Thanks for last night …

It was really great to see so many people at the show last night. I hope some of you caught Micah and Chris as well. I was nervous about the “power trio” thing but it ended up being fun and kind of cathartic. I wish I could have played some new stuff but SXSW is strict about showtimes … I’m going to try to see the Doves tonight and then head back to NYC tomorrow to record vocals with Gerry up at his house. Hopefully we’ll make some progress on the new record. See you all soon.

We were right up in the front watching you rock it!! This was our first time to see you live. Your set was great, the Oasis cover was fun & quite a surprise to everyone I believe! It looked like the “power trio” was having alot of fun up there! I will say that the sound tech at the Drink was terrible. We caught all the other acts leading up to yours and it could have been better sound quality. Looked like you might have been a little frustrated with him during Chris’s set? I know you played 3 sets in a row :) but we wish your set would have been longer and to hear some new material, other than the song on the Japanese release of daylight. When do you think the new CD will be coming out? Thanks for coming to Austin and hope to see you again after the release of the new album:)

    Cheers,
    Szep91

Duncan, you should have seen Doves @ the Bowery, they were frickin awesome. The Magic Numbers, their opening band, were amazing too. You lot would be quite the get for a tour together. Definitely want to see them when they come back in May. Cheers!

I wish I could have been there too. Glad it went well and I look forward to you coming to the DFW area. Tried to talk the hubby into taking the family down to Austin for Spring Break but with the conference in town, he said no, lol. I am excited to see any pictures that were taken by those who where at the show.

Duncan it was my first time to meet you and see your show. Dude you were amazing and so kind. I’m very grateful I saw you perform, I know you rarely make it down to the south. You should come to next year’s SXSW. Oh! Jeff is a cool mother fucker too. He’s funny.

    Take care,
    Ricky

I was up close and personal for all three shows and I found them all to be awesome. I only took a few photos and they’re all candid shots — Duncan actually posed for one, but being the dork that I am, I didn’t get the shot. I also had my DV cam in hand and hoped to video tape the show. Now that you’re excited about possible video, I’ve gotta let you down easy. I asked Duncan between sets if I could video tape him and, being the very sensitive person he is, he was worried that the power trio might not come off as well as the full band. Yes, I wanted to explain that this was just for us Freiks that love him and we wouldn’t care what it sounded like and that I would never let anything that wasn’t of the best quality see the light of day anyway. But… alas, there just wasn’t time to explain, so there is no video of the show. The bitch is, there was a guy video taping about 10 feet behind me. But, I’m still glad I asked… it was good karma. After the show, since I didn’t tape the music, I actually had the temerity to ask Duncan if I could interview him. LOL! What was I thinking?? Again, he was very gracious but asked if we could do the interview the next day or if I could wait. The poor guy was trying to load out off the stage and there was quite a crowd wanting to talk to him. I was beginning to feel like a punk, so I decided to let the whole thing slide. Some things are just meant to be experienced in the flesh…

But, I will give a little review of the night and provide some photos.

It kicked off with Duncan playing backup to Chris Garneau’s keyboards. The sound of those two together was ethereal… when I listen to Chris, I always feel like I’m running out of air, but in a good way. And who knew he was so adorable? The more I hear his music, the more I love it, and seeing Duncan playing with him was super swell.

Micah Green and band (including Duncan, Doug, and Jeff) were having a few power rock moments during the show — I even had to bring out the ear plugs a couple of times! The sound was great and Micah’s lyrics are growing on me. It seemed like everyone was having a good time on stage as well which always makes it fun for the rest of us.

Around the time of Duncan’s set, the small bar was totally packed. I have to say, for once the Austin/Texas crowd did not embarrass me. We were all able to sing along with the music and I think there was no doubt that Duncan felt loved. How could he not when the guy in the back kept screaming “I love you, Duncan!”? I admit, I was a little perplexed at the force in which it was shouted, but… it was all good.

The ‘power trio’ played very tightly and (I’m guessing with the use of the laptop I saw near Doug?) they were able to add other instruments to the sound when needed so the sound was very full. Duncan’s voice was especially good and outside of a missed guitar pedal and the cymbal shots being a little loud, I thought (from a novice perspective) everything went close to perfect for the guys. Duncan did forget some of the lyrics for Wonderwall, but the expression he makes when he’s trying to remember something is quite adorable! Duncan had the lyrics for his songs on separate pieces of paper and between songs he attempted to toss the previous song sheet into the crowd. If he plans to do this again, I’d recommend the following equation… F = m * a ;-)

The SXSW show was awesome! After listening to your music for nearly 10 years, I finally got to see you perform in person. To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and you delivered a terrific performance (three times)! Micah and Chris sounded great (need to buy their cd’s), but the real treat for me that night was Lost on the Moon. I really dig that song, and it was cool to hear it live. Thanks for bustin’ it out.

I also want to say that I had very little idea what kind of person you are. You have been one of my heroes (lyrically and musically) for some time now, and I had seen/heard a few interviews in the past, but there was a tiny fear in me that if I saw you and met you, it would destroy the image of Duncan Sheik that I had in my mind.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

It is obvious to me now that you’re a sincere, generous person who cares about his fans. I can’t get over how nice you were about signing autographs even when you had just explained to us (the small mob) that you had to take care of business and that you’d be back. You signed my old “musician’s notebook”, which hasn’t seen fresh ink in years. That is going to change. Thanks for sharing yourself and for your inspiration.
