The Cat’s Out of the Bag …
Well, I guess I should just go ahead and let you know about what we’re planning for the DVD that will accompany the White Limousine CD. Here is my explanation that was sent out to the press …
—————————————————————————————
A word about the White Limousine companion DVD.
While I was on tour promoting my last album, the very nice people at M-Audio gave me a copy of a piece of software called Reason. Though I had played around with it’s predecessor, Rebirth, Reason is a far more versatile tool (kind of a virtual rack of synths and samplers on your laptop) and I started to think about how it might inform the songwriting process for my next record. Once I had come up with a couple of dozen musical ideas using Reason, I thought I might make a record where the entire arrangement for the songs (except for a vocal and an acoustic guitar) would be generated in Reason. This was going to be my version of the minimalist, electronica, singer-songwriter record. My next thought was that I could release the Reason files along with the CD so that anyone could remix the songs however they wanted to.
I started to make my record this way but to make a long and winding creative process short, I ended up re-doing the record with my band as four human musicians playing in a room together with a great engineer. I think that as much as I love electronic music, I was kind of afraid of committing to a record that’s mainly programming. But I still very much liked the idea of releasing the record in such a way that anyone could remix the songs or create new music from the constituent parts of those songs. Luckily, the folks at M-Audio had also given me a copy of software called Live which, because it deals with pre-recorded audio as well as midi, would be an ideal way to release the record in a format such that it can be remixed and messed with in any imaginable way. When you open up a given song in Live, all the individual parts will be separated out so that they can be muted, soloed or altered. This is not a new idea. Peter Gabriel did a 4-track version of it for his record Us, Brian Eno talks about it in his book/diary A Year With Swollen Appendices, I hear Todd Rundgren did something conceptually similar a while back, and, very recently, Nine Inch Nails have released some of their songs in Garage Band format.
So, all that being said, White Limousine will be released with two discs. A normal CD labeled mine with the twelve songs, and a DVD labeled yours with an installable version of Live software and all twelve songs set up in Live so that they can be remixed.
In this way, maybe someone will actually make the minimalist electronica version of White Limousine that I was afraid to realize - personally, that is what I hope. But, of course, there are countless other types of versions of these songs that one might attempt and I’m genuinely interested in what other people do with this material. Also, I plan to set up a web site where people can post their remixes and listen to what others have done. I’m not really sure how these songs might evolve - and I think it is that uncertainty that I like most about this process.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:30 pm
Leaving your song open to be remixed by listeners is a pretty innovative idea, sould be fun.
What kind of tone/mood are you going for with the new album? esp. since you switched back to in-studio/live instruments. instead of going with the processed sounds.
Also diggin the ‘mine’ / ‘yours’ concept.
-Cory
Fellow musician…well im trying. heh.
November 8th, 2005 at 11:58 pm
So again, I reiterate:
Duncan, you seriously kick ass…
I think they might name a karate kick after you. Really.
Thank you for making it something reciprocal.
Or well, potentially.
:sigh: You fabulous music person, you.

Hey Duncan,
This is my first post….I had to….This is the coolest thing ever. I cannot wait to check it out! Thanks so much!

Hmmmmmm Duncan. Finally, something I can play with. Maybe I can finally come up with some very cool material, based upon your concepts.
My wish, is to someday write and play my own Music. This tool should help in the meanwhile. Thanks Duncan.
Much love and a peaceful night,
Michele :)

PS..Julian….Where have you been Man. Glad your BACK!!!!!!!! - love…. :)

D,
Forgot to say again, Your the Best!!!!!
November 9th, 2005 at 3:00 am
Duncan, you still and always will totally rock my face off. Great idea. Can’t wait for the new CD to drop.
P.S. - The picture we got together in Chicago didn’t turn out. Bad film or something. I was crushed. Ah well, I hope I can catch you on tour again.
November 9th, 2005 at 3:15 am
Duncan, I wish you could give us more insight into when this album will eventually materialize. I have burned a hole in the White Limo B-sides, and have even rallied other fans to retreive your additional unheard of material, such as ” Now or Never ” ( a personal favorite, though I hear you never were happy with the recording itself). The ability to remix the album is fun, but I have slight issue with tampering with an artists’ creative process…the way you have recorded the songs are the way you intended them to be heard, and sometimes the interpretations of others can be disturbing. However, its a neat concept, and im never opposed to trying something different. Thanks for keeping at it all of these years.

