SteveYHey everyone. I'm a college student, and i spend most of my time playing my guitar to avoid doing school work. Lately, I've been on a "let's try to figure out every Duncan Sheik song" kick. It's all going pretty well, until I get to the bridge section of Barely Breathing.
So here's where I need the help of a fellow guitar player who knows the song.
During said bridge section ("I come to find, I may never know, a changing mind, is it friend or foe..."), I can't figure out the last chord in that four-chord progression.
I know the first chord is D, then the second chord is like an Aminor7, the third chord is like a c9 or something, and then....that last damn chord....under the lyrics "...is it friend or foe". What the hell is that???
I've been playing some sort of F-G chord, where the fingering is as follows (from low string to high string):
E string- 3rd fret
A string- muted
D string- 3rd fret
G string- 3rd fret
B string- 1st fret
E string- open

I also put my thumb on the 1st fret of the low E string, and kind of alternate between that note (F) and the note I hold down originally (G). You can kind of hear that in the bassline of the studio version, as well as in the acoustic recordings.

Now i know everyone's initial guess is "just play an F chord there", at least that's what EVERYONE's guitar tab says. But if you try playing along with the recording and you play an F at that spot, a dagger of dissonance should pierce through your brain.
So please, if anyone can help me out with that chord, it would be most appreciated. Thanks!

BryterLayter77Steve,

I'm not a guitar player, but I do have the music for "Barely Breathing" in front of me.
I think the fourth chord you're looking for is a Gm13, at least that's what the sheet in front of me says. Considering my lack of experience with the guitar, I'm probably the last person you want answering your question, but since I had the music (from April 1998's edition of Acoustic Guitar), I thought I would try and help.

I hope I did.

Best,

Richard

Acoustic JunkieThe last chord for the bridge is

e-0
b-1
g-3
d-3
a-x
e-3

LisawsOk, I have a book of guitar chords from Duncan Sheik's first album. I got it for Christmas and it says it was edited by Duncan so anyone who wants to know any of the chords is more than welcome to let me know.

Barely Breathing

mind, is it friend or foe? I rise above, I

sink below, and every time you come and go.

Please don't come and go.

If you don't know how to make some of those chords, I can make a tab pic for you.
Hope I helped!

LisawsOk, sorry, the way I posted that and the way it turned out don't exactly match. Those are the right chords, but it turned out over some of the wrong spots. Just play those chords though and you'll be fine.
SteveYHey AccousticJunkie-
Thank you! That is the chord that I have always played, and you are the first person to agree with me! You rule.

Steve

BlackwuzzyLet's ask Julian what he thinks?????

Much peace,
Michele

(I'm just learning)

Acoustic JunkieNo no steve, you rule.

joey

BlackwuzzyCool........
SteveYWho's Julian?
BlackwuzzyJulian is someone who can also play these songs... but recently moved back to NYC. Hope he gets this thread...and he will either agree or not agree with you guys. None the less, Julian is a great guitar player who can give you guys input.
Thanks.....

Steve Y...... I love your playing of "Longing Town" again. BW and your voice on it. Can you play "Rubbed Out?" Let me know please!!!

SteveYMichelle-
No, unfortunately I haven't tried learning that one yet. It's in an alternate guitar tuning. I'm trying to learn all of Duncan's songs that are in standard tuning first so that i don't have to keep changing the tension in my guitar's strings. Although I play Longing Town and The Winds That Blow, those are the exceptions (because one week last year I went on a Phantom Moon rampage). Then, I realized that Foreshadowing is in the same tuning configuration as The Winds That Blow, only everything was tuned down a few steps....neat! Foreshadowing is probably in my top three favorite Sheik tunes. But maybe, for you, I will learn Rubbed Out. Maybe...
Peace
Steve
