Yellow Umbrella Tour

Hi,

Since some of you naughty people can’t seem to stay on topic (i.e. the previous thread) this post will be a place for comments regarding the Yellow Umbrella Tour. As for myself, let me just say that I think the YUT cause and the people involved are really great - but there are complications and difficulties in putting on a show with four diverse acts that have made me a little distracted on certain nights. So, I’ll agree with some of the previous comments about the shows and try to rise above those distractions.

Lots of Love.
DS

p.s. I think the Yellow Umbrella Tour is a wonderful thing. And I enjoyed seeing all of the talent up there on the stage last night. No complaints from me… You guys rock. As does your scarf…:D

I think we’ve all been distracted at times..so we forgive you..lol
Although, I must say I am really impressed w/ YUT’s cause, and I have been telling all the women I know about the hpv test.

Of course, it was a bogus hearing you play!

I’m looking forward to tonight’s show.

I do have some concerns about the Asylum in Portland, ME though. They don’t have a website, you can’t buy tickets online anywhere it seems, there’s no door times listed, and when you call their box office number, all you get is a recording that tells you who’s going to be there….in September.

I’ll still show up around 7-7:30 to be safe, but I’m kinda nervous about the lack of information (considering I’m driving almost 3 hours from Worcester, MA to see this)

Oh well, I have high hopes. If the show’s anything like the one I saw a few months back in Northampton, MA, it should be good. Rip it sick, DS.

  6. Afterall Says:

Finally a post about the tour! I was meaning to say what a great show the Minneapolis show was, but to your point, I wanted to stay on topic. It had been awhile since you had been to Minnesota. I saw you the last time you were at the Fineline when it was just you and Gerry, that was a great show as well.

Anyway, I like your new stuff and I bought the EP that you had made available for purchase. I think my favorite on that EP is “Fantasic Toys…”.

I was blown away by the 2 songs you and David Poe played together and really looking forward to what comes of that. The harmonies were incredible. You both have very good voices and you don’t see that in too many bands.

Anyway, looking forward to when you come back again!

  8. katetay04101 Says:

Wow, talk about a dis… Asylum is a townie joint, not some stupid venue for the uninformed and underclassed. It’s unique because it isn’t all about who’s playing, where and when, how much are the tickets, and are they shady for not doing the things the “right” way. Damn, that’s just so harsh for somebody to say. I think it would almost make me mad enough to say something mean, but my irritation is just not that big-a deal, you know? Not every night club that he plays is the same. Ever heard of Thursday? They played there. Ever hear of the Barenaked Ladies, or Paula Cole, or Chemical Romance? If the fact that thye have decided to keep it real, keep it low-tech, if that’s the qualifications for sketchy, we won’t talk about the last time he came and played at the Stone Coast Brewpub, for a crowd that all seem to have won their tickets and knew exactly one song of his. Oh, even though we’re clearly back-woods material, we do have those things, those, oh what do you call them??, oh, parking garages. Yeah, we have those…

  9. katetay04101 Says:

… and we’re fans, too, everyone of us that buys a ticket to get in to show support for Duncan and his cause. I’m pretty sure that not where you were going, right? That you’re a bigger fan because you’re driving a long way to see him, and because we live here our respect for him and his work is less than? Oops, got a little madder there, couldn’t decide whether it was because you could dis a place Duncan is playing, or if you think it’s not quite good enough for him. What an awful thing to say about a venue you’ve never been to. That’s just mean, and judgemental.

  10. Afterall Says:

  11. GiaGrace Says:

I thought you were completely awesome at the Chicago tour. I couldn’t exactly say you seemed distracted. And the songs that you did were awesome. No complaints here at all. I just feel lucky that I got to see you and meet you.

  12. Tansy Says:

    DS,
No one can be 100%, all the time.
It must be even harder with a microphone there, announcing every slip.

Now, don’t get me wrong- I understand the mentality of “I bought this ticket, I traveled so far to see this person, and my expectations weren?t met.” But Duncan, they’ve gotta understand that you’re just a man with guitar. That you’ve been riding the road, sleeping probably not-so-well on a cramped bus, playing the same songs for the last six(ish) months, and generally not being ‘Duncan at home.’ Anyone would eventually crack.

