Sorry!

After re-reading my last post, I think it does sound kind of arrogant. I should have posted it within the previous thread because it was actually an answer to some questions in that thread. Please accept my apologies and understand that my next release will be offered up with a most humble spirit.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. People are most likely here because they’re interested in your music and what’s coming up. I took it as more “excited and proud” than arrogant, but hey. There’ll always be a few flamers and trolls online anywhere. Don’t let it get you down. As for a humble spirit, how many orher major reccording artists have a personal blog up to stay in touch with their fanbase? Not too many that I know of. Glad to have you here.

haha. oh you’re too kind. i didn’t see it as arrogant at all. i don’t think most of the people on here care how this new release is offered up anyway. just that it will be. suposedly…. hmmmmm?

  3. aileen Says:

Duncan no need to apologize. You didn’t sound arrogant in any way, just trying to get us all excited about the upcoming cd.

Oh Duncan. How you make me grin.

If you’ve retained the nature that I saw in ‘97 (and I’m assuming you have), I wouldn’t worry. You were so thankful, and kind… I still have the string from your guitar. But maybe it was because I was young, or the only one there who seemed to give a poo about the reasoning behind your work- not the boxers or briefs questions. Who knows?
Regardless you were fantastic. A very humble guy.

If you’re genuinely worried about blogging comments (and I’m assuming you must be), just keep this in mind: sarcasm can be very difficult to read on the web. No ridiculous Janeane Garofalo tones to be heard. And if I’m looking at the comments correctly… I don’t think you should have ANY worries.

    We’re here because of you,
and we want to know what we can ahead of time.
That’s what being a “fan” is all about.

I agree with silvenshadow. Always a pleasure to here from you keep smiling Duncan. ;)

I always love a humble spirit.

  7. Cici Says:

Oh please. That chick (or dude - how can we really know what they are) is such trying to ruffle your feathers. And how can we take anyone that talks up Britney with any ounce of seriousness, really.

Anywho, we that read the “Limo w/ Poe” post (and if we’re on here there’s a 99% guarantee we read it) know where you’re coming from and you don’t need to worry yourself about it.

Though you do seem to enjoy keeping us (me!!) in suspense… bad Duncan, very bad!! :)

  8. lotusblossom Says:

That’s great that you’re so sensitive to the tone in your post, but I think most of us just felt that you were teasing us and hightening our anticipation of the new album, which I think is great! Besides 70% of me wants to be surprised. Thanks for making such an effort to keep in touch with us!

  9. thebutangjedi Says:

    To begin with,

I want to say that I?d buy whatever you release. I thought Daylight? was the most popish? since the self titled album. However, I enjoyed it thoroughly because it was just another transformation for a great artist. I do prefer the darker music, primarily because I?m prone to melancholy moods and I resonate closely with lyrics that reflect these moods. I think the best part of listening to music is being able to glean your own meanings from it.

I do like surprises. I also like when artists are not afraid to push the boundaries of their own music. This goes for any artist! I remember reading an interview with Dave Mathews in which he admitted having to re-record an entire album because the record company found the music dark. I?m not a huge fan of Dave but I would have loved to hear that album.

I don?t know the full details of your own battle with the industry, but if it is anything like this I express my sympathies. There must be a tremendous pressure on an artist to be successful even at the cost of personal integrity, especially when music is the primary source of income.

I think when I posted yesterday I was expressing bitterness towards the music industry in general and an intrepid hope that this next album will fly in the face of the recent trends in pop music. It seems that folk music is the next big cash crop. I look at this progression with mixed emotions. On one hand I think that the struggling singer-song-writer artist deserves every penny they can get from the fleeting moments in the limelight. They deserve recognition for writing exceptional music! However, what price will be paid for the fame? I wonder if Nick Drake would have cared that his music was being used to sell cars? What will happen when folk music is no longer the next big thing?

Is this the ranting of a music snob? Good music is best when it is shared. However, can we be selective with who we share it with? Is it wrong for me to have a look of disdain on my face when I bring up Duncan?s name and all I get is oh, he wrote that I am barely breathing song right? Duncan mentioned Alexi Murdoch in a prior post. I am also waiting anxiously for his upcoming release, not because I listened to a bastardized version of Orange Sky on the O.C, but because I was lucky enough to find him by freak accident browsing iTunes.

This post has grown way to long, but I felt like explaining a few things. I would like to say one more thing.

Write music. I?ll buy it. If you enjoy what you are writing my guess is I will as well. I?m sure this goes for all the fans who actually take time to post on this blog. We are thankful, and excited, about the upcoming release.

No need to apologize for being proud of your music. If you weren?t, we wouldn?t buy it.

  10. Topaz Says:

Hmm…damn those trouble-making Britney fans. Leave it to them to create feelings of unease…I didn’t think any of your comments sounded arrogant. Not at all. I just thought you were being playful and toying with our emotions a bit. :D Which was fun.

Anyway, I can understand the whole coming across the wrong way in writing. I do it all the time.

    Right…

I’m entirely new, so, “hi”. That being said, I was curious, Duncan, if you’re ever coming back to Rochester, NY? If not, will you be playing in Washington, D.C. or the surrounding areas anytime in the near future? I saw you in my hometown of Rochester maybe six years ago and absolutely loved every second of it (it was at Milestone’s in the city, if you remember the event).
Anyway, I digress, but I think that you should come back for another show this summer in Rochester. If that cannot be arranged, please be so kind as to adjust your scheduling to fit in a small show in D.C. beginning in the Fall…haha. No, but seriously, it would be amazing to see you again. Thanks….