D-
Lovin’ it! So, is street still January-ish on WL? What are the masterminds going to set the list price at now that it includes the DVD?? Either way, it’s gonna be cool to have it out there.
I can probably speak for everyone on here, but we’d love to see a “real” DVD from you. Some concert footage, videos, behind the scenes, ya’ know the basic goodies… You know I’ll be there to help you shoot it/edit it if you need me. Good seeing you here in Portland awhile ago. Hope to see ya’ in the NW for the “White Limo” tour (not just for the pre-WL).
Take care,
Craig M. Johnson
November 9th, 2005 at 7:36 am
I’m looking forward to “White Limousine” now more than ever. Thanks, Duncan.
November 9th, 2005 at 8:04 am
One of the things I have always admired about you is how you never seen to have anything to prove. Not many artistes would allow people to have that kind of insight into their work, but you seem intrigued by the possibilities. I think back to how amazed I was when Phantom Moon came out because of the collaboration (you and Sater) and it really opened my mind to new things creatively. I’m sure this record will do the same as do all your albums.
Peace
November 9th, 2005 at 8:38 am
Such a fun idea! And it’ll be very cool to hear what everyone does with it….I love the idea of a site to post the remixes.
Laura
November 9th, 2005 at 9:26 am
Duncan,
Great concept! I’m looking forward to playing engineer with your new record. The software sounds interesting. It’s great of you to share your individual tracks with the rest of us to remix. I can’t wait to see all the creativity that is spawns on your remix website.
November 9th, 2005 at 10:02 am
That is AWESOME! I am (even more) excited for this record, now! A thought: Perhaps you could set something up via the member’s only area to view the tracks people create and possibly release another CD with your favorite remixes. I’d buy it.
But, regardless, thanks for this. You rock more with every blog.
- Russell
November 9th, 2005 at 12:43 pm
I second Russell’s idea… I’d totally buy that remix CD.
I remember reading the blurb on Rounder’s website about the yours/mine concept of WL last night… now I’m more than psyched to snag the album when it comes out. I hope we can do you proud with whatever we as fans come up with for remixes.
The Live software is compatible with Mac I hope? (I own a Powerbook with Mac OSX.)
I’ll be enjoying the WL limited edition CD (which I put on my iPod) till then. Yay. ^_^
Catherine
P.S. I also agree with Craig about putting out a DVD with concert footage, videos and other stuff. I’ve got a few of your music videos on tape (back when VH1 still played mostly music videos and I bothered to record them). And recently my husband rented some pop music video DVD, and Barely Breathing was on it. It’d be nice to at least get more of that stuff on DVD.
November 9th, 2005 at 1:27 pm
Well, “never cease to amaze…” very much looking forward to the new/improved record release… :-) BTW, for the folks who do not visit the Sheik Freik site…Duncan partnered with a new record label—>Rounder Records Group.
Do check the site www.rounder.com for more information on “White Limousine” loads of information there regarding his upcoming cd(just in case you missed the FYI postcard floating around during the tour) :-)
Best of Luck with everything, DS…

i think it is a very brave thing you are doing, and i applaud you Duncan. something very different to include in i guess what would be “bonus features”. i like it.
i also like the idea of either you throwing together a few of your favorite mixes. maybe you could have an area where people can vote on their favorite, or rate each mix. think of the possibilities….

