Iron Horse

I’m actually very sad that there are no more shows booked for the next month or so. It was great to see eveyone who came out to the show last night. But I’ve got to get a few more things sorted out with respect to the record release, and there’s just not enough time. Anyway … does anyone have any new CD recommendations? (I’m driving back to the city with Doug and we need something to listen to for the drive.) Let me know.

I saw you last night, I got to sit in the front row. I can’t express how much fun it was seeing you live. I’ll go back to the Iron Horse in October when you play there again. As for bands, I’d reccomend Beulah and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. They’re both a little strange, but I love them. Hope the drive is a good one.

  2. Fender9879 Says:

I’d recommend Josh Rouse’s albums “1972″ and “Nashville.” And while I haven’t heard the whole thing myself I’ve heard good things about “Heart Like A River” by Ida. Or of course there’s always an old standby like “The Queen Is Dead” by The Smiths. That one never gets old.

  3. Tansy Says:

Fun, fun on the road. I don?t mind a long ride?g unless the air?s warm and cows are surrounding the highway. :stink abound! ick!: (FYI: I?m sure you already know this, but if not: Iowa is quite possibly the most fertilized in the union. Circulated air will become your best friend.)

    Anyway, to the noise:
If you?re looking for a thoughtful, soft kinda ride, I?d suggest Regina Spektor. It?s just girl with piano, and a fantastic style. There are moments when I hear Bjork in her throat. Each song is its own, and completely unexpected. Highlights for sure, Poor Little Rich Boy, Chemo Limo and Your Honor.

If that?s not your boat, maybe a little Mates of State would make you happy. A cheerful, harmonious piano and drum duo that will demand the tapping of your feet. Utterly infectious. Find Team Boo, and I think you?ll thank me.

If you?re looking for something lippy and mod, I?d suggestNellie McKay (pronounced Ma-kie). She too is piano based, but her sound reminds me of Doris Day, with a Suzanne Vega voice. It?s rhythmatic, songs ranging from tight worded rapping, to strings teamed with words dealing in relationship control. She?s a satirist, but with a style that?s completely refreshing.

On my drives to and from Kansas, these?ve kept me going.
Good luck in your driving, and keep safe.
    Susann

  4. ALackofColor84 Says:

This album’s a little bit older, but if you haven’t you should give Death Cab for Cutie’s “Transatlanticism” a try. They’re new album is coming out later this year. ‘Trans’ is a beautiful album. Just give these four songs a listen and I’m sure you’ll like them: ‘Tiny Vessels’, ‘Transatlanticism’, ‘We Looked Like Giants’ and ‘A Lack of Color.’ Another great album is “Strange and Beautiful” by Aqualung. An amazingly talented young musician. But of course with the crappy taste of most American’s, he probably won’t become very popular like he deserves. I also reccomend Brian Vander Ark’s “Resurrection.” He can tell stories very well.

    Josh

P.S. I know this doesn’t come out till Tuesday (thanks internet), but the new Foo Fighters double-disc “In Your Honor” is amazing as well. The acoustic album has a very 70’s feel to it. Great songs from Grohl and Co.

  5. badmagick Says:

Great show, your sing as well live as when your recorded.

As for music, anything by Zappa seems to amuse and make long drives go by pretty quickly.

  6. Angelina Says:

I know that I have mentioned this artist before in a previous posting, but I love this new artist Susie Suh. She has a amazing voice and is a thoughtful songwriter.

    Angelina

P.S. Any plans to visit the Northwest soon?

  7. Schnappy Says:

The Doves new album, “Some Cities” is fantastic and Gomez’s “Bring It On” is good driving music…

When are you gonna play in the NYC? (… when I’m not out of town…)

  8. the_optimist Says:

I recommend the new Turin Brakes- JackInABox… ah the sweet sounds of summer.

Oooh.. road tripping. Have fun and be careful out there!

Here are new cds in current rotation at my house:
    Kaiser Chiefs -Employment
    Snow Patrol - Final Straw
Athlete - Tourist (REALLY good if you can find it)
Nothing Rhymes With Orange - Polite Gothic (terrible album name, good album)
    Dishwalla - Dishwalla

  11. sry110 Says:

Get a copy of “They Way Up” by the Pat Metheny Group, those guys rip.

