Strings and things

Hello,

We recorded strings for seven songs yesterday here in rainy old London. Simon Hale did some very beautiful arrangements for “Fantastic Toys and Corduroys”, “Hymn”, “Star-field on Red Lines”, “The Dawn’s Request”, “So Gone” and “I Wouldn’t Mind” for the new record. We also did one for “Purple Trail” which is in The Nightingale (the other musical I’m doing with Steven Sater). It was a great day with Gavin Wright leading his most excellent crew.

See you all over the next couple of weeks (I hope),
DS

NY is no sunset strip this week … maybe London is the place to be. Is the album release date still 1 06?

  2. Watermark Says:

And while I have the floor on this dreary (and apparently, desolate) Thursday morning, may I add:

Your dedication to real strings and things is inspiring.

Glad to see that you’re still working with Simon Hale. It’s only 2 weeks until your show in Milwaukee. It’s been 3 long years. I can’t wait.

When I listen to the strings and stuff on “Varying Degrees of Con Artistry, it could be one of the most perfectly arranged pieces of music ever. I love acoustic music and I’m all about the simple pleasures in music, but that song is just so beautiful… on the other side, ‘Out of Order’, it makes me feel like somebody else gets how painful it is when you lose somebody and you WANT to get over it, and you can’t/won’t. Watermark is right- it is inspiring. And so are you.

It’s dreary, rainy, and cold in this London too! I’m really trying for the Toronto show, but I’m getting nervous that it’s not in the cards for me — a very bad weekend for me to take off to a show. If I don’t make it, I guess it’s lucky for you Duncan, but sad for me. :(
Maybe next time you could clear the date with me first, hehe!

    HI Duncan,
I wrote this when I was trying to get over a heart break. I have been a fan for a long time and can’t wait to hear what you will dazzle us with on your new album.

    Table for two

    From the moment I
    Clapped eyes on you
    I knew

I knew you would be my
    Torment
    My heart sickened downfall
    And my only one

    Pushing Pushing at arms length
    I held you
Not letting the possible hurt penetrate my body
    Again and Again the pain

I knew you would be my
    Torment
    My heart sickened downfall
    And my only one

Ringing Ringing You?re on the line
    Broken man from another
    Relationship gone wrong
    Secretly I?m happy knowing
I have you solely to myself
    For a little while

I knew you would be my
    Torment
    My heart sickened downfall
    And my only one

    Simon Hale = Genius
    Duncan Sheik = Genius
Simon Hale + Duncan Sheik = DO THE MATH!!!

With all sincerity, Duncan, I’m very excited that you work with Simon. Allow me a moment to express that I think Simon’s incorporation of orchestral music within contemporary music is second to NONE. You listen to all these other bands/musicians trying to incorporate orchestral music (Creed, John Mayer, Gavin Degraw, you name ‘em), and it comes out so trite and brittle. Simon’s got a magic touch. The work he does with you, Duncan, is even better than the work George Martin did with Beatles. And that’s saying something!! Simon, if you’re listening, I hope that one day I have the distinct pleasure of working with you!!

    Peace,
    Sad Steven

Right now, I’m cooking dinner and my kids are in the upstairs hallway, all set up…they’re laying there in the darkness, with radio, sleeping bags and pillows, all cozy…listening to your S/T album. :) They’re singing their little hearts out. When I went up to check on them a little while ago, they were listening to BOOTY BOOTY ASS-SHAKIN’ something or other on the radio…and one of them said, “Got any Duncan we can listen to?” So, I hooked them up. Ahhh…much better…. :)

    Duncan ~

Not sure if you read all the way down on the board, but if you make it this far congrats :) I am a DJ for a Madison radio station (91.7 WSUM) and was wondering if you’d be interested in doing an on-air interview when you come into town for your Oct 26th show. I will go about the more conventional way of contacting you, but wanted to give it a shot here :-)

Best of luck w/london … rain sounds like a perfect backdrop for strings.

