White Limo (non-political)

So yesterday was the official “add-date” at radio for White Limousine and it was first or second most added at the AAA radio format (depending on which chart you look at). That’s a great first week so thanks to everyone who called in to their station to hear it. I’m in the middle of another workshop for “The Nightingale”, but I hope to get into some more heated debates with y’all after I’m done with that!

    Congrats Dunc!

Bought my Coach House tickets (4th time seeing you there with my wife!) I have some great pictures from the last show that I wish I could post here.. I cant wait to play WL non-stop between release date and Feb 3…

  7. deek_md Says:

    PS _

What about iTunes? Can you get your single released there?

  8. Tansy Says:

    Clapping hands for you!
Each new ear has the potential to open eyes… :)

    Speaking of charts…
When I was at work on Tuesday, I was listening to some old radio mix-tapes (!) from back in the day. On one of the tapes, there was a Casey Kasem Top 20 Year End Countdown for 1997… thing. And guess what? You were #1! (HA!) Why I still have it, I couldn’t tell you. BUT I did get all smiley listening to Casey recalled your progress on the charts.

    Ah nostalgia.

    Anyway…
    Have yourself a good day,
I’m off to snuggle the sheets. :ahhhhhhh:

PS. Buddhist Q: Do you feel that emptiness is a something (ie, a place for the bliss body), or is it more like the hub of a wheel? We’ve just started to learn this concept in my Asian Philo class, and I’m finding it really fascinating. Just wondering what you think about it.

  9. Roxanne Says:

There’s an installation artist by the name of Pedro Reis who once said “An artwork will not endure if it is made to be understood.” I believe the same holds true for the human mind. If we didn’t challenge each other every day with thought and perspective, there’d be a stagnate collective psyche. Hmmm…which makes me wonder if conflict, whether internal/external, is a neccessity for the continued evolution of the mind? If so, where does that leave Peace? Hmmm…

I roamed around Asia alone for 8 mos and learned more about my existence in that time than my entire 28 years of life. I’m not saying traveling is the answer to all but it did prompt me to put down the books, newspapers and magazines, turn off the radio, TV and ideologies, move past the Americana bubble and discover commonalities across religion and culture I never knew existed. It’s the most precious experience from which an entire new perspective was born. A perspective not just of our country or our world but of the entire universe and the role our humanity plays.

Duncan, I’ve always loved this one:

And though you struggle to realize this earthly paradise
Is it so far above us
To put away the poisonous ideas
    You know it’s just ideas
They’re the only… enemies ’round here

I look foward to the new CD!

    Much Love,
    Roxanne

  11. sjbeatle Says:

Great to hear, Duncan. Have fun with the workshop, and let’s hope that the single keeps “droppin’ like it’s hot!” (lame). What I mean to say is, let’s hope that the single keeps playing at that more and more people are turned on by it. It’s a great number, and deserves all the publicity it can possibly get.

    Ride on . . .

  12. leveriza Says:

HOORAY…I just got done listening to “White Limousine” playing on KCRW. Well, a very, very good sign if Nic is playing it…and right after the new Radiohead song too “Gagging Order” from some Hurricane Relief benefit cd. One more…also heard “Hey Casanova” on the same program this past Monday.
Best of luck to you, Duncan Sheik… :-)

    ~L

  13. Cici Says:

That’s so exciting, Duncan! The new record is gonna be huge baby huge.
When you come back for some debates, let’s talk Patriot Act..

    Leveriza,
Gagging Order is also on a single for Go To Sleep. Along with a song called I Am a Wicked Child. It’s a very good disc.

  14. JoelCeballos Says:

Shopping! WOW! Very, very nice. Sheik… you are like a god walking amongst mere mortals; with suits that make Sinatra look like a hobo.

  15. Maven Says:

Way to go Duncan! Congrats for the music and my best wishes for you and your new album! Hugs from Brazil!

Really should be researching for my term paper…
    but a girl’s mind wanders.
Anyway. Just had to tell you that I
love, love, LOVE the cover of White Limo!!!
A print student?s dream! And with the vintage vehicle? SO tasty!
Might I ask who did the art design?

I’ve been so caught up with holiday/school/work stuff that I totally forgot about the weekly release. :( But, I remembered among my countless books and citation notes. “Shopping” is really fantastic Duncan. It’s kind in the vein of Magazines, which is one of my favorite DS songs… but it?s got some bite to it?g like nothing I?ve heard come from you… Very, very good.

Thank you for the few minutes of freedom.
    Much love,
    Susann

Oh, PS. I’m really looking forward to hearing more of Milo’s stuff in February. Where do you find these wonderful musicians?

  19. Topaz Says:

Duncan, I cried the first time I heard “The Dawn’s Request”. What a song! It just tears my heart out. “Star Field on Red Lines”… so haunting, deep, and rich-sounding. It sort of reminds me of a David Sylvian song. It’s very sad and beautiful. And “Land”…I feel like I can SO relate to whay you’re saying in this song. It’s so “free” sounding…I’m in love with it.

