“YOURS” DVD

Hi,

So it seems that there is a little confusion (and disgruntlement) with respect to the software situation on the “YOURS” DVD. Let me clear a few things up. Up until the eleventh hour we were going to include the trial version of Ableton’s LIVE on the DVD itself, but due to some last minute (very annoying) legal wrangling we had to leave it that the user download the software from Ableton. It only takes a minute, and it is the exact same version of the software that was initially going to be on the DVD. And, yes, it is a trial version of the software because, obviously, I can’t put a $500 piece of software on a $14 CD/DVD. They would throw me in jail. : ) That being said, if you do a cool remix using the trial version of the software, you could certainly make an “analog” recording of it onto a CD recorder or some such device.

Also, although LIVE is a great program and perhaps best suited to doing the kinds of remixes I’m interested in, the “stems” of all the individual instruments are all 16 bit WAV files so you could put them into any other piece of music production software you may have (Logic, Pro Tools, Garage Band, Digital Performer, etc.) and go to town. And remember to move all the files onto your hard drive before launching the program, because thats the only way the files can be accessed quickly enough for any of the programs. Lastly I’d just like to say that unless you are already a laptop music production wiz, there is a fairly steep learning curve with all these kinds of music production programs, especially LIVE. They are not kid stuff. The easiest way to get started is to just mute or solo different instruments and see what that does to the song. Then you can get into deconstructing the parts and transforming the song into something completely different. Anyway I hope you have fun with it, and don’t get mad at me that I didn’t engage in software piracy!

Cheers,
DS

good for you for having the guts to let other people mess with your music like that. it would be nice if this became a trend with other artists too. technology is wonderful isnt it?

    Duncan,

Can’t wait to pimp your white limousine …

  3. bennyben Says:

Man, I can’t wait for tomorrow. I’m going to feel like a mad scientist brewing up some strange creations.

  4. Celandine Says:

Well, we definitely don’t want you going to jail!
I think everyone will be perfectly okay with the fact that they’ll have to download the software because of that! ;)

  5. ej3 Says:

Bottom line is..THANKS!! for including the files needed to re-mix the tracks. I will be able to use Garage Band…For me this is a fun bonus to your fantastic CD (which by the way needs no re-mixing).. No disgruntlement here.. but thanks for clearing up the confusion on my part..

  6. Afterall Says:

    What a bunch of crap.

just kidding…the CD itself is a great value. The remixing is a bonus. Looking forward to seeing you at The Fineline!

  7. russelld Says:

    Mad at you? Nooo.

I can’t wait to play around with the CD, hopefully I will be able to make something worth the time. I am heading straight to the store after class tomorrow. Really looking forward to this new CD!

  8. Maven Says:

Great to know tomorrow?Ls the release! I am soooo dying to get my hands on one of those. Though I must warn that White Limo is been around e-mule for download for a while (and yes, it is indeed WL), still don?Lt know how these things leaks out before stores distribuition.

NOW A QUESTION TO DUNCAN, OR TO SOMEONE WHO CAN SOLVE MY DOUBT.

I searched White Limo at amazon.com and found it pre-released. But as I bought Rufus Wainwright?Ls Want Two via internet, when I ordered it, it had a description of it?Ls itens and songs. It said: cd/dvd and showed the songs of each one.

In White Limo I found at amazon.com this doesn?Lt happen, it only says it?Ls an audio cd and then it lists the audio tracks. Does this mean Duncan?Ls DVD will be sold separated? How is it called?

    Thank you for the attention.

  9. russelld Says:

From Amazon.com: “MINE is Duncan’s version of these songs; YOURS is a DVD-ROM enabling listeners to create their own versions….”

Sounds like it comes with the DVD.

    - Russell

  10. the bets Says:

heheh this wonderful new distraction of course has to come out just when classes start up for us students … classes what classes?

    so excited

  11. peter Says:

    It comes with the DVD.

  12. Maven Says:

Awww… okay! Thank you so much for answering me. I would buy both even if sold separatedly. ^__~

This is what fans are for!
I am curious to know where we?Lll be allowed to post the songs once we “re-remix” them.