Ben Folds’ new CD is really growing on me, maybe that’s worth a listen as well.

    safe journies!

  12. MusikMan169 Says:

I have just been introduced to two new artists, Citizen Cope and Marc Broussard. Marc broussard is a great cross between blues and rock. I love it! Just thought i would make my first post in here and give my two cents to the great one! Keep up with the music your Sheikness and have a great road trip!

  13. Topaz Says:

I’ve been to so many shows this month that I’m sure I’ll be going through some sort of Duncan/Doug withdrawal. :D I’m very happy to have the Long Island show to look forward to though. Especially since it’ll be the full band this time. Ah the evolution I am witnessing…So fun.

Soooo, good luck sorting things out…I’m sure it’ll be amazing from what I’ve heard so far. Remember to be good to yourself while you’re hard at work…you know, eat well, sleep well, drink well(and I don’t mean pinot grigio :D)…

As far as traveling tunes, last night Carl and I listened to some Wilco “A Ghost Is Born” on the way home from the show. I love this album! Especially while driving. I can’t remember what we listened to on the way there…that’s odd… Anyway, it sounded great….all except for track 11…MUST skip over that one…It bores into my skull…But check out this album if you haven’t.

    Good night all! :)

    Laura

  14. Mercgurl Says:

Your show last night was awesome! I was also in the front row, with my friend Jane (we were sitting in the seats closest to Gerry). I don’t know if you remember, but I was the one who told you what time it was when you asked, and even challelnged you to some wrestling toward the end of the encore. :) I’m holding you to that when you come back in October…

    Hee hee, just kidding ^_^

As for traveling tunes, my fiance and I listen to a wide variety. Recently we’ve been listening to William Shatner’s Has Been album (the one Ben Folds produced), some Alkaline Trio, Voltaire (the Boo Hoo album is my favorite), and Maroon 5. Today we added Jim Boggia to the list (I got his new CD at the show last night as well).

I’m so glad I finally got to see you live (I’ve had many opportunities when I lived in San Francisco, and all were missed). It was so worth driving to Northampton all the way from Cambridge. Hearing your wonderful voice was the best wedding present I’ve gotten (I’m getting married June 24th). Really looking forward to your “White Limousine” release.

See you in October (and hopefully next time you won’t have the music stand- Jane and I were frustrated trying to get a peek at you with that thing in the way). Oh, and you and Doug have fun on the road!

    Catherine

p.s. thanks for the autographed stuff I got from you back in February… that totally made my day.

  15. salome Says:

Being sad as you have been today, I would listen to something new, grooving, and comforting. Were I sitting next to you, I’d pass you ‘Suzuki In Dub’ by Tosca. One of my all time favorites.

may your autumn skip winter and instead become spring.

    salome

  16. russelld Says:

    Three words: Better Than Ezra.

And, Duncan, I see that the date in Larchmont isn’t on your site anymore. Am I really not going to get to see you? The show in Long Island is about an hour away from me, as is the one in NJ. My friends and I were so excited. Please say you’re working on coming around here after all!

    - Russell

  17. Roxanne Says:

Ah yes, road trip music. Today was officially my “CD splurge” day! I bought these:

Summer in Abaddon~ Pinback (Just saw them last night in Hollywood, geez they were pretty amazing! Please see them if you ever get the chance).
    Sky Signal~ Audible
Crooked Ceilings~ The Roots of Orchis (instrumental)
West of Lincoln~ Blued Eyed Son
One Plus One is One~ Badly Drawn Boy

I’ve enjoyed all of them with the exception of Badly Drawn Boy. Not instant gratification but I’m sure eventually, a couple times around, I’ll become attached to it. His music is like that for me. I’m curious to know what you or anyone else thinks of Pinback? The Roots of Orchis are always a nice, mellow listen. Audible and Blued Eyed Son I found out about by chance while researching online. I think you might enjoy them, especially Audible.

Pleasant dreams everyone and Duncan & Doug- safe travels and I’ll be seeing y’all in Chicago.

    Peace and Much Love,

    Roxanne

  18. startagain Says:

the new glen phillips winter pays for summer is excellent. the production is a little glossy, but the songs are pretty solid.

also a group called hammock have a cd out called kenotic. it’s all ethereal instrumental stuff that’s reminiscient of sigur ros, ric hordinski, or mogwai.

