I saw those guys play live for the first (and only) time at a free outdoor concert at college (Penn State), and they were just awesome. I do owe them a cd purchase or two, because I must admit that I am guilty of a few “less than legal” downloads and i need to pay dues for the bands that are actually good.
October 18th, 2005 at 7:36 pm
is the album more like Asleep in the Back or Cast of Thousands or ___ ? i loove the former.
thanks for anyone’s review.

Love Elbow! One of my favourite acts of all time. One of the best shows I ever saw was when Elbow opened up for the Doves. A lot of their b-sides are completely incredible & worth checking out (namely, Lucky with Disease, Love Blown Down, & George Lassoes the Moon)
Also, for those who are digging on Duncan’s new style, a fellow who goes by the moniker Magnet has a new album available in the UK & Europe. It’s called “Tourniquet” and you can preview it here: http://wmi.nujuice.com/
It is AMAZING! Not out in the US yet, but definately in my top 5 albums of the year.
October 19th, 2005 at 3:57 pm
SRY110, OMG, I played in that same concert in a band called Mordecai. Yeah I got one of Elbow’s free demo’s at that show. Not bad, they get played on the only good radio station here in Cbus.
October 20th, 2005 at 9:18 am
Mmm….. will check it out. Lately I’ve been listening intensely to Spoon, Doves, Creeper Lagoon, Me and Trashcan Sinatras (plus I just got the new Depeche Mode album -and tickets!- too… hehehe =D ).
And also, I recommend Joseph Arthur’s new album “Our Shadows Will Remain” and Jeff Klein’s “The Hustler”. I saw them perform about a month ago and it was a very good show. Amaizing what a guy and his guitar (plus a copuple of gizmos) can do on stage. I also saw Death Cab For Cutie down in Ann Arbor, MI last friday, and I guess for me the best part of the show was the acoustic version (or like in the album) of “I Will Follow You Into The Dark”.
Sweet! =D

Love the new picture. Hott. :D
So, I pre-ordered my “Leaders of the Free World” c.d. yesterday…CANNOT wait to give it a listen. To tide me over while waiting, I took my “Asleep in the Back” and “Cast of Thousands” c.d.’s back out and have been listening all day yesterday and today. To me, Elbow’s music just has SO much depth. And it’s insanely cool, unique, mature, and sexy. Wow. And Guy Garvey certainly knows how to “bring it”. Heh. O.k. Enough of that…
Question for you Duncan…How’s that “Asleep in the Back” cover coming along? :D Yeah, I know…woodwind section and all that jazz, but the lyrics and melody alone are just so beautiful…and you could do your own take on it. It’d be superb. Ooh, also “Coming Second”. I could picture you guys all jamming out to that. Maybe Gerry, Doug, and Jeff could do the crazy chanting-thingy. And Gerry could lend his spooky guitar sounds…
And then from “Cast of Thousands”, you could do “Whisper Grass”, “Fugitive Motel”, “Lay Down Your Cross”, or the very sexy “I’ve Got Your Number”…
Ah…the possibilities are endless. But yes…I’d love LOVE it if you ever did an elbow cover…obviously. Sorry for the rant but you got me all excited with your Elbow post…

What’s your favorite song off LOTFW?
It isn’t available here eIther, so I too, had to order. What I’ve heard so far is amazing …
Magnet/Tourniquet is a must also!

Bought it from iTunes… wow, very niiice!

Hey, if you are a Duncan Fan, check out a similiar talented artist at www.myspace.com/janilane click on Very Fine Line. It is from a Jabberwocky project he did back in 96. It was stolen from the studio and bootlegged out. It actualy went up to a $100 on Ebay. Jani is finally going to release the cd after rerecording the tunes. Please go beyond the “Cherry Pie” stigma. Lane is the cleverest lyric writer next to Duncan and Jim Croce. John Lennon is not too shabby either.
October 20th, 2005 at 9:47 pm
LOTFW is a fantastic album… They are playing at the Hiro Ballroom (Maritime Hotel) in NY on November 3rd, day after Duncan at Irving Plaza… It’s gonna be a good 2 days…

Nice Picture Duncan.
:) Need I say more?