I know it?s your job to appease your customers, and it?s in your nature to be as perfecting as possible (what artist isn?t?). But Duncan, cut yourself some slack. You?ve had one hell of a work-year.
People who love what you do, will (and should) sympathize.

Hope you get to rest up in the coming weeks.
    Keep sweet,
    Susann (& her delicious tea)

    Hmmmm, interesting Topic.

As you know Dear Duncan, I have been to more than just a few of your shows. I saw you 3 times over the Summer months and most recently, the YUT in Philly (included). It was one of the very Best shows ever. You know you really must not much yourself to be such an absolute perfectionist every show. I know that you do, but that kind of stress is not good for anyone….You included. We all know how very hard you work at making “ALL” of your Fans happy and that is such an understatement. You give 1000% plus of yourself at every show. We are all only human, and yes, even you. Don’t be so hard on yourself. The Fan’s who aren’t so happy with a show, or two here or there, well- maybe they just need to get out and see you more often. (See more of your shows) Maybe they just don’t get it, nor understand your Music and who you are. It’s not always about every song, or about being absolutely perfect each and every show. It’s not about a perfect setlist. It’s about you as a Person and how very much you give of yourself, each and every show…..Some Fans, maybe just miss it….because they are too busy talking, requesting too many songs, trying to make you into a Commercial Artist, which you’ll never be…. To truly apppreciate you as an Artist, is to truly appreciate True Art/Music/Composition & Songs…..but even more so than that, is to understand you as a person. You give so much of yourself, every show….. It is hardly worth it to post a Post like this, though you being the Kind Musician and Sensitive Artist which you are always….still have taken the time to say you care. I know, that you care about your Fans more than any Artist that I have ever known. Anyone who finds themselves very disappointed in a Duncan show, well shame on you. Maybe they have to examine, what real Art/Music really truly is. No words could ever describe how you have accomplished this task….each and every time, each and every show…. in “Your Own Special Way.” Thanks so much Duncan. I have been to many, many shows…and I for one, am NEVER disappointed in you. Your the very Best and should know it…..I don’t think you know how much you really are appreciated in the world today….and the impact you make for the better. You make the World a happier, more positive place to live in…. Thanks for your Never Ending Efforts….They go very noticed for all of us who see…..

No apologies ever needed Duncan….but, I’ll just remind you again…because I see you have forgotten today….how very much we Love you…. !!!!!!

Much Love and Peace always from my Heart,
    Michele :) XO

Duncan I really enjoyed the performances of all the artists in Milwaukee and Minneapolis. You sounded great, in fact you sounded incredible in Minneapolis, you were so ON that night! I have to say that David Poe is also incredible, and I am looking forward to the band that you are in together, your voices blend so well together!
    Thanks for two great shows!

I went to the NYC show, Duncan you rock! I work in the LIfe Skills class
in Bucks County, Pa, I used the concert as show and tell. I showed them the braclet they where giving out and told them what the tour was about, in an easer version for them. It was very cute hearing them ask more about it, and wanted to know who you are, very fun show and tell.

    Thanks Lisa

I can see a little negativity up in here…

Anyone know why people get so upset over little things that aren’t worth the energy?

From all the shows I have seen DS play at whether they have a website or not have been good places.

I’ll end this by saying that some people just go looking for fights/drama.

  25. stasis Says:

    Hey Katetay,

I wasn’t trying to dis the Asylum. I don’t think providing show information is too much to ask.

    Were you at the show?

Here’s a review of how the Portland, ME show went for me.

I showed up around 7 to find out that doors weren’t until 8 (one of those things that would have been nice to know). My gf and I stroll around downtown Portland to kill the time, get harassed by some drunk guy belting out “Radiohead - Creep” and we head back to Asylum around 8:30. We get in just before David Poe goes on.

A small crowd is there already and David Poe is great at speaking with everyone and making things feel really intimate. He plays for about 30 minutes and keeps things pretty mellow throughout. I really liked the song with the refrain, “It brings you JOY…” Good stuff.

