I was just wondering if anyone remembers the first time they heard Duncan. Where they were, what they were doing, etc. It's such a vivid memory for me. I was on a road trip with my family last August. My sister had had his first CD since 96', but I was 12 so it didn't really interest me. Anyway, I was at a point where I had listened to pretty much ever CD she and I owned, so I pop his in. I couldn't stop listening to it. I played it over and over again for 6 or 7 hours. We were driving through the Bad Lands in Utah I think it was, and the sky was grey but glowing cause the sun was setting, and these huge thunder heads were coming in against all the giant red cliffs. It was beautiful in an odd, peacful, sad sort of way, kind of like his music and I was hooked.

The first time i heard Duncan he was 10 feet infront of me. The moment he opened his mouth and closed his eyes i fell in love. Duncan played at this place in st pete fl where all the punk rock bands play its an old broken down theatre and they put out lawn chairs in rows i was 3 back in the middle Duncan wouldn't open his eyes when he sang it was almost like he had to invision every chord and word in his mind to be sure it was perfect. and that it was. after the show i went directly to walmart and bought the CD which never left my cd player for nearly a month. Sadly it took him 4 years to get back to florida.DSerena IP: Logged |

I don't remember. To tell you the truth I think I picked up the first album without a listen at all. Purely on a whim. *shudders* Creepy huh? IP: Logged |

The first time i heard him, i didnt really like him. He was kinda mellow and just not groovy as my beloved Dave Matthews. I was 15. The second time i listened, i just remember the end of outside, and just being amazed that he had to be buddhist. He had to be!! There was no other place to get ideas like this. I was just amazed at the complexity of his music. But it was all so simple. It was all 3 minutes long. I remember having a long day, a long week, a long sadness. He just moved me. IP: Logged |

So I can't remember the exact first time I heard him, but I remember "Barely Breathing" just making my skin tingle. For a few weeks I was trying hard to find out who this band/person was because I NEEDED the CD; just had to hear more of that voice! A few days later, my best friend at the time was like, "Yeah, I found out who does that breathing song." "WHO???" I asked, eager for a name...any name. "Someone named Drunken Sheep? Maybe I didn't hear it right." No, she did not hear it right! So I will always remember my friend and Drunken Sheep whenever I listen to his first album. Sometimes I still refer to him that way, just because it makes me smile. I must say though, that that CD did not leave my CD player for roughly.... a year? (I have a tendency to do that... I had Better Than Ezra's "How Does Your Garden Grow" in my player for over a year too, lol.) Even my cat (may he rest in peace) liked that CD in particular. It's the only one that would soothe him. Fond, fond memories! IP: Logged |

I don't remember the first time I heard "Barely Breathing," but I do remember a certain 4-hour round-trip drive to a job interview when the song was really getting popular. I was heading to Indianapolis, Indiana, and was able to get a gazillion different radio stations, and they were all playing the song so much that when it ended on one station I could flip and find it almost immediately on another. I spent that entire trip singing that song. It's still one of my favorites. Be good, Big John IP: Logged |

And just as an addendum, I agree with neelyohara: Better Than Ezra's "How Does Your Garden Grow?" is a masterpiece, and I think their new album, "Closer," is even better. [This message has been edited by big john (edited October 12, 2001).] IP: Logged |

i thought barely breathing was sung by a country singer when i first heard it on air. i thought the song was okay, but not really outstanding. then i saw his pic in the paper and thought he looked a bit too nice, not cowboyish at all. then the review of his first album was published and it was criticaaly acclaimed and prompted me to buy his album. i was 14 then and fell deeply in love with his music. it was all i played during the stressfull time of the important lower form examination. he actually helped me scored straight a's.love him? to pieces. love, IP: Logged |

The first time I heard Duncan's music was a few years ago. I wasn't working over the summer that year. Actually I think it may have been my last free summer. Anyways, I was a typical bored teenager and watched VH1 everyday. I first heard Duncan's music when I saw the video for Barely Breathing. So, now that song has sentimental value. Yeah yeah, cheesie, I know, but I don't mind. -Rachel IP: Logged |

Well, I am a newbie, so be nice. Anyway, I remember the first time I heard Duncan's music. It was actually his music video. It was a lazy sunday and I was just sitting around the house with nothing to do. I was flicking throuhg channels and stop on vh1. I'm sitting and watching and getting bored because they're showing old videos. I was about to change the channel when they said they were going to show a new video. It just so happened to be duncans video for barely breathing. The video was simplistic yet I marveled at the beauty of duncan's style and the emotions he expressed through his song. I went completely nuts over it and two days later I bought the album and fell in love with it. It was incredible. Unfortunately, no one else I know listens to duncan anymore, so I'm kind of by myself with it in a sense. oh well. that's my expirience. IP: Logged |