If we have to listen to someone besides
Duncan- hehe -
Try the music of David Mead~
Excellent songwriter and beautiful voice!
And the band Smog for something a little different…
Btw, Smog is actually a guy named Bill Callahan.

Michele, it’s too difficult to compare them to anyone else. They’re very unique. You just need to go buy a c.d. I’m sure you’ll like it. Get them in the order they came out…just because. Start with “Asleep In The Back”… Roll a fat one(I kid! :D…but it is sort of that kind of music), light some candles, and listen on headphones, or at least very loud. There are lots of layers to the music and each listen reveals a little more. You’ll hear some very cool use of instruments, and Guy Garvey is one of the sexiest singers EVER. His perfectly placed mm’s, ah’s, and uh’s, and little whispery words snuck in here and there…*sigh* SO sexy it makes me want to scream! *whew* Is it getting hott in here?? :D
Seriously, it’s very inspiring, delicious music, capable of flinging your emotions all over the place. The kind of music that makes you close your eyes, throw your head back, and sing at the top of your lungs…and sometimes throw your arms up in the air…and sometimes it makes me cry…
Wow I can’t wait to hear this new album. Wa! I love Elbow.
Laura
October 23rd, 2005 at 11:29 pm
wowwww. That sounds very cool Laura. After you hear the new one…Let me know if you could pick one or two out of the bunch…as the Best? (Not that you’ll be able to do that by any means), but let me know…..
I need a Fat one though?
Thanks D & Laura.

I looked them up last night and seem to have a pretty good idea now.
Still, let me know what you think out of the three works. (Or are there 4?)
Thanks,
bw

Top,
I was listening to “Asleep in the Back” tonight as I was waiting for my Pizza order to get finished. It sounded pretty good, except….lots of the sounds started sounding the same…..so I opted not to buy it, without a further listen. I’m assuming that the newer stuff is maybe better???
It was cool though. I think I need to give it a further listen….at my local used CD shop.
:) m
October 26th, 2005 at 10:33 am
Really? Hmm…Well then, maybe they’re just not for you. Or maybe it’ll take you a couple of listens…sometimes that’s the case with me. Although, with Elbow, I was smitten my first listen. Hey, I’m a poet! Anyway, I started with “Cast of Thousands” and loved it immediately. Then I picked up “Asleep in the Back” a couple of weeks later…it is now one of my absolute favorite albums on the planet. I ordered, but haven’t yet received the new album, so I have nothing to say about it, other than I’m sure I’ll love it. Funny how when music or something else moves you, you want it to move everyone else, but it oftentimes doesn’t. Just goes to show you, to each his/her own.

Ducnan, can you PLEASE play “Such Reveries” at the Irving Plaza show? PLEASE???????

Sorry for the typo, by the way.
October 26th, 2005 at 4:18 pm
Hey Topaz,
Maybe I’ll go back today and purchase this CD…..or get it for free. I have a CD coming to me, as a frequent purchaser at this place. I just have to find my cards….I was tired…and was giving it a fast listen through headphones last evening…. (Didn’t listen loud enough, nor long enough to all tracks) For the most part, it sounded pretty good. How would you say their next one is? Have you gotten the newest one yet??
Let me know…Afterall, Duncan did recommend it. I do not doubt his taste for a second!!! :)
Thx,
bw

I bought them Both Topaz…..but not the new…not in yet :)
Michele :) ….I think I may like the first one better…..but will let you know..love..

TOTALLY UNRELATED TO ELBOW, YET IMPORTANT:
Thank you so very much Duncan.
I just got back from the Urbana show
(whew! thank goodness for Red Bull!).
The set was lovely, and I was thoroughly impressed with David.
I?d gush at you some more but, alas I really need to get my bum to bed- a10a Asian Philo class awaits my arrival.
Three and a half hours of sleep? You were totally worth it.
Can’t wait to see you… well, tonight I guess. :D
Be safe, eat well. See you soon.