    Meg

PS: A good dose of sarcasm is wonderful and never arrogant.

It’s amazing how ones words can sound different, dependeing on who’s ear it falls on. Maybe It depends on the mind that processes it. It is a testament to your character that you would be concerned of how your words were taken, for that I thank you. I don’t think anyone who has felt your music took it the wrong way. However, that is a constant battle for song writers. On a diffrent note: Personally, I would like to hear more songs like River Man. This is my second time writing but I feel like i’m writing a good friend. Thanks for sharing peices of your self with all of us. Keep on Inspiring. peace —>miggy

Man some of those posts are long. I’m just excited to hear the new stuff and want to come jam out acoustically with you in some coffee house in New York and share a latte. Then you could sign my coffee cup sleeve, and my idealistic birthday would be over….:)

Looking forward to the new stuff—-interesting to hear that more keyboards will be utilized—will there be then somewhat less guitar work or just more keyboards? I would assume the latter knowing your work. God speed—good luck recording and may the force be with you.

This is my first time logged into this website. I didn’t know “famous” musicians could spare the time to read stuff by their fans??? J/k. There’s a few things I’d like to say. First off, I’ve been a “real” fan of your music since “Humming” came out. I listened to your first CD, and I liked a couple tunes on it, but what really inspired me was the songwriting on Humming. I have to re-listen to the music (which I’ll do this week) and post up some of the thoughts I have about it. Daylight was a great album as well, something that should’ve done much better on the marketplace than it did. Especially with songs like “On a High” and “On Her Mind”. Nevertheless, I bought the CD and really enjoyed it. You have inspired me as a songwriter to write more profound lyrics, stuff that isn’t necessarily too vague or “over people’s heads”, but meaningful lyrics, ones that have even double meanings! If you have the time, or anyone on this website has a few minutes to spare, check out my upcoming demo and let me know what you think of it. I know what you’re thinking: I shouldn’t be promoting my music on your website, but you know as a musician you have to utilize ANY ways to get your music heard. I would just really appreciate your honest opinion. The website address is: www.angstaroo.com/projects/audio/sineofinfinity The songs to listen to are: “ATOP 032905M.mp3, Again and Again 0327.., Fireside032905M.mp3, and The Sign 032905M.mp3″ I’m just throwing this out there to you because I’m guessing you might have been in a similar situation as myself - in an ivy league institution, trying to make a career out of my grades, yet nevertheless hoping for my music to mean something more than anything. Okay, I fear I’ve said too much and am scaring you, so I’ll leave with this: Thanks for putting good music out there for us to listen to, and regardless of whether you listen to my music, I appreciate the honesty you bring to yours.

Oh man I wish I could go to New York to listen the new stuff….Im from Mexico but I just love your music, and I love the way you get in touch with the people in this great humble way. Im afraid you will never be arrogant. In your music I can feel what a humble beautiful soul you have! Im always painting with your music as a background and inspires me a lot. Thank you for being such a great human being and thank you for your Art!
Hugs from Mexico to all of you!

i dont really see how it could be arrogant. just informin us on what we wanted to hear

  18. leveriza Says:

Please, no apologies needed…echoing most of the members’ sentiments(took it as a playful/teasing post. You are a TERRIFIC human being…kind, honest, sensitive, thoughtful, multi-talented, musically gifted…surely the list goes on…AND to actually take the time to POST frequently to keep us updated…WOW…thank you. LOVE YOUR MUSIC…all the best…

    Cheers,

  19. ILoveChomsky Says:

Wait a minute. So you thought that fans who take the time to post here would actually be interested in your music? How silly and arrogant of you, Duncan. Obviously, a flood of questions does not mean people care. ;)

In all seriousness, the only way your post could have been construed as arrogant was if the reader was going out of his way to make it seem so (you could probably force a square peg in a round hole if you hit it hard enough). That you would take the time to keep us up to date, much less apologize for a faux pas you didn’t commit, speaks volumes. Those of us here who aren’t trolls don’t think you’re arrogant. Au contraire! We’re all amazed by how down to earth you are.

    Peace,
    Maria

  20. JB Says:

    Arrogant?
Duncan, you must get a hold of yourself!

Arrogant is the way “J.Lo” struts around in a dead animal’s fur…the way “P.Diddy” throws parties to which you can only wear white clothing…the way Britney Spears announces she’s pregnant and expects me to give a flip…the way celebrities collect their millions and then complain when people ask for an autograph.

You are not arrogant; you are proud of your work, and you should be sir!

    ~Jen

  21. bman68 Says:

This is my first time to the new site and wanted to say there is no way that being proud and excited about your new project could be seen as arrogant.

  22. kandi Says:

You, Duncan Sheik…..Arrogant ??? nooo… Sorry, the shoe just doesn’t fit. Not to say you aren’t human, or that you are you never err upon disastrous ways simply because you are perfect in our eyes …lol…

Actually, I enjoyed the banter. I assumed you were toying with us in a wee bit of fun. And don’t we deserve it with our over-zealous anticipation for your “upcoming and long awaited” next album…(I say that with a complete smile on my face, btw) :)

    lol…