  19. kandi Says:

I recently bought Aqualung, Strange and Beautiful…it’s both poetic and thoughtful. Maybe more suited for evening enjoyment however…depends upon your mood I suppose when you’re in the car. :)
I’m still on my high from my Alanis Morissette/Jason Mraz concert, and at the moment, Mraz Acoustic Live is in heavy rotation whilst the wind whips about my hair….
    drive safe!

    kandi

  20. CaitlinMoJo Says:

Ryan Adams - “Cold Roses” (I absoutely CANNOT STOP listening to this album. So gorgeous! And just think, he has two more releases coming out this year! Hooray!!)
Hem/Autumn Defense - “Birds, Beasts, & Flowers” EP
    John Vanderslice - “Cellar Door”
Cinematic Orchestra - “Man with a Movie Camera”
    Lhasa - “The Living Road”
Turin Brakes - “JackInaBox” (Amazing with the volume way up)
Even Johansen - “Quiet & Still”
Album Leaf - “In a Safe Place”
    Doves - “Some Cities”
Any album by the Super Furry Animals

  21. bennyben Says:

You’re probably already home by the time I post this so you won’t have time to listen to any of my recommendations for your drive, but a few of my driving favorites are:

Kings of Convenience - Riot on an Empty Street

Neil Finn - Try Whistling This

    Coldplay - X and Y

    Erlend Oye - DJ Kicks

Eric Clapton - Me and Mr. Johnson

And of course, you’re stuff is always on hand in my CD visor thingy which I always play for my friends when on long drives.

  22. benjsutt Says:

    Hey,

there’s a band from over here in the UK called

    NIZLOPI

and they are simply wonderful. they have an independently released album called ‘Half of these songs are about you’ and they’ve just released a track called JCB Song (www.jcbsong.co.uk) which has the best video i’ve ever seen for a single. For me, one of the best features about them (they’re just two guys, an acoustic guitarist/vocals and double bassist/beat boxer) is that Luke the singer sings with his own accent, which is a relative rarity in anything this funky/chilled/acoustic hip-hop/folk over here.

and their live shows are simply awesome. when i last caught them they did half the gig totally acoustic literally ‘in’ the audience, and half on stage. they’re well worth a look. even if you don’t need anything to drive to anymore!

    ben.

  23. EtCeteraSam Says:

    Hey Duncan & Dougie,

So I acted rather relaxed when meeting you pre-show and asking if you’d be around afterwards… and then when I asked you if you wrestled against Fessenden back in the day. But let’s be honest, Humming was an earth-shattering album for me… and Friday night rocked my world. Your shit (like Kaki’s) is BANANAS too.

Hm… music for you and Dougie Wuggie (spelling?)… well, I assume you’re no longer driving. In NYC, there’s a band called QUINTUS that STUNS me everytime I see them. I suppose their CD is available online, but since you’re a new yorker, I’d recommend checking them out live. They’re playing at Pianos on 6/30 and Bowery Poetry Club on 7/9. Website: www.quintusmusic.com

    I may be a manager. But I don’t manage them. I promise… ’tis a very sincere recommendation.

See you in NJ or Long Island, or who knows when.

    SamG.

p.s. hope you enjoyed Deidre’s CD.

  24. Cici Says:

Aqualung’s Strange and Beautiful sounds very good on the road and anywhere else I’ve listened to it. The Life Aquatic’s soundtrack is an all-round cool cd too, especially the Bowie-Brazilian songs. I’ve been listening to Coldplay b-sides lately.. and Alphabetical is in my car a lot - thanks for mentioning Phoenix on here. peace.

  25. vismajor Says:

I’m sure you’ve gotten enough recommendations for ten road trips, but I’ll throw mine into the mix anyway. Give As Seen on TV a try. It’s a mix of full-length songs used in television commercials that features music from Dusty Springfield, Iggy Pop, Fatboy Slim, the Buzzcocks & the Dandy Warhols. I find it to be a great road trip disc.

  26. amberwaves Says:

Well, I will add my 2 cents on some of the suggestions above.