Next up is Sarah Bettens. I really can see her making it big. Besides Duncan, she’s my favorite act of the night. She plays 5 songs, my favorite being the one where all the lyrics are like little lines of advice ala, “Avoid extremes” and “Always wear a helmet.” The melody was gorgeous and the whole song was very motherly. I was moved.

From there its a short video explaining cervical cancer and the story of Christine Baze’s battle (and victory) over it. She gets on stage immediately after the video. Her band consists of her on a electric keyboard, a standing bass player and drums. They definitely change the mood up from the previous two singer/songwriters on their acoustics. Christine’s music is almost techno-ish, with drum-and-bass rhythms and her electric keyboard. It’s all very jazzy and I can dig it. :)

Finally, it’s now just after 11PM and Duncan comes on. He’s sadly sans-Spooky Ghost, but he’s got his excellent bassist and drummer with him. Duncan sticks to almost all newer material (which is great for me), but occassionally dips into classics. I’m sure I’ll be attacked for this, but I still don’t like when Duncan plays covers, even if they are the Smiths or Radiohead. To me it’s like Duncan’s even better than those acts (or at the least, a totally different sound), so why go there where his original stuff is just as good (if not better, in my opinion.) Anyway, besides “Reel Around the Fountain” and the closer, “Fake Plastic Trees,” the only other complaint I could have was his duets with David Poe. While David seems hilarious and like a great guy, the two songs they did together were just kinda lifeless. They’re certainly not bad songs by any means, but they didn’t really move me in anyway. When it was back to Duncan and his band, things were on fire though.

His version of “Start Again” was simply the best I’d ever heard it -his guitar solo was so crazy. Great stuff. The other highlights of the set for me were “She Runs Away,” which is still probably my favorite DS song, and when he encored with “Mr. Chess” I was thrilled. I didn’t think I’d ever get to hear that one in concert. He brought a little silver mermaid figurine with him on stage when he came back to do his encore, and so I honestly thought he was going to do “Sad Stephen’s Song.” You know, “..And there were mermaids, weren’t there? Sweet, silver mermaids…” Oh well, maybe another time.

The show ended around 12:15, and by that time some of the older crowd had already taken off -their loss. Duncan was great, a fantastic performance overall. His opening acts were super solid, and I wouldn’t mind seeing any of them on their own. It was a great night.

  26. ILoveChomsky Says:

The Irving Plaza show was excellent. Absolutely no complaints here.

As for the cause, starting next year, a cervical cancer (HPV) vaccine will be available from Merck and GlaxoSmithKline. The vaccine is highly effective in protecting against HPV. Whether the vaccine will be placed on the list of recommended vaccinations for children remains unclear, in part because social conservatives are concerned it may encourage teen sexual activity. (Right. Just like the Hepatitis B vaccine did. Give me a break.)

  27. Topaz Says:

Excellent review Stasis. The only thing I’ll disagree with is that the songs Duncan and David did together were lifeless. Wow. ??? But I wasn’t there that night, just the night before…. Maybe it was an off night for those particular songs? I don’t know. Every single time I’ve heard them do those songs together, I’ve thought…”Wow”…Absolutely amazing…Such beautiful songs and their voices just sound SO beautiful together…and the guitar…ahhh….I’m swooning, and can’t wait for this unnamed rockband album(is unnamed with two n’s??).

    Laura

  28. Topaz Says:

Ooh…also want to say that I enjoy Duncan’s covers.

  29. Scoobi_FreeBSD Says:

I love Duncan’s covers too! Were it not for those great songs I would have never known about the wonderful Beach Boys’ “Surf’s Up”, Sylvian’s “Orpheus” or Mitchell’s “Court And Spark” (yah, yah…I lead a very sheltered musical life). I now want to learn more about all of their works, which is one of the primary benefits of covers. I also get a small glimpse into the kinds of songs one of my all-time favorite artists may have in his car CD player :-) (Speaking of which, you’re killin’ me Duncan! 8 of 12 slots in my CD changer are yours and you’re releasing another one next year!)