(btw ~ Topaz, that story is hilarious)

    Duncan,
Ahh, I would give anything to be back in rainy London! I lived there for three years and I miss it so much. But I cannot wait until you stop in Dallas or Fort Worth. I have been waiting for 7 years to see you live! Don’t forget to stop in Texas!!

Good Luck with your shows & recording!

Duncan. I just noticed something MISSING in your ‘ List of Sins ‘ I never caught on to myself before and I thought you should get credit where credit is due. One of my all time favorites of yours, a song that was on a soundtrack for a movie called ” Boys and Girls “, called ” Now or Never “. That was a great song. Too bad it never made it to the radio or any album. If you ever consider a B-side album, that should resurface, because alot of people are missing out on that one.

As much as I love nice weather, a Rainy London sounds lovely! I went over there a couple of years ago during the summer time, but I prayed that it would be rainy for the days I would be there, and it did! Fog and everything! Haha! =)

I might come to your show on Friday down in Buffalo, NY! Haha! Mayhem might ensue! =)

    Duncan and the Gang:

I was honored to attend your show in Garwood last night. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the new music and the special CD treat that was available. Your harmonies with Poe were amazing as well.

For everyone out there, my girlfriends and I “stalked” DS to get a photo and the whole band was SO kind and nice. DS finally came down to sign and melted my heart. (his smile washes all your cares away) Such a sweet and kind man with an ass kickin’ mind and soul. Thanks for a great night. White Limos…wow.

I truly do not know how you do it? You were so amazing last night. You are truly a very Special Human Being. Have fun and be safe on the rest of the Tour. Thank you from the depths of my heart & Soul….and thank the Guy’s…..every last one of them again and again for me.

    Much love (You know)
    Much Peace :)

Oh Duncan, you know how to pave way to my heart.
    You fantastic man, you.

So… I’ve decided: I’m coming to both Illinois shows.
As it has been written, so it shall be done.
    You’re worth the gas $$$. :D

Anyway. I found something for you today.
You’ll get it in a week.

    Be safe and keep sane,

    Yo Duncan,

I’ll be checking out the shows in Hartford and Portland, and I’m looking forward to White Limo.

Rip it siiiiick (in an acoustic/spooky/minimal percusion kinda way).

  25. kfpannarb Says:

I was at the show in Detroit last night and it was great! Duncan looked like he is in a great groove and I loved the cool neck scarf that gave his appearance a kind of artistic flair. The music was so tight—he played lots of new stuff which is soulfully wonderful and a few of his “classics” from the “Gay 90s,” as he referred to them. I am not a complainer as all who are close to me can attest. In fact, I am so easy going that it is sometimes a fault. BUT, I have a very small complaint. Well, it isn’t even a complaint. It’s more of a disappointment. Duncan pointed out his girlfriend in the audience. She was sitting with some friends and they were all laughing too vigorously at anything that was even close to funny. The real problem, however, was that Duncan seemed to be giving a concert to his girlfriend and her friends and he lost touch with the general audience. I saw him a few months ago in Ann Arbor and he was so connected to the audience that the concert was a truly moving experience. The Detroit concert left me a little cold. Again, I am not complaining. Really. I’m not. I think there was an energy that was flowing between Duncan and his girlfriend that made it seem like the rest of the audience was intruding on their personal time. I used to work for my dad when I was growing up and he always forbid me to have my boyfriends come by the job and hang out because he said that it distracted me and it wasn’t comfortable for the rest of the employees because they felt like they were “in the way.” I guess I now know what he meant. So, when we care enough about someone to give them honest feedback that means we care or we wouldn’t go to the trouble or effort. I care, Duncan. So, in case you don’t want to disappoint your loyal fans and followers, that is my advice, for what it is worth. I came to the concert with a group of guys and girls from Ann Arbor and we all independently came up with the same impression of how the show felt. So, keep on making the music and we will keep listening for all time.
