Covers
Hi There,
So, as some of you know, the “Covers Album #1″ is up in the M.O. section. I know a lot of these songs are not so new, but I want to make sure they are available for people who don’t have them. And these may be better quality downloads then some of the earlier versions. I’m pretty sure this version of Court and Spark is extremely rare and I Am A Pilgrim is brand new. It is on the soundtrack of an indie movie called Transamerica that was in the Berlin Film Festival this year. Let me know what you think …

Very surprising and cool Court and Spark. Nice job! :)
I bought to Tribute to Fleetwood Mac a few years back souly for your version of Songbird, it is nice to listen back on it now, still one of my all time fav covers. I popped in Brian Wilson’s Smile to compare yours with his (for kicks). Both are exactly 4:08, nice keeping with tempo! hehe… I actually heard your version before I heard the Beach Boys version. Thanks for turning me on to a great song! All in all, you are very cool with your selection of covers. Thanks again for the music!

I didn’t mention I was talking about Surf’s Up when I was talking about Brian Wilson’s Smile, but that’s a given. Anyway - ok

It is 5:15 and I can’t sleep…so I figured, what could be better at this hour than sitting here in my quiet kitchen at my computer drinking my coffee and listening to some Duncan covers? Not a lot… So, that’s what I”m doing. Right now I’m listening to “I am a Pilgrim”. It’s very beautiful! *sigh* And I’m liking the “Court and Spark” studio version VERY much. I have to say though, it took me by surprise the first listen as I had only heard the live acoustic version and this one was so different. I also just want to say that for some reason I’ve always thought that your cover of “Embraceable You” is one of the sexiest things I’ve ever heard. Ever. Wow there’s just something about it. :) Ooh, one more thing, I like your cover of “Songbird” more than the original. It’s SO sweet. :D Sorry Christine…

Just downloads the tracks - looking forward to hearing ‘I am a Pilgrim’ as I heard all the others. Thanks Duncan. By the way I love your version of ‘Blasphemous Rumours” - absolutely spine tingling.

Hi Duncan! I love the covers…I’ve heard them all before except for I Am A Pilgrim and this version of Court & Spark. I listened to both of them this morning while checking my email and drinking my coffee. I absolutely LOVE the studio version of “Court and Spark”!! I think your voice sounds so wonderful and soothing on “I Am A Pilgrim”…I am really liking that one too. I must agree with MMur10k about “Blasphemous Rumours”!! Oh, and “Reel Around The Fountain” is probably one of my favourite covers that you sing — SO beautiful! :) Hope you have a great day Duncan…listening to your songs this morning put me in great mood. :)
This M.O section is the greatest thing since sliced bread, hehe!

p.s. One more covers comment to add…
I think your voice is absolute perfection on “Surf’s Up”.

It makes me frisky.

this version of court and spark is a lot better then the last version i’ve heard. is that an e-bow in the begining? those things are so much fun to play with a little delay and a slide.

I love the M.O. section…kinda feels like some secret society sometimes…
Again, a beautiful cover of “Reel Around The Fountain” ssssh, I much prefer your version as opposed to the original…can’t stop listening to it…! Yes, “Embraceable You” is super sexy(stop blushing Duncan-ha-ha).
Am now listening to “Surf’s Up”…perfect cover version to accompany a lovely/sunny/spring day in San Francisco…margarita cheers to all! :-)

I love “I Am A Pilgrim”, what a beautiful song Duncan, it’s has lot of emotion, I can’t stop listening…

well, I’ve listened to “Pilgrim” about 8 times now….
I didn’t know why, at first, I was forcing back tears after the 2nd verse, but then it solidly hit me after the last chorus….
It reminds me of my Godmother Zola, and her favorite church hymn. She was a member of this pretty, little, picture/postcard perfect church, poetically hailed “Sweet Home”. Every chance I had, I’d go with her to the Sunday morning worship. This particular hymn was always sung at the close of every funeral, (sadly I attended my fair share there also) and many times it was sung as dismissal of service. We would join hands, and Zola would always smile, close her eyes and quietly sing. The mood in the church always seemed to shift into quiet remembrance during those very moments…..As I matured, I came to recognize the overwhelming sense of peaceful presence the song brought.
“I am a Pilgrim” conveys that spirit. I wish I could share it with Zola. She passed away a year & a half ago. I miss her. I know she’d enjoy it too…

Cool. Thanks again for sharing this. I’ve always loved “Orpheus”. Would love to hear that one live someday. Also really enjoyed “I am Pilgrim” and “Court and Spark”~very nice.
Are you coming to the west side? I know LA is atrocious at times, especially our shallow pools ;-) but I hope you can make it. Will see Pinback this Friday at the Avalon, should be a good show.
Well, hope your week is going well and you’re living every moment!
Peace and Much Love,
Roxanne

As I said before, the best $20 I ever spent. I heard most of these before but I think it’s great you offer them for others to hear. My personal favorite is “Orpheus”. “I Am a Pilgrim” is great.
I know it may be too much to ask, but you also had a cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”. Anyway that you can also put that on here? And maybe “Wonderwall” by Oasis? hehe
May 25th, 2005 at 11:34 pm
ooh, I second “wonderwall” !!! I’d love to hear that!
just wanted to add … “court and spark” is awesome!