Well, amidst all of this very, very boring “Math Structures” Arithmetic I am doing, this Test due at 9:00 am tomorrow morning……Thank the Heavens for “Elbow.” It’s helping me to keep my Sanity……And, upon further listening, “Cast of Thousands” is topping the other CD, “Asleep in the Back.” From what I have heard thus far. What an amazing CD. I still have to listen to “Asleep in the Back” more…. I bet that their new CD is totally brilliant after hearing these two. They even have a touch of Pink Floyd in thier music as well. How very, very cool… Thanks Duncan for recommending them. :) and to Topaz too. Looks like I will sleep for a few hours and get up in the middle of the morning to work on the rest of this test. Wish me luck. I’m gonna need it. My last class for my BA., and what a pain it is. Thanks for all of the Music in the World to see me through and to you very kind folks. See you all soon….
love, M.

Dear Duncan,
I met you tonight. I gave you a CD. I’m the singer of The Reverent Thieves. I hope you enjoyed my music the way I’ve been enjoying yours for so many years now. You are an incredible musician, singer and man. Love you always…

Duncan-
I enjoyed your show at the Double Doors, you really made my night because I really love your cover of Reel around the fountain, I think maybe I was the only one who was singing along. Fantastic Toys was great as well. Hey all of the songs were beautiful.
We all missed Gerry, but of course, I wish the best in the arrival of his little one.
Thanks for introducing David Poe into my life, he’s so witty, and his songs are touching. Also thanks for introducing the Yellow Umbrella concept (I’d say you introduced it to me b/c if it weren’t for you I wouldn’t known about the concert).
See you in February hopefully :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for playing “Reel Around the Fountain.” Whether you got through it without “f*cking it up” or not, doesn’t really matter- it still sounded so lovely coming from your throat.
The last time I felt that floored/so in awe, was back in ‘97 when you played “Rubbed Out” at my request… You knew how to knock a 14 year old’s socks off then and now, nearly a decade later. :D
Thank you so, so very much.
Hope you like the punkin.
Hope it brings some Halloween-love into the van.
If not, at least give it a good smashing.
Or better yet, have someone make a delicious pie out of it.
(mmm pie)
Anyway, I’m off to make the rest of my dryad costume.
Just had to give you a very sincere thank you.
I’ll see you next time,
Susann

Duncan,
I spoke to you briefly at the Chicago show (I asked about Matt Johnson and !Buddhism!).
If only I’d known that you were an Elbow fan! They are my dear boys. I met them when I lived in London 5 years ago, but the last time I saw them was in Indianapolis 2 years ago. We drank whiskey until 3 am, at which point Guy was starving and ate my left-over burrito that’d been sitting in my back seat for 5 hours, on the condition that he write or dedicate a song to me on the next album. A condition that has not been fulfilled, I might add!
Anyway, I just wanted to say how pleased I am that you are giving them such kudos on your blog.
It was nice to finally meet you. Thanks for a good show.
warm regards,
Holli

Well, “Cast of Thousands” wins hands down.
I cannpt wait to get my hands on Leaders of the Free World, atleast if it’s like this amazing CD. Thanks Duncan. Hope the Tour is going well and that you Guy’s are resting up. Have to take care of yourselves you know.
Much love always. Much Peace,

“Blow you a kiss, it should reach you tomorrow”…….well hopefully sooner. :) :) See you soon D….

Can you believe that October has flown by so, so, quickly like the rest of this year. Wow, it’s hard to ponder indeed. Be well, be safe…..
Oh, it should reach you by night’s end. :)

Hey Duncan, Karen “Again”. it was good seeing you at WCL “Yellow Umbrella tour”. Thanks again for the the picture. But You know sometimes you just want to dance around your living room playing your air-guitar. Check out Daniella Cotton - “Small White Town”, Phoenix - “Alphabetical”,Raul Midon - “State of Mind”, and for some quieter moments, Griffin House - “Lost & Found” (nice voice; he almost sounds like Jeff Buckley on his song Waterfall). Hope you can make it to next summer’s XPN “All About the Music Fest”. Ciao KT

