought you a peach rose once!) and I just saw you 14 months ago in San Juan Capistrano and got a great picture with you.
I wish you the best success ever.
Wish I could see your play in New York. I am sure the music is incredible!!
All my love,
"Serena"
(Shane)

dude, seriously, what are you worried about? unless you appear on the cover of "stuff" in a sincerely misguided attempt to look like jennifer lopez (a la sheryl crow), i think there's pretty much *no chance* you'll ever alienate your audience. on the other hand, if you can shoot bullets out your chest and make your head explode (a la britney), well, you really should start doing that at your shows because that would be pretty cool....

ha ha... anyways, to many of us, pop <> evil. that's a misconception. good pop is just as masterful as anything else. i dunno, i thought ken andrews's "shifting skin" was pretty cool and clever and so is grant lee phillips's "mobilize." i played "spring released" for 4 hours one day... and my stereo was happy to do it.

speaking of addiction, i just made a "pisces mix" CD for my friend (a very late b-day present) and there you are ("everyone, everywhere"), right between the verve's "bittersweet symphony" and "cherish" by the association.

alrighty, blah, blah, blah... just know that your soul is in no way tainted for doing something "accessible" or that makes people wanna dance. it's all good--really!

have fun on leno!!

best,
dp

what can i say? i have been playing "ON A HIGH" over and over again for at least an hour! at first i admit it sounded a little pop-y, but that didn't stop me from falling in love!! after listening to the first verse, and hearing what you had written, the SAME feeling that came over me as a 10 year old back in 1996 when i first heard BARELY BREATHING.. came over me for the first time in six years.. and ONCE AGAIN my breath was taken away!!

your talent is boundless. i cant wait until the day finally comes and i see you perform at a venue that hopefully isn't 21+ like your last show here in philly. (if not then i guess i'll be getting a fake id!) anyway duncan, i grew up on your music and i really think this new album is going to appeal to a much larger group of people.. possibly the people who arent as openminded as us longterm fans, and need that sort of techno-y popness in the beat to really open their ears. but of course we all know that they will be hooked by the lyrics instantly.

just please do me a favour and go on tour asap make sure you hit the philadelphia or vegas areas (my 2 homes). and ive been calling stations here nonstop (esp. hits 95.7 as theyre the only station still playing barely breathing hehe)... hopefully they will get "on a high" soon. keep it up and i will be first in line at tower records to get your cd august 27!!!!!!

(ps - thumbs down is just for attention !hahaaa)