“Court and Spark” IS awesome. I’m loving it more and more each listen, and I can’t stop listening. It’s just so nicely Duncan-ized. It makes me want to throw my hands up in the air. You know that feeling you get? Last night I was cooking dinner listening to all the covers but I kept coming back to “Court and Spark”… and throwing my hands up in the air. :)

We were going to throw Redemption Song up there, but, to be honest, we don’t have a studio quality version of it. The one copy I have was encoded at around 96 kbps, and there’s all sorts of digital noise all over it. No one was more disappointed than I, believe me.
Ditto Wonderwall. Duncan’s played it live a bunch of times, but none of the recordings I’ve heard have been up to snuff. Plus, he wanted this upload to encompass just the proper studio covers.
Hopefully at one of the upcoming shows we’ll get a good recording of it. Will keep you guys posted.

Hey! I liked the version of wonderwall where Duncan forgot all the words at Cornell ;) you could at least post that one for us as a joke - perfection isn’t everything!
just a thought ^_^

missbunburyist: I don’t know what you’re talking about. Duncan NEVER forgets words. Heh.

I’ve never heard the wonderwall cover—-love the song though, I bet it’s awesome! Is it slowed down or altered any or is it straight up acoustic and vocal? Any body know? Peace—as duncan always signs his autographs!

Duncan -
I have to say that was the best 20 bucks I have ever spent on anything in my life. I am sorry it has taken me sooooo long to get the free downloads. If I wasn’t a huge fan already I would be now. So far I have only gotten to the Live at Cornell but I must say great stuff. I have them on my ipod and will be played often. I am looking for a date that I can come see you. Living in Buffalo NY makes that hard. LOL. Anyway, I can’t wait for the album and as always you are an amazing songwriter/singer keep up the great music.

Wow, the Court and Spark d/l is awesome! You did Joni proud.
Not to mention that i have always and will always think Orpheus is an amazing song.
Thanks for the extra stuff!

my two cents -
“I am a Pilgrim” broke me.

~me again…
“…Reel around the fountain…Fifteen minutes with you Oh, I wouldn’t say no…”
this song has been on constant play since its download…if my ipod could talk, it will say something like…” she’s gone Cuckoo for DS music…” not cocoa puffs(double ick) he-he…
Cheerio,

Hey Duncan,
I know I’m off subject here, but what else is new? Hey, Happy Holiday
Dear. I am hoping the weather will be sunny and clear this weekend, but that’s gonna be a hard one I think. I’m looking forward to seeing you next week. It’s been awhile, for sure…. well, i figured I would hope on here while drinking my green tea. i was waiting for it to cool. There’s this very pretty song on, I don’t know who the srtist is, but it’s very pretty. Maybe they will say who it is?..Wowwww Robert Plant. I didn’t recognize him. It’s a pretty slow acoustic soft new one…very, very nice…..Some things never grow old….Wow, I got to go down to our great National Capital yesterday to work. Nice to know the Capital looked bright. This will be hopefully a working weekend for me to finally finish up this school, work. I’m still cringing at the thought. I have no choice, but to get the work done now…..put a good word out there for me…..I haven’t joined yet. What’s in this Member’s Section anyway???? (Some Songs?) Any other neat surprises? I may join?? All my Love Darling….go to sleep. M, bw :)
Have a great holiday Duncan!!!!!!

WHOOAH….way to go duncan, you surely hit a home run with those covers. I grew up in a household where my father was a Brian Wilson fanatic so it was awesome to hear someone pay homage to a classic Beach Boys tune..I can’t wait to play it for my dad….you moved me with Surfs Up, you brought back old memories and stirred up new emotions…then again you always do! Keep up the good work, looking forward to the new album…C ya at Stephens Talkhouse.

I would love to hear some of these covers, but this is not the right month for me to pay for the MO….I will soon…eventually and hopefully….

I’ve heard several of the covers before as they were on a fan site I came across once before. I think that Orpheus is my favorite. I love them all but I absolutely love Orpheus. I also love the way you sang Embraceable You. It’s one of my most favorite classic songs and you sing it so well.