    Anyway, thanks.

And Duncan, keep up the great work.

  13. mrchess Says:

Thanks DS for the DVD. It’s really cool. I’ve played some, now I’m ready to dig deeper.

I?m a tad technologically challenged, so before I read that I was actually in a blissful state of ignorance. Now I?m confused. But I?m not mad about it : ). Mostly, I?m just anxious to hear the rest of the CD. I do have to add however that telling me that unless you are already a laptop music production wiz, there is a fairly steep learning curve with all these kinds of music production programs, especially LIVE. They are not kid stuff. is a bit like waving a big red flag in front of me. Now I?m wondering if there?s some way I could transform your beautiful music into something truly hideously appalling ?g a so-bad-it?s-good kind of thing, ya? know? Hmmm, I do like a challenge. Also, I have waaaaaay too much time on my hands.

    Cheers yourself,

Everything sounds uniquely fantastic! Thank you very much for that complete explanation…you’re too cool DS…on tour and everything, yet makes time to be available somehow when urgent queries arise :-)

Okay, for those like me…music production challenge…who wants to give a workshop ; ) Lastly, I sooo cannot wait to get my hands on the whole White Limo package…this waiting is killin’ me.

Fervently Awaiting the Arrival of White Limo ;)

    Hey Duncan-
Do you have any TV appearances planned to promote WL like you have for past albums? If you do, please let us know so we can tune in!!
Your comment about the DVD not being for kids also kinda has me spooked. I like a challenge too, but don’t have too much spare time to spend learning sometime too involved. Guess I will have to try it a little at a time, huh?
    Cheers to you!!

  23. Grizzant Says:

woo-hoo, if only Amazon didn’t take 5 days to deliver a cd! Oh well, thanks again, Duncan, for letting us mess with you’re stuff. Although I own Live5, I’ll probably be destroying your stuff in Logic - perhaps rewiring Live for some warp features or something.

Ps - Leveriza, if you ever feel like throwin’ some software love out to a broke-azz musician/fellow DS fan - holla! ;p

  24. john.b. Says:

Will the software enable me to add a rap by Bell Biv DeVoe? (Just kidding.) Can’t wait to pick up the album today, Duncan. Thanks as always for doing what you do. (And please come to the Indianapolis/Cincinnati/Louisville area, if you can.)

  25. russelld Says:

Yay for release days!! I went to four stores to get it! hahaha Granted, one of them was closed… But still!

    - Russell

  26. duncan Says:

russelld … Where did you go (and in what city do you live?) and who had it/did not have it? Inquiring minds want to know …

  27. ginger_g Says:

Thank you, Duncan, for such a wonderful CD! I’ve not only spread the word on my blog of your great Atlanta concert, but I’ve hopefully promoted your CD and I expect a few of my friends to buy it.

Again, thank you for the past 10 years of musical memories.

  28. agaraffa Says:

I had to go to two stores to find it… Target didn’t have it but CD World did :)

  29. Carlos Says:

I went to Target too and they didn’t have so I went to Best Buy, they didn’t have out buy the guy looked for it in the back and came back with 5 copies, I got one and he placed the rest of them in the right spot. I’M SO HAPPY! I’ve been waiting for this day FOREVER!

  30. kaustin24 Says:

I am in Fort Worth/Dallas area, and I went to Best Buy and they had about 10 copies in the new release area already out. On a side note also saw the Dallas Morning News interview in the paper and a few friends that I didn’t think listened to your music mentioned the CD to me this week. Looking forward to Gypsy Tea Room concert and wine tasting event.

  31. Nate8833 Says:

Okay…I went out to Borders and they didn’t have the CD. I was surprised because that type of music should be their bread and butter. Then I went to Best Buy, and they also did not have the CD out. I don’t even want to mention the place I bought the CD from because (and I’m not giving it back!) it contained both “yours” and “mine” discs!

  32. duncan Says:

Please let us know where (what city/store) you guys are not finding the record so we can deal with
    the distribution issues!!!!

    Thanks,
    DS

  33. Nate8833 Says:

Oops…sorry I read the lead post too quickly the first time. I thought that the one disc was completely eliminated from the package, but obviously that isn’t the case. Sorry for the mix-up!