Wilco - A Ghost is Born. Excellent as always by Tweedy and company

Better Than Ezra - Not their best work, but still enjoyable. I’m an Ezralite as well, so I feel bad putting that on a public forum. For excellent BTE driving music, I would go back to How Does Your Garden Grow or check out their B-sides release Artifakt - fantastic!!

Gomez - Always a good choice

    May I also suggest:
Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic. This is a truly great album. I love it!
New Shivaree - you have to fall in love with the sultry voice of Ambrosia Parsley.
Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama - it makes you feel like you need to go outside and drink lemonade (or whisky) on a warm summer day. Ahhh.

Apparently I need to go pick up Aqualung…Thanks for the tips everybody.
    Amber

  27. denniscoyle Says:

Well, this is probably a little late for a recommendation of something to listen to on the way home but, Ray LaMontagne has an absolutely amazing album called “Trouble.”
He came recommended to me by another artist whose music I have to recommend, Christopher Jak. Jak has just come out with his second album “The New Nostalgia” which has been in my cd changer since I got it.
Both of these guys have amazing voices, interesting lyrics, and some really lush instrumentation.
Duncan, I was lucky enough to be in the audience at your Point show. Thank you so much. I had such an amazing time that night and really enjoyed the opportunity to hear some of the songs for the new album!
    -Dennis

  28. Vanessa Says:

Gotta second MercGirl’s recommendation of William Shatner’s “Has Been.” I had no idea what to expect, and it was the prospect of Bill covering Pulp’s “Common People” that reeled me in. But he penned most of the songs on the album himself (they’re really more like spoken-word pieces, actually) and they are incredibly witty and touching. They made my already high esteem for the guy as an entertainer increase tenfold.

  29. leveriza Says:

Being that my post is rather late…a few cd recommendations from me via Mexico City…listen at your own leisure…

    Death Cab for Cutie (Transatlanticism)
    Wilco(A Ghost Is Born)
    Aqualung(Strange and Beautiful)

Okay, that is all…just a few things I listened to before I left on my vacation. You should be happy to know that I was at a bar(very young and chic vibe…an area called Polanco))…they played On a High and Barely Breathing(dance mix)…certainly got my attention…stayed a bit and had more drinks…the crowd seem to really enjoy your music while it played…DS music in Mexico…very, very nice :-)

DS, I hope the record is progressing superbly well. Take very good care.

    Cheers,
Leveriza or “LOLA”(my new name in Mexico, heh!)

    P.S.
    Having a great time but… :-)

  30. SarahLee Says:

    dude! I got two words. . .
DAVID BOWIE. yesssss. Do it. Man, he rocks. I think he and you are like my two favs. Have you SEEN Labyrinth?!! He was wearing some tight pants!
OMG, that movie changed my life. . .no seriously: I’m a gremlin. Man, he’s so great. Do you like him? Have you ever considered acting?
Did you have a cameo in that Britney Murphy movie. . .I’m thinking yes. You were really good. You should do more of that.
So, in conclusion, David Bowie is awesome and you should act.
    cheers!
PS. Sorry to get back to your original request, cd recs, hmmm. . .BOWIE. “Changes” on repeat. I also have found that Ace of Base was severely underrated. You should take a look at that. Those Scandinavians know their music!
    ok peace, love and understanding

  32. lukestanleystp Says:

OURS!!!!!! Try out the album “Distorted Lullabies”…and then try “Precious” The singer Jimmy Gnecco has the voice of an angel.

  33. thebutangjedi Says:

    Ok Duncan,

I have a cd for you to try out :) … I just got this last week and for some reason it has hooked me hard! Try the self-titled cd Zoot Woman (available from iTunes). I’d be interested to hear your opinion… cause I can’t get these damn grooves out of my head.

    Sincerely,

    tbj

PS (off the record, the new foo fighters is amazing :) (especially the acoustic cd)

  34. blackwuzzy Says:

I’ll be seeing Lizz Wright this Saturday night. She should be doing her new stuff. I have been wanting to see her for years now. She is really an excellent Singer. Catch her if you can Duncan!!!

Goodnight D. Stay cool. This weather is just too Hot and my air conditioner has been broken. I feel like I’m going to faint. Stay cool & take care.