I guess people sometimes forget that you have like 1,000 fuckin things going on your head besides the tour. Let’s see your new album getting released, the stuff with Sater, projects with David Poe{which is a ass kickin artist}. Dude keep the show{and interest} the same. Plus that’s bullshit someone would call your girlfriend a distraction. I bet when she’s at the show you have more inspiration. Well I said my two words for the day. Take care Duncan.

I have seen tons of DS concerts this year…yes, from the beginning and very closely until the end of the YUT. None of the shows are a disappointment to me because I go in with the thought that “I do not expect them to put on a stellar performance night after night.” They work hard preparing for the shows, getting to the shows…many times not getting the proper amount of rest, etc. Therefore, am just extremely happy when they get up on stage/perform and really, really try to do their best(as they always do). To DS, Doug, Gerry and Jeff…HOORAY…you guys are truly, truly the BEST and thank you for the hard work and the great music…CHEERS to more…looking forward to the concerts next year :-)

    Lots of Love/Hugs/Kisses…

Thank you to Mr. Poe, Sarah Bettens, Christine Baze, Curt Hines, Jesse C, Steve, to all the other musicians and let’s never forget…Cheers to Phil & Katie for their tireless efforts nightly during the tour…HOORAY to the excellent music and the YUT cause…best of luck…enjoy the time-off, you guys/gals deserve so much :-)

Saw the YUT show in Somerville last night, so I thought I’d throw in my two cents.

Duncan- as always you and your band simply rocked. Even with the distractions you managed to keep your cool, and the effort you guys put in show after show have paid off big. Like I said, y’all simply rocked.

Cheers as well to Sarah, David, and Christine for equally awesome performances. Together you guys (you too Duncan) created one mind-blowing concert. At least for me, anyway.

Can’t wait to see you again next year when you promote White Limousine, I know it’ll be great (distractions or not). Till then, enjoy your well-deserved break (after the last YUT date, of course).

    Peace,
    Catherine

    On a side note:
In regards to you and David thinking of what to call your still-untitled band (you were asking for suggestions last night), my husband thought you should call yourselves “Poe Shizzle”. It’s your last names with a Snoop Dogg-esque twist. Personally, I think it’s kind of a dumb name and I’ll never get why he came up with that. It almost makes that “Two Angry Lesbians” suggestion that someone threw out sound good. (Many apologies if I offended anyone.)

I do hope you find a good band name though. Much luck to you there.

And one more thing: Duncan, I think you still owe me a wrestling match as you promised back in June in Northampton. Let me know if you’re considering it. ^_^

Well, Hello there! I shall give my review of the wonderful show in somerville last night. I was that creepy beared fellow you were shy about putting his arm around after the show Duncan, Hi.

I thought the show was great! I’ve never had the chance to see Duncan live. And the fact that i was only a couple rows away, dead center, made it that much more exciting. Somerville Theatre is a great venue, small and discreet.

So, Sarah went on first, and she was marvelous….that word can’t even describe it…..Sarah has this great voice and all of the songs were great.

David’s up next….at first i thought “wow, this guy looks like one of my old college buddies.” and when he spoke, it was so calm and soothing. And then he began to play, and it was all the same. Not in a bad way though. I liked it a lot. Very soothing music. And a quirky personality in between tunes. And then i got to talk to David after the show. My girlfriend said his smile was so enchanting. And softspoken. But he offered some good advice for myself…and i’m just really glad i got to meet and talk to him.

Christine came out and played. I had never heard of her…and she blew my mind. I just loved the feel that Steven the drummer gave. I said like a techno feel, somone earlier said drum and bass…that’s it.