  34. Nate8833 Says:

King of Prussia - Best Buy and Borders did not have the CD out.

    Tower Records had it.

  35. ej3 Says:

Just went to iTunes Music store and the CD is there for download, but…..they have the song samples all attached to the wrong song except for Hey Casanova….

  36. ladylazarus Says:

    Duncan,

I should have never pre-ordered your CD from Amazon……I can’t wait five days for it to arrive!!!!! Patience ins’t one of my greatest virtues. I decided to buy it today for myself, and give the one from Amazon as a gift. I had to go to two stores to find it. I live in North Scottsdale, Arizona, and they didn’t have it at Target. Best Buy had lots of copies:)

You are my favorite musician!!!!!! Thanks for making such beautiful music and sharing it with the world.

    ~ L

  37. Tansy Says:

    This is so very cool.
    So, so very cool!

The piano bits are gorgeous… and guitars… ? :sigh:
    I can’t even begin.

    You rock DS, and crew.
Thank you, thank you… so much.

  38. thegr8mr8a Says:

Thank you, Duncan! Very cool album (my first concern) and the DVD I’ll mess with later. I had the same problem as Russell; I had gone to Walmart, Meijer, Target, and Best Buy to find it only in the latter. Maybe I went before they put out the stock [even though they had an abundance of the retarded NOW cd!] They may not have had prioritised your disc, but I did! So, thank you very much and I hope to see you in the Indianapolis area sometime soon!

I got mine at Best Buy in North Little Rock. No problems at all AND I got to tell the cashier girl all about Duncan. She even went and got a copy of CD #1 for herself…. she’ll love it.

Oh, and by the way…… I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!!!

I am so excited about seeing the show tonight….. can’t wait.

    YAY!!!!!!!!

  40. Afterall Says:

I bought it over lunch and gave it my first listen over. It is very good. I thought it sounded like a record on your own terms, which I didn’t hear so much with Daylight. Don’t get me wrong, Daylight was a good record, but even from first listen, I connected with White Limousine a lot faster. I Wouldn’t Mind is a brilliant song. The style reminds me a little of Little Hands. Not that it sounds like it, but the structure or moods seem to be similar. Looking forward to listening to it on my drive home. I’m also looking forward to playing around with the software. Later

  41. the bets Says:

    Bravo
This is the closest i can come to shaking your hand (for now)
I went, sat outside, watched the sun go down and listened to the whole thing, and it was wonderful

breath in breath out - it’s done, it’s out, we love it

  42. sry110 Says:

I stopped by Target (who I didn’t expect to have it) and Coconuts (who I somewhat expected to have it), and neither store had it anywhere. I’ll stop by Sam Goody and FYE after dinner, and if they don’t have it then I might have to enter the dreaded Barnes and Noble.

  43. linnium Says:

I just bought the CD at Best Buy for $14. You have to realize that while they sell records, they are not a record store. So, they are VERY lax about getting the stuff that was released on Tuesday out on the floor before they open on Tuesday. I’ve even been their in the afternoons and they STILL haven’t opened “that” box, as they say. Other times, they only got 8 copies of a CD everyone wants (Depeche Mode) and they are surprised when they are sold out. Many was a time I wanted to debrain the idiot in the blue polo right then and their. But alas, I’m not a violent person. If you want a low price, Best Buy is a good spot, but you get what you pay for in service.

    ~David

    P.S. Duncan,

If I were to bring this nice white paper covered CD to the show on the 3rd, will you be available or willing to sign it?

    ~David…um…again

  44. duncan Says:

Again, please let me know what city you all are in!!!!!

  45. linnium Says:

Oh sorry, I just bought it at the Costa Mesa CA Best Buy at Metro Point. Pleanty there.

    ~David

  46. zeroSPace Says:

Just picked up my copy at the Best Buy here in Hollywood, CA on La Brea and Santa Monica. I apparently was the first to ask for it at 3:20 PM Pacific because it wasn’t on the shelf yet… well not exactly. After the very nice manager (non-polo employee) helped me look for the disk for a good 10 minutes, we finally decided to look under “D”. Lo and behold, all 6-8 disks were right there behind some Hilary Duff disks.