I was sitting in a Hy-Vee gorcery store eating breakfast with my mother. I think we were watching Good Morning America or some other morning show, and Duncan was on singing "Barely Breathing." They were talking about how long it had been number one on the charts. I don't think I had heard it before- I started to sing along with the chorus. IP: Logged |

actually, i was in the car and heard the song "barely breathing". of course i had to know who sang it so i waited for the dj to announce his name. at first i thought he said "dunkin' sheep". i thought that was weird, nobody had that kind of name ever. so i called the radio station and asked for that song and who sang the song. i had to let the dj repeat his name so i can buy the album right away (on impulse! which is so not me). had a hard time buying the album 'coz he's not really known here in the philippines and the salesladies have really broken english. but nway, bought duncan's album and never regretted it since. My first time? I was 15 and "Barely Breathing" was all OVER the radio. I loved the song! But, my incredible fascination with Ducan's music came to me last year. I had a friend of mine tell me my voice sounded kind of like Duncan Sheik. So, remembering B.B. from my high school days I went out and bought the first album. I fell in love immediately!! He came through Detroit a year ago this month, but unfortunately I was out of town at the time and missed him. You can be sure I won't miss his next performance here!! IP: Logged |

I actually can't rememeber really well. I don't think I heard it on the radio right away but when it starting to become a staple of the radio station. Anyways, I know he came here to Houston and I'm now mad that I didn't go to see him but at that moment in time, I was just starting to listen to English music. You see, all I listened to was in spanish so I wasn't that much of an interested party when it came to English pop or anything. Sad I know, I know. IP: Logged |

A few months ago I was in math class, mind a-wandering, and Barely Breathing just got stuck in my head. It was wierd- I hadn't heard the song in years. It drove me crazy for days cuz I didn't know who the song was by! Finally, I found out it was Duncan, and found Phantom Moon at the library. Loved it...got both his other CDs and I've been a fan ever since. Duncan's an amazing artist...but no one here's really heard of him and the CDs are hard to find. Oh well, maybe it's a good thing, he's our little secret! IP: Logged |

I was 15 and it was summertime, and I was sitting in my room, on the floor with the fan on me, and I remember I was crying because my boyfriend of the time had just hit me (the first and last time I've ever been hit by a guy) and I was so scared and thinking that at least now I knew the real him, when I suddenly heard this song on the radio. What caught my attention was when Duncan sings "What is this attraction? I only feel the pain. There’s nothing left to reason and only you to blame Will it ever change?" It was Barely Breathing. After that, he became my favorite singer and that song remained a favorite. --Melissa-- IP: Logged |

Ah yes, I remember! I was listening to a radio program called world chart show and then Duncan debuted. I instantly fell in love with the song... however, his cds never arrived here, so I am rediscovering him again, and I think Phantom moon is one of the 2 best cds ever made!!! (being Tori Amos' Boys for Pele the other) IP: Logged |

1996ish, I was a teenager, when all my friends were into the hip hop and rap, I was looking for something different, more meaningful. I flipped away from the most popular music channel, and found him on vh1. I admit it was his good looks that got my attention. Once I got over the shock, I realized that I really like his voice, it was beautiful (still is beautiful). When I brought the cd, I found that the new artist, Duncan Sheik, was more than just another pretty face, and great voice. His meaningful lyrics capivated me, and I've been a fan ever since. you know i find that very interesting because the exact opposite was true for me. when i first heard B.B. i thought it was ok, but when i saw duncan my cynical brain said another pretty face being marketed with a mediocre voice and decent music. i immediately decided to forget about him. it wasn't until a few years ago that a friend downloaded some mp3's and Barely breathing was one of them. i listened to it and remembered that i kind of liked the song and looked duncan up on the web to see if he was still out there. i read an article about him being buddhist which caught my attention because i think buddhism is a very intellectual rational concept. when i found out duncan wrote his own lyrics and music and played nearly all of the instruments on his albums i decided to give him an unbiased listen and was pleasantly surprised at how much i really enjoyed his music. have appreciated his music ever since ![]() IP: Logged |

Wow, a year after you've written this I see the post. I do remember the first time I heard Duncan.. I listened to it over, over, and over.. This is my third summer in Seattle and last year I went to see him at the Crocodile Cafe. I was absolutely mesmerized.. his singing/playing, and spooky in the background absolutely captured my heart. I hope spooky continues to play with him.. it was an unbelievable show. Perhaps I should go to the other board and post more there. :) IP: Logged |
