The Nightingale
Hi Everyone,
So it looks like we (Steven Sater and I) are going to do another workshop of “The Nightingale” in NYC at the end of November. I doubt it will be open to the public (though I wish it were) but we are are doing the workshop with an eye to doing a “real” production at La Jolla Rep next year. The workshop will be directed by Des McAnuff who won a Tony for his musical theater version of the Who’s “Tommy”.
Happy 4th of July to all you patriots …

Very exciting! Is there anything we can do to change the “not open to the public” decision?

Fantastic! Congratulations!

Not that I would(we would) ever want you to stop making your unbelievably good records…your involvement in theatre…a new niche, yes( you seem to be enjoying it)…in fact, got something from Magical Theatre the other day…Golden Rooms of Nero venue for next year here in SF…and I thought of you and the Oingo Bongo lead singer(???) who does lots of the theme songs for TV shows and what not…really nice to know you are very versatile…BTW, if you are going to make it to dinner at my house for tonight on time…better hop on that plane ASAP… :-)
Cheers!

I’m starting to re-think this again. Well, - You know what I have always had to say about you and Steven, what I believe about your true Genius. (Both of you Guy’s) I believe that Broadway may be your true calling. Of course, I could never do without all of the other Music you create Duncan.
Don’t ever stop!

Keep up all the good work, Duncan, whether it be in producing, recording a new album, or in theatre/workshops!

I totally see you branching off into Theatre…however, promise us you’ll think twice before you obstain from writing melodies that provoke the tortured romantics in us…. :)
I feel guilty…I was looking at the tour schedule, (I’d forgotten how consuming the tour, the stops and the many cities must be for you!) So many places in so little time…and here I, we, sit begging you for more… forgive us?
:)
July 5th, 2005 at 7:41 pm
I second with metzie, I wish the workshop was open to the public too… then again I live in MA so how can I go see it? :(
Anyway Duncan, that’s great news, and much luck to you. I have a feeling someday you may add “won a Tony” to your list of sins ^_^
Hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth.

Yes, forgive us for begging you for more…BUT, BUT…just had an idea…video blogs while on tour…is that even possible…am such a geek… and no, I cannot be in charge…that sounds too technical now that am thinking about it…surely, can enlist some terrific geek’s help somewhere… :-)
Cheers,

Do you see the actual theatre performance before the composition of the score or is it produced before hand and than tailored to fit the acts? Just curious. I would love to do something like that, my friend is in film and wants me to write music for his projects, I just think it would be so much fun. For some reason the songs I’ve written for other people as “assignments” seem to turn out better than the one’s I do on my own. Interesting…… Peace :)

I’m feeling guilty with Kandi because I keep checking the tour schedule for NYC or Columbus OH dates. But I’m already going to the Indianapolis show and possibly Nashville! The list is definitely getting looooonger.
Memo to Duncan and Crew: Take your vitamins.

Duncan, this is completely off the topic at hand here, but I have a HUGE favor to ask of you. At your August 6th show in Chicago I was wondering if you could make “Home’ a part of your set list. I know it’s a lot to ask, but it’s the first time my wife and I get to see you live, and it’s ‘our song’ (I guess it’s a lot of couples’ songs too) and I thought it would be great if you could play it. If not, that’s cool. I understand and all. Afterall, it’s your show, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask. Thanks Duncan for being so cool with your fans. Can’t wait to see you in Chicago.
P.S. You still rock.

Hey Duncan. Hope all is going well.
Good luck on your workshop.
Ha. I act like I know you.
Anyway, Have a good day.

Yah! So excited for the San Fran date!!!!!!!! I’ll be there with bells on!
You know, just out of curosity, will there be a community message board for the fans to communicate amongst each other? It’d be fun to get a group of us San Francisans together before the show, & I hate to muck up Duncan’s communication board…

For conversation unrelated to Duncan’s blog posts, you should head over to SheikFreik, where the indispensable Joe Novak maintains the dopest fan site on all the internets.

Hey, this is not in re to this post but I went to the Tempe, AZ link to buy tickets and it says 311 is playing at that theatre on 9/14.. any ideas?

kate_s13:
311 is playing the Albuquerque Convention Center. Duncan’s playing the Marquee, but tickets haven’t gone on sale yet, which is probably why the show doesn’t show up on their calendar. We’re looking into it, though. Nice catch.
Incidentally, the Albuquerque Convention Center and the Marquee Theater are about 500 miles apart and are in different states, which is good because there’s no way Arizona alone can handle the sheer force of both bands on the same night. The After Party for both shows goes off at the Waffle House near mile marker 289 on I-40. Ask for Betty. She hook you up with a Waffle and Ham.
July 7th, 2005 at 5:05 pm
Waffle House… what happened to the Denny’s or Big Boys’?
and what about that other b-side you mentioned?
are there any more recorded “nightingale” songs too?
almost as cool as waffles and ham… not quite but almost.

…the dopest fan site on all the internets…
What are you smokin’ we happen to be a LOVELY family of Sheik Freiks on the site! I take offense at the word “dopest” fansite…may we from now on…refer to the fansite members as AFICIONADOS of DS’s work(music, theatre, or whatever else Duncan takes an interest in), heh! Redeem yourself now…before I change my mind… *winks*
Crazy Cheers,

All right, thanks Peter. I’m a member over there as well. I’ll do that from now on.

Leveriza,
“dopest” is a compliment in Peter-speak :)
thanks for the plug, Peter :)
see you guys over on sheikfreik!

Ahh, yes…my apologies Peter..had to enlist the help of the urban dictionary to relate to that lingo…which says dope means cool, nice, awesome…used in a sentence(from the earlier mentioned dictionary)…”Yo foo that new stereo system is dope!” OMG, I need to start rapping with Adrien Brody…(lol)

hi,
don’t want to be pushy, but i keep learning about new DS shows (L.A., San Fran, etc.) from sources outside of this site. could the “places I’m playing” list be updated, please. that would be, uh, ‘dope.’
thanks.
July 8th, 2005 at 7:26 pm
Hey, hope everyone is well out there.
I was just wondering if the shows in Los Angeles and San Juan Capistrano are including the band?
Much thanks,
Roxanne
July 9th, 2005 at 12:43 pm
i dunno if it had anything to do with my request, but i see “places i’m playing” shows more dates. . . gracias.
July 9th, 2005 at 1:05 pm
Peter,
Have you actually been to the waffle house in Phoenix?? Scary place. I would be concerned for your and Duncan’s health. Drop by the house.. I will feed you boys some yummy italian food! ;) Although.. and after party with you guys would certainly make me think about braving the terrors of the waffle house… hmmmm. And thanks for the Betty tip but no ham though.. I am a little veggie girl. =)

It was the nicest Fourth, ever.
I was in Kilkenny, and a very mumbley Irishman tried to buy my flip-flops for 20 Euro. I said no, but gave him Target’s web address. This pleased him. Then the fianc? and I went to the castle and took kissy photos.
Later on, I drank my Volvic water on our bed, while flipping through some cheeky British tabloids (oh those wacky Beckhams!), and watching the European evening news. How mod.
How was Duncan’s holiday? Does Duncan care about July 4th?
Hmmm. Feel free to chime in any time Mr. Sheik.
Good to hear you’re working with Steven again.
I love the things you make together.
To bad there won’t be any exhibition. (if this changes, let us know!)
Toodles for now,
Susann