I’m thankful for that lady not giving up since I used my lunch hour to walk there to get the CD. There’s a Target there, but I didn’t try it because it seemed to me that people were having better luck with the Best Buy.

So far this CD is great! I’m looking forward to finishing it and giving it plenty more listens.

My fiance and I are looking forward to your upcoming show at the Troubador!

    James

  47. linnium Says:

    Hey zeroSPace,

You and your fiance are seeing Dunc in LA? My fiance and I are seeing him in San Juan Capistrano. Funny!

    ~David

  48. zeroSPace Says:

    David/Lithium,

Very cool! We saw him down there last time he was in town in September. We decided that 70 miles would be far to go this time even though we love the Coach House. Not to mention that the Troubador is 5 minutes from our place. :-)

    James

  49. linnium Says:

    zeroSPace (and it’s Linnium),

Ironically, I love in OC, but we are moving to LA the week before the show. This will be our first time at this venue. I don’t think I’ve ever been to the Troubador, but I remember being at the Paladium (spelling) to see Rammstein/KMFDM/Lords of Acid. At least Dunc’s show wil be more relaxed and wont set himself a blaze grunting “Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen.” :-)

    ~David

  50. linnium Says:

Um…i meant live, not love. Note to self: PROOF READ.

    ~D

  51. coolinaz Says:

Okay, these stores are in Tucson. Circuit City didn’t have any and a blue polo guy checked the list and you weren’t there for current releases. I asked when they would have some and he didn’t know (of course). Best Buy was already sold out and will have more on Friday. Target didn’t have any either (is WL being distributed to Target or Wal-Mart??) Their music sections are so small I kinda don’t think they will stock it.
I will call around some other places tomorrow (gas is too expensive to drive all over town) and report back. Also have been asking the “80′, 90’s and whatever” format station to play WL.

  52. zeroSPace Says:

heh.. I should proof read too I guess!

I used to live in Dana Point. Grew up there actually. I’ve seen Mr. Sheik more than a few times and at least four of those times were at the Coach House.

  53. linnium Says:

    zeroSPace,

I live in Huntington Beach for the moment. Grew up here, too. After I settle in and get my equipment ready, I’m going to be looking for some musicians and see if a collaberation will form. Otherwise, I’m finishing everything on my own and finding people to play it. It will be nice to get back to the things that are important to me. My fiance just finished her vocals on her album, so it’s lit a fire.

  54. FullSwingActor Says:

Hey Duncan (and all you other fans)….

Here in Portland, OR I picked up WL at Circuit City in Jantzen Beach. They had 3… As for WalMart, the new one in Vancouver, WA had 3 copies… EVERYONE, if you do go to Best Buy/Circuit City and DON’T see it, grab one of the employees. They recieved these CD’s Friday/Monday. Now it could be out of stock due to fans actaully buying them (what a great concept), but I KNOW these chains well, and they’ll work them out when they can (major releases/ cd’s on ad are BB’s most important items to get out)….

I’m enjoying “Don’t Believe In Ghosts” right now…

  55. DS MANAGEMENT Says:

Thank you to all of the fans that made the effort to get the CD today. I have noticed that several of you were unable to find a copy at your local retailer. Please email me at management@duncansheik.com with the market and name of the store and I will be sure to forward this on to the distributor. Worst case, you can always request to order a copy at the store and they can ususally get copies in a few days. Happy listening and mixing.

So um… I apparently found the non-existant album on itunes, and downloaded it, only to find that the songs are all messed up… deep breath… i guess i have to talk to itunes, and after not being satisfied with best buy… i’m about to pull my hair out. All I want is a functioning copy of WL!!! :-( What I do have is pretty…

  58. tcj Says:

Best Buy in Mesa, AZ claims to have the album in stock (according to the BB site) but it is not out on shelves. There’s also no rack space for DS at all and, of course, no other DS CDs stocked at all. This is a common problem for Best Buy here in and around Phoenix - you’re very lucky to find a new release that isn’t a big-name artist on the release date in the store. Very often they actually have them, but don’t bother putting them on shelves - often for weeks, believe it or not. More often than not, I have to ask someone to go get the discs out of the back, and judging by how long it takes them to get the discs usually, anything not guaranteed of being a big seller that week is pretty low on their priority. Don’t think this is a coincidence, people - the big labels do what they can to make sure their biggest-selling products are in the racks on time and they make sure they crowd out smaller artists that actually need the space and exposure.