November 9th, 2005 at 3:20 pm
i think what your doing is by far one of the coolest things ever. your going to make DJs out of us all.
November 9th, 2005 at 4:23 pm
Is the “Live” software something you would purchase separatly, or is it on the DVD/CD you are distributing?
November 9th, 2005 at 5:14 pm
As if I wasn’t anxiously anticipating the arrival of White Limousine enough already! What an AMAZING idea! By far, the most brilliant thing I’ve ever heard any musician come up with! Figures that you’re the one to do it! :)
(I am SO glad that we finally have a DVD-rom on this computer now!)
You continue to impress and amaze me with your ideas and talents!
:) -Tammy
November 9th, 2005 at 6:08 pm
Duncan,
I wanted to tell you last evening….
Thanks ever so much for the Inspiration which you give each and everyday to us all…..
You know the rest,
Michele :) Love….
November 9th, 2005 at 7:42 pm
I’m not one for hyperbole but… this is the greatest idea in the history of mankind.
As a huge fan of Live already and a DJ in my own right, I can’t wait to get my hands on the CD/DVD.
ps. The EP is excellent >:]
November 9th, 2005 at 8:16 pm
The news about this album just seems to be getting as close to Uphoria as it possibly can. Not only a new CD, but also a DVD?
Awesome news! That sound you hear is me applauding my decision to be a Duncan fan.
Duncan, you so rock.
November 9th, 2005 at 9:26 pm
That is so very Cool. Thanks Duncan for doing this. I can’t wait. I just bought the Maudio Black Box so I have demo version of Live. Still working on leaning it though. You Rock Man. Thanks Again!!
November 9th, 2005 at 11:53 pm
Wow, what an incredible idea! Thank you so very much, Duncan.
I just have a question: will the record option be working on the version of the software included in the DVD so that we can add our own extra layers?
This is amazing. You are awesome.
Cheers,
Maria
November 10th, 2005 at 12:56 am
I would join in the parade but… no, i will join in the parade. That is probably the most awesome idea i have ever heard. I doubt i will use it, because that is not where my talents lie, but it is still pretty cool.
November 10th, 2005 at 9:36 pm
That’s fucking tight!
November 11th, 2005 at 12:32 am
Like most everyone else….I think this is a innovative, great idea! And I love that you are excited to hear other people’s take, and want to hear their mixes…talk about connecting with your listeners….you take the cake!
I am looking forward to messing around with it a bit….
best wishes….clara
November 11th, 2005 at 1:19 pm
Duncan, you just increased my respect for your work ten-fold. :)
November 11th, 2005 at 2:38 pm
Wow, I am really looking forward to the White Limousine now. It might just never come out of the CD player!
November 11th, 2005 at 3:13 pm
Mercgurl: Assuming I found the correct product on M-Audio’s site, Live should be Mac-compatible.
November 11th, 2005 at 5:00 pm
vismajor, thanks for the info… I can’t wait to work with Live once WL comes out. :)
Cheers,
Catherine
November 11th, 2005 at 10:46 pm
i can finally have my white limousine RAVE!
November 12th, 2005 at 5:14 am
interesting…
November 12th, 2005 at 3:38 pm
What an excellent idea Duncan! Espically for those of us who are very much into music but don’t play any instruments.
Garbage did a similar thing when they released “Beautiful Garbage” a few years ago, except there’s was the tracks of the song chopped up into samples. They held a contest for the best remix where the people visiting the site could vote. There were some very excellent remixes there that I still listen to.
Can’t wait to try out the software on your music… Sooooo excited for something new from you!
November 12th, 2005 at 6:37 pm
It feels like christmas!!! This is going to be so much fun!!!!
November 14th, 2005 at 3:05 pm

(and yea! the propositions were defeated in california!)
an early happy thanksgiving to all.
November 17th, 2005 at 12:57 am
Sorry to hear you gave into your fears.
November 17th, 2005 at 6:59 pm
What????
That does not seem to make sense????
I don’t think Duncan is fearful of anything being the Buddhist he is., as am I.
November 18th, 2005 at 9:51 am
Happy Birthday Duncan
Close your eyes, Make a wish…
November 18th, 2005 at 9:57 am
“I was kind of afraid of committing to a record that?s mainly ‘programming’”…
Buddhists can be afraid of things. It usually raises the issue of desire (IE. desire to not be afraid anymore), but most Buddhists are working towards not feeling desire and are not actually there.
I do not quite have the dedication to be a total Buddhist, but I am very much invested in the tenets and philosophies. I am curious, what makes you say that Buddhists cannot be fearful of anything?
- Russell
November 18th, 2005 at 10:00 am
Ah yes, it appears a “Happy Birthday” is in order! Hope your day is great, Duncan!
November 18th, 2005 at 10:04 am
WOW. I can?Lt wait to grab mine. By the way, just listened to White Limousine?Ls Nothing Fades song avaiable on streaming, way to go Duncan. Very nice song, loved the “stretched guitars” on the background, they?Lre so like your style and yet, always refreshing. Cheers from Brazil.
November 18th, 2005 at 10:07 am
Hehehehe… forgot to ask two really important things.
1- Are you planning to tour in Brazil?
2- Will your music videos be featured on this DVD?
Thanks!
November 18th, 2005 at 10:33 am
I suppose since there are others who’ve already done it, I’ll do it too.
Have a wonderful birthday Duncan.
Your impact in the world, spans more and more each day-
the beauty and the calm that you bring is irreplaceable.
Thank you. (and to your parents ;D )
We all love what you’ve done with the last 36 years,
I’m sure that won’t change as you embark into the future.
Ears will alway be perked for you, Duncan. :)
Okay. Enough seriousness.
Eat cake!

Happy Birthday Duncan!
I hope you have a great day today and everyday for the rest of your life! Your fans love you, especially me. You’re a lucky man.
Love You Always,

I love the mine / yours concept!
Also I wanted to wish you a happy birthday! I hope that you have a wonderful birthday =) I had planned on sending a gift before your birthday but am only adding the finishing touches tonight so it will be late. Better late than never right?

