White Limousine

So you all want to know what it’s going to sound like do you? Isn’t it better to be surprised?
I will say that I certainly hope you all find it to be dark, sophisticated, and pop-unfriendly. And I will say there is a bit more piano, wurlitzer, and rhodes on this record than on previous releases. If you keep guessing I’ll try to let you know if you’re close or not.

thank you. thats awesome. i’ve always wanted to hear more piano on your records. is there also going to be more programed music on this record too? i’ve always wondered what a combination of something more electronic like ‘the postal service’ and your acoustic stuff on phantom moon would sound like. i’m sure whatever it is, it’ll be amazing. best of luck!

When will you be in the Seattle area? Would love to see you…

Surprises are good, but knowing a little something about new music before it’s even released makes it that much more exciting to hear it for the first time (I think).

Dark, sophisticated, and pop-unfriendly sounds excellent to me.

I’m curious about the percussive elements of the album. Will it be more standard drum kits, or more synthesized stuff, or ethnic percussion, or orchestral percussion, or hardly-any-percussion? Can’t wait to hear it.

Thanks for really being in touch with your fans, Duncan.

  4. JB Says:

    dark?…sophisticated?…pop-unfriendly?

    …THANK YOU.

  5. the_optimist Says:

i bloody LOVE the wurlitzer!!! i’m not kidding either. have you ever heard of ed harcourt? he uses a lot of wurlitzer, esp on his first two albums. ugh i’m really curious…. good curious. :), sybil

  6. Carlos Says:

    GOD! Duncan you’re killing me!!!

dark, sophisticated, pop-unfriendly sound perfect to me!

    Thanks for the update!

Lots of sampling, looping, post processing, plugins, etc
    or more organic?

  8. leveriza Says:

    …Okay…dark, sophisticated, and pop-unfriendly…am UBER-INTRIGUED!

Well Duncan, sure sounds like we are all (ANXIOUSLY) awaiting the new release…THAT IS IF (hopefully) none of us suffers any MYOCARDIAL INFRACTION from EXCITEMENT/SUSPENSE in the interim…Best of luck! :-)

    Cheerio,

I trust your judgment. Just let it flow. By the way, I enjoy the quality of the instrumental work you did for Home at the End of the World. I would vote for an instrumental piece or two on the new release if asked.

    Thanks for the giving.

A part of me wants to be surprised and a part of me wants to know ALL…and reading this thread makes me want to hear it right now as I sit here typing in my kitchen. It’s wayyy too quiet in here. I think I need me some White Limousine. :D I love the album title. I love that David’s singing on it. I love that it’s going to be dark, sophisticated, and pop-unfriendly. I’m ready. I’m there. Let’s go.

since i was talking about going to the Dears free show before. . . they are definitely “dark and atmospheric”, do you use a HARMONIUM, too? they remind me of the Smiths/Morrissey, yes, but without as much pop and hooks. i heard bits of Elbow, too.

So Duncan, is your imagery dark like the Dears (”I don’t have a raincoat”) or dark like Morrissey (”If a double decker bus, crashes into us”) or like Elbow (”I’ll be the corpse in your bathtub. . .useless.”) OR ??

    thanks for your time

Piano! Schweeet! Some of my favorite tunes of yours are your piano tunes (eg: Out Of Order, Reasons For Living). You rock!

  13. wildsea Says:

Sorry to be such a bummer here, but there is already too much darkness in the world. Some of us just want to hear that voice full of peace and love.

Of course I will buy it, I’ll just have to play it on my darker days.

  14. SarahLee Says:

You must think a lot of people care about white limousine, a little arrogant, no?

Now, Britney Spears, she can sing. When’s her next album coming out?

    Toodles!

  15. eeegi Says:

While all of your CDs have a special place in my car (only place I can listen to music loud enough, joy to paper thin walls and building on the cheap) your brief description was exactly what I wanted to hear. Giving little hints definitely raises the anticipation :0)

  16. Tansy Says:

    Yeago piano!