Absolutely incredible album - definitely going to be one of my favorites of this young year, no doubt about it. It DESERVES the rack space at Best Buy that it’s not getting.

  59. thebutangjedi Says:

iTunes for the win… but duncan, they messed up some track naming… and it seems a few of the tracks or messed up (check the reviews on itunes to confirm this).

  60. thebutangjedi Says:

PS I just checked itunes (10:34 pm PST) and the album is now not showing up. Someone must have figured out there was a goof. I hope things get fixed soon.

  61. mike_relay Says:

I noticed on one of the tunes the bass and the guitar track was on the same track. Is that something that was done on purpose?

This is a little further out. Any chance we can get a vocal track without the verb and the delays?

I haven’t gotten a chance to actually listen to the record yet! Messing with the stems was too much fun!
    :)
    mike

  62. linnium Says:

    Mike and everyone else,

As I’ve noticed, the YOURS DVD is not the album with seperated tracks, but seperated parts. So, if you wanted to cancel out one of the drum kits, you may, but you may not cancel a portion of the drum kit, like the snare. This is the complete mastered version of the album with the parts seperated. I beleive the effects on vocals, such as delay, cannot be replicated on LIVE because different systems were used for different effects. This, I think, is the most effective way to give fans an opportunity to make remixes without handing everyone a copy of the master recording. Those tend to be sacred to the artist and to the record label.

    ~David

  63. silvenshadow Says:

    linnium - mike,
In the same boat. I’d love to get my hands on the raw (as in what came in off the mics / effects returns) material, but I’m thankful I have anything.
Keep in mind also that the idea was so that normal people could make a remix using downloadable software. If you strip everything off, getting a cd-quality remix becomes more of a month long project, rather than a few hours of fun.
Although I’d love to see people’s reaction taking a look a one song in all it’s sonic-engineered glory. I think some people take alot of what goes on for granted.

Duncan, if you’re reading this; Kudos.
You’ve spent the time to listen to your fans, and you’ve given them the gift of your music in one of the purest ways I can imagine. I feel like it’s my birthday. I’m going to buy a few copies for my friends and hopefully when the royalty check comes in you’ll feel like it’s yours. :)

    Best Wishes, ZMC

  64. bryanwyoung Says:

I’ve been trying to copy the “Yours” DVD to my hard drive, but it keeps telling me that there is a file corruption error. I know DVDs tend to be prone to this sort of thing. Anybody else having this problem? I’d really like to have these available; I was looking forward to removing the guitars and practicing the songs with a full band!

Any suggestions (besides buy another copy)? I’d take it back to the retailer, but I bought it at Duncan’s show in Dallas!

  65. cranie4 Says:

    DS,
I bought the album yesterday..First let me say that as a long time fan of what you do this album is light years ahead of your prior work. I also have to say your vocals on it are the best you’ve done in my opinion.
With that said on to the THEIRS DVD. Being I have a home studio I didn’t run into any software issues. I flew the tracks into Nuendo 3 and they sync up perfectly. It’s incredible to have single tracks done in a pro studio to test MY own. Anyways the only thing that would be GREAT help is to have the tempos for each song so that I can sync up Reason to Nuendo and add to the existing tracks. Any possibility of you posting those?

Thanks again and I’m waiting for you to come up to MA..
    Mike Gervasi
    cranie@hotmail.com

  66. cranie4 Says:

For those interested parties not using Live..”Hey Cassanova” is 68 bpm exactly..more to follow as I fly them in and figure them out..or when DS posts them :)

  67. smtcharlie Says:

Yes, I am having trouble with the DVD as well. There are only 3 files listed, 2 being 1 K and no format (names being something like DS and DM, or something similar), and the other being a text file that I can’t read.