Duncan, EXCELLENT!!!!! browsing thru the blogs above, i noticed comments about how he made mistakes or wahtever…..any-who! I think that if you want to goto a concert and see how similar to the CD this artist can sound, you’ve come for the wrong reason. You goto a show to see the artist be JUST THAT: an artist, a performance artist. he plays and sings and every show is different. whether they’re the same songs he’s playing around with or new ones each night, it’s a different experience every time. I goto a show to see how the artist works out the songs he’s perfected in the studio. that’s what i feel the studio is for. and when you perform you’re working out the song, opening new doors to new songs, to new sounds. I like to goto shows to see how the musician, artist, performer, whatever, i like to see how they play each song. And Duncan and his band did a great job!!!!

although, i didn’t understand why you opted to have 2 drummers out there last night Duncan. I understand if you want another great musician on stage with you to make your songs that much more interesting. but personally, i didn’t feel as though your buddy Jay Belrose was adding anything extra to your performance.

sidenote: you and David are hilarious together…how bout a new band name every performance? last night “A Night With Duncan and David”

i’m so glad i went to the yellow umbrella tour, i had a great time, and it was a great group of musicians who put on an awesome show!!! I’m glad i got to meet you Duncan, you’re a very cheery fellow, and continue to make beautiful music!!

I just went to the Summerville Theatre and loved your show. It was so laid back I felt like we were all so very close. Like we got to see a personal side of all the performers. Can I tell you that when you and David Poe played together it was incredible. Your voices sounded great especially during the song “death”. Me and my boyfriend sat there and couldn’t beleive how amazing it was. You both are very talented.
I am a friend with Jesse who was playing with Christine. Jesse plays for us on Wednesday nights. I think that it is a great thing that you got involved with this cause. I know that they all appreciated it.

  44. BrickyardBlues Says:

    Hello DS and all others,

I must admit to being furious. I only became aware of the YUT tour yesterday and, being on the west coast, missed all of the dates out here. To compound matters, besides missing the chance to see Duncan live, I am also a big Sarah Bettens (and K?s Choice) fan. The prospect of seeing the pair on the same stage in the same night kills me.

Sarah played Seattle a couple of months back in an acoustic tour in support of her solo debut, Scream (which is a must have) and she was simply stunning. I would also suggest tracking down her live acoustic performance for XM Radio?s Loft Sessions. (I have a copy if anyone is interested).

All of this being said, I now must grovel and beg that the YUT tour add an extra date in Seattle or at the very least, Duncan and Sarah should tour together again in the VERY near future.

As this is my first post, I have to indulge the fan in me. I have all of DS?s albums and have been a big fan since the first hearing Reasons For Living back in the summer of ?97. (I borrowed the album and listened to it the first time on random).

I actually kindof misplaced Duncan in my active rotation for a long while and have only recently rediscover how much I love his music. He has been, at various times, the exclusive soundtrack of my life.

In lieu of rambling on and on, I?ll just say a very big thank you for Duncan?s music and the influence it has had on me.

  48. zzone Says:

Well I’m only writing this because someone needs to be honest…everyone on these threads writes to you (Duncan) like you are one step away from jumping off a bridge.
I love your music, and I loved seeing you in North Hampton, MA this past summer. But the past Somerville show…”let’s just say it”, Sucked! And I know you agree there was NO energy in the place when you finally came on. Little of the suckiness actually had to do with you though in your defense. First off, three opening acts..and a video is a bit much…I was there at 7:30 and didn’t see you till 10:30. How much attention span are we the fans suppose to have, especially late on a Sunday night? I guess it is my fault for not knowing what the YUT was, cause I wasn’t expecting having to sit through such mind numbing music in order to see you play. Then when you finally come on stage, guitars are out of tune, lyrics are forgotten, low noises are coming from the bass drum, drummers are missing!, people are leaving, and all the energy had been killed and stomped on by Christine’s repetitive and mundane music.
I know you are probably as frustrated as everyone else at the lack of energy when you finally came on stage. I’m only mentionaing all of this, because I read a couple threads about how “great” the Somerville show was, and I felt it was my obligation to give you an honest, unsugar-coated opinion of the show. I guess I am one of the few fans who takes the time to read your blogs, but doesn’t think Duncan can do no wrong.
My only advice is avoid being the headliner for a four-act show next time…it is too much for one sitting. Obviuosly the show did not hinder me from listening to your music, it was just a long, boring, uninspired night for me, which I would like to forget.