    There’s something about the piano.
Especially when you’re doing your thing Mr. Sheik.
Of the shows I’ve seen, it’s the part where you abandon the guitar and hit up the ivories…
those are the moments that stick in mind.
It?s an immediate cause for sheer quiet, and intimacy. Such a passive demand.
Makes me think of being sucked into an alley-way by a good looking stranger, causing the chase to suddenly lose all excitement, just inches away from each other.
The shaping of all anticipation, into sheer wonder.

Hmm. Feeling some poetic whatnots apparently.
Need to go write in non-blogging terms.
    Keep us updated.

Oh, and I want an answer about your favorite Buckley song.

  17. timmer Says:

I want to know if Gerry (Spooky Ghost) Leonard will be playing on most of the new CD. I was worried when I heard he was playing with Bowie. His playing is totally outstanding with your music. Definitely one of my favorite guitar players.

  18. jarock Says:

Yeah Gerry is some guitar player, see told you the Irish have it. Duncan must have Irish roots too. lol :).
We are all looking forward to any of your new music Duncan except maybe SarahLee who has got to be joking right?.

  19. THL Says:

Hmm, a wurlitzer … one of the most cult-proclaimed keyboard instruments in the history of music.

This album could sound like anything from Ray Charles and Steely Dan to the Doors, Sun Ra and Queen.

Nick Drake at the Flamingo Las Vegas? Probably not even close.

i like surprises! who doesnt? has anyone ever listened to Aqualung??? if you haven’t then you MUST DO SO A.S.A.P.! Aqualung is an amazing (to say the least) UK band that just released an album in the states. Strange and Beautiful is the album, i haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet but i have both of the albums they released in the UK and they are simply brilliant. Definitely a must hear for all music lovers that appreciate the “dark, sophisticated, and pop-unfriendly” side of music because that is exactly what they are. I saw them play live just the other week and it was the best show i had ever been to. Matt Hales (lead singer and pianist) and his brother, Ben (guitar), are the guts of the band and they have truly remarkable backgrounds. Matt wrote his first symphony at the age of 17 and had it performed by a 60-piece orchestra wtih Matt himself conducting. He has a strong classical background and you can hear it in his music. I dont mean to be a pest by plugging another band on duncan’s site, i got a bit carried away i suppose. haha sorry! but everyone should inquire about this artist WHILE listening to their favorite duncan album. :)

When I hear the words “White Limousine”, I think of the scene at the beginning of “Cecil B. Demented” (horrible movie, btw) where Melanie Griffith is all, like, “Do I LOOK like a coke dealer??”

Duncan, dude, you gotta get all pimped out for the cover - like Jude on the the cover of his “King of Yesterday” CD.

  22. blue_psyche Says:

    pop-unfriendly…

now that’s an understatement i’ve been dying to hear from you and all the other artists i personally admire

  23. Matthias Says:

Duncan, did you not like Daylight? Your best effort was quite poppy.

Unless you meant pop-ular then I agree whole-heartedly. Popular music is horrendous and quite frankly has always been with a few notable exceptions.

While your first self-titled album is a personal favorite. Daylight trumps it if only for the sonic production. They are quite different records. The first more introspective and brooding, the fourth is earnest and energizing.

I would love to hear a remaster and better mix on the 1st album. Any chances? Sonically it needs a facelift. I can’t make a proper best of cd for my car with it. The songwriting is incredible. Absence of Sun, Serena, Home, Reasons For Living…

I have the songbook for the 1st one, do you have any others for Humming and Daylight?

How about playing Serena acoustically and putting it in the members area?

I love playing your songs on guitar. You can feel the emotional in the strumming and the chording is great fun.

So to bring the conversation full circle: is the new record more like album #1, album #2, album #3 (Phantom Moon), or album #4? Oh by the way, there is no option e. - all of the above. ;-)

    Best of luck!