Are there exact system requirements listed anywhere? Or is it possible that I got a Mac formatted DVD that won’t read correctly on Windows?

I record to ADAT and mix on Windows (Sonic Foundry products), so I was really excited about hearing the individual tracks and tinkering with them. Still am, I’m going to try the DVD on machines at work…

cranie4, do you use Windows or a Mac? And you were able to grab the individual wav files on the DVD just fine?

  68. linnium Says:

    Brian Young,

You may want to try a DVD drive on a different system just to be sure it’s an issue with the DVD and not the DVD drive of system. Make sure there are not visible defects on the data read side of the disc. If it’s a double layer DVD, which is basically two one layer DVDs glued together, make sure there is not a split in the glue. Very rarely, the glue will splis a little an oxygen will destroy the metallic material inside.

I have a good feeling though that your disc will work on a different machine. If it doesn’t, try contacting the reps through this site and see what they suggest.

    ~David

  69. peter Says:

    1. If I can get around to it, I’ll post the BPMs of everything, but just so you know, if you download the free version of LIVE from Ableton and then open the LIVE files associated with each track, LIVE opens them at the correct BPM, which you can see at the upper left of the LIVE page. Then you can either mess around with the tracks in LIVE, or get the BPM and move on to your preferred application. At least one of the tracks has tempo changes which are already mapped if you open it in LIVE, but which you’ll either have to ignore or map manually if you’re using another application.

    2. On these DVD issues… I’m looking into it, and I’ll try to have some information for you guys tomorrow.

  70. smtcharlie Says:

Tried the DVD with a Mac today, and it worked great. I didn’t experiment on other Windows systems…

Either way, I now have the .wav files, and am ready to go. I did a quick scan through a few songs, and hearing the individual tracks is very interesting!

I could have a bad drive on this machine, that’s always possible, but I have used it semi-recently to play DVD movies…

Thanks to Duncan for making this available. It is really, really cool!

    Yo Homeboy-
I picked up your cd at the Chelsea Barnes & Noble in NYC (24th&6thAve) yesterday. They had 25 copies in stock - but not on the shelves - they were still behind the counter in boxes. I very politely asked them to GET THAT CD OUT! PS- I hear “White Limousine” on Sirius radio all the time.
from my happy ears to yours…

FWIW I can read the DVD on a FreeBSD system… maybe it’s a Windows configuration issue. I don’t know what software you’re using to view the DVD filesystem.

I *love* the raw vocal tracks!

I run linux and I noticed that the permissions were a bit wacky and I had to be root (administrator) user to read them off the DVD, I’m sure that people running other POSIX-like systems (perhaps MacOS X) might have issues.
Try giving yourself admin access on your box if you’re having trouble.
I have no clue as to why the permissions were set like that, but hey.

Its been alot of fun so far remixing stuff—I enjoy kind of making the unplugged versions of the tunes—-i also upped David poe’s vocals on white limo, Duncan should have done the same—-he’s just jealous and doesn’t want david to overpower the King Sheik! :) Just kidding, but anyway, it’s been alot of fun—-I’m excited to finish the remixing of the cd and hopefully have a cd all my own—my own white limo, so to speak. I also saw him at Club Suede in Park City, except I’m kicking myself for not hanging around to talk to my idol. Oh, well another day. I just envy Jim boggia because he gets to tour with him—-that’s my absolute dream. to play my music—-overall inspired by duncan—-along side him. He’s an amazing person and musician. Also, 2 nights later—a band I’m in played at the very same club on the very same stage duncan did a few nights prior! How damn cool is that!!!! anyway, love ya duncan, so does my wife, my beta fish, and my guitars—-thanks to you and all your alternate tuned guitars—maybe, just maybe my wife will let me purchase more instruments. Than again maybe not. Peace and love,

    Duncan,

Just wanted to let you know that I found “White Limousine” in the first store I checked. Wal-Mart had it in Wauseon, Ohio, a little town about 30 miles west of Toledo. I was ecstatic! Great CD! I too, am Buddhist, and “Land” is really speaking to me….