    Thanks again, M :)

  35. russelld Says:

I feel weird hijacking Duncan’s blog to talk about BTE, but this is in response to Amber -

You don’t like Before the Robots that much? I’m enjoying it quite a lot. Maybe because I read somewhere that KG said he felt like it was their best work so far. Artifakt is good and all, and I absolutely LOVE “Tremble,” but I’m not sure I’d call it great driving music. How Does Your Garden Grow? is, of course (”At the Stars” is a beautiful and one of my favorite songs, BTE or otherwise), but I think my favorite is Friction, Baby. I just cannot get enough of that CD. Since I’m writing all this, I may as well ask what you think of Deluxe. I love “Good,” as cliche as that may be, it’s catchy as hell and I think it’s a real nice song. I haven’t been able to get into the rest of the CD (outside of “Rosealia,” of course), but I’ve only picked it up recently and have really just given the ENTIRE thing one listen.

And I wasn’t aware that Ben Harper had a new CD and a new band. He’s awesome, I saw him open up for Dave Matthews Band years ago. There’s also a really awesome cover of “High Tide or Low Tide” he did with Jack Johnson.

    - Russell

  36. kandi Says:

I somehow missed, earlier, in your post, that you were sad….so I was thinking…..if the sadness at any point tries to overtake you…you just pop on over to Rochester with your geetar! :) I’d be happy to accomodate you with my exceptionally, superb listening skills….

    lol

  37. Matthias Says:

    Listening suggestions:

“Don’t know much about History- From the Discovery of America to 2001: Kenneth Davis”

18 CDs Make sure you get the 2nd edition which is updated to include Clinton and 911 commentary. It is a fascinating book and unlike some audio books the reader does an incredible job drawing the listener in and making the stories very exciting. The bits and pieces I learned in school as a child now had context and new insights.

“Undaunted Courage - The Lewis and Clark expedition” by Steven Ambrose

Another 18 CDs (I have a long drive to work.) Extremely well-written. Captain Lewis was an extraordinary man and accomplished great things in his early 30s. A great story about the adventurous Co-captains and the perils they met along the way. The most interesting aspect to me was that Lewis was Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State and while living with TJ and under his tutelage became the perfect and only choice for the exploration of TJ’s Louisana Purchase.

As for music CDs to listen to:
How about Trashcan Sinatras - Weightlifting for a pensive mood and The Devlins - Waves for a summer mood. David Gray - Lost Songs on a rainy day. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome… for a high speed travel.

  38. Tansy Says:

    Two more words:
    Dresden Dolls.

    Amazing.

Hope you’ve cheered up a little.

  39. Karla Says:

check out Bill Carson and His Checkered Past’s album The Copper Look. He’s amazing musician from Charleston, SC. His website is www.billcarson.biz
Speakinof South Carolina, you should play there soon. I’ll give you a dollar.

  43. EtCeteraSam Says:

amber… yes… HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW is a GREAT album!

Funny story about that…. I remember going to my college newspaper for the first time for a Music writers meeting… we went around the room saying our favorite CDs. Mind you, these NYU cats were spouting Brooklyn indie bands all over the place. Rather pretentious I thought. Then I said “Better Than Ezra - How Does Your Garden Grow” and they all gave me this look… like I was SO POP for saying a band that had a radio hit.

    Boo Hiss… BTE kicks booty.

  44. EtCeteraSam Says:

oh lord, didn’t follow the whole convo. I’ll hush.

p.s. Lizz Wright + Craig Street = Hopefully some “genius”.

  46. bennymatt Says:

hey duncan. you’ve probably been and gone on that ride by now, but for future reference- a very impressive, quirky swedish band played in my English town of Carlisle last night and blew the socks off everyone there. Very fresh, exciting sound to their music. ’springfactory’ is the name: If you can get hold of their EP its well worth a listen (check out their website www.springfactory.se)- its certainly great driving music.