Just back from NYC, so finally getting a chance to post this message…
Sorry to be a downer, but the DS set seemed kind of short at the Magic Stick in Detroit on Oct23. Not sure what was going on, but something seemed “off” that night. What was up with the tuning of every guitar during the set, and also it seemed like the energy of the group was somewhat scattered. Don’t get me wrong, we really love DS music, we’re only writing this because we are concerned with what we saw and heard at the last show.
November 1st, 2005 at 10:25 pm
The last show fecking rocked! Minneapolis, that is…
Before we delve into this topic again, I have to remind you …. For 15 straight days, Duncan and the guys were packed like sardines, on a bus/van with 12 or so people, performing night after night. That grind, is surely to take it’s toll on their energy at some point. They’re not super-human. Like you and I, they’re bound to fall short to a few “off” days as well. It’s tiring. We need to remember to remain empathetic to their schedule. Cut Duncan and the guys a break and show them some love and appreciation for their tireless efforts! :)
November 2nd, 2005 at 7:25 pm
I too was at the Minneapolis show…I have not been to a better concert! I loved the intimate atmosphere, I felt connected to all the performers.
Thank you Duncan for a great set! My sister and I went (front table to your right-if you remember things like that), first time in that venue and first time seeing you…it was a great combination. I was throughly impressed, but not surprised, by your amazing playing and voice. Truly a memorable show…
Best wishes for the rest of the run….and for the “rock band” adventure with David Poe (sounds great to me!)….
November 2nd, 2005 at 9:34 pm
Wow, that “Cast of Thousands” is my Favorite CD at the moment.
I have seen Daniella Cotton….a couple of times now and I think she is NO big deal, sorry.
Better to check out “Elbow.” Thaye really ROCK!!!!
Thanks Duncan.

I was at the show in Detroit in October and it was great! Duncan looked like he is in a great groove and I loved the cool neck scarf that gave his appearance a kind of artistic flair. The music was so tight?hhe played lots of new stuff which is soulfully wonderful and a few of his classics from the Gay 90s, as he referred to them. I am not a complainer as all who are close to me can attest. In fact, I am so easy going that it is sometimes a fault. BUT, I have a very small complaint. Well, it isn?t even a complaint. It?s more of a disappointment. Duncan pointed out his girlfriend in the audience. She was sitting with some friends and they were all laughing too vigorously at anything that was even close to funny. The real problem, however, was that Duncan seemed to be giving a concert to his girlfriend and her friends and he lost touch with the general audience. I saw him a few months ago in Ann Arbor and he was so connected to the audience that the concert was a truly moving experience. The Detroit concert left me a little cold. Again, I am not complaining. Really. I?m not. I think there was an energy that was flowing between Duncan and his girlfriend that made it seem like the rest of the audience was intruding on their personal time. I used to work for my dad when I was growing up and he always forbid me to have my boyfriends come by the job and hang out because he said that it distracted me and it wasn?t comfortable for the rest of the employees because they felt like they were in the way. I guess I now know what he meant. So, when we care enough about someone to give them honest feedback that means we care or we wouldn?t go to the trouble or effort. I care, Duncan. So, in case you don?t want to disappoint your loyal fans and followers, that is my advice, for what it is worth. I came to the concert with a group of guys and girls from Ann Arbor and we all independently came up with the same impression of how the show felt. So, keep on making the music and we will keep listening for all time.

Deja vu…didn’t I already see the above post somewhere?
Anyway, I received my “Leaders of the Free World” c.d. in the mail yesterday and was absolutely THRILLED to listen this morning. This will definitely be an “every-dayer” for a bit. Every song is sooo good. And beautiful. And unique. And rocking. What an incredible group of musicians.
Laura(so so happy with her new c.d.)

Hmmmmm, Looks like I’ll have to order it….
It must be brilliant. (Now that I know who they are)
Kf…maybe you were concentrating too much on Duncan’s girlfriend and not listening to the Music enough that night?? I have never known Duncan to give a performance, not for all in attendence. (That means everyone)…. Never.