*sigh* Good stuff. Everything I’ve heard so far sounds wonderful…And I’m not even mentioning some of the others that have already been floating around for a bit…I just love your music to pieces.

    Laura

  20. astralchanteuse Says:

I just listened to “The Dawn’s Request”. Yes, I teared up too and got chills. I said aloud, “THIS is why I want to live.”

I still want to believe the song is for me. My name’s Dawn. :)

Once again, thank you, Duncan for creating such beautiful music with meaningful lyrics. I wish I could emphasize how much it means to me.

    *tears in eyes*

    dawn

  21. blackwuzzy Says:

Wowwwwwww. That’s just so very beautiful. I think that Duncan touches us all in this way. Yes, it really is Beyond Words.

How could we Ever Thank Him? or Let Him Know?

Well, I hope you know how very Special you are and how much you Mean to us all Duncan.

  22. coolinaz Says:

Where did you guys hear it? I wanna hear it, I wanna hear it…

  23. lohm Says:

  24. astralchanteuse Says:

    coolinaz,

go to www.myspace.com/duncansheik. at the moment, you can listen to the revamped version of “white limousine”, “the dawn’s request”, “land”, and star field on red lines”.

    namaste.

  25. blackwuzzy Says:

Thanks for all of your Efforts Duncan, and your open Ears and eyes today.

Have a great day. Much Peace unto you,

    Michele :)

  26. blackwuzzy Says:

    Thanks Guys!!!

    BW XO

  27. coolinaz Says:

Okay thanks guys!!! Have listented to these about a million times since yesterday. Absolutely love the harmonies with David Poe on WL- they blend so well. WOW. I know this song isn’t new to many of you, but I just heard it first time when Duncan was here in Sept.
BTW- the satellite station is playing the heck out of it, but the local AAA still hasn’t decided to add to the playlist. I am calling everyday and they say they still don’t know, but thanks for calling. What can I say to help convince them?? Once this gets real big, they are gonna feel like fools for not jumping on it.
Duncan, I SO appreciate your musical genius (my boys keep asking if you think you are a genius from the references in your songs, ha!), so much of the stuff out there now is garbage or fluff. Your music moves me in a way that most others don’t. Guess that’s what you do this for. Be proud of your body of work and accomplishments, you deserve it!!

  29. ALackofColor84 Says:

    Duncan -
“Dawn” is a brilliant song. It has such an epic feeling to it. I cannot wait for January to roll around and listen to the whole album. I hope that you always work with Simon Hale. You two make some of the best arrangements in music. I love that you like to use strings so much in your music. It adds a superb quality to your music. My favorite use still is ‘House Full of Riches.” I would die to see you perform with an orchestra.

  30. Boochx Says:

FYI—just heard “White Limo” on WXPN in Philly.

I hope it adds a few more fans to your “collection”.

    Merry Christmas.

  31. blackwuzzy Says:

Looks like she will have to try again. :)

    Thanks D. :)

  32. coolinaz Says:

Okay I think I just got “Dawn” after listening to it about 20 times. I’m slow I know… wow how incredibly powerful the lyrics and the music. I think this goes down as my favorite Duncan song of all time (along with Memento). The more I listen to it, the more I want to.
The AAA station here added WL to the playlist finally. They were funny- today’s call they said “Oh you must be the pain in the a** who has been calling everyday”. LOL Guess it helped. Anyway glad it will be aired now.

  33. coolinaz Says:

Oh BTW, the strings in “Dawn” just give me chills…
so many layers, so much to listen to and appreciate…

  34. jaxtonypiper Says:

With so much going on in the world today, it seems to me that NOT being political would be the worst thing.

You’re music is just that… YOUR music. Say what you want, how you want, when you want.

I am SO excited about being able to see you in January in Little Rock. This has been something I have wanted for a very long time…. and patience pays off. I must’ve done something right, because Karma is coming back to me in such great form. YAY, KARMA!

You got to meet my best friend, Val (picture of said meeing at: http://lrtony.blogspot.com/2005/11/jealousy.html). I was jealous, but I let it go. And now, FINALLY, my chance is here.

    Yay Me! :-)

  35. Scoobi_FreeBSD Says:

Woohoo! I’m planning on trying to make the AR. too (I love the name of the venue :-) ) Spooky thing is I have a friend named Val who may be there too…. *cue eerie music*

    Anthony

  36. jaxtonypiper Says:

AND you name is Anthony…. so’s mine.

You’re freaking me out, dude! :-)

  37. Scoobi_FreeBSD Says:

Yah I just noticed that after visiting your website…my Val’s freaked out about it too! If I make it up there I’ll buy you guys a beer :-) …or some chicken fingers or whatever’s customary :-)

Chicken Fingerz says the show’s 21+…any chance of them relaxing that? wristbands maybe? I’ll just email ‘em & ask…

  38. Norm Says:

Imagine my surprise to find a copy of White Limo on Ebay this morning.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Duncan-Sheik-White-Limo-EP_W0QQitemZ4807152609QQcategoryZ307QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

  39. agaraffa Says:

I thought Duncan was going to make the White Limo EP available through the members only site? What ever happened to that?