  50. Emu Says:

Hanson’s latest album “Underneath” is pretty good. The Sneaker Pimps are really good (I prefer their second album “Splinter”). What else….there’s Tori Amos, silverchair (mostly the last two albums), The Dissociatives. There are so many great bands out, it’s hard to pinpoint just a couple. :)

  51. Topaz Says:

I have another suggestion for you… Great stuff for driving and head-bobbing: CAKE “Fashion Nugget” or “Comfort Eagle”. Both are very good. I don’t know if you’re a CAKE fan….I’m thinking no….but they’re actually pretty great. I think a lot of people don’t give them a listen because they just assume they’re empty and silly, which they are pretty silly at times, but it’s definitely not empty or ineffective music…there’s nothing worse to me than empty, ineffective music. Honestly though, there’s something there…Nothing earth-shatteringly enlightening or anything….just F-U-N! And good. And effective. Give it a try! You’ll HAVE to move some part of your body. :D

Ooh, just a little warning….It could make you drive VERY fast…It does me… Be careful.

    Laura

  52. sofjed Says:

without hesitation : Josh Rouse !! (like Render9879’s choise)

some belgian singer/songwriters really worth listening too :
    Novastar
    Sioen
    Zornik
    Ozark Henry
    Jasper Steverlinck
    Arid
    Zitta Swoon
    PJDS
    Admiral Freebee

enjoy and have a safe trip

  53. csword Says:

I really like the new Better than Ezra cd. I think they finally hit what they have been close to doing for a while. Ryan Adams new cd is good if you like his really old stuff. Also, there is a neat band online at Amazon called Say Hi To Your Mom. Finally, check out the band Sustaining Simple at sustainingsimple.com.

    Charlie

  54. JSBarron Says:

I wish you were down here in LA, I’ve been wanting to see you play live again. Anyway, I suggest the album “Francis the Mute” by The Mars Volta. I’ts a great album!

  55. Emu Says:

I also forgot to mention Admiral Twin. They’re an indie band in Tulsa and are absolutely amazing (if you’re ever in Tulsa, they’re constantly doing shows, you should definitely check them out!). http://www.admiraltwin.com/

  56. arie Says:

i’ve been listening to alot of stuff by “Bright Eyes”. this guy is really talented, and he’s been deemed one of the greatest songwriters of his time, i think you’d like him. one of my faves is “Bowl of Oranges”. he’s got a coupla new albums out right now… “Digital Ash in a Digital Urn” and “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning”

also “The Postal Service” has become one of my personal favorites recently. “Such Great Heights” is a catchy song to say the least. anywho, have a fun trip!

  58. MLW Says:

I have to say i really like this band Maktub from Seattle….they are kind of funk soul and rock as well. I have two of their albums “Say What You Mean” and “Khronos”. Also i really like Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers….great guys and a really good album

  59. Fragglerocker Says:

Even though they are not together anymore, the band AWEK was really good. Try to find their EP.
Also, Miracle of 86 - Every famous last word
and Sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan is real interesting

  60. mike_relay Says:

I really like the last Jim White album “Drill a hole in the substrate..” ( the title keeps on going for a while, sorta like Fiona Apple’s record). And speaking of Fiona Apple her unreleased album is great too if you can find a site that Sony hasn’t gotten around to suing yet.

  61. JacquelineRae Says:

An album I have not been able to stop listening to is “Around the Years with: Joe, Marc’s Brother” and Joe Pisapia’s “Daydreams”. Joe is the guy that is the newest member of Guster, if that gives you any ideas.

Hey DS! You should check out a band called “girlie man” on Daemon Records (that’s Amy Ray’s label) and Glen Phillips (lost highway) who used to be in Toad the Wet Sprocket. Very good stuff and of course you can never miss with the new Nickel Creek coming out this fall. I love those guys (and you’re stuff too)! can’t wait to see you in Nashville. Where are you playing??

    HI Duncan,

Have you heard David Mead yet? His latest CD “Indiana” is good.
He’s what I have termed “Duncan Lite”.
I hope you check him out-

I suggest anything by Yann Tiersen (the composer who did the music for the film ‘Am?lie’). ‘Tout est calme’ and ‘La valse des monstres’ are my current favorites.

I wanted everyone to know that I am completely new to the idea of Duncan. I work at a grocery store and I hear “Barely Breathing” all of the time. I absolutely love that song and I have been meaning to figure who sings it because no one at work knows (they don’t like that kind of music). So I went online and looked up the title and here I am! I could not believe that someone so attractive sang that song and that he is so well known still by all of you here. I think it’s terrific and wish, now, that my town could play more of his music because I think that he is wonderful.

Jennifer Drahos, definately a fan now.