Happy Birthday from The Brothers Ceballos!!
November 18th, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Dear Duncan,
Did you ever figure out what you want from Amsterdam? I think maybe a Print. Van Gogh or Rembrandt? Must I use my own judgement, I shall get both, :) :) though I lean towards Rembrandt…..
Anyway, I woke up today feeling so very great. I went to work and told people outside in the Children’s playground and the school how great I felt. I told them, “I just feel so great today,” that today was a special day, someone’s birthday and that I am so happy to have this person in my Life…. You know, it’s one of those rare days, when you wake up and feel so, so good. Great and you just don’t know why. (?) It’s one of those fine Buddhist moments, (all day) when the entire world is so at Peace. Happy Birthday Duncan and Thank you for making my day so special.
Love,
Michele xo
November 19th, 2005 at 2:54 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUNCAN!!! A thousand thank yous for your gift of music that you share to us. Cheers to you!
November 19th, 2005 at 3:50 am
Wow! Cant wait to remix a song and post it.. this is a brilliant idea.. As they say, MASSIVE!
November 19th, 2005 at 3:09 pm
I like your approach. It’s refreshing and innovative. In America, typically artists and actors try to remove themselves from the ‘lower’ echelon. I’ve noticed that other countries don’t do it to the same extent. This just proves you are so cool. I knew you rocked before, but now… I have a new found respect. I don’t really do music, however there’s a first time for everything.
November 19th, 2005 at 10:20 pm
Wow, can’t wait till the release date =).
BTW, Happy Birthday, hope it’s a day of wonder and surprise.

This is great news! Not only are you coming out with this DVD, but I just realized they have Live for Windows as well! I’m really looking forward to working with some of those songs, I loved the ones released on the EP. Unfortunately I won’t be the one to make your minimalist electronic record dream come true..

I made my birthday wishes on SheikFreik and MySpace. Hope they didn’t go unnoticed.
I am elated to finally hear a release date! Duncan, I hope you won’t be upset to know that I have “White Limousine” streaming on my MySpace profile. If it bothers you, please let me know, and I’ll remove it. :)

Well, I have three Cat’s. They are still pretty much on the inside.
One of my Cat’s, Honey…..tries to run out everytime I open the door.
(Not a good thing to do on such cold days)…I say it’s warmer on the inside.
Cheers D.

Howdy,
I’ve been using Reason for a few years now (currently 3.0.4) with Nuendo 3.0 With those and a Line 6 Variax 500 and a Vetta II amp I’ve cleaned out most of my equipment in the studio. Amazing how flexible Reason is. I have a ton of refills (the mellotron and the new Drumkit 2.0 are amazing). I think it would be cool to have your original Reason song files to load in and remix.
BTW you know what is really weird? If you look at the demo videos from Propellerhead’s tutorial website http://www.sonicstate.com/news/shownews.cfm?newsid=2007#
.. James Bernard almost looks like you :)
Anyways Duncan..really looking forward to the release and for whenever you play close to MA.

November 28th, 2005 at 2:19 am
Ugh..I know I’m probably posting this in the completely wrong place so forgive me but I just wanted to ask if you had considered doing anything live for XM satellite radio. They have bands/artists come in to do shows either alone or for an audience (usually on XM 50 The Loft) and it would be a huge boost for you I think. ‘Nickel Creek’ just did one as did ‘Without Gravity’ (both amazing groups if you haven’t heard them yet you must!).
November 28th, 2005 at 3:01 pm
Blackwuzzy- I have a cat named Tiger that tries to run out the door, also. What’s the deal with our kitties?? It makes me feel like a bad cat-mom, that my kitty is always trying to run away. I can’t let him out because his previous owner had him de-clawed before they gave him back to the shelter. He can even open the door by himself with this jumpy thing he does with his paws. Maybe Honey and Tiger are trying to find each other.
November 28th, 2005 at 5:37 pm
I’m very much looking forward to testing out the Remix DVD. I’m curious to know if I will be able to do further editing in Cubase, or if I will be confined in the Live space.
November 29th, 2005 at 2:52 am
Any news on white limo? I’m quite anxious about the release date. If we pre-order via the site, being in africa will i have to wait 6 - 8 weeks from the official release date to receive it? Anyway, just thinking out loud. Can’t wait…….

I am dying for you to write something new. :)
Have a nice day Duncan. Again, Happy Holidays.

Duncan, thank you so much for Fantastic Toys. It’s hands down one of your best and most beautiful songs yet. It makes me cry, so you did a perfect job. That one really needs to see the radio, EVERYONE should hear it.
December 1st, 2005 at 1:11 am
Funny, you should say that. The same effect it had on me. I could not stop the tears from running down my face & cheeks, upon my first few listens at home… I cried like a Baby…at it’s Beauty.