  40. coolinaz Says:

That’s really sad, Ebay has been a good thing, but a lot of times this kind of crap happens…

  41. jaxtonypiper Says:

That’s so lame. You think Duncan gets a dime off that?

I should just buy it, not open it and give Duncan the money AND the CD at the concert on the 24th…..

    Lousy pirates.

  42. agaraffa Says:

I really don’t see a problem with it. If it’s a legit silver CD, it was originally purchased from Duncan and he got his money for it. It’s just capitalism at work… supply and demand. If Duncan made it more widely available people wouldn’t be price gouging on Ebay.

  43. ej3 Says:

I don’t think it’s piracy…It’s NOT the full release CD.. It’s NOT a burned copy….it’s the White Limousine CD EP, still in the wrapper. It had to be purchased from a DS concert etc;.. if someone wants to give $25+ for it, let ‘em have it… I paid that much for “Humming Along” on Ebay and was glad to get it..

  44. jaxtonypiper Says:

I should have done more reading before I opened my mouth, eh? LOL Sorry. I just figured someone had pirated a copy and tried to sell it on Ebay… I was angry. Okay… more jealous THEY had it and not me…. but I digress. :-)

another off the topic post. . .

i’m jealous of the folks in boston who get to see DS on new year’s eve. i wanna be at the, as the press release says, “upbeat but melancholic” performance. guess i’ll have to wait for february at the troubadour, one of my favorite venues.

btw i feel horrible for having bought a used DS cd for a friend, but at least i’ve brought several friends to several DS concerts, right?

  47. Tansy Says:

    Random agreement:
Duncan, I’m with you on the ‘I don’t like musicals’ thing!
Tonight, I sat through a lecture (at what was supposed to be a poetry reading) about the “creative process” behind a musical’s logistics… I came SO close to going mad! The idea of making something so… literal, due to a fear of alienating the audience? No abstract, crispy words? And to boot, a passionless singer?
    Good greif, how obnoxious.

Anyway. Just wanted to share. I’m sure- feeling the way you do- you’re making something totally innovative with Steven. Is there anyway we’re going to be able to get our fan-hands on Nero? Is that a even a plausable question?

    Thankyadear.
    Night sir,

Duncan, I just listened Shopping, and i think it’s great! I would like to know if you have any date for mexico… i know that maybe it’s not a good market for you but i want you to know there are a lot of people who would pay to see you around here. Not just the money of course, but you are really great and you make good music ant that’s what really matters. I hope someday we could see you. I really like Magazines song!!!

    Angel, from Mexico

  49. Sereana Says:

    Hey Duncan,
I’m so glad that you’ve come out with a new record and I can’t wait to hear it! But what makes me sad is that the whole time you’ve been making music and touring, I’ve never been able to see you once. I’m going overseas soon and I was wondering if you could come a little closer to hampton, virginia or at least have that gig sooner than the 24th of february. Yeah, I know it’s too much to ask but who knows when I will be able to see you play LIVE in CONCERT.
One of your many adoring fans.

Duncan, I’m sorry but all these replies turn my stomach. I keep reading the same thing over and over again, a hundred different ways.

I feel this blog is lacking the imagination and originality an artists life consists of.

Duncan, tell me the deeper, the better.

  53. blackwuzzy Says:

Tell us the deeper? That may be hard to do here.
It is “US”, who must tell Duncan the deeper. Duncan does that already in his works, really.

    bw

Should Duncan decide someday to tell me the deeper, I have many similar thoughts to share. (but not here)

  54. jaxtonypiper Says:

i’ve found duncan profound enough without having to go deeper. he shares what he wants and that’s good enough for me……

i worry about MY boring HIM to tears with idle replies, but he seems to get a kick out it…. from the fans, I mean.

    Just my 2 cents.

  55. russelld Says:

Hahaha I agree with jaxtonypiper. Duncan actually reads posts, addresses them in the blog, or replies to them directly. He’s given us a lot of personal information, I think. Lately, it has been mostly CD-related, but what can you expect? I am sure that once it has been out for awhile, we’ll get back to stuff like that. Anyway, I don’t know what exactly you are expecting as far as “the imagination and orginality” of an artist’s life, but they are just people, too. I doubt Duncan’s life is that much different than anyone else’s. He has interests, eats breakfast, goes to work, talks on the phone… It just happens that his work is music.

  56. Nate8833 Says:

I just heard “White Limousine” on 88.5 WXPN in Philly. Someone had posted the same station carrying the song earlier. Could it be gaining traction? It was the first time I heard the studio version of the song, and I must say I was pleased. After hearing it a couple of times in concert, I wasn’t expecting the musical composition to be as dense as it was (which I liked very much!).
